    When things go wrong like price drops at big box stores I have seen grown adults completely throw temper tantrums over not getting what they want. Bad behaviour is a staple of our retail society. People are now used to being able to use libel and slander as a way of getting whatever they want anywhere. I have seen the same types of things happen to restaurants. We have trained our society to believe that they are not responsible for how they spend their money with our desire to continuously go the extra mile when addressing their complaints.

      @@Pers0n97 I also like how they leave out the part where the consequences should be of an appropriate retaliatory level to the speech. Someone losing their entire livelihood cause they said something you don't like doesn't fit that. What they mean is "You said something I don't like, so anything I do to you is fair game" which is horrifying. And they think they're on the good side.

      I worked at several retailers in the past and every big box store I worked at had a price guarantee of at least two weeks, usually a month. 3 months if it is a member club card store. If the price goes down, you just go with your reciept to customer service and you get reimbursed for the difference. Circuit City, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, etc. etc..

      Every retail store I've worked at (kmart and 2 Wal-Marts) all gave refunds on the difference when an item went on sale after they bought it. As long as it was the same sku and they had a receipt. I've always known big box retailers to have 30, 60, and sometimes 90 day policies for this. Heck Walmart will honor other retailers sales if you have the flyer.

    I don't know how LGS's do it frankly. They're expected to be a local play space to the community for free to a bunch of cheapskate gamers who raise a fuss if there's a $5 table fee or can't bring in outside food and drink. These same people also order all their cards on big online stores as cheap as they can because the LGS charges $7 more than Amazon for a box so they're obviously greedy.
    I was in my LGS during a big MTG night just to by some paints for 40k and the cashier seemed absolutely shocked anyone was there to actually buy anything - absurd to me. He was acting extremely grateful I bought like $25 worth of paint. It was also annoying as hell trying to shop while the store was crammed wall to wall with tables with a bunch of players I've never, ever seen at the store outside of game nights.
    Too many stores are forgetting the S part of LGS. It's not evil to make some profit off your business venture you're likely dropping 80 - 100 hours a week into. If the 15 year old kid who buys 1 single from you ever 3 months for 50 cents raises a fuss about table fees just tell him to find somewhere else. If your players aren't customers, you don't need them.

      My LGS charges $160 PRETAX for set boosters. $7 more my ass, you can’t physically recoup money from that. Sorry some people don’t like to be hosed. They charge close to $300 for collector boxes as well, PRETAX. I’m sure most stores aren’t that way but I have absolutely no respect for people that take a situation and then use it as an excuse to then screw people even more. It’s also the reason there is never more than 2 people in there and they are just friends of the dudes that are working.

      @Weaver_Games ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@calebclark5615 The adage of "support your LGS" only applies if you actually play at it. If you don't then there's no compelling reason to pay more just cause the store is near you. For me I always just play cards and 40k at home on a table with my friends so I have no personal need for game stores as a play space. That said, they seem to always be full on game night so some people do.
      My comment was simply to show my sympathies towards store owners for the attitudes of the players they frequently host. If you aren't one of those players then you don't apply.

    No other market has second hand sales like collectibles. People don't line up at best buy to buy out the new tvs and mark them up or save them for years to sell at triple the price. That automatically puts a 'value' in customer's minds and loosing any of that value, even when you probably won't resell, hits differently than products you expect to depreciate. Not an excuse for bad behavior though. I try to buy MtG by 'I feel good getting it for this price' so if it fluctuates, I'm still happy.

Usually they just return the TV and come by later in the day or go to a different location to buy it again for the sale price. That said, I think it's a case of younger people not understanding, that most sales are final. Especially with sealed products, those are finite, no refund purchases. - scantily clad chicks in the artwork. (no not the anime thing whatever that's called), but the oldschool magic approach (she's a priest: make her outfit sexy; she's a soldier; sexy armor; she's a angel, ? they should already be sexy, so give her some weapons)
    Your prices don't need to be the bottom cheapest: create brand loyalty for the LGS and customers. MAybe a perks/rewards system for every $100/200 spent. Maybe occasional giveaways/raffles.
    We all have opinions (like those buttcheeks) about various topics/events/politics/etc: but like buttcheeks most people want to keep their distance: they're dirty, smelly, and the other person already has some they gotta deal with.

