Simultaneously Improve Your Groove & Your Scales with These 3 Exercises

  • Conext - it's all about context. I know what it feels like to learn some nifty new scale grid, but not know exactly what to do with it. Guitar is often taught with rhythm and lead playing as two completely separate disciplines. I try very hard to bring them back together, as that's what all my heroes do.
    This lesson is a recommendation on what to do once the you know the Blues, Minor, & Major scales reasonably well, and are looking for ways to get comfortable with them beyond the "up the ladder, down the ladder" kinda thing :-)
    Rather than focus on speed, I think about chords and rhythm. I like being able to hear what harmonies go with the scale I'm practicing - it's a much more musical way of working. Side benefit - it's actually quite tricky on the brain to switch back and forth from single-note to chordal playing!

    i paid for two years of lessons with a guitar teacher trying to get better at lead work and this lesson in less than 12 minutes was better than that entire two year span of helping put everything together.

      It’s a great way to hear how the scales interact with their backgrounds - more fun than just running them up and down 🤙

      Yes! Context!
      Scales by themselves are the most boring thing in world - but if you put them in a harmonic and rhythmical context they come alive!

    Thanks Eric, great lesson. Had to buy this one, super reasonable pricing, which I appreciate. This is the kind of playing I want to get better at. I think of it as Jamming with your self without a looper pedal.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah exactly!
      Loopers are great, but don’t prepare us for real time fill placement when jamming with a group of living musicians!

    I love the rake that you do. It really pops on the Dark Funk lesson (I've learned the form and mostly got the timing, I've even got a good amount of the muting ... but that requires the most diligence). Here, too, you use the rake to great effect. I play with my fingers, but I should clearly work on playing with a pick.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah yes - I think you can get away with using your fingers for the rake if you flick out with the nails side. I just tried it and it sounded pretty cool!

      This exercise is great for opening up our thoughts about what chords can be - more an "area" of notes, rather than a tight grip.
