We had crashes in 1995 (self inflicted), longer ones starting in 2000 and 2008. The fact it's taken so long has made this correction overdue, and given that this is the combo of a recession and some really bonehead moves by WotC/Hasbro, this one is going to top the rest. But as noted, it's a huge opportunity.
I remember like the summer of 95 I would mow lawns and then ride my bike to miles in the oppressive Midwestern heat to a jewel-Osco to pick up some packs of ice age with my pay. As terrible of an investment as that was, there's definitely an incredible nostalgic feeling about that.
The answer as to why a case of commander masters cost more than a library of Alexandria is because the case has cards that people are playing in a highly played format. Library is only playable in vintage, and commander players will just proxy those vintage cards like moxen, lands, etc with seggsy art for 2 dollars a card instead of paying 1500 for 1 card. Very simple stuff.
$135k of my money entered the RL, after I bought a LP-NM complete Beta set last week. Why now? Opportunity. A collector I know really needed the money, and I've wanted his Power 9 set for years now. He wouldn't break-up the full Beta set, not that I blame him, so I ended up getting the whole thing. Absolutely worth it though, the worst of the Duals is about an 8, and several look unplayed.

I got my Compleat bundle at $84.99. Even pulled an Atraxa for my ultra ribbed, super Timmy, oil slick version. All I really wanted was the counter and I have to say much props to the build quality, it's better than the foils.
I wish they'd reprint dual lands with different names as legendary. It would honor the reserve list, while giving people access to duals in EDH, as well as lowering the entry cost for expensive eternal formats (swap 1 duel for the legendary version).
I was actually thinking something similar. Bomb for EDH players and yeah may make certain decks more playable in Legacy and Vintage while maintaining value in the originals. Basically what they did with Jeweled Lotus.
I wish they would too, I've wondered why they haven't when there's been so many other duplicate cards that just have different names. They must be waiting until they are really hurting to sell cards and need a set to be successful

Maybe because the idea of spending over 200-300$ for 1 piece of cardboard that didn't even cost 5cts to print and can technically be printed as the company wishes is completely strange/crazy/out of consideration for a lot of us ? And that for that price we'd rather have 360-540 pieces of cardboard ? The value you assign to one piece of cardboard is completely arbitrary and can go up and down for eternity, so following this logic I'd rather have 500 of them than 1 when spending that much money, because none of them cost less nor more to print nor used a magical ink making them worth that much, they're literally technically all the same value, only the scarcity makes people speculate and the price range of speculation can be crazy; so what blows me away is that people are willing to spend hundreds/thousands for 1 card (unless you're a collector, but I'm not, so I'm interested in the game rather than having a specific card from a specific edition printed 30 years ago if the same card is available today with new editions ; granted, not the case for all dual lands but something tells me they'll be reprinted at some point). So given that I'm neither rich nor believe I'll ever become so, there's no way I spend that much on one piece of cardboard that didn't cost more to print than any of the 360/540 piece from a booster box.

I’ll be glad if/when I pull a valuable one that remains stable over time but no way I purposely spend hundreds on 1. Glad if you enjoy yourself doing that though, to each their own !
Rudy speaks the truth! I was buying moxes in 2008, 2009 for $400-550 because every market was crashing. By 2010, the prices on eBay were back above $1000 and climbing. The last 18 months have seen the first major pull back in market prices in my memory as a MtG collector. I agree with Rudy here, the next few years will see upward movement in reserve list prices as people realize that the supply is going away. Watch the prices of revised dual lands, they are the best indicator of market movements.

I went to SCGCON Indy with the intention of picking up duals not knowing what to expect after being out of that market for 5+ years. I was pretty surprised by the sheer volume of revised duals that nearly every vendor there was rocking. If you're looking to get in, this seems like as good a time as we've seen in several years
Not when Rudy starts talking about them. I was quietly scooping up cheap core set boxes a few years back and then they ALL popped up 15-20% in a week after Rudy posted a video about it.

