You guys are just old farts & fossils... 😉👍🏻
And... I'm proud to be one of you!
      I'm 55 and when I was 7 or 8 , I discovered the Great Chicago.
That Christmas my folks got me the CTA double album and an older (non-working) Garrard turntable.
I had spent the year building a Heathkit amplifier (mono!) and had dug up an old pair of speakers that functioned but needed some loving care to restore the damaged wood cabinets.
Their goal (& mine 😎) was to repair the turntable and get down to the fun part... Listening!
It took me just a week or two.
Nowadays there is "Autotune" which makes everything and everyone --> THE SAME!
Oh well, A great trip down memory lane.
Btw: As a teen, hearing of Terry Kath's death, I became fervently anti-gun. I was living in NJ, so that was the norm anyway.
Thank God, I grew up and discovered the CONSTITUTION! I became a cop and volunteer firefighter/emt and am now an NRA firearms safety instructor. Lesson -- DRUGS & GUNS DON'T MIX!
Rip Mr. Kath. Thanks for the memories and outstanding music.

Terry Kath was a BADASS on the guitar, its a shame he's not ranked amongst the 100 all-time greats, when you get a complement from someone like Jimi Hendrix, you know where you belong, Terry Kath was one of rock's greatest guitarists who never got his due during his lifetime.

You know what blows my mind about Terry Kath? On the song "Beginnings," This guy, Terry likely says, to himself, this song is so F-ing great, I don't need to overplay on it. That was what blew my mind about early Chicago. Kath could have been one of the most 5 famous guitarists ever on talent alone. But, he was for the band first. And dominated singing, songwriting, and guitar playing.

Watch the new documentary by his daughter! (On TH-cam for around $5 bucks or so.. )
It was great! But drugs really do suck... they took so much talent to an early grave.
With Terry it was stupid handling of one of those evil handguns that led to his demise.

Even though the camera work is kind of rough on the eyes this footage is priceless. This IS Chicago. Unfettered by AOR hell.
There are some mistakes but the performance is good. The sound quality at times is pretty bad. But these guys were so good that the footage remains enjoyable. Gloriously live, unfiltered, raw, powerful. They were more edgy than many would know.
Kath really shines in Dialogue and Richard. He gave that Strat a good workout. Some of those fast, tight bluesy riffs had me thinking about SRV's smoking solos. Long live Terry Kath. As Joe Walsh said, he gave Chicago that 'rub' which made them such an exciting band, especially live. Insane playing by Terry in 25 or 6 to 4. A studio Les Paul was an interesting choice to play in live performances.

Terry versus Jimmy = Match nul

    • @lawrencearansaspasstx4374
      @lawrencearansaspasstx4374 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was a VERY HIGH RANKED compliment, considering that Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Robin Trower and a few other TRULY OUTSTANDING guitar masters were around when Jimi made that statement. Or he could have said, "Damn! He is almost as good as me, but I don't think, that as long as he's playing THAT kind of music, that I have anything to get up about. Ha, ha, ha."( The kind of back handed 'compliment' that you can get in 2019.) Jimi Hendrix seemed to be the type of artist who really checked out the guitarists who could play their own style of Rock music. I was about 13 when Hendrix died and I remember, before that, if anyone remembers, EVERYBODY who played guitar, was trying to be like Hendrix and play like him. Jimi probably got REALLY sick of that and maybe that's why Terry Kath got the nod . I was able to witness why in '73, when Chicago played the Pan American Center in Las Cruces NM. I was just getting started on going to concerts and a friend's big brother had the album, "Chicago- Live At Carnegie Hall"" and when I heard those vinyl platters, I was really amazed. I was listening to stuff like The Stooges, Alice Cooper, Black Oak Arkansas, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. I had only heard Chicago on Top 40 AM. But hearing that Carnegie Hall gig made me think differently. Anyway, big brother says I'm going, Mike sez Yeah, me too. Big brother says Are YOU going? I sez Can I catch a ride? Big brother says Oh yeah. You and Mike can take turns carrying each other the 70mils to Las Cruces. No punks allowed, assholes! I always thought that he was cool until that day and I never forgot it. BUT guess WHO ended up going and who DIDN'T? I have been to many concerts in the years since, got to watch Blackfoot do their set at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin with Handsome Dick Manitoba, singer for the Dictators who opened for Blackfoot, sitting with us, I got to meet and rap a little while with Tony Stevens and Roger Earl of Foghat in Corpus Christi, but that Chicago concert was really fine, because of Terry Kath's playing and that it was a Rock concert, but done in a professional manner. I was getting a GOOD contact high, but me, a punk asshole, could see that Terry Kath was the axis of Chicago. Of course, the only other concert I had been to was Black Oak Arkansas, but after seeing Terry Kath, I had a better idea of why the two Black Oak guitarists smashed their guitars above Jim Dandy Magnum's head, as the guitarist's climax!(And I STILL love Black Oak Arkansas' Raunch and Roll Live album!) When Terry died I was bummed out for a long time, the stupid way he died was a waste of a true artist, but I found it soothing to at least know that I, a punk asshole, had heard and seen, the GUITARIST who Jimi Hendrix said was a better guitar master than himself. When Kath died, so did the band's greatest time period of brilliance and being on top as a GREAT band with the GREAT guitarist who took them there.

