Most of the lag you're seeing is from your camera, not the monitor. Blue Only is meant for a couple of things: making sure that the hues from a video source are correct (set one to output SMPTE color bars, then make sure that colors are consistent from top to bottom), and to check noise levels. Both camera sensors and our eyes are far less sensitive to blue light than other colors, so you'll see more noise in the blue channel than you will the others. Having the Blue Only mode lets you check to see if your noise levels are in check.
I have the Atomos Ninja Inferno. Its user manual states that the Blue Only mode is for inspecting the sensor noise, as the blue channel tends to be the noisiest.
The thing that's crazy to me is that blackmagic puts HDR in the name of the device, but to my knoweldge there is no way to view raw video in HDR in real time, despite having an amazing HDR display. That defeats a huge advantage to the monitor. Whereas the Ninja V has an inferior dispay (1000 nits vs 2500 nits), but sensibly has a PQ preview of their raw video. I find it to be such a bizarre oversight. It really sucks only being able to view HDR when shooting HLG in real time, given raw is the superior mode.
I have a 7in on the 6k and it’s still there. It’ll be corrected in a software update. Black magic will be releasing a lot of fixes for this soon and hopefully introducing camera control for their cameras (to control basic exposure settings) BRAW still isn’t event available on this yet!
DCI-P3 color gambit was created by the film studios almost 20 years ago when theaters were being converted to digital projection. DCI-P3 color is the color standard for DCPs.
Appreciate the hard work you put into these reviews. I just received mine as well and love it! Do you know if the 12v power on the side charges the NP-F570 batteries while plugged in? On another note, hoping BRAW comes to 1080 soon, so the files from HDMI feed (BMPCC) can be smaller.

Great review as always! I'm currently running a Ninja V robbed from my other camera and really need a dedicated monitor for the 4K. I've been leaning towards the Portkeys BM5, however this monitor looks very compelling. My question to you is, as a one man band for the most part, the latency of this model seems like using it to pull focus in any kind of quick moving scene would be brutal. I almost feel like that makes it a deal breaker, especially since I don't need the recording capability. What are your thoughts?
JSW Photography Yeah i mean that is a concern if you’re running on gimbals a lot. I only use the Devin Graham Glidecam, and i dont even pull focus with that, i just set the lens to a 4 or a 5.6 and try my best to maintain the same distance. But i rarely do gimbal stuff, im just not a fan, and i really only do narrative work, which doesnt require a whole lot of gimbal stuff, i prefer what i can do with my Ready Rig. Thank you for posting! How do you like using it (or do you) with your BMPCC4K or 6K as a PQ monitor? I use my older Atomos Ninja V in PQ monitoring with a similar LUT built in (no BM available for Ninja) that ball parks me for color how I might grade along with my waveform etc so I know how far I’m pushing the sensor. I expect the BM scopes to be more accurate with a BM camera in BRAW? True/False? Or are they fairly standard signal processing? Anyway I was thinking of getting a Atomos Shinobi for my BMPCC4K since I don’t need any recording features and keep my Ninja V on another camera, unless you think the PQ monitoring bright/peaks/shadows retention tone mapping on the 12 Video assist is vastly better?
Hi Justin. Great run down there. I recently received my new 12g 7" video assist. Running out of my Lumix S1H,(1080 25p) on a 8K short HDMI cable, I immediately noticed delay in signal. This is a concern as pans and focus pulls are that much harder now. I see in your review the same lag as you pan the camera, the VA is not in sync.. Do you think this is a HDMI thing? Over BNC on ALL other monitors I use I have never seen a lag like this.. Any advice will be MOST WELCOME.
lighthackerslimited I think it’s a lot to do with the camera body. Some cameras affect lag more than others. Which is still a bummer. I’m gonna be doing a follow up and testing the lag on my BlackMagic

hmmm….im not sure, probably not. I havent noticed that feature. I see what you mean tho, could be a cool feature. But the amount of space you can get on these little cards is pretty dang good, and the 7 inch has dual slots. Thats what i use now, the bigger one. It also has full size SDI and mini xlr ports. I use it with my vaxis unit for my 1st AC monitor 🤙🏼
The gh4 ( My first three camera's) is primarily a 4k 8 bit camera with a 10 bit output. This recorder is capable of 10 bit raw. These are being used in talk shows. Does this effect the dynamic range in any way? ( Two for $400, good timing) I would expect a more vibrant and workable file from this recorder. This it appears you agree? I am fortunate enough to have a Gh5 and Bmpcc 4k also. I went with Feelworld 7" 2200 nit monitors for these. Does the BlackMagic video assist here help in matching the Bmpcc 4k with the Gh5? Thanks for all the insight. Ray
it could help for sure, if on the Pocket 4K you are shooting with their extended video LUT, and then shooting on the GH5 in Vlog, and sending that out to the HDR Video Assist, because it has the same LUTs on it that the Pocket 4K has. still would need some tweaking in Resolve obviously, but yeah, that could help getting closer for sure.
