Outstanding. The piece at the end about only needing to replace the diaphram and how to get at this without dismantling the entire cistern saved me a ton of money and work. Thank you sir!
James, you are a Godsend! My toilet wasn't flushing well and all the videos I'd watched talked about replacing the entire siphon, which entails removing the cistern from a close-coupled toilet, as per your video. Thankfully I found this video and it's the only one to mention how to replace the diaphragm with a new piece of flexible plastic. Thankfully I already had a 2 piece siphon, so could remove half without taking off the cistern. Found that the original diaphragm (blue plastic) was brittle and had cracks and an entire piece missing. Cut a bit out of a plastic bag (one that had originally had gravel in, so relatively heavy-duty plastic) and cut to size. Works perfectly and fixed for free! Many thanks!

I had this exact problem about 6 weeks ago. Managed to get it sorted watching some of your older videos. Only problem I ran into was the cistern was quite small, so a new siphon unit didn’t fit. Ended up getting a fluid master one that was much slimmer. Thanks for your videos!
Changed mine today. Whew, plumbing is tough! Two points I noted that might help someone: Cover the pan water entry hole with a cloth and don't put screws on the window sill above the toilet. You will rue the day you were born if you drop something in there. A cistern is polished on the front but rough everywhere else. Putting it in a bath t on rinse it out will scratch the bath - put a towel down first.
Absolute legend mate! Flush was very weak/not happening. It was the diaphragm, cut a piece of the exact same shape and size from a clear flimsy folder from Ryman I had laying around and now is working as good as new. Piece of advice for anyone...if your toilet is like this and has that metal holding the bolts...mark the position before you loose it. Had to put it on and off three times to get it how it was hahaha.
James, I am so sorry for not watching your videos of late 😂🙏 I've gone to the dark side and started an Electrician Apprenticeship at 42 years old. No joke, found an old boy willing to take me through. Apparently water and electricity does not mix❓❓❓ when I pointed out Hydro Electric Power... I got sacked. Damned if you do and damned if you don't 😄🙏
Thank you so much for this - I had no idea how the siphon worked until I watched this. Replaced the diaphragm using an empty persil laundry capsules pouch cut to size and it works perfectly now. Didn't have to call the plumber or buy a new part - Result!
Today i fixed mine which was the same issue by watching this video, The Only note is "You don't need to removed the toilet cistern, you can just remove and swap the syphon unit " Thank you for your videos
Used your videos for not one but two toilets that wouldn't flush properly in my house. Just like to say "Thank you very much". They were extremely helpful + entertaining, unlike others I could mention! 😁
Thanks for this video, was able to replace our syphon on our only toilet and have a useable toilet late one evening. Replaced for one that’s detachable, what a good idea whoever came up with that!
Briiliant, thanks for this. Seeing this gave me the confidence to go in and see what the problem was when the flush only worked intermittently. I made a new diaphragm out of some old damp proof membrane (1000 gauge plastic) I had lying around. Now it flushes like new. Brownie points when the missus gets home, smug mode.😁
Briiliant, thanks for this. I made a new diaphragm out of a dog food bag. Now it flushes like brand new. Saved myself a tidy sum on calling out a plumber. Feeling rather smug 😀.
Hi You could syphon the water out the tank, with a piece of hose, fill the hose up with water put finger over both ends, put one end in water and other end in bowl below and it will sysphon out..Fred.
Thanks for this video. I, just a few hours ago, took my flush unit apart and replaced the diaphragm with a bit of plastic from a folder wallet. Flushing every time now. Thanks again
Hi, James.. have you also got a sort of pump with a hose that can fit 15mm pipe and suck some water from the central heating? It happened to me that the drain off valve was not on the lowest point of the sustem and I had to install a tower rail and connect it to pipes that were very low on the wall and I couldn't solder the return one because of the dripping water not even with bread. Somebody suggested a vacuum cleaner for water. Any ideas I could get from your Amazon store?
I like the 4" rubber diaphragms rather than plastic. Think they last longer. If I ever run out of replacements/spares, I rummage through the missus' knickers drawer. I've been reading up about "black holes." Gravitational density. Even time slows down and light is sucked in. See Messrs. L. Krauss and S. Hawking.
Great video, funny , professional, clear, concise and a very good teacher to boot. Well done young man, I hope you lecture in some college somewhere. Ideal for students of the trade.
My OCD tells me that that flush handle is pointing too high on the cistern James !. A different length rod would have fixed this problem ?. Sorry, this type of thing would drive me absolutely crazy !.
I doubt you have the time to read these comments but I hope your channel is filling your pockets with cash. You deserve it. Have you ever thought of cloning yourself and selling a hundred units to every city.
