    Emmy, I'm not sure if you read my last message on your last MRE video, but be careful with any Dairy Shakes that you may find in these MRE's. There was a big thing about salmonella with them and they came down with a "Do Not Consume" order for them a few years ago. They were supposed to be all recalled, but if you're getting them off eBay or whatever, you may still find a bad one. I think I remember that you're lactose intolerant, but I wouldn't even give them a little taste. You can google it for more info if you want.

    My husband, who just got out of the US Marines, watched this with me and said that any of the pound cakes are his favorite part of MREs. And now we've made a bet because he doesn't think I'll eat one! So we're off to the local military surplus tomorrow to see if we can find one for me to try.

    I like the idea of recreating an MRE perhaps as a healthy version or a child kind for camping! Things at the store that are just add water are a start and then there are so many freeze dried things out there. Kinda like the idea of the child version and one of your darlings can be the test researcher.♡

    The vegetarian lasagna looked really good to me, usually it's the texture of the meat in most lasagnas that make me dislike them, but that just completely solves the problem while looking strangely delicious.

      +Mouse Mike While you can use hot water, its best and easiest with cold water. The cappuccino has a zip lock type seal at the top so you can add water and shake then drink. Hot beverage bag is normally for coffee.
      never heated any MRE or used hot water so far in my time in the Marine Corps

    • @relam195

    • @2010FX35
      @2010FX35 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Mouse Mike Yes,the hot beverage bag is for hot beverages - BUT if they only pack a cold beverage powder for that mre, they still pack a 'hot beverage capable' bag. In other words, there is no "cold beverage bag" that they would pack in a mre with only a cold beverage powder included. The plastic they use is suitable for hot liquids, and they only manufacture one type of beverage bag.

    I have watched a lot of different TH-cam or review MREs and other obscure food items, I'm not really sure why, but I do. Having said that, your videos are by far some of the highest quality out there. You have a lovely, calm, clear, and quite endearing speaking voice, and you have a particular attention to detail that I love. And I'm not just being a flatterer, all of the shots in each of these videos is well lit and everything is put out nice and visible for you to see clearly, all descriptions of the products as she is tasting them are excruciatingly detailed and specific and relatable. Your videos are just undeniably of a higher quality than a lot of others out there you deserve so many more subs than you have .

    Great review, as usual! This veggie lasagna MRE is the only one I've ever tried. I also liked the inclusion of beans in the "lasagna". I forget what year mine was from, but the rest of the menu was different. Mine came with crackers, a toffee crunch cookie, and pears. I think it had the same dairy shake. Thanks again! Im so glad you made these videos because I discovered kiwidude and gundog and other ration pack youtubers. Funny enough, i went to a flea market in upstate new york and found a whole section of recent army rations and instantly bought it to finally try one for myself with my brother.
    It was a pork rib recipe menu with chedder potato soup and although when prepared it doesnt look appetizing, it actually is really good! Especially if you're really hungry. Much better than school lunches, frozen dinners and anything else. I had such low expectations for the taste and all the youtubers were NOT lying when they said a little salt and pepper goes a long way.
    But I was actually really really pleasantly surprised with having discovered this all thanks to your channel. Because of you i've tried so many other treats from other countries. Thanks for your videos!

    Agree that the hot beverage bag was for the coffee. When I was in service (in the '90s), the lemonade was made in our canteen cup, not in a bag from the MRE. Also, I don't remember having chemical heater bags to heat up our entree. We used to set ours on a hot generator. Thanks for these great videos! A real stroll down memory lane.

    I tried one of the commercially available MRE-STAR ration meals recently. It was the beef stew variant.
    It really reminded me of a stew I used to eat in the 1980's called Chuckwagon Dinner. Not a gourmet food by any stretch but it was delicious anyways. If they canned it and sold it at stores I would be a life-long customer.

    Here in Chile and I think Latin America in general we only have that kind of bread, not the packaged fluffy one that americans eat, that they do sell in supermarkets, but families rarely prefer that one.
    Its actually really good because if you go at the right time at the supermarket or bread shops (we do have bread shops) or just a minimarket that sells bread, you can get the bread still hot, because they make it there!

