    Thank you for your well informed information. My wife just got past colon cancer including surgery but now we are dealing with acute (every 2 weeks, almost clockwork) flare ups of diverticulitis. Yes we are aware she is full of diverticulum, now we think there is one really bad one and I am researching all available scientific information I can find to address, relieve and heal it. Sadly the doctors don't know a lot about this issue. You did an excellent job of summarizing about ALL the info I have found in the last year of my search. All the best to you.

    This is exactly the info and advice i have had from my doctor. After years of following them I see no change, still regular diverticulitis attacs and antibiotics. After every attack I slowly build up the fibre content and eat mostly paleo, lots of fibre and water. I am 40, not overweight, not smoking and I work out when not sick. Since I, and even more so my workplace, is getting tired of this I now am trying a desperate move - going carnivore on the the lion diet. I am scared because everyone says not to eat red meat but I have to get better. One week in I am still alive.

    • @space_girloz7077
      @space_girloz7077 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      stop eating fibre!!! it is irritating your gut! It is likely the cause of your symptoms! Absolutely try the Carnivore Diet - it may sound crazy, but it works!!! have a look at Dr Ken Berry for starters... Also Kent Carnivore. Good luck :)

      I am age 75 and have had diverticular disease since I was 28. My condition improved when I stopped eating salads and vegetables! I now have them in small amounts. Not every patient is the same. A consultant told me that some need more fibre, others need less and cannot cope with a plant based diet. Many general practitioners are out of date and still preach that more fibre is good for everyone.

    I suffered with diverticular disease for 15 yrs. I ended up with Sepsis 3 times, it’s in my opinion classed as a minor ailment compared to say Chron’s. I ended up needing surgery after being left too long. When they operated they discovered my bowel had sealed over, I cannot describe the severe pain I was in. I ended up requiring a colostomy which was devastating to me at the time. 5 yrs on it was the best thing that happened, I have no pain and am not chancing having the reversal op. Consultants need to understand that it is not something they should dismiss.

But, shortly afterwards I started feeling severe pain and they did not know what caused it. They ran so many tests. Weeks later it got better. But do not want it to come back. The pain has been constant and never leaves. When the doc at the ER told me my diagnosis she just told me to follow up with my primary care doctor. Along with the horrible pain I’ve been experiencing I haven’t pooped in close to a week, and I have barely passed any gas. I have had diverticulosis for about 15 years. Chills, lower back pain, then fever and lower left abdominal pain followed. I started to write a book about diet, but never finished. No everything bagels or 7 grain breads. Any spices and condiments you shake from a bottle should be avoided. Use fresh instead. Chew, chew, chew your food well. Certain veggies and greens will upset your stomach. Anything with seeds I still avoid and disagree with ignoring this by Dr's now. Have Cipro always on hand and go to a liquid diet or soft diet of you think you are having an attack. Exercise gently when you are having a full blown attack. No more Caprice salad. I take the seeds out of my tomatoes and dice them. Diet is real important. Eat slower and chew.

When it happens the pain is so depressing that I can not even sleep as this rock is sitting in the middle of my colon. Thus far, nothing works or they do for a while and then stop working. I had a really bad diverticulitis attack a couple of years ago and was taken to hospital by ambulance. My wife found me on the kitchen floor unconscious seven in the morning. The crash of me passing out alerted her. I probably would not be here if not for her. I spent a week in hospital. The pain was severe but fortunately for me I pulled through. My mom’s sister died from this disease at fifty two.

    Hello Cathy, thank you for the video. I had a very strange experience over the past week and a half, wanted to bring it up to hopefully answer my question as well as any readers that may be wondering. I apologize ahead of time for the length of this comment, but it has been a long week and a half, and a lot has happened.
    I am a 60 year old male, very fit, great diet, exercise regularly and had none of the symptoms you described that could lead me to believe something was going on in my intestines.
    On Friday, July 7th, I had my wife drive me to the ER because of severe pain in my lower right back / hip area. I had never experienced pain like this, and had no idea what it might be because two days earlier I had passed my annual physical with flying colors. I was also examined about three weeks prior to that with an ultrasound of my bladder and kidneys that was perfectly normal. So, I was not thinking kidney or kidney stones.
    After about an hour in the ER waiting room, one of the triage women said she was asking a doctor if he could give me something for the pain. It was obvious how much pain I was in, and everyone at the ER was thinking kidney stones. However, after they ran a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis, it showed all organs, including my kidneys, were fine with no signs of stones.
    The ER doctor then told me the scan showed diverticula on my colon, and the diagnosis was diverticulosis with no evidence of diverticulitis. I had no idea a the time, because I did not know anything about the condition, but after returning home and doing research, I started having my doubts as to why I was still in pain. This was after I was given Norco, a shot of Toradol and a Lidocaine patch, all within a two hour period, which all did absolutely nothing for my pain.
    As you mentioned in this video, when pain is associated with this condition, it is in the lower LEFT abdomen. My pain was in my lower RIGHT BACK. I never had any pain in my abdomen on either side. This should have been a flag for the doctor, but he sent me home in almost as much pain as I came in with. After asking him (because he was not giving ANY advice) what I should do, he told me to "eat more spinach and broccoli", and "don't lift heavy weights".
    I still had pain in my lower right side all last week (July 10th to July 14th). I also had been on a liquid diet, because my wife and I researched what to do with the condition, and as mentioned in this video, to give your system a rest, liquid diets are recommended for a few days. By Wednesday (5 days of no solid food), I had lost 4 pounds, and was not feeling any improvement with my pain. On Thursday I started slowly adding some solid food, because I was feeling worse, and didn't want to keep losing weight.
    On Friday, July 14th, I woke up with more of a sharp pain in my lower back than it had been since the previous weekend. I went to an Urgent Care that has a former ER doctor on staff. After showing him all of the ER paperwork, telling him my symptoms and him examining me, he concluded the pain I had has NOTHING to do with diverticulosis, that it was on the wrong side, and that I had something wrong with my right hip. He recommended seeing an Orthopedic doctor and gave me a referral name.
    Unfortunately, their first appointment wasn't until August, so I planned on calling on Monday to find someone that had an appointment in the coming week. Over the weekend, after speaking with friends of ours, we were referred to a chiropractor that had helped this friend when he had major trouble with his back. I went to my first appointment with the chiropractor this morning (Monday, July 17th), with another two (so far) appointments planned. We have a plan for treatment, and I will be getting an MRI of my hip and surrounding area to find what the actual problem is for the chiropractor to work on.
    Moral of the story, just because a doctor tells you something, do not take their word automatically, especially if you know your body well enough, and you are pretty sure they have given you incorrect information.

