In a non-combat survival situation, you can usually build a fire - and are encouraged to, for hot food, signalling and just plain morale. That kit was included in the seat pan of ejection seats, along with many other items. It came down with you hanging from the parachute. In 99% of instances, it was never used because you'd be picked up by rescue forces soon after you landed. In fact, many jets weren't even equipped with it. None of the ones I flew did.
Keep the key Emmy! It’s great to unlock doors that only have a small round hole on the outside. I used to lock the doors when I was a kid and this is how dad got me out. Lol!
the house we rent came with little wire "keys" with loops on one end specifically for the bathroom doors that have those locks. I never knew there were actual keys for those types of doors. 😆
hellsingmongrel lol! That’s the very room I’d get locked in! There aren’t any actual keys for them. The Spam keys were just an easy solution. The inside lock mechanism has a small slot that the key fits perfectly!
I'm late to the convo but that's why I keep a small screw driver over the bathroom door... my son has locked himself in before and left it locked when he came out
OMG!! I loved opening spam with that key!! We used to fight over who got to do it. I think they did away with it sometime in the 80's or early 90's, bummer!
This is wild... my dad was in the Air Force in the 80s and was going through survival training in Washington state during the winter of 1984. I showed him this video and he was like whoa, blast from the past! He then said my mom's cooking is much better lol.
We make a porage out of those bars ,heat the water in the tin lid for that ,same with the coffee hot if possible makes it palatable! Love to you and your family as always God bless
Thanks Emmy, another knock it out of the park video! I wonder, how many people are out there who have actually had to rely on rations like this to survive in real-life situations. It's a fascinating subject and one I would appreciate anyone out there who has had to do this, to share their experience. Thanks in advance and thank you for your service!
the last time i was this early, emmy didn't even own a microwave! also, did anyone else get really nervous when she drank from the can? that looked really sharp
Emmy, I watch almost every video you put out and I never comment. I just realized that I've enjoyed all sorts of things I never would have known about and I've never thanked you for that you do. Here goes: thank you! I love your content. Specifically I love food and I love weird food. You are such a joy to watch. Please keep doing what you do!
Jennifer, thanks so much for the kind words. It's really nice to hear that not only do you enjoy and appreciate the content, but you learned something, too. 🙌🙌🙌
The SPAM video reminded me of WW2 My mum is 85years and isn't keen on SPAM as it was pretty much all they had in 1940s UK. Same with corned beef espl. WW1
Is it bad that I laughed at that? I was thinking, maybe the people eating these rations would have had their own cup they could have poured the coffee into? I'm glad it wasn't me doing the testing anyway, I've managed to cut my mouth on a spoon before.
Thank you for saying what you said about hot food. When hurricane Irma hit here my family was without power for a couple of days. A neighbor cooked food on their grill and offered it to anyone who asked. It was such a hot day, but I reveled it having a hot meal.
Love all of your videos! My husband and I just saw a Pringles commercial with their most recent marketing campaign to stack different Pringle flavors to create a flavor combo. I’d love to see you do a video on this! Lots of love from Texas 💛
I love you're willing to try the older ones & seem to be smart about it. Afterall in a survival situation I'm sure we all would be greatful for anything!!! I'm blessed & have never been hungry or in any similar situation. But you took some fear away; god forbid we ever are!
I love you and your videos sooo much, Em. I must admit though, I have been binge watching you and these MRE videos for 3 days now 🤭🤣🙃 you are too pure for this cruel world 😭 stay sweet and I will continue watching 💜💜👍🏻👍🏻
None of the items in it contain the things that are more likely to become toxic, so as long as nothing got any visible mold, it's most likely just going to taste stale and/or rancid.
I don't recall tuna having the metal strips and keys, just Spam and corned beef. I think corned beef still does. Maybe sardines, too, and a few other things. Usually odd shaped cans, seldom round ones.
My family ate so much canned products as a kid I had a whole collection of those metal keys. It was very affordable and you could do alot with the different meats. Grill, fry, grind and baked.
