I love Chicago but Terry Kath was the beast that kept them relevant with their style of music. Most underrated guitar player ever. Wished he he lived longer and got straight to make his solo album we all dream of

There is no help if you are not committed. Then you did it on your own. Terry Kath was amazing. His whole notes were quarter notes. Speed and eloquence not seen since. RIP good man.
I watch terry Kath here and I'm blown away. The thought sets in, that he had less than a year to live. So dearly missed.
Yeah, but it could have been prevented if he had stopped screwing around with the drugs and drink. If he had just gotten some help, he'd still be here making music.
Yeah, but 9.9 outta 10 are never gonna seek help. Its just the nature of addiction. Usually a person has to hit rock bottom before they seriously consider reaching out for help. By all accounts, while Terry knew he had a problem, he wasn't close to givin' up his crutches.
groundhog713 ,, playing around with guns after not sleeping 3 nights didn't help. Again the drugs but where were the band members or Danny Seraphine his closest friend in the band the drummer,, or any of his friends? it just seems like somebody might have lended a hand and took care of Terry Kath from being up for 3 nights ask him why he would be cleaning his gun at 3 in the morning or something anything obviously he needed some help.
Scott Loveday He was up 3 days? That's crazy just doing tons of cocaine I'm sure. I think of that also, nobody said anything that he was putting guns to his head, pulling the triggers? He had already done it once. I imagine the other people there were as high as him, and getting rid of stuff before the police showed up. They had to deal with this in that mindframe, I picture it as a real nightmare scene...
He accidentally shot himself by living the life he led as a hopeless routine
BTW-Everyone talks about the great loss of Terry Kath, and rightly so, but give it up for my man Danny Seraphine on the drums. As much soul as Kath played with on the guitar, so goes for Danny on the drums. He's the one who dreamed up those drum parts. His drumming sketces became as much a part of the song as the vocals or melody lines. I wish they hadn't had the differences of opinion that led to his leaving the band.
Kath was a fucking wonder, but finally, a voice for Danny. One of the greats. True innovator.
I've always felt that Danny's playing was the "beating heart" of Chicago. That could be said about any great drummer but he really was an amazing guy to watch play. The utter joy. I also felt that Terry was the soul of the band (which is why it died for me after he actually died) and no question that Lamm was the "brain," the architect behind their success in the late60s/70s. He wrote so much of their music, whole albums on his back. It's no wonder his songwriting burned out. I used to think that was awful, that they should've spread it out and not have done all those double albums, but Terry was a shooting star not long for this world and it's fitting that he got to play on Lamm's best work. For me, these three are the core of the band, not to not Cetera, which is a common thing to do nowadays. I too dislike their Cetera-centric stuff and never listen to it but his contributions, his bass playing and lead vocals/harmonies can't be denied. The horn/woodwind work is just the icing on the cake. Trying to imagine Chicago as just a 4 piece w/o the horns is like, pointless, folks.
Wayne Dent he doesn't even know why they threw him put, which is a shitty thing to do, particularly to a FOUNDING MEMBER.

Correction: he told me personally they booted him out, then wouldn't tell him WHY. :) Seems like a real nice guy, I can't imagine he deserved it.
Yeah, he had great rhythm, this band has some songs with tempo changes, that's for for sure, especially the early music.
no one records music like this anymore; not in rock or in jazz, just a unique group of talent and creativity.
Wow! Now I remember why Chicago was a great band! Terry Kath was a one man wrecking crew. What a shame we lost him so young. Great concert. Great video for that era.

I saw Chicago in 1973. At lake Spivey Henry county Georgia..along with grand funk railroad they were great I was. 19 years old seems like yesterday. I will all ways miss Terry Kath the soul of the band ..Rest in peace...

Terry Kath should be spoken of when great guitarists and musicians of this generation are mentioned. His voice is often overlooked, he sounded like a white Ray Charles. And that's high praise!
Thanks for this. I never got to see them live, but this is a pretty good substitute. My enthusiasm for Chicago went down when Terry Kath died, and it annoys me that he is not recognised among the great guitarists.
You know that it is confirmed that when Jimi Hendrix was asked: How is it being the most guitar player in the world? He answered: Don’t ask me. Ask Terry Kath!….so even if only some connoisseurs know him, Jimi said it…and even Fender released a replica of his Tele. …

Lucky I got to see this tour when it was at Alpine valley in WI so I got to see my idle that made me pick up the guitar I will think god to this day that I got to see Terry
I was also at that Alpine Valley show. Never would have dreamed it was the only chance I had to see Terry play.

New definition of apprehension: getting "Beginnings" flung at you by the guitar player, knowing Danny is a WAY better drummer than you.
Chicago has, through the years, hired some very talented players to replace the originals. I saw them before they were the commercial phenom they became, and I saw them in between then and now, and for my money, you cannot beat them in this, their first decade of playing to a world wide audience. The first three albums were revolutionary.
The real Chicago died with Terry. The soft rock band isn't my Chicago.

"Searching So Long" is clearly the best of the show. I have only realized recently what a great song this is.
i saw them live twice,the first time they came our stupid the arena was empty, the band called everybody to the front and and gave a hellof a show. A yer later it was hard to get a ticket...

How is it that Jimi Hendrix, whom the vast majority of both musicians and music fans consider to be the greatest guitar player ever, at one time referred to another guitarist as being greater than even he was, and yet that same guitarist is still continually shunned to this very day by nearly every poll/list of the greatest guitarists of all time?
That guitarist of course is Mr. Terry Kath.

l bet Stevie Ray Vaughn was a big fan of Terry.... Hell, Terry was the first Stevie Ray Vaughn, at least before him. Terry was the whitest, blackman playing that guitar on Uptown! Damn! Now l understand y Hendrix was a huge fan...Terry had soul! Damn!
Terry Kath and Stevie Ray Vaughan were as good as it gets, next to Jimi. The Holy Trinity. If there were a guitarists' Mt. Rushmore, and all three would be on it - with Les Paul rounding out the quartet!
I bet SRV, Terry and Jimi are all jammin' together somewhere.

Lyrically Scrapbook reminds me of Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple. Both songs are about life in a band, playing live etc. and both songs mention Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.
If I ever have unlimited space and money, I'll put one of those insanely heavy Rhodes electric pianos on my list...i never met Terry Kath, but I've known the band in passing since I was a kid. Nice guys.

These guys always reminded me of Little Feat and Tower of Power with a touch of Weather Report.. Couldn't get enough of Chicago growing up. This was about as good as Chicago gets, talented band but after Terry's death that was it.
The wind in their sale was gone IMO.
Amazing thing is Terry is driving the band but driving all this with a transistor amp..

Although this music is loaded w horns, but guitar takes an egual or a lead part sometimes. Nice blend. I like Chicago w Terry and Cetera. And the drummer is pretty good.

I think that was Danny...putting him in his place they were on coke binges back then, I think brass went heavy. I remember Lee saying in BTM on VH1 that he could barely stand still onstage at that point.

Im pretty sure it was Terry. Danny said in an interview Terry called the shots on stage and after he tells Pankow to shut up he counts in the song. That was my take on it.

Drummers don't see ballads as being interesting. We got bored AF. So it's unlikely you'll see any drummer going on about "If you leave me now."
I can understand the difference of opinion, although I like the changes in it.
