Great work! Love all the weathering! Just a tip, on my Tusken build I used a rustoleum “multicolored textured” spray paint lightly dusted on the helmet after I finished assembly with the metal bits masked off. That added some texture to the duck cloth that really made it look like sand had collected on the surface.
This is FANTASTIC!!! While not a BoBF tusken, still REALLY great info for the strips, weathering, and attaching pieces! I am so happy I ran into it! I am in the middle of making the Tusken Warrior and needed to know how to do the base mask wraps... this is perfect! YOU ROCK! Thank you!
It looks cool, but what made you think of that if it's going to be wrapped anyway? It's a great idea, now I'm thinking of other things that could be coated lol. Was it regular pla or something special? Anyway, very cool as always👍
I thought I might be able to get away with not doing the leather layer because of the texture, but in the end I decided to go with the leather. It was just standard PLA.
@@VanOaksProps ah, OK, I can see where you're coming from on that. Maybe something like crepe over pva, keep the texture without the thickness? Either way, awesome build.
I think you made the right call applying the spikes before the strips. It leaves a much more natural look with the strips wrapping around the base rather than the spikes sitting on top of the strips.
Came here from maker alliance discord! I'm totally blown away! I spent a little time while watching the show trying to think of how to recreate these characters and you've done a phenomenal job!
If you have a local thrift store like an ARC-Goodwill in your area what's donated to them can be quite a nice supply of odds n ends for builds. Whether its towels to lamps and everything in between what they have is often stocked by the materials there made from or by assortment. They often save seasonal items like Halloween instead of putting them out as they come in as well as the clothing that can be used for costumes. Regularly visiting them espevially on sale days what you might find and repurpose can be up to your imagination. I have found aluminium antlers to beauty school heads used to teach hair styling skills there and thinking outside the box with what you'll find there often a great buy too...
AWESOME Derek!! This turned out soooo cool! Tusken Raiders were always my favorite characters from the Star Wars universe ever since I saw the first film as a kid in the 70’s! I just thought they were so wicked and interesting, just a great design! And I’ve always wanted to make one! Well awesome job buddy, what a super fun project! Cheers😄👍🎃
A lot of people will use duck cloth, but the correct fabric is bull denim. I'm also quite partial to using really watered down acrylic paints sprayed on using a regular sprayer like an old Windex bottle to embed the color within the fibers. On my build I also angled the eye stalks inward so you can see without causing double vision. Great job though overall!
I liken your videos to Bob Ross painting tutorials. It’s fun to watch all the pieces come together perfectly. Looking forward to seeing your next masterpiece, Derek. We’ll done, sir!
Great build. Just now getting around to building this. how did you decide and measure where to put the screw holes on top of head and also around the eyes? I noticed no one in the comments asked, so I thought I would. Love your videos.
Good effort, I think for finishing, if you give it a dusting of fullers earth. It’ll really blend it all together and add that finishing touch. I usually add some gouges, scratches and roughness to my prints to. But that’s my individual taste .
Great job man!!! I’m working on mine as we speak… for the instant coffee weathering application… so you pre wet the canvas strips with plain water ? And then mix some of the instant coffee grounds in the spray bottle w/ water… then randomly spray the fabric??? Thanks in advance man !
That's correct. The wet canvas makes it easier for the coffee to get absorbed into the fabric, rather than just floating on top, and makes for a more natural looking staining.
Damn, I was hoping this would be a build out of scrap parts and PVC tubing (rather than 3d printing, since I don't have a printer). Based on what I see here, I do think that could be done, though the solid base he uses really makes this build easy. I do think a basic mask could be substituted and then build a "snout" (probably with foam and green stuff, or similar) before continuing on to create the rest of the mask. The only piece that looks complicated to build from scrap is the nose, not sure what to substitute, and wondering if anyone has ideas?
All and all, I think it's an excellent build. I'm amazed he did it in one day. I do think the whole piece needs more weathering, especially the leather around the nose/mouth. But it's a great build, good job.
It definitely could be done with pipes and foam. As for the nose, you could possibly use a 2" dowel, cut in half and round out the tip to create the shape.
Thanks for the replies. After watching the show, I see that your weathering is actually (unfortunately) accurate. The whole show needs a lot more weathering and grime. However there was some nice possibilities for decoration of Tusken Raider masks presented - it's too bad they didn't play a larger part in the overall picture of the show. Your build could easily be expanded and developed, and is an excellent base.
awesome job. wow. but I have one question for you. do you give a special treatment to your duck canvas before you put the espresso with the water? thanks

There’s lots of ways to access 3d printers. Many public libraries have them these days, and there’s quite a few paid options to have things printed for you. So the barrier is getting lower every day, should the need arise. Regardless, I appreciate you watching my videos.
@@VanOaksProps thank you for your reply, I didn't know about the options about these places, I'll have look into it. Looking forward for your next video.
Is a commercial quality 3D printer one of the "basic tools" that you need for this project? Oh, you also left out the whole part about creating the face plate as well. No offense, but this video is less about how to create your helmet and more about how to assemble a collection of parts that you already had available.
There are quite a few sellers online who make all of the parts needed to assemble your own helmet, should you choose to tackle the build. So to answer your question, no, you don’t need a 3d printer, but it’s a great tool to add to your arsenal and they’re getting more affordable every day. Create vs assemble is debatable. Any of the techniques used in the video can be applied towards making your own version of the Tusken helmet, it’s all about how much of your own creativity you put into it.