    • @nickf9392
      @nickf9392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Why is it so hard for some people to accept what Jimi said about Terry, I personally dont understand it. You weren't there, and they were! Chicago didn't play to the critics, Rollin Stone, or the Rock Hall, and because they didn't kiss their ass, they were left off of the lists of so called greats as defined by the establishment at the time. Jimi and Terry were equally talented, with just different enough of styles to make them both very unique.

Let's just say they weren't the same after Terry left the band. Basically there were two versions of Chicago... One with Terry Kath, and one without Terry Kath. they were the first band I've ever seen live and that was in 1975 and my God, they we're so good, and so loud. Danny seraphine stole the show that night, he played his ass off and couple that with my father, Buddy Rich, and Ronnie Tutt, with Elvis, and Danny seraphine cinched the deal that I would become a professional Drummer. I mean, when you see the nerds out in the audience all air drumming you know the drummer is killing it. the only other time I saw that was when Gary Novak played the Chick Corea at the maintenance shop in Ames Iowa.

Hey everybody, I was just thinking about the fact that I can hardly click on a Chicago song or video on here without reading a comment from someone saying something to the effect about it being a shame that Peter Cetera was an egomaniac. I can't think of many bands of Chicago's stature that didn't have at least one bigheaded member. All of the things that I've read about him may be true, I don't know, but what I do know is that he was/is a great singer and bassist and that without him I don't believe that this great band would have been nearly as great as they were/are! I was in heaven, knowing that for one night they were performing right in front of me! I got to see them two more times before Kath died. I cried the day I heard the news about him. But, what a legacy they’ve left us. So glad I was able to grow up during their time here on earth.

This is just amazing. One of the greatest musical performances ever. Every concert they added so many new improvisations. Danny on the drums drives the whole concert with such flair and rhythm. So glad this was captured on film. Amazing

This is by far the best version of Chicago's concert at Japan in 1972 in terms of video and most especially audio.

American bands always do so much better overseas, especially, it seems, in Japan. *CHICAGO* is no exception!
Right from the start, we have a *Kath* tune ("Introduction") where we hear, see, smell, taste, feel this aMAZEing group of guys on stage!
When *Lamm's* "Beginnings" begins, we have, before us, *Terry's* sweet guitar, *Danny's* smooth yet powerful drumming, *Robert/Bobby's* no-miss jazzy keyboards, and that so friggin' well-oiled *Horn-Machine,* with just 3 dudes, mind you, pumpin' out together-sounds that make New Orleans piss its pants! ( *Walter* .....good God!!)

I never realized how good Terry Kath was, on a level with Jimi Hendrix. Maybe he was less about his ego and more about his band and went unoticed.

Chris Choir- Let's not let rudeness prevail. Interestingly, Jimi (obviously blown away at the time) is quoted as telling Chicago Transit Authority sax player Walt Parazaider, "Walt, the Horns are like one set of lungs, and your guitar player is better than me!". And true, offstage, Jimi was as humble as Terry, but he knew what anyone who gives a damn about music knows; No one musician is truly better than any other when giving their all. It's simply a matter of preference/opinion. It's well known that Jimi considered christian rock, acoustic guitarist Phil Keaggy, better than himself. Personally, I think he sucks! But once again, that's just my opinion.. and Terry Rocks! Smiles

I'm better than Hendrix. Last week, I think I figured out how to play a G chord.

You are right! He was on a level higher that Jimi. No disrespect to Jimi and Terry may be the only one better but you need to do some more research and see more of his playing. He could play pretty much anything Jimi could but I don't think Jimi new all of Terry's tricks and sounds and they came on the scene at pretty much the same time. Jimi was a better showman for sure.

@@chrischoir3594 5 best singing blues/rock guitarists ever (not in order of quality; they're ALL kick-ass): Lonnie Mack, Roy Buchanan, Johnny Winter, Kath, Hendrix. Buddy Guy in top 10.

Never saw Terry play a LP before. He was definitely the leader of Chicago. I remember the day I heard of his death. I was in the kitchen and heard it on my transistor radio. I was just a young teen but it was a complete kick in the gut to me. I couldn't wrap my head around his death at the time.

He is the greatest musician… I was lucking to experience In Pittsburgh PA in 1976 live, I will never forget that experience and the way he carried the performance for Chicago. On top of that, thanks to Michael I fell that every day his spirit and soul continues with me. His artistry has certainly influenced how I view the world and the man I strive to be.
