A-Body MONSTER! 1965 Plymouth Barracuda 360 Five Speed Build Gets Buttoned Up And Thoroughly Tested

- On today's episode, we're looking at something special - Mitchell's 1965 Plymouth Barracuda. Everything about this build is incredible. From the four wheel Wilwood disk brakes, to the incredibly well built 360 with Magnum heads and EFI, the Tremec TKX transmission, and the fabricated 8 3/4 rear axle, no expense was spared in turning this factory 273 3 speed Barracuda into a ripping, snarling, handling monster. The project isn't exactly "finished" (not that any project ever is,) but at least we can take it for a test drive... I wonder what that's like.

Thx for the nice comments. Jamie definitely has the best viewers.
I was a bit apprehensive since, in case it wasn't clear, the car was just bolted together to get it on a trailer. I'm getting ready to start a channel so there will be plenty more action on the barracuda plus other mopar's, dune buggies and motorcycles. Don't hold your breath, it'll happen eventually. Thanks again
This is a sick Barracuda. Looks like a blast. When I finish my Duster I want to do one of these next.
That’s one angry fish
So pretty! I want one so bad now
That thing is WICKED!
Love it.
Mitchell, you're awesome for building your brothers car to 'Monster' status!
Great example of potential for these old A-Bodies. What a fun car
That is a BEAUTIFUL barracuda. The best body style. I’m totally no biased at all
Clearly 😅
That thing is way awesome! Thanks for sharing Mitch and allowing Jamie to show us!
You just drove my very first car i owned. The same color without the hood scope. Also I'm 72. Wish I had my cuda back. Even stock It was a fun car to drive.
Thanks for the great content.. Very interesting clip.. Cheers from Australia..
In '73 I bought a '64 Barracuda. Went with a local dealer to an auction to help drive back anything he bought. Across the block came the Barracuda, absolutely cherry inside and out, 273 factory 4-speed, that surely burnt a quart of oil just driving onto the block. Told the dealer to buy it, I'd go to $500, got it for $350.
I had a 340 stroked to 408 with a six pack and a 9" cutdown for an A body. Originally built for a dirt stockcar but went a different route. Weeks work with the frame, homemade bars, front discs/spindles off the same AAR the 340 came from, and everything fit like a latex glove. I was happy and the girls loved that dropdown trunk panel.
I knew I should of kept that car for life-still try to kick my own butt for not doing so-but didn't.
65 Barracuda was my 1st car, automatic unfortunately, but still a great car. Awesome. Richard Ehrenberg of Mopar Action would have a heart attack seeing those heim joints. Great video.👍🍸
I’ve already seen one heim joint seized up in one of the fancy strut rods that wasn’t that old… I’m not a fan.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I was just about to ask. Thanks 👍
LOVE IT!
Boy, that squealing belt sure does sound familiar!
It’s only slightly horrible and awful…
needs some belt dressing...lol
I have a nicely restored and highly upgraded 65 Cuda. I put a crate 318 withe an Edelbrock 4bbl in it. Every where I drive it around the outskirts of Portland people are drawn to it. Like myself they have not seen another one for decades. Bigger wheels with mags really improve the stance. The torque and power are enough for fun. strong pulling acceleration. Had to put discs on the front for safe stopping.
Sweet ride great car n channel 😁
I had 3 Barracudas and 4 other Valiants of that generation. I was happy, but I'm done with them! When my 1965 273 Barracuda had no rings left, it was sweet to just drop a spare 318 into the hole and gain torque! It got rear-ended less than a week later, but I found a '66 Barracuda (with rust painted over) and this time did it "right" with a 340 (2.02 X-heads), a 727 tranny, 8.75 rear end, etc. A year later the subframe rust got too bad to pass inspection, so all the goodies went into a '66 Valiant Signet, but that rusted out after another year.
I finally found a rust-free West Texas '65 Barracuda with a slant 6, but after purchase, the work needed to fit everything into another narrow pre-67 hole with no room near the steering box etc. just didn't seem like fun any more.
Fun involved slipping a SBC mill into a Vega and still having room to reach everything.