Another awesome video Emmy! One time when I was younger, my brother and I took our families earth quake MREs and ate them in the back yard until we were so full we felt ill. We got into so much trouble! Childhoods are for learning. Your video made my day. Keep up the great work!
That can tin brings back memory’s, when I was young we had quite a few tins that had to be opened that way, we used to loved think it was cool. We pronounce it “Weetbix” in Australia. Very brave to eat something that old, don’t whether I would have.
Just found your channel and subscribed immediately! What fun and informative content (and your hair is ADORABLE). Looking forward to new videos and watching old ones!
I have to ask... I’ve been binge watching you for days now and I’m super curious, have you ever gotten sick from anything you’ve tried on your channel? 🤔 Also, adore your channel!!! Take care. 💕
I can promise you in a survival situation you would definitely have to boil your water. Therefore you could have used hot water and it would’ve been much more appealing!
Emmy, something I always wonder when watching these videos...do you ever get sick after eating these old rations? Even just an upset stomach? You are brave to eat them lol!
You are such a wonderful person I wish you were my auntie or something lol, I just came across your channel today and have already watched many of your vids please keep uploading and your voice is so nice to listen to 😊
Pearl the rebel 1984 by george orwell is a political fiction novel set in a dystopian future where history as where as we know it has been erased by war, the thought police are a secret police whose job is to find and arrest all cases of individualism. The joke was mainly to point out the irony at the fact that there's a book known as 1984 and the fact that the MRE Emmy is showcasing happened to be made around in 1984.
Chicken bouillon is great for when you're prepping for a colonoscopy and are restricted to clear liquids for a day. It was the only thing I tried that my body actually registered as food and calmed down the hunger pangs.
That was interesting. I didn't know rations like that were still being issued in the 80s. I've seen Steve 1989 open similar tins from the 1940s and 1950s, and most of them were like something from a horror movie.
A little late, but just thought I would throw my two cents in on the Airman Survival Kits... First off this is only "one part" of a three part survival ensemble that is issued to all Military Pilots in the US: Module 1 [In a Vacuum Seal Bag] (General Kit): • 1 Bottle Water Purification Tablets (50) • 1 Water Purification Filter+ Straw • 1 Water Storage Bag-1 Liter • 1 Signal Strobe APALS(White) • 1 Signal Strobe APALS(IR) • 1Mini LED Light Photon 1 • 1 Sunsect 3 oz Repellant + Sunscreen • 1 Fire Starter, Aviation Survival Spark-Lite • Weather Resistant Matches • 1 Compass Tritium D3 • 1 Derma-Shave: Folding Razor Blade • 1 Signal Mirror 2"x3" • 1 Flash Guard, Red/Blue • 1 Flat Emergency Whistle USCG/SOLAS • 1 SOL Survival Blanket 96" x56" • 1 Emergency Fishing Kit Moduale 2 [In a Vacuum Sealed Bag] (Medical Kit): • 1 Instruction Card • 2-10 pk Tablets Aspirin • Enerjet • 4-5 Safety Pins • 1 Razor Surgical Prep Folding • 10 Tablets Lomotil (Anti-Diarrhea, 2mg) • 1Whirl-Pak 18 oz Bag • 1 Forceps • 1-1/2 oz Bottle Povidine-Iodine Solution or 3 PVP Prep Pad • 2 Pairs Exam Gloves Lg • 1-1/8 oz Tube Opthalmic Ointment • 1 sm Bar Soap Ivory • 3 Anti-bacterial Towlette • 1 Gauze Stretch Bandage 2" x 75" • 6 Adhesive Bandaid 3" x 3/4" • 1 Transpore Tape 1" x 1.5 yd • 1 Tourniquet • Moleskin 3" x 4" • Chewing Gum, Hard Candy OPTIONAL ITEMS (Depending on Region of the World): • 6 Doxycyclene Pills • 6 Chloroquine Pills • Emergency Drinking Water (2 packs) • Mosquito Headnet & Mittens • Flexible Saw • Gill Net
I would have found the temptation to use the near-halves of the can on the induction burner... just to have hot coffee and soup. I’m told that even when sealed, food goes bad because over long spans of time the ingredients react with each other...