    This isn't limited to LGSs.
    I run a pharmacy. I am on my own, noone in my employ. One night, after a 12 hr shift, I got a one star review. The reviewer said I saw them and closed up shop and I didn't even bother to see if it was an emergency or if they needed anything.
    What happened was that it was closing time and I was counting that day's earnings, a process which is a lot safer if it takes place after closing up. Because robbers can A) track down pharmacies which are on longer shifts like I was through online lists and B) they will jump you at closing time, when the lights go down.
    And to be 100% real, I've been at this for about 10 years. If it's an emergency, you knock on the door, nvm if it's closing time or not. Had they done that I would had accommodated them.
    Now, every time someone will search my shop, they will see that one star review. I cannot take it down and I cannot stop people from taking it into account. Social media is a power that people believe is a right or a toy.

    The difference between a big box store having the financial ability to give a refund on a product or a difference of sale price. Most LGS don't have that extra money to be able to cover a price check with all of their customers. (If multiple customers decide to price compare..)

There was always a small group of people who would buy it at 50% off (or even full price) then try and return it and re-buy it when it was cheaper. Wasn't a lot we could really do about it. Just saying, it does happen.

    I completely agree with most of what your saying. The only thing I disagree with is "an item goes on sell a week later for 20-30% off, customers aren't outside of target boycotting" that's because most corporate businesses will refund the price difference within a time period of its within the return timeframe. I think customers are just made that these are collectables and essentially buy at your own risk/no refunds available. Not saying every store operates this way, but I feel like most don't. I could be wrong, but we're dealing with collectables that fluctuate in prices. I've worked retail pretty much my whole adult life. Trust me, they do come back asking for that refund when it goes on sale a week later.

    Would like to say that in my years of slingin magic singles on TCG Player. I do definitely agree about the entitled customer being an issue. HOWEVER, it seems to be an American problem exclusively. When I started selling singles outside of the US, not only did my loss rate for those orders cut in half, but if I made a mistake with an order, customers were much more cordial, polite, and willing to accept that I made a mistake, and it wasn't an attempt at fraud. I ship things basically worldwide, including Australia, UK, Germany, etc. Shit gets lost going over the Atlantic and Pacific ocean at a lesser rate than it does in the continental US. I do not believe this is a USPS problem either.

For example, telling me a Wrenn and Seven from Midnight Hunt being worth less than $1 when the set just came out. And they only got on the list because of trying to blame me and saying how cards fluctuate in price when I only brought up that specific issue because I assumed their phone gave them the art card's price as that was the singular version of Wrenn and Seven from Midnight Hunt that was worth less than $1 at the time.

    I think Rudy is underappeciating customer entitlement in retail. If someone buys a TV for 300$ and next week it's on sale for 200$, a lot of them will go back looking to get that 100$ difference. I want to say a lot of those big box stores specifically have policies that either allow or outright encourage that behavior within x number of days.

  • @FrostiKing
    @FrostiKing ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the problem is very multifaceted and the local game stores are the butt of it, the outlet. I think people are frustrated with magic, for, alot of reasons. And when you start dealing with something touchy like, heavily fluctuating card value, it would be like buying stocks, they go up, then you go to sell but they already bombed out by the time you try to sell them and your stuck with them. Or buying one stock and being given another you didn't ask for. People get stuck with it, scalpers get unhappy, and Amazon and Walmart have cultivated a very toxic 'cut out the middle man' on the LGS front and the distribution front, and then when people are upset, they want a voice, big box stores and Wizards clearly don't care, distribution isn't something they can complaint to.... so they vent to the LGS, the normal people who just want to try and get by and give people a place to play their hobby. People want a voice when they are mad, the internet has further instilled that into us, and the wrong people become the outlet for that voice.
    As an example its like Bethesda and Fallout 76, since 76 was on their own service... they controlled the reviews, what people said about it, how it was handled, and disgruntled customers went to steam and other sites, and review bombed the other games, even games Bethesda now owns but didn't make, like the original fallout 1 and 2. People are just upset and want to put a face to vent their anger, and sometimes they pick the wrong person to be the butt of that.

    I've seen first hand customers actually be far worse of a problem at LGS than the people behind the counter. Some folks I had seen get caught pocketing rares from the stores binders while browsing, complaining about quality/online pricing, trade in value, all of it. This actually lead to a store I knew of going under. There was one instance I remember that didn't involve a game store, but a walmart where my brother purchased a -fatpack- -taco bell cravings box- bundle box. Someone had sliced open the cellophane at the bottom of the pack and slid it off gently so they could slide it back on, and sliced the bottoms of each pack open, harvested any cards of value, and neatly stuffed the rare-less packs back into the box, and "resealed" it. It was returned to the walmart and we assume they got away with a refund. What was my brother to do? tell the walmart staff that someone exploited and returned a faulty product? There are slimy people out there that will go to ridiculous lengths to make a buck in the cardboard world.