Yeah… I love these things, but they sure don’t have room to play under the hood. Fitting headers for example is absolutely ridiculous - as admired in this video. GM sure made things easy, didn’t they? I could be slightly jealous.
WOW This car is UPGRADED EVERYWHERE I SHOULD KNOW , I have a 1965 Barracuda too bought it 1986 for 250$ a Senior in high school Have a 1973 , 360 LA block now(5th motor) 1967 904 trans with 3200 stall converter (2nd). Original trans got ripped in half by the 360 engine and a 8 3/4 rear end with 3.91 gears!!(original was 7 1/4 with 3.28 gears) Sucks on the highway (4 grand at 65 mph) but worked great at Bandimere speedway till the engine broke, lifter failed and damaged the Camshaft Trashed the bearings, shut engine off after oil pressure went to 10 psi. 450 horsepower easy to get with 360 small block and still be streetable. Want to upgrade to stroked 408 small block next!!! 500 ft.Pounds. Car is 2700 pounds , 3000 lbs with me in it and tools in that Tiny tiny trunk. Would cost me 20 grand to upgrade to the level of this car with me doing all the Labor AWESOME CAR!!!
What a great car. You can do things with cars that I’ve never been able to do. You have a new sub.
Love this car. Dunno how I missed this vid. The sound it rumbles is pure bliss!
I like that car! As far as people thinking they're ugly? I totally disagree but then again I Loved my old 440 powered 62 Plymouth Sport Fury (an old street rat I turned into a wanna be bracket car) I built it mostly myself, welded home made sub frame connectors, 6 point roll bar, gutted doors, plexiglass door glass rear quarter windows even a lexan windshield. And I still' love the body style of a 62 Plymouth Sport Fury...
Miss my 66 Cuda had a built 360 727 with shift kit 8 and 3quarter rear with 2.76 gears and a mini spool electric ignition very fast and fun
And I’m a Barracuda lover too
I have 6. 2 of them are Formula S.
This thing is a beast!
That's my favorite body style barracuda! One day I will have one my friend......one day.
Never heard so many squeaks and squeals coming from one car at one time lol But you got them ironed out. And yes it is a beast. Cool car.
Love this video. Keep up the good work brother. I enjoy the info and humor !!!!!
Nice, that small fish has a big heart.
The best thing about work in progress are those safety Vbelt letting people know to stay out of your way. Looks great make me want to swap my six for that v8
Don't know if it's changed from '63, but you'll need a V8 drag link & if you do have a '63 the windshield wiper motor's EXACTLY in the way of the distributor. '64-up fine. I've got a '63 Valiant & Dart GT Convertible.
It’s one of those projects where you don’t mind that it takes a year or two, gotta be thoroughly tested and all
Narrow body A bodies are definitely a challenge in many ways. Cool machine!
9.53K subs + 1
Welcome 22 Jamie definitely has cool stuff for content and has a live show on sun eve's!
Sharp car! Besides a midas touch, a dry road with shoulders might improve it some :-)
I like it. My dad had a 68 with a wild 440.
I had a 65 formula S Barracuda back in the 60s.
273 4bbl and a 4 speed. Balanced and blueprinted engine,Racer Brown Direct connection camshaft.
Installed an 8/34 rear end housing and 4:56 gears.
Bad street race car back in the day.
Oddly I had a 71 Dodge Demon 340 after the Barracuda.
That’s awesome! I am planning to build a whacky 273 at some point in the future, and it will live in front of a 4 speed and 4.88s. It’s just a little guy, but I want to see what it can do.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I can't wait to see what you do with a 273. I rebuilt mine to stock except for a Isky E-4 cam. Factory timing is 10 deg BTC but I think it wants more advance at idle (it sounds better when I give it some more timing). Your thoughts?
@@LongIslandMopars Oh, I can *guarantee* it wants more timing at idle. I did a video about this recently called "Performance Timing Curves For Dummies Like Me" that might have some helpful tips for how to get there.
Beautiful machine... I think I'm in love
Again.