@@JustinPhillip Since you mentioned age I will give a hint here. ... So would you agree it is time invest in the Vlog as a long term approach. My experience has been to use the Gh5 as a wide camera with two Gh4's crossing medium to close. I am using the Lumix 12-35 and a pair of 35 -100 for lenses. If I hit the lotto today there would be three ursa g2's and three S1h's on order. Justin I have some old DVCAM and HDV tapes I want to digitize and use this device. Do you see any issues with that? Both players have 3G/SDI (SD/HD) output. I also have the option of converting both SDI source feeds to HDMI through the BM SD->HDMI bi-directional convertor (probably not needed).
What about the latency Justin? I would like to buy it to have BRAW but I observed latency with this monitor recorder on several videos which is too dangerous for focus pulling. Thanks for your reply :)
hmm....my 1st AC still uses this monitor when pulling focus for me. I haven't noticed any extreme issues with it, but we use SDI. So maybe there is more latency issues with HDMI or even with the wireless receiver you're using. We havent noticed anything concerning. I replaced the 5" with the 7" tho sometime ago....not sure if the 7" is better in terms of latency...the reason why i got rid of the 5" is because the mini SDI broke
@@JustinPhillipThank you Justin! I saw more people has 4 or 5 frames of latency with the 7inch version (because of the xlr ports). We can also see it during conventions. They reduced the latency without using the xlr. I never find someone who used these two monitors to record BRAW and that's what I want to do. I guess the only thing I need to do is to buy it and try. Thank you very much for your reply🙏
I received the BMVA 5' and I have no latency, even in BRAW 6K and very nice HDR colors. I am so happy, thank you for your reply ;) It has already frozen several times but maybe it's because I send the HDM signal to the BMVA and then from the BMVA to a SmallHD 702 touch. The guy at Blackmagic told me it will be impossible to have a second monitor and that I will have a black screen. He was wrong I can, but I think it could block the BMVA... I hope it is the only reason. And finally, i understand why your's broke, the mini SDI are very bad and waaay too long...

Is it possible to record 6K/4K(BMPCC) in camera and another lower format inside the monitor simultaneously (for proxies reasons)? And also can you control your camera settings from the monitor, iso etc?
Spiros Petropoulos Yes you can record in lower format, whatever you choose on monitor, and some cameras you can downrez. But no, as of right now, you can not change camera settings from the monitor
Can I have it being used via HDMI in and have it loop out VIA the SDI out? Or does it only work with the input you are using? I am wanting to use the HDMI input but want to loop out via the SDI output.
P3 is a colour gamut. It just specifies the breadth of unique colours within a defined standard. Why it's an industry standard - you kind of explained but it's not tech, so much as it's a specification. You can grade in srgb, rec709, P3 and more on the same computer/monitor. Because it's a wide colour gamut, companies are keen to say that their product's displays are P3. It's a marketing thing. Most of the time, they're displaying a % of P3, not actually displaying 100% of the colours (but probably all of 709 for instance). Edit: in short, it is data :)
I tried using the Video Assist 12G to record HDMI output from a GH5 in HLG 10-bit 422 MOV mode, into DNxHR HQX format MOV files. MediaInfo says the files are recorded in BT.2020 color space, but with Transfer Characteristics: Rec. 709. When I play back the MOV files with the Video Assist HDMI output plugged directly into a Samsung Q70R, the HDTV fails to switch into HDR mode. I have successfully played back internally recorded HLG MOV files from the GH5, which automatically switch the Q70R into HDR mode. Does anyone know if the Video Assist 12G can record HLG format DNxHR MOV files with the correct HLG metadata?

Great video !
Would this work as an HDR grading monitor as an output to Davinci 17?
it can! its fairly small for something like that. but definitely doable for portable workstation
Anyway I was thinking of getting a Atomos Shinobi for my BMPCC4K since I don’t need any recording features and keep my Ninja V on another camera, unless you think the PQ monitoring bright/peaks/shadows retention tone mapping on the 12 Video assist is vastly better?
atomos are okay monitors, but i much prefer the HDR video assist over any other monitors
Do you find using batteries more convenient than 12V power delivery from somewhere else, say, larger battery for example?
