White 4-225 plowing with 10 bottom Oliver plow. CAT V8 Turbo Power!

  • I recorded this in September of 2019, but thought I'd save it for a winter day when we are all dreaming of getting in the fields. The tractor is my 1983 White 4-225 and it is pulling a 5 bottom Oliver 460 flex back plow with a 5 bottom Oliver 548 plow behind it, for a total of ten 16 inch bottoms. This was my first time trying out this setup, and it went really well, especially after some adjustments. This tractor still has its factory CAT turbochared 3208 V8 diesel engine.

    Chisel plowing is great, but there is something extra rewarding about leaving a field after you’ve finished molboard plowing it.

The 770 did all the big jobs like plowing, discing, pulling the drag, planting with the drill, and running the pull behind combine or corn picker. I sure miss that tractor and farming with it. looked to me like everything paired up well where the 2 plows was you could see no differences and seemed like the tractor was having no trouble handling the plows thanks for the video also glad to see the rebuild on the other tractor going well with parts this is idea for the pre heater that likely failed and caused the engine failure what about doing a delete on it with the higher compression from the new piston sleeves piston combo just have a block heater on it and plug it in the night before you want to use it not sure the tractor may even all ready have a block heater on it now but still that pre heater doing that is not good at all

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm thinking about deleting the preheater. It does have a block heater, but it's nice to have the preheater if I need it unexpectedly, or I leave it in the field overnight. From what I'm hearing, the high compression pistons start unaided down into the teens.

    Big snake back there going down the road. Pulled it good. Did u guys ever sell bigger plows like that

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the guys around here got up to 6-8 bottoms before they quit mold boarding. I've got to think we sold at least one of these flex back plows, because there is a parts book for it in with the other plows parts books the dealership had. We only kept parts books for stuff we sold, and had micro fiche for everything else, so the book makes me think they sold at least one. I've been asking around to some of the guys that might have bought one without any luck so far. Ever since I saw that parts book, I've thought that would be a neat plow to have, so when this one popped up on the internet, I didn't waste any time in buying it. The front plow could be either a 4 or a 5 bottom unit, and they recommended using a 565 or 575 plow for the second unit. I'd say the one I have might have only been used as a 5 bottom. The hitch was set up for 5, and the rear hitch had zero wear on it. The whole thing had very little wear on it, I just had to replace tires and repack wheel bearings and it was ready to go.

      I wasn't sure it was going to pull 10 as good as it did, but it could do 11 after running this one, maybe 12. We've got an 8 bottom 588 plow and Dad felt that was plenty, but it was also set on an 18 inch cut, which is only 16 inches narrower than this plow with 10 16s.

    Excellent video. I noticed that your 3 point arms are all the way up. We ran 1750 through 2150 olivers on our farm. Did they do away with that design that would burn up the hydraulic pump if you did that?

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the three point arms are loading the hydraulic pump from being all the way up, they are out of adjustment. I leave mine up all the time, except when I'm using them.

      Have you ever considered setting up an Oliver/White help desk?

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess I kind of considered my youtube channel a help desk of sorts. I know a lot of people want personalized attention to their problem, but that could be a full time job itself.

    Does your machine have a pyrometer?? I worked for a guy who had a Steiger Bearcat with a 3208 with a tune job on it, and he had to watch his exhaust temps pretty close!!

      Yes. They pull nice and on my ground, the spring reset is a must. That is one of my favorite plows to use of all the ones we have.

    So how many acres could you plough there on a good average day? You are leaving a good level job, a little bit of trash showing up but it’s acceptable
    Thanks for the video ☘️

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say it could do around 50 acres a day with a 10 hour work day. If you watch the main area that is leaving trash is where the tractor is straddling, leaving standing stubble for the rear 2 bottoms of the front plow. The front plow came from South Dakota and has what Oliver called their stubble bottom, as well as straight coulters and no coverboards. The idea was to leave a little residue on top to prevent erosion. The rear plow has dished coulters and Oliver's general purpose bottoms. It does a nice job of burying residue.

    Just wondering why no coverboards on your plows always does a cleaner job of burying the trash

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rear plow has dished coulters, which eliminate the need for cover boards. The front plow has stubble bottoms, which were designed to leave some stubble on top to help with erosion.