    Great video, Emmy! I'd say the hot beverage bag was for heating the water to add to your cappuccino. After all, it's not like they have kettles out there, it would be placed in the fireless heating bag with the meal and then added to the drink when heated. 😊

    My favorite way to do the Cappuccino + Poundcake meal is to chop up the pound cake with the spoon and add a bit of the Cappuccino... sort of an English pudding. (not so great with the orange poundcake... but also works with most of the muffin-tops...)

    i have to say, my favorite MRE is chili mac. lots of noodles and little meat balls inside a pretty common tomato sauce. like all MRE its not thing to write home about, but it fills you up with really wholesome food.

    If you can get your hands on coco beverage powder and creamy peanut butter. Add water to the powder, a little bit at time to make a paste. Then add peanut butter to taste. Tada a Reese's peanut butter cup in a bag.

    I am glad you do these reviews to compare to other countries MRE. You would think they would throw in more snack items and condiments to change up the menu. A chunk of candy, a pack of steak sauce, mustard or so on could really help menu fatigue. We would send water flavor sticks, hard candy or even gummy bears to friends in military. Good packing material for other gifts along with the traditional air popped corn.

    I just came across this randomly and remember having to eat these during hurricane Matthew in 2016. Tree fell on the house and we had no electricity it was terrifying but the mres were really a life saver. I called my marine corps father for hacks on how to make them taste better

    it seems like this US MRE contained less food than your other US MRE videos? I compared it to the other two you've done (excluding the cold weather one). Why does it always seem the vegetarian meals are less food?

    • @MissingOne123
      @MissingOne123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Vivian Jean I think its probably based off of calories/protein/nutrients rather than quantity of food. The lasagna probably had more calories and then the bread + peanut butter and what not, so less food maybe? Im not sure.

    • @VivKJean
      @VivKJean 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i highly doubt it. chicken and other meat based protein contains way more calories than veggies. for example the first meal Emmy did has a chicken noodle dish, bread with peanut butter and jelly, and trail mix/nuts. this meal had lasagna, bread and just peanut butter and apple sauce. the vegetarian meal is way less calories

    • @leekymkween
      @leekymkween 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Vivian Jean carbs are very dense in calories (4 cal pergram of carb, protein is also the same) so i think the bread, pancake and bean pasta weight out the same as the chicken noodle dish, bread and nuts.

    • @justjeski
      @justjeski 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Vivian Jean What do you mean you highly doubt it? A simple trip to google shows you that they are calorie based! Stop trying to find fault in this pack and make out vegetarians are being hard done by!

    • @peepslostsheep
      @peepslostsheep 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Vivian Jean Many of these foods are calorie dense. The vegetarian meal actually contains MORE calories than the chicken noodle and vegetable one.
      As far as solids go, the chicken noodle one had-
      Chicken noodle and vegetables. (250 calories)
      Wheat snack bread. (200 calories)
      Peanut butter (250 calories)
      Jelly (70 calories)
      Trail mix (310 calories)
      1080 calories.
      This one had-
      Lasagna (250 calories)
      Apple sauce (160 calories)
      Peanut butter (250 calories)
      Wheat snack bread (200 calories)
      Pound cake (280 calories)
      1140 calories.
      The vegetarian meal also featured a sugary (calorie rich) coffee drink, while the chicken noodle one came with black coffee (dry creamer/sugar to add if desired).

But you didn't keep the camera rolling long enough for the stomach cramps to set in....bone app the teeth!

    So odd to see this taken out and eaten on a plate! I'm used to digging into this while still in the pouch! And the "hot beverage bag" is pretty much universal to all MREs and is typically used for whatever drink powder is provided, not for the cappuccino. The cappuccino is easiest drunk straight from it's pouch. Nice to see an MRE from a different perspective! (And yeah, that mango applesauce is one of my favorite finds in an MRE.)