I use a dummy battery to p-tap, amzn.to/3pJoVbg
Did the new update fix some of the issues you may have had with this monitor
hoodaffairstv just put that video out. But i wasnt having any software issues to begin with
Hola para este monitor que tipo de memorias recomiendas, con que características?
Hi, is it better than Atomos for Sony A7 III?
@@JustinPhillip I just saw another post with a different camera.. same issue too.
I am thinking it's the monitor instead of the camera...

Hello, my name is Urias from Brazil... I have the nex fs700r camera and I have been trying to record in 4k on video assist blackmagic 5 ", and do not give me the option to record in 4k, that is, the video output does not show the option of 4k. You can help me
is that support sony fx6????
Hi Justin, how is this with the Pocket 4K? Can I record simultaneously on both the Pocket 4K and the Video Assist with pushing just 1 button?
Yupp!
Justin Phillip no way! That’s awesome!
nice review, i have the first 3g 5inch bm, and the most issue and i hate so much is can`t erase clips, this version fix that?
hmmm….im not sure, probably not.
@@JustinPhillip Since you mentioned age I will give a hint here. ... (While hanging out on the sets of Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Taxi, and a few more I watched a lot of multi camera productions and the time saved creating content. And got paid for it.)
Just shot my first Raw Q0 on the P 4k . I haven't put luts on in camera yet but will start later today. I have been hesitating on the Vlog for the Gh5.
I am floored since finding out film is 13 stops of dynamic range!
A movie studio is my dream legacy. We must Dream and thanks again.
What frame guides are available
Justin, can you say anything about fan noise and use with shotgun mic attached to a small camera rig like the one you use in the video? Is it noisy?
Chris Kooistra This monitor is very noisy
Thank you for this great video. I got a question for you. Is it possible to use AF tracking focus (face and eyes) on Sony a7 Mark III using Blackmagic Video Assist?
i dont know about that, you mean like touch to AF? you should check out PortKeys BM5 for something like that
Justin I have some old DVCAM and HDV tapes I want to digitize and use this device. Do you see any issues with that? Both players have 3G/SDI (SD/HD) output. I also have the option of converting both SDI source feeds to HDMI through the BM SD->HDMI bi-directional convertor (probably not needed).
not sure about that one
Will this accept analog standard def signals via the SDI in?
Great review I have just received my 5inch video assist hdr monitor and am about to do my own review on my channel and wondered has yours got a green shift in the monitor image mine seems to be slightly shifted to the green I have tried all the adjustments but no difference also when changing from ProRes to DNxHR the colour shift changes.
David Hoult hmmm, no i don’t have green shift. Maybe something going on from your camera end?
@@JustinPhillip Not sure looks fine on my Shinobi
David Hoult hmmm, yeah i dont know, you adjust the saturation levels? It could be your lights have a green shift and you just never had a good enough monitor to tell...do you have any green plus or minus gels? 🤷🏻♂️
Justin Phillip Yes adjusted the saturation and tried it with natural light just from my window in the studio I have messaged blackmagic and am waiting for a reply but I’ll keep testing and see what I find.
Justin Phillip Hi just a update had contact with blackmagic and they have said their engineers are aware of the colour shift problem and are looking into it and will release a firmware update to fix it just don’t know when.
I made it that long, so THANKS 😊 for call me pretty damn COOL 😎. GREAT 👍🏽 video as usual.
Ski-ter Jones Awesome! Appreciate it 🙌🏼
Hey, what your camera for this video and what metabone u use for this video. Thanky please answer
Hypebusters All gear is listed in the description. You just have to do a little bit of scrolling. Thanky please
Justin Phillip i know bro, but you put 2 camera in the description. So thats make me so confuse. I just ask one camera u use for record this video and what metabone u use
Hypebusters AH I see. Pocket 4K, Metabones Ultra Cine Lock, and Zeiss 50mm f/1.4
If Videotimecode is coming in , will the sdi-out port pass that timecode on? thanks.
Would have to test
@@JustinPhillip That would be great.
Man thank you!! Keep rocking your videos are very helpful!!!
Is there any solution for timecode input into the monitor? Can the 7'' read audio timecode via the mini xlr from a tentacle sync e?
Can I have it being used via HDMI in and have it loop out VIA the SDI out? Or does it only work with the input you are using? I am wanting to use the HDMI input but want to loop out via the SDI output.
i believe you could do that
The black magic video asistan can record BRAW from a Canon, Nikon or Sony?
Canon c300ii and Panasonic EVA1...
If the monitor had built in video receiver and a transmitter to put on any cam I’m sure they would sell a lot of them.