I was also issued may 1984! 😂
Alicja Frank lol happy birth month!
I was issued 6 months later XD
Alicja Frank issued July, 1984! Haven't passed my used by date yet 👍😎
🙋🏽 Me too!
I was issued April 29th 1985, so very close.
*Smells cereal bar*
“Yeah smells musty....let’s give it a try” lol
😂
Steve1989 would be proud.

Appreciate your service.
Excellent information. Really helps understand the working and function of these MREs and the role they played in that time. I enjoyed reading this.
I love these military ration taste test videos and I don't even no why I just find them fun to watch😁😁😁
They're fascinating, right?!
Me too!
I've been watching them for years, it never gets tired.
I love watching them too!
Keep the key Emmy! It’s great to unlock doors that only have a small round hole on the outside. I used to lock the doors when I was a kid and this is how dad got me out. Lol!
renee allen I used a Bobby pin.
ConstantCompanion we’ve used those too but a Spam key was easier. Now there are no Spam keys. 😣
the house we rent came with little wire "keys" with loops on one end specifically for the bathroom doors that have those locks. I never knew there were actual keys for those types of doors. 😆

You’re supposed to say ‘nice hiss’ lol. Steve would be proud. 😂
Jake Clay nice
Jake Clay Also, she needs a tray...nice!
At least it's only 34 years old and not 100 like that ancient beef that Steve ate. lol
Platzhallter he’s got an iron gut.
"Let's get this out onto a tray. Nice....mmkay"
I’d love to see a “what I eat in a day” video from you! 😊 I often times think... what do you eat in your day to day life.
“This smells musty”
PROCEEDS TO TAKE A BITE
Lololol you’re so brave girl, I absolutely love your channel

You make everything looks so easy!! Spam used to come in cans like that with a key.... Wayyyyy hard to open with such grace!
We make a porage out of those bars ,heat the water in the tin lid for that ,same with the coffee hot if possible makes it palatable! Love to you and your family as always God bless
You are so great at this. I have binge watched all your content. Thank You! All the best to you are yours!
emmy should make her own diy survival kit food...just for fun
Thanks Emmy, another knock it out of the park video! I wonder, how many people are out there who have actually had to rely on rations like this to survive in real-life situations. It's a fascinating subject and one I would appreciate anyone out there who has had to do this, to share their experience. Thanks in advance and thank you for your service!
Love the way it opens. So satisfying
Wow emmy you are quite brave to taste a ration that is older than my brother...😂 'nice hiss' there😂
Janathri Weeratunga This is MUCH MUCH worse! th-cam.com/video/jZoHuMwZwTk/w-d-xo.html
bboysfanatic omg...okay...that is crazy 😮 I really didn't think steve would try that beef😂😮
Janathri Weeratunga where is Steve his videos are very relaxed and for some reason the Bob Ross of MRE's
You SHOULD SEE Steve1989's Channel. Now he has had 1940s rations!
the last time i was this early, emmy didn't even own a microwave!
also, did anyone else get really nervous when she drank from the can? that looked really sharp
I was thinking, "use the spoon!"
Bahaha at the microwave reference - I remember those days too!
Emmy, I watch almost every video you put out and I never comment. I just realized that I've enjoyed all sorts of things I never would have known about and I've never thanked you for that you do. Jennifer, thanks so much for the kind words. It's really nice to hear that not only do you enjoy and appreciate the content, but you learned something, too. 🙌🙌🙌
emmymadeinjapan literally freaking out that you replied!
Gives you an appreciation for troops in the field eating cold rations, while defending our country. Great video.
Looks a sorry ration. It was my era when I was serving but in the UK. Glad I didn’t come across these.