I had the same job a few months ago. Continental type rubber seal and metal clamp has disintegrated. Only problem was, I was still getting leaks from the back of the closed couple section, even with new parts all round. Is it just luck of the draw if the toilet uses a donut type seal or a continental type seal?
Screwfix have a Euroflo Cistern Coupling Kit (4016D) for £5, which I hear works better than the metal plates, and do not rust and seal better. Also some plumbers clean all the corrosion and crap from the toilet box, before fitting the new parts to prevent leaks.
Have you ever had the problem of when you fit the new domed sealing ring it sometimes leaves a gap from the bottom of the filling valve thread and the water inlet pipe, mainly caused because the new sealing ring is brand new and not compressed like the old one. Even after tightening down on the wing nuts it doesn’t close the gap enough to allow the water inlet to be screwed back onto the filling valve neck. Any tips on what to use to bridge the gap? Cheers 🍻
I've just done one of these close coupled toilets with a similar situation. I'm not a plumber but what I used was a foam close couple doughnut washer. Expensive for what they are (less than a fiver) but certainly gets round the issue of the cistern not going down enough. Other than that Screwfix do a fairly slim silicone close couple doughnut washer as well for a couple of pounds. I have found either of these to be effective with no leaks first time! More importantly no call backs......Hope that helps in some way.
I've just cut out a new diaphragm out of a Rexel pouched pocket and it works again 😅 I did order a proper diaphragm as well. Thanks for that video, now my missus can stop moaning about the toilet that one thing less👍
I think the goal with that red pump is to pump once and then let the syphon action do the rest of the work. There's a little valve on top that needs to be closed for that to happen. Ofcourse if there's a leak it probably will not work as air gets sucked in. All the best, from Belgium, where toilets look quite different!
this has just happened to our toilet and even more fun the inlet valve is leaking underneath where there is a corner fitment so for now emptied water out as luckily have another toilet
Our Cistern handle ,has to be raised up by hand, the bugger never returns more than a third way up, and won't flush from there. I've dismantled most of it, but couldn't find the problem, after using Vaseline, and even a return spring. Apart from full replacement, any ideas ?
The diaphragm is designed to fail so you buy a new one, knowing this I made a new diaphragm from some old kitchen lino, WOW, works better than the origanal plastic , I also super glued the lino to the base.
Why am I even watching this? I've been fixing broken karzis for the last 30 years. I just wish most of mine came apart that easily. The bolts and and screws on most of my jobs are usually so corroded it's either a hacksaw blade with a cloth wrapped around it, a grinding disk on a Dremel Drill, or a whole new toilet.
Would best practice when removing cistern not be to leave taking the screws holding it to the wall out last? Then you’re not putting any pressure on the water or the coupling to the toilet? That’s how I do it but I confess I may not have a clue what I’m on about. Most of what I do know about plumbing has come from this channel…
Hello, We are in Canada, with the same toilet, an old European (English?) model and have successfully replaced the Siphon part but found the connecting part in shape of a lozenge or diamond (frange?) is all rusty, and needs changing too. We can't find it the the local Hardware store and need to buy it online. Would anybody be kind enough as to tell me what it's called?
I don't know what it's commonly referred to but it's part of a close coupling kit which includes washers, bolts, nuts, doughnut and the plate bit. Probably of no use to you now but hopefully helpful to someone else.
I had a leak from a raised cistern. Thought it would be a nice easy job.. Arrived and the cistern was hanging off of the wall because the screws had rusted out. No isolation to the water supply just to the toilet, had to turn off to whole house and fit one. But the supply pipe was behind the back of kitchen base unit. Disconnected everything and the pan wobbled. Screws had rusted out on that as well because of a slow leak on the pan connector which had been siliconed to hell. After a lot of cleaning and a heater in the room for a few hours, I could put the thing back together with a new fill valve (was old and everything else was being replaced) and new flush valve with built in overflow, new pan connector. Porcelain was the only original thing there 🤣
James do you have some good Plumber Nickname's ?.....My Dad worked with someone who was called Two Metres as he was like 6ft whatever...also know Dusty Miller....Bush Gardener...and Timber Woods ?
Try not to overtighten plastic nuts. I would always turn the mains water off before even attempting to work on plastic nuts, best to be safe than sorry
Mate this is like pornhub, gives a false idea of plumbing. The old slotheads don't move, the wingnuts are pissed on and crumble and the old dougnut you chance, leaks 🤣😂
Close couples can be the best or the worst thing evar! Praise be plastic wing nuts on rusted bolts. Sad the plumber be with rusted plate, bolts and nuts. Stainless be the way. Hi James, That's a Great tip filling cistern with water to check for leaks before re-fitting to base, i will def be doing that in the future. 5 stars

This is my job for tomorrow. Looks like I’m going to have to make the spiders homeless.

