Have watched quite a few of your videos now and the one thing that really makes you stand out amongst other technique based teachers is that you adapt the techniques to songs which for want of some way of description .. puts it in real time .. whereby we have an immediate association to the relevance of it within the chord structure thus making it easier to associate to other songs.. it is an immediate light bulb moment ...so well done Eric .. you deserve more credit .. 🙏🙏🙏
YES! That's exactly my thing! THANK YOU FOR NOTICING! By taking a motif, and putting it in a new context you can really look at it and think about it. And, it has an effect on the piece of music you're applying it to!
Thanks so much! I have many French cousins in Paris - Jews who fled eastern Europe in the early 1900s. Some crossed the Atlantic and became my Mother's family, but many stayed in Paris. I'm very grateful that I have a gift for playing, but even more thankful that I have a personality that works well for teaching and sharing!
Amazed. This is something that you not only seem to do so well, and yet are able to communicate what you do with such clarity that others can benefit from it. Simply wonderful! An aside, I think that Robbie Robertson is a very underrated guitarist.
Thanks Robert! Yeah Robbie is one of my favorites. His parts are very soulful and creative - his fits in there just so. Plus, I love watching the guitar duel with Clapton in The Last Waltz. They both play great, but there's something so earnest and visceral about Robbie's solo that wins it for me.
Ok, the opening hammer-on is so hard for me!!! My index finger is getting in the way of the note ringing out. It sounds either dead or muted but not in a good way. I was reluctant to work on the “Hendrix double stop” lessons at first. I love Hendrix I just find to many guitarist emulating him. I’m very glad I did watch and put into use the “Hendrix Double stop” lessons though. As they have helped open up the fret board for me. I’ve always been mystified by playing lead over melody. These lessons help me 100%
Eric Haugen that's why I like your teaching style, friend. Multiple techniques to wade through and assimilate, taught in a very practical and musical way. And being musical is what it's all about!
Thanks so much James! I really appreciate it! And yeah - "I shall be released" is next on my list. Along with "It Makes No Difference." So many great songs to choose from!
This is quite a good idea! I'd just have to figure out the licensing fees for something like that. Currently, I'm finishing up and EP of psychedelic fuzz rock originals - but after that.........
This is a great lesson for me because I started wrapping my thumb to play chords around 10+ years ago, totally skipped that capo style chord structure; thanks, you do this really well.
Thank you Eric! Appreciate how you always use melodic pedal steel and country 3rd licks and continue to make them sound fresh and never trite..""mmm delicious!"
@@EricHaugenGuitar still working my way through this, got it about halfway. My issue is getting the phrasing right! So much subtle (but super soulful) stuff going on here.
When I watch your lesson analysis I have to laugh watching you enjoy your soulful technique as much as I do; and I didn't think that was possible. Well done!
Thanks Jon! I love to play, I love to teach! And yeah, sometimes I crack myself up :-) You should see what ends up getting cut out of these vids - I get pretty silly sometimes.
Well...... you know Eric... as SRV said: "....90% of your tone is in... your hands..." Then I'm perfectly sure you would be able to make the worst chinese chibson sounds like a million bucks guitar.... You're a Master in your art... Don't forget about it and don't be too modest neither ;) (ps: I know... too much "don't".... sorry for that hehehe) Be well..
I've watched a ton of your videos - they're always outside. Was weird not to hear you say "I'm using my Stryman Deco for a little bitta reverb," though ;)
I'm always trying new things, sonically :-) The secret is - I actually use a little valhalla reverb on all my vids. Sometimes on the whole master track, sometimes in addition to the strymon flint. I wanted to hear what is was like with no flint, only valhalla. Sounds a little cleaner this way. Not sure which I like more 😑
Thanks David! Those 2 really work well together! Next up, I'm gonna give this treatment to Lucinda Williams' "I Lost It." It's gonna be tasty and delicious!
Hey Eric, this is great. I've been looking for the original slide tuning used on the Dylan recording (studio version), but I want to get that feel in the Band's version's key. Any idea of an open slide tuning that would work in A (right?)? I really want to lay on that slide lick from the Dylan studio version.
Oh yeah I've seen that - I don't know where he gets his fills from! That dude keeps me up at night! Him and Mateus Asato. Most players, I can sorta see what they're thinking. But those guys are from outer space!
Nice guitar arrangement Eric. Can I make a request? "Brooklyn" by Steely Dan. Great little tune and the steel guitar in it should inspire you to come up with some great stuff.
ooh good idea! I love the all the gtr players of Steely Dan! Plus, I'm eternally jealous of Jeff Skunk Baxter's mustache 👨 I've got plans to evolve my arrangement of "Do It Again," and I'm almost done with a Hendrix-y version of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number." I'll add "Brooklyn" to the list!
This is great! I like it so much I subscribed to your channel and picked up the .pdf from your website. I love that you're posting material from awesome artists like Sturgill Simpson and JD McPherson that are hard to find. For practicing and playing this particular solo, it would be great to have a backing track to play along to; is there any way that's possible?
You know, in an ideal world people like me would spend 2 seconds more looking at your website, locate the "Backing Tracks" link from the Tablature drop-down menu, and spare you the effort of having to reply to questions like this. Oh well :) If you're ever inclined to consider suggestions on songs and solos, I've been obsessed with guitarist Jerry Miller's solo on the song "Queen of the Minor Key" by Eilen Jewell for a few years now; it seems to be in a similar vein to some of the other stuff you've done. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/oHqwgxC5sQI/w-d-xo.html
Hey Eric, what you recomed me for increase my way to play. I use a fender strato, barely read keys of chord. I want to study because I have a god ear and I enjoy so much playing Stones songs in standard tuning and open G stuff. Thanks! Hug from Brasil
Hi Federico! My main advice would be to work on the 5 CAGED chord shapes and their corresponding pentatonic scales. Practice doing chords, and then fills, back and forth. You'd be amazed at how much it opens up your playing!

I'm working on it! My video editing skills aren't quite up to the level of getting the tab rolling along the screen, but hopefully I'll figure it out soon enough!
Eric is the Bob Ross of guitar playing, love his tone.