Nice car. I like the upside down 10, 110 and 120 on the speedo. Looks like same dash as what went into Aussie made vc and ap mopars
My first car was a 65 Dodge Dart 270 2 door post with the 225 slant six and column shifted automatic. I remember I had charging issues sometimes, especially in the cold of winter. The voltage regulator wasn't build into the alternator, was mounted on the firewall. I would just rap on the regulator box and the internal contacts would un-stick, and the car charging system would function again.
Just found your channel and looking forward to watching more episodes.
That’s awesome. On my ‘67 Barracuda, I was absolutely amazed when I got it running and the crappy old mechanical regulator that had been out in the elements with no hood for years still worked. I’m usually working with 70+ stuff that has the electronic regulator. I couldn’t begin to count how many of those I’ve replaced over the years. I’m literally changing one in a Valiant today. Thanks for watching!
You are one lucky dude to get to work on some AWESOME cars like that one.
Dude… I know. It’s ridiculous. This one (and yesterday’s 300, in fact) actually ended up here directly due to my exploits on this channel, and that’s really amazing to me.
@@DeadDodgeGarage All I can say is keep up the good work. Who knows what will drive up to your shop next.
What a great car ! 🎉
The PO of my car did a poor install of the Wilwood clutch master, cracked the firewall. That was fun to repair.
Wow…
Really cool car . I happen to have a Don Garlits Super tach . Good video .
I love it, i had a 65 commando 273 4 speed and it was fun but this one is mean and nasty 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
I had one of those. I swapped in a 69 318 and a m-22 crash box. Then it needed different gears. I wound up with a really nice build.
Those early cuda's are just plain awesome!!!!!
I've owned 4 Barracudas 1965 1966 273 hipo 4 spds and a 383 4spd transplant way under rated chassis cool body styles
That thing sounds awesome.
It’s nuts. It’s so good.
That car is a serial killer. It's just waiting for you to make a mistake. I love that.
I don't know why they would even consider that car ugly. I think you'd better is an icon of a car. They're beautiful even when they're totally ugly. Ness, they're still a beautiful car could be worse. It could be a pacer or a grandman. But as far as I'm concerned, all Dodge proxy, beautiful Plymouth barracuda. Very beautiful car.
Good lord man! Sway bars and subframe connectors and I bet that thing will handle like it's on rails. Tell Mitch that it needs steelies and dog dish caps!
They’d have to be good sized steelies to fit over the wilwoods 😃 I’m not saying those would be my first choice for wheels, but I do like the look.
On a 64-65 Cuda? No. It has the right wheels, maybe Cragars. Front and rear sway bars definitely make them handle better. I've had one in my life since my mother bought one new in April 64.
I would love it somebody else bought those Expensive Rallys and did a test video for a guy ! 😂 U no like in a way to make content ! 😂
Remember that Rambler got on the fish branding bandwagon with their Marlin 😊
Oh, I remember. Haha.
Cool build. I've always wanted to build an all aluminum Keith Black Hemi and stick it in a 65 or 66 Cuda. Torque arm, watts link, 35 spline axles, TKX or six speed magnum. IMO, the looks of the car is improved with rear radiused wheel arches. A Valiant Station wagon has radiused rear quarter panels.
Funny, radiused rear wheel openings are in his plan for the future.
This one drives almost identical to the 66 I had with the 340 except mine was a holly 4 bbl because snipers were not out yet, yes I’m old lol 😂, and it was a 727 tq flt instead of the manual. If I got on it as you did this one, she did not like keeping the front tires on the ground. I had the same interior minus aftermarket head rests but looksed as tho it just rolled off the factory floor. I loved that car more than the ex wife and miss it everyday!! I’m looking for another solid one tho so I can build a Petty Clone. I live 20 miles from Richard and his museum so it’s only fitting to build a clone and maybe be lucky enough to get him to sign the dash, lol.
This guy's a genius
I don’t know about all that, but thank you.
OMG! I love it!
I have a 65 barracuda with a 340 a 3 speed 727 and 456 diff that was originally built for the quarter mile. It comes of the line on its rear wheels
That’s amazing. I have seen a picture of my ‘71 Demon 340 4 speed doing that in ‘73.
