  • This video shows how i carry out floor to chair transfers with a twist on the technique that was taught to me in rehab, and is perhaps a little out of the ordinary, but works really well for me.
Floor to chair transfers, in my opinion, are a great skill to learn as it enables you to get out of the chair and sit on the ground to enjoy a picnic, lay down in the sun, do exercises and stretching, and of course have the confidence to get back into the wheelchair after a fall (lets face it... it happens!)
I hope you find my videos useful? If so, give them a LIKE, and subscribe for more. I make these videos purely to help and inspire others in a similar situation, and to show what can be achieved with some practice.
Please feel free to leave any comments, and suggest new ideas for further videos. I'll do my best to respond quickly.

Hi came across your videos. Trying to improve my transfer skills even though I have been T2 for 40 years( had accident when 2, also didn't wear my brace much). Always found transfers to low surfaces and floors troubling to do. So, I gave up. But, now I think I should have worked at it a bit more. Thanks for doing the videos, they are a great source of learning.

Hi, thanks for your kind comment. Its great to hear my videos are proving useful even for long-time injured people. I hope you get chance to try the floor to chair transfers sometime as it's such a great thing to be able to do and allows more freedom to get out of the chair

Hi my son is t4-9 complete. We never got to learn any transfers due to the COVID-19 we were sent home. He had a wreak dec 6th 2019 coming home from school. I plan on working with him today on the floor transfer. We are still unable to go to any gyms or to therapy yet. So i have started watching others to try an help him. Thank you for showing how to!

Hi, I’m sorry to hear you haven’t had the chance for proper rehab. I learned most of my skills via TH-cam and continual practice. Just keep at it, and I’d happily offer any advice I can - drop me an email to the address in the video description if I can help further. Sam

Same here - had to have a strap around my knees. It makes it slightly easier but having tried the rehab-taught method again recently I found it a total pain to set my legs up

You make it look so easy. Do you have problems with spasms? If so, how do you deal with it especially when transferring.

Thanks! It’s just lots of practise:) I’m strange and haven’t ever suffered from spasms so can’t really comment on them

Thank you for sharing this. This method is definitely the most effective for me, but sometimes my outside leg (the one not resting against the wheelchair) sort of pulls my other leg and the rest of my body back down. Has this ever happened to you? If so, how do you combat it?

Yes I get that. To reduce that effect, try to get your head further over your ‘other’ leg (the one against the wheelchair). It seems counter-intuitive, but the more you force your head down/forward, the more your bum pops up. Try also pulling your outside leg back towards you even more so it has less sliding to do