    • @LevelUpRN
      @LevelUpRN  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing, and YES doctors don’t always get it right! You definitely have to advocate for yourself and seek alternative opinions sometimes… I am curious what you were able to find out and how you are feeling?

    • @marcd1981
      @marcd1981 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@LevelUpRN Hello again, Cathy. Thank you for replying. Unfortunately, this is Monday, July 31st, and my saga continues with no end in sight.
      I had the MRI done as mentioned in my first comment, and the chiropractor's main concern (from our discussion about the results) was spinal stenosis. He saw no evidence of that, which he was happy about, because he said he could be a little more aggressive with his treatment.
      He also told me the only thing he saw out of the ordinary was some bulging (2% to 3%) of my disks, which he didn't seem to be worried about. And I'm not a doctor, so I don't know if there is an acceptable limit for this. Other than that, he has no idea what the pain in my side is being caused by.
      So, I wake up in the morning with what I can only describe as pressure in my right side (inside where the "love handle" area is), which will get worse as I sit to have breakfast. Within 10 to 15 minutes of sitting, it gets very uncomfortable, and then it will start to hurt, and I have to lay on my back. This is the only thing that relieves the pain, is laying down. As soon as I'm back on my feet, it all starts again.
      I don't think I mentioned this in my first post, that the "love handle" area on my right side has been numb this entire time, as well. More than three weeks now, and it is still numb. It doesn't travel anywhere else, not to my leg, not to my groin, it is just the "love handle" area. I don't know if there is a specific medical term for this part of the body, but I figure "love handle" is well known and gets the point across.
      This is getting very frustrating, as I had mentioned in my first post, I am a very active and fit person. Regularly workout during the week with stair climbing and hiking on weekends. Before this started, I was in the best shape I had been in in probably 15 years. My resting heart rate was actually down to 48 to 50 bpm, my blood pressure was 116 / 66, all blood (CBC) work was excellent, with my doctor telling me after my annual physical that I was "the epitome of health" just two days prior to this pain starting.
      For the last three weeks, I have not done my workouts, stairs or hiking, as I have no idea what I can, or can't do. The doctors cannot tell me what this is, and if I try to do my normal exercise routine, I don't know if I'll do more damage than is already done.
      So, I'm continuing with the chiropractor treatments, which spinal decompression was added to on my last visit. He has a doctor on staff two days a week, and I have an appointment to see them tomorrow.

    I just had a colonoscopy. My diagnosis was diverticulosis. Had three small poloyps removed and I was told internal hemorrhoids. Was not told to come in for a follow up on how to handle my flair ups. Just given antispamatic meds if and when i get a flair up. I cannot tolerate that medication. Therefore I deal with up to three days of intestinal pain. During this time, my appetite tremendously decreases. I just do not want to eat. When I start feeling better, i start eating again. Only when i feel hungry. My gastro doc first suggested the FOD map diet. I still am doing this but not 100% but pretty close.
    I feel like i have to do my iwn research in feeling better. After three days of feeling yucky, i can do good for about a week or so, then a flair up happens.
    Not sure why this pattern . I need direction on what steps i need to take to get better.

    I lost 130 pounds in one year I got off the program May 2023. I still needed to lose 40 more pounds so I started doing the carnivore diet. I’ve been doing that for three months now only eating beef butter bacon and eggs , a couple of days ago I had pain in my lower left side that radiated down my leg and my back on the same side. I’ve never experienced this kind of pain during the time the pain was happening. I had diarrhea something terrible today actually just now I just went through this again, the pain has subsided now the diarrhea has slowed down.
    I am a smoker and trying to quit that awful have it to so I’m sure this is playing a big part as well as all the red meat I’ve been eating. Found out I had the litis part last year when hopitalized because of blood needing. To be caught by pads. Another attack last month. Painful stuff.

    Thank you so much for this video! I've had a consistent pain in my lower left abdomen that I think may be diverticulitis. Would you recommend I see my obgyn or my general provider for diagnosis? (Using my son's account to comment lol)

      So glad the video helped! I would start with your primary care provider. 👍

    Very painful and potential for complications that could be fatal.

    I've had diverticulitis twice 10 years apart at age 34 and then now at 44, both times it appeared as blood in the stool, almost needed a blood transfusion both times, I wouldn't wish that nasty colonoscopy prep on my worst enemy 🤦🤦🤦