@@DeadDodgeGarage cool right!!
Reminds me a little of my 64 dart w/340 4spd. I built it almost 50yrs ago, and still have it. Kinda brutal combo.
That’s awesome! My 340/4 speed Demon is fun enough. Shaving off another couple hundred pounds with the early car surely doesn’t hurt…
@DeadDodgeGarage my late friend, Art R., helped build the between the frame rail headers for it. We spent a weekend and a case of beer in Dennis Smythe's shop building them maybe 45 yrs ago. The best my dart ran was 13.09 @104mph at SIR.
This car is badass
Love the car, I own a 66 Barracuda the 318 is locked up but one day it will have another 318 or a 360 I'm still not sure if want go oem injection or just make it Carved yet.🤞
Carbed not Carved lol
Personally? I’m into carbs these days. Cool!
Very cool '65 👍😍👍
I'm definitely making up my mind ! No more arguing with myself ! I want to make my Dart More Just like this SICK barracuda uve just introduced to us ! 😂 Wicked Video.
A buddy had a 69 Baracuda in high school. 383 with Nitrous. It made the front of your neck hurt.
I’ve ridden in a 440 Charger with a 150 shot. The driver’s seat was bent backwards…
these are not ugly built way better than 67 and up better looking yes. A body cheapened up and i love my 67 69 a body,s
That would be a fun car
In the middle of fixing up my 66 barracuda. Need to weld up the floor pans next. Joys of Ireland so much rain means lots of rust
Sounds like home… we don’t get the horrible salt rust in the frames here, but we get floors and quarter panels from trapped rain water. My ‘66 Barracuda needs all of that too.
Thanks for the video gives me a kick to get after my one again keep putting jobs off
That’s so-called flapper valve that’s in the filler tube. It’s called a rollover valve if you roll that car all the gas don’t run out of the gas tank.
No, I don’t think a random metal flapper with no gasket of any kind is going to prevent the flow of fuel better than the cap sealing it. 🙂
u need to wire up park lamps to stay on with headlights.. cool mod.. love ya keep on keeping on
Need? Naaaaa… I like them how they’re supposed to be. But having it all lit up would be cool. Thanks!
@DeadDodgeGarage yeah ur right.. all that wiring n crimping.. heavy thinking, shrink wrapping... whew I got winded just thinking about it .. 😅 guess I better go take a nap
Awesome Barracuda Here Fishy Fishy Fishy fish 🐟🐟🐟
Those bars in the rear end, serve the same purpose as ladder bars or four link bars
They’re called cal tracks, and I am fully aware of what they do. I don’t understand the point any of these comments.
Sweet car in copper with those wheels - even think the blocky head rests were installed well. While a MoPar guy from birth (first ride home was in Dad’s ‘52 Belvedere) the 11 year old me was not big on the first gen ‘cudas. But we humans grow and evolve…I’ve owned my 273 ‘64 since ‘86.
My first car bought in 1974 was a 69 fastback Barracuda, 63k miles, no dents/rust, good paint, 318 auto, Chrysler/Plymouth dealer...$375 out the door....and my name is Mitchell....
😮
Awesome car,, love the color and wheels! Would be sweet if it was stock, and the mods are all perfect. I'd want sway bars and maybe some corner happy shocks on mine, otherwise I wouldn't change a thing... Definitely no wax!
I never dealt with Pertronix, I know they do electronic ignition for lots of applications, but I thought it was a bit more sophisticated than that... I reckon it works, but I would term that "crude but effective".
I meant "would be sweet even if it was stock". I wasn't trying to say it would be better stock.
Yep - bars and subframe connectors are coming. I’m not sure what the plan is for shocks, but if they match everything else he has done… haha.
This isn’t a drop in Pertronix, it’s a complete distributor that they build. But essentially, it’s their ignitor 3 module in a GM type body adapted to fit a Mopar engine - very much like an MSD. It’s a nice setup, but the advance limiting deal is definitely not sophisticated… I bet some stronger limiting straps wouldn’t be too hard to make.