Can you colour grade DCI-P3 on a PC? I've only seen films graded on a big projection.
It's a technology that's in screens, not the data
P3 is a colour gamut. It just specifies the breadth of unique colours within a defined standard. Why it's an industry standard - you kind of explained but it's not tech, so much as it's a specification.
You can grade in srgb, rec709, P3 and more on the same computer/monitor.
Because it's a wide colour gamut, companies are keen to say that their product's displays are P3. It's a marketing thing. Most of the time, they're displaying a % of P3, not actually displaying 100% of the colours (but probably all of 709 for instance).
Edit: in short, it is data :)
Miles M Thanks for clarifying! Blackmagic boasts that this monitor covers 100% of the DCP-3 gamut 🤷🏻♂️
MediaInfo says these files are recorded by the GH5 in BT.2020 color space with Transfer Characteristics: HLG.
Does anyone know if the Video Assist 12G can record HLG format DNxHR MOV files with the correct HLG metadata?
just sold my Atomos Ninja getting this instead, goodbye Atomos and your Pro res raw bs, hello braw. Thank you for the video Justin keep up the good work.
Is there a list somewhere of all the cameras that the Video Assist can Record BRAW from?
Aaron Peipert Nothing that I can find. I know Canon Cinema Cameras, Panasonic EV1, and i believe some Sony cameras. But that’s just what they’ve been saying and demo-ing at the trade shows
@@JustinPhillip so the GH5 can have it's image exported in BRAW?
David Griffin No, GH5 is ProRes only.
@@JustinPhillip thank you. Will that open & edit in Davinci Resolve 16 on a PC?
David Griffin Yes
Does it come with a Resolve license?
negative
So, you can't record vfr slow motion with this monitor then??
Overcrank is a function inside of the camera. What you can do is record 60fps on the monitor and then slow it down in post.
@@JustinPhillip So, I'm limited to 60fps then. If I wanted to record 120fps using vfr then I'd have to do it inside the camera. I have a GH5 and I'm Looking for a monitor. Thanks for your reply :) 🙏
where are people seeing that blackmagic said they’d fix the lag? i googled but couldn’t find anything
John Probably a rumor. Blackmagic update their stuff all the time, so maybe that’s where it came from 🤷🏻♂️
holy lag! are you still using it after a year?
yupp. i have the 7” version now, for 1st AC monitor. Theres no lag with Komodo. GH5 was notorious for hdmi lag
@@JustinPhillip so the lag is a GH5 thing? good to know.
@@daslolo Totally. it’s notorious for that
@@JustinPhillip I noticed quite a bit of a lag on the S5 as well. What camera do you use for work?
@@daslolo RED Komodo
blackmagic needs to buy came tv and embed their propriety wireless video tech into their monitors
That’d be awesome, to compete with smallHD
I really don't like it doesn't have an audio-in.
the audio is transmitted through sdi or hdmi. But the 7” one does have xlr
@@JustinPhillip Yeah I know, I wouldn't really call that audio in. It means I have to connect audio on the camera, way less versatile. Mini xlr is perfect, but the 5" imo could at least have had a line/mini jack in (like the Ninja V does).
Lol, you have 128GB SD cards, and here I am, recording a max of 5 minutes BRAW 12:1 on my tiny 8GB SD's (no, I didn't buy these for this camera lol).
Klatcha Bobby Hey, i remember a time when i didnt have enough memory cards for jobs and running to Target during lunch break! 🤣🙌🏼
Justin Phillip The T5 will definitely be in my shopping cart soon
I saw this video a while ago and was really impressed with this monitor, but today I tried it and the colors are really bad. They are waaaay off. My cheap freeworld does a much better job. Yellow becomes purple/red-ish! And you can't even calibrate it? Its ridiculous.
do you have the latest firmware? And you can adjust the contrast & saturation
@@JustinPhillip i can adjust the sat and brightness, but that doesn't change the colors... Yellow is still purple/red
@@TheBjornarv Firmware 3.3.1?
@@JustinPhillip firmware 3.3
@@TheBjornarv bad egg i suppose
Anyone else notice the video artifact at about 15 frames after 11:32
Otab Will Yupp! I noticed that in Premiere as well. What’s going on there?
Justin Phillip i vaguely remember seeing a similar artifact mentioned by other people using the bmpcc 4k. Maybe check with black magic.
Otab Will oh wow. ok 👌🏼
I don't like it as you can't use SSD's like the Atomos Ninja V.
Shark The Smasung T5 is an SSD, much smaller & lighter even
Fair enough Justin.