And then i have a mint Library of Alexandria, and in lower condition two Bazaar of Baghdad, a Drop of Honey and a City of Brass :) And around 50 duals, full unlimited dual set, one beta, not much revised just 7 or so, plenty of foreign black bordered and nearly a full set of italian white bordered.
I remember when I first started playing mtg as a kid with no money. Was into Pokemon tcg and mage warriors before and pretty much traded them all for mtg cards with other kids. The art, the game play, the depth of game play was really fun. Playing it with 3 other players too, had me hooked!
EB and Babbage's were the places I would go after the arcade. I bought my first MTG booster box (Scourge) and my dad got me my first rated M game (diablo 2)

$119 for Phyrexian Compleat is fair. For our MTG club members we charged $109+tax, local orders only, so it's basically the same amount. Loyalty pays, you may not get a steal of a deal buying from a place you can trust, but as that implies, *you can trust them.* I'm not going to just up and vanish on my customers, and if they have an issue they can talk with me directly. Do you want to save a few %, or do you want reliability, convenience, and support?
Absolutely agree with Phyrexia second wave. Commanders's next product is going to hit the wallet HARD vs conversion. Def have to make a decision and wisely select which will benefit my collection.
I do echo the comment that someone cancelled their preorder because they wanted to buy through you, had the gap in price been smaller I definitely would have, but the jump from $80-119 was enough of a feel bad that I just gave up on trying to get hands on it for now. that being said, its not the end of the world, and if you sell all the other draft/set boxes at a break-even or a loss you deserve to make a profit on stuff thats hyped up.

Rudy, my Phyrexia Complete bundle that I pre-ordered from amazon for ~$80 arrived damaged, not only did I get a complete refund without needing to return it, but I also opened an oil-slick elesh norn, mother of machines. I have never been this lucky before in my MTG history and I've been wasting my money on MTG since 2013.
Reprinting that thing would 100% collapse to zero that box value. People need to remember that it's only value is tied to a pool of 21 cards (+ lands), increasing the supply on such a limited pool will totally destroy not only that box value, but ONE set value as a whole.
Yes I had Electronics Boutique in Marion, IL near my hometown in the 90's, but don't remembe them selling Magic cards. I wasn't playing then so I might just not have noticed. That store is where I got my PS2 on launch day, and they held it for me all day as I was at Murray State University 3 hours away and I skipped my last class to drive back and get it. They held it for me as I had the system, 5 games, 3 extra controllers, a multitap, and 2 memory cards fully paid off. We didn't have Funcoland or Software Etc. in southern IL; did have a Babbage's in Carbondale but they had bad customer service so after they wouldn't take a return on an out of the box defective controller I never bought anything from them again. That location closed in 2021 and the Marion, IL location (now outside of the dead mall) is still open.
Nemesis and onslaught is when I left the game after starting about the same time as Rudy, just stepped back in since dom United and seeing the same thing that made me leave in the first place. Thankfully it's a different age to manage.
I ordered a Compleat Bundle back when first announced last year for ~$80 on Amazon. Got my order this week. It's sitting here on my desk and I am trying to decide what to do with it. Distributor cost for the bundles was $40.. Stop justifying 200% margins because of demand. It was low supply, that doesn't mean you get to rip people off or cancel orders.

Magic did not have rapid sharp declines before 2018. Things either slowly went up, or down. Rapid 50-100% swings are a post-2016 thing.

The compleat bundles are all in EU XD. We have them in stores for 80-90€ which is about the same as USD now.

It was only the cardboard bundle box that was damaged, and the small black card holder insert, the "art print" and cards were in perfect condition.

I ordered a Compleat Bundle back when first announced last year for ~$80 on Amazon. Got my order this week. It's sitting here on my desk and I am trying to decide what to do with it. I could sell it for a quick +$40 or so...but I ordered it because I thought it was cool. So should I just open it and enjoy? Sit on it for 5 years or so? Age old questions....

Distributor cost for the bundles was $40.. Stop justifying 200% margins because of demand. It was low supply, that doesn't mean you get to rip people off or cancel orders.