And This is Exactly Why a guy Reads Others Comments 😂 , u learn COOL Intel !
Love that car
awesome
Wicked cool car
Man its a killer car
I have a '71 Duster with FiTech efi. It would cut off till I set the IAC steps. Primarily when turning corners.
Interesting. I’ve played with IAC ramp down a bit but probably need to do more.
I have a '66 that I have dreams of building. (once I retire)
I was DEEP in the Mopar world back in the mid 80's, but I see A LOT has changed since then.
Is there a way to get a detailed build sheet on this? I would LOVE to go the same direction. (But, with a frame connector, and a standard 8 3/4 axle, with a locker in it)
Hope to hear from you, (or the owner) soon!
What an awesome car! Sounds mental! You demonstrate that the brakes are excellent. So, no issues with vacuum for the booster considering the 231/239/110 cam?
My first car was a '65 Barracuda, but not like this one. Mine had the 273 2-barrel and automatic with open differential, 7.00x13 tires on 4.5" wheels, no swaybars, and tiny drum brakes all round. It still couldn't spin even one tire, the body lean through turns was alarming, and the brake fade was positively life-threatening - ask me how I know. But a ton of fun and cool factor for a first car.
Yeah this thing just sounds like it wants to eat your head. Zero problems with brake vacuum - the booster works perfectly. I have not yet seen an engine that, when timed properly with a modified advance curve, didn’t make enough vacuum at idle for the booster to work. The tiny drums and lack of front sway bar are definitely not ideal. The wee tires could be related too. And I have to wonder about your old 273 - I’ve seen them do some pretty impressive tire shredding. But funny enough I made a video today about how these cars can be quite fun without all this extra expense, using my Demon as exhibit A. Look for that tomorrow. Haha.
Roller cams tend to see a bit more vacuum compared to flat tappet if you are just comparing numbers. I was pleasantly surprised I could run power brakes. I have a complete manual setup for the car as well
Nice lil stick of dynamite!
Are those Moon eyes Gage's? I want that car . Black powder coat the wheels and tint the windows PERFECTION....
Just the tach, but how sweet is that? Yeah… it’s an amazing car. I love it.
Awesome video ! I have a 65 Valiant station wagon that I want to be pretty similar. Always debating the 5 speed or automatic overdrive.
If it’s a “daily” cruiser, I’m all about an automatic these days. If it’s a go fast, screw around, stoplight action street destroyer… it’s gotta be the stick. People have reminded me that my Demon would be faster on the strip with an automatic, and that I ditch the four speed. Haha… no. But in my ‘68, I would never take the automatic out. That’s the character of the car. It’s all about what you want it to be.
My buddy had nothing but problems with that Holley sniper he played with it for 3 years doff everything everyone said to do no one could get it to run mint he went to carb and problem solved
It seems to be hit or miss. I’ve had some not so great times dealing with the Sniper systems. But I’ve got this one running pretty damn well. If it doesn’t want to behave a carb can go right back on.
I have a 1965 barracuda with a 7.2 440 mopar with 3 speed slap stick auto thing burns em down the street no problem be koo for you to check my work out to see what other tune I need has custom headers down the wheel walls and all the Interior is an eight out of ten
I'm not a big fan of those 1st gen cudas, but I like that one. 👍
Front calipers on wrong. The bleeders should be on the top. Switch left one to the right side so the bleeders are on top.
The front calipers have bleeders at both ends 🙂 because Wilwood
That is one not so Sweet, SWEET Cuda!
Its as mad as a box of Frogs - in a good way
That engine sounds mean!
That thing is f'n awesome. Not in love with the wheels/tires combo though. It looks off somehow. And what is that thing 3400 lbs or something with a full tank and 180 lb driver? Insane. Wonder what it would run on the track. Nice vid.
Dude it’s probably less than that… now that I think about it, I’ve got a set of scales here and could find out. I’m not too surprised that the wheels aren’t everybody’s favorite. I like them, but they wouldn’t have been my first choice. The black stepside had the same wheels and I felt the same way there.