Very helpful ta. How do we stop a leaky bottom though?? Just tighten it??
Thank you for the great video. I replaced the diaphragm and it’s working perfect. Thank you very much ❤
Did mine only tonight. Slight leak from the 'extension' piece on the service valve. Quick tighten and all good.
Excellent video
Bare knees all over toilet floor James!! yuk😂
I’m an adult trainee these videos help so much especially when I’m on my own in a years time great work mate keep it up 👍🏻
Thanks for the video. Just fixed my toilet by replacing the plastic! 👍🏻
Just replaced the cistern with a new one - took me an hour. Many thanks for such an informative video.
I'd normally swap the inlet valve at the same time. A brass piped Pro 45 everytime.👍👍
Very entertaining video. Thanks for the extra camera angles too, much appreciated!
Thanks great to known I've only to remove the inside for diaphragms only great tips

My OCD tells me that that flush handle is pointing too high on the cistern James !.
A different length rod would have fixed this problem ?.
Sorry, this type of thing would drive me absolutely crazy !.
I noticed it aswell Jeff, im sure it's supposed to be pretty flat !
it's got an erection
If Toilet has an external overflow, do you recommend blanking it off and using a modern siphon unit with built-in overflow?
Yes definitely, most new syphons will have an internal overflow.
"Not after the injunction" 🤣
Thank you so much. Can’t believe I managed to fix it thanks to you👍
What is the camera do you use and how does it help you?
Great video James your videos are most helpful.
This channel is amazing! Thank you. I just need the same for electrics so I can see what they mean when the explain certain aspects. 👊🏾

How much are you charging for a job like that please
Thanks

Yes. James is flush with success 😂

Omg the man change my toilet when he could do this omg
James surely you would replace the fill valve at the same time, I do
Nice one Jimmy. But seriously, have they painted their tiles 😵
Bloody legend 🙌🏼
thank it works
Makita cordless wet vac is what you need to get that water out fast. 👍

new bog every time as the corrosion is piss
Toilets cisterns. Good money fixing them but all you can think of is your head is near where someone takes a dump everyday 🤣

You can use a plastic milk bottle I've done it before to get out of trouble one weekend
for a second there i thought you were using a parkside cordless drill 😂😂
What happened to your bathroom change at home? Think you got to the end of 1st fix then sweet FA.

Damn - why didn't I do the trick with the filling up in the bath to check for leaks! Next time !
Nice veto!
I did this job in the week, literally took 3 hours to get those corroded cistern bolts off 😭
Use a lot of WD40 or whatever lubricant anti corrosion that will eat the rust for you
@@antoniogalluccio4213 I did, it still took a long time. I used a hack saw in the end (which I wish I had thought of before)
Use a Multi tool with a metal cutting blade it makes things so much easier
James do you have some good Plumber Nickname's ?.....My Dad worked with someone who was called Two Metres as he was like 6ft whatever...also know Dusty Miller....Bush Gardener...and Timber Woods ?
Excuse me sir, you have forgotten to put a new doughnut on.
Didn’t know Bradley Cooper knew how to unplug the toilet
Takes 5 seconds to empty with wet vac 😀😀
Everytime I touch one of those plastic isolation valves they end up leaking 🤔😩
Put some vaseline or grease on them bolt threads to give the next person a fighting chance
Great not to have an overflow to reconnect anymore.
Try not to overtighten plastic nuts. I would always turn the mains water off before even attempting to work on plastic nuts, best to be safe than sorry
My toilet won't flush and I'm not confident enough to fix it myself. I'm also disabled. Can anyone help me?
Did it all but I’ve got water coming out all over the floor!!!🙄
Should have took the lid off the toilet to paint the tiles.
You didn't show how to fix that problem without replacing the whole flush unit
Mate this is like pornhub, gives a false idea of plumbing. The old slotheads don't move, the wingnuts are pissed on and crumble and the old dougnut you chance, leaks 🤣😂
Truths there mate! 😂😂😂
guess no one notice the tap is leaking as well , lol
Say, you ever seen a shower with carpet in it?

What happened to finishing your own bathroom 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Or just use a sponge 🧽
where is the overflow?
Overflows through syphon then back into the pan.
Algorithms
Is this a comercial james?
Erm no!
it destroyed my toilet
Made in China mate.