Too many choices. Once I get the rear wheel openings figured out, it'll end up with black steelies on the rear with meats
@@Littlehotrodshop Polished Torque Thrusts always look great, but I love how your wheels look now.
Nice seeing this awesome 1965 'Cuda...
This reminds me of a '65 Plymouth Valiant I once owned.
There are some similar/matched body lines between the two car models.
The rear tail lamps and reverse lamps are interchangable or pretty much the same, best I recall.
My '65 had the inline six three on the tree manual tranny.
Edit: p.s. I should have mentioned how reliable that Valiant was back in the late 1970's and early eighties when I was young and broke, paycheck to paycheck. I did finally pass the Valiant off to a friend that had the time and a bit more money to keep 'Val' daily driving on the highways of my old stomping grounds in the San Francisco Bay Area.
That’s awesome. Yep, the Barracuda is just a fast back Valiant, so although the roof, grille and other small things are different, the body lines and lower sheet metal are shared between the two cars. Lots and lots of similarities.
I like, what looks like. a 1960 Studebaker Hawk parked next to the lift. Is it a work in progress? Is that a 289 4 speed. Or have you changed the engine.
‘61 - and yes, it’s a freshly rebuilt 289 that now has a TKO five speed behind it. It’s been a five year project that is nearing completion. I have done one video on it, and will be posting a follow up once it’s finally running again. It’s also wearing an Avanti type supercharger setup…
that is my car!
Wait… it’s not tho
I'll stick with my double pumper & regular electronic ignition, thank you. 😁Are those Doug's or TTI headers?
Good with me! I’ve had some bad times with the Sniper systems myself. But this dang thing sure runs amazingly well…
@@DeadDodgeGarage added another question after you replied, those Doug's or TTI headers?
Dougs
i love the barracuda too!!!! 69 my fav. do your can cudo bro
Dead Dodge Garage featuring a Plymouth Barracuda ? Yup. Smart
So… are you sarcastically saying I’m unintelligent because I showed a car that isn’t a Dodge on my channel? Or is this not sarcasm and you actually think it’s smart? There have been two Plymouths and a Chrysler on the channel in the last week, as well as a video that really wasn’t about Chrysler products at all 🙃 you know I’ve even done videos on Fords?! 🤯
Snipers are such a pain in the ass. Nice car though.
It runs great... and O2 sensors die regularly
Is the steering too quick? I've got a borgeson with standard pitman. Mine seems quick enough. Borgeson recommends a stock pitman with their Mopar box
It doesn’t feel too quick or jumpy to me - just very responsive. That’s interesting. I will pass that on to Mitchell. I mostly think we should put a standard arm on so the linkage sits right. I’m worried steering angle through curves and over bounces will do weird things as it is - but admittedly, it felt really good on the road.
Not a quick ratio arm. It may have something to do with the borgeson box. I'll tackle that issue down the road
If you had built this car, and it was a factory automatic but had no motor or trans, after driving this one, would you build it with the 5 speed or an automatic with overdrive ?
These things are best as snarling monsters to me. That’s what my ‘66 is too. They’ve gotta have the three pedals… 🙂 but see my response to your other comment for my full thoughts on this.
I hear geese when you turn
The interesting thing was that it was easy to hear in the audio, but not at all audible in person. I almost inserted an editor’s note about that in the video but decided against it. I still don’t know what that was.
@DeadDodgeGarage
Twas geese I say! LOL
can confirm, not great to put gas in this car - I always carry a funnel, but fuel comes out so fast in most cases it's an utter disaster
Also a topic I want to talk about tonight. It's very barracuda related. When did they drop the name barracuda to cuda and why? But that's for tonight.
I can answer that, kinda 🙂
I don't think that they ever dropped it. The Cuda, was a sub model or trim option of a Barracuda. The Barracuda was the base model name, all this started in 1970.
@@davidkeeton6716 Yep. The 'Cuda was a performance package in '69, and then from '70-'74 the Barracuda and 'Cuda had different VINs and were essentially separate - although in all of the ways that matter, they are still the same car. We did end up talking about this on the last live stream. Haha.
In 1970 when they changed body styles