I love how respectful you are
In a survival situation, unless I'm being hunted by the enemy I'm building a fire and having some hot coffee and hot soup.
it's so cool that you're eating a ration older than me 😊 and i love that it's inside a can, really unique. thanks for the video on it, Emmy!
The SPAM video reminded me of WW2 My mum is 85years and isn't keen on SPAM as it was pretty much all they had in 1940s UK. Same with corned beef espl. WW1
I hope you drank a little vodka after just in case , it would kill any bacteria present. Hopefully it did not make you ill .
Oh.. Does drinking vodka kill potential bacteria? ...good to know. Gooood tooo knooowww! ;)
@@Sarakate601 he and 47 more idiots say 'yes' :)
@@Sarakate601 If the bacteria can survive your stomach acid, I doubt vodka would have much of an effect.
I thought you weren't going to eat that but you did. Such a brave one ! 😂👏
I literally stay up to watch your videos even though I need to get up at 3am! I just love you so much Emmy
Reina Rants
Why do you need to get up at 3am?
That Thing You See At The Corner Of Your Eye I'm a manager at Bojangles :)
Reina Rants
Nice! I love bojangles!
😴
So many cans have pull tabs now. The key kind are SO SATISFYING! I do know of a few products that still use them. But not many
That's what you call preservatives
It's a sealed, air-tight can. No preservatives needed.
kylesenior it was a joke on the length of time it's lasted mate.
My birth year! That color of blue is gorgeous on you.
Same here month of June
June O july here!
As my username says, me too. ‘84 was a good year lol
Me too! November
Eccentric Detectorist's I was born in 1884 lolll I'm 100 years older than u
I'll have a little blood with my coffee.
Herbert I love irony coffee aswell
Mmmmm... nothing like the feeling of cut up lips.
They should’ve included a mini biodegradable straw
Like one of those straws they gave us when I was a kid for the Milk bags at school. They had a very sharp side that was great for stabbing other kids.
Is it bad that I laughed at that?
I was thinking, maybe the people eating these rations would have had their own cup they could have poured the coffee into?
I'm glad it wasn't me doing the testing anyway, I've managed to cut my mouth on a spoon before.
These MRE videos are endlessly fascinating, thank you. (And I can't believe you tasted everything from this ancient pack!)
Thank you for saying what you said about hot food. When hurricane Irma hit here my family was without power for a couple of days. A neighbor cooked food on their grill and offered it to anyone who asked. It was such a hot day, but I reveled it having a hot meal.
Two months older than me! I'm not stale, anyway....
And apparently my blue chicken is still laying plastic eggs. Time for the vet, I think. ;-)
Love all of your videos! My husband and I just saw a Pringles commercial with their most recent marketing campaign to stack different Pringle flavors to create a flavor combo. I’d love to see you do a video on this! Lots of love from Texas 💛
I can’t believe you’d eat that! You’re so brave!
That tin reminds me of opening a tin of corned beef. You should try corned beef cooked with cabbage and rice sometime!
I remember those kinds of cans when I was a kid. :D
I love you're willing to try the older ones & seem to be smart about it. Afterall in a survival situation I'm sure we all would be greatful for anything!!! I'm blessed & have never been hungry or in any similar situation. But you took some fear away; god forbid we ever are!
"Doesnt smell so fresh. A bit musty. Okay, let's give that a go."
Wow.
I love you and your videos sooo much, Em. I must admit though, I have been binge watching you and these MRE videos for 3 days now 🤭🤣🙃 you are too pure for this cruel world 😭 stay sweet and I will continue watching 💜💜👍🏻👍🏻
Military rations sure have come a long way since my freshman year in high school!
I like how she utilizes the tin ware. Many others don't.
Your brave eating a 30 year old ration
Kamira Kiyohide Search up Steve MRE on TH-cam if you think 30 years old is impressively dangerous. Lol
2% Milky NICE HISS 😎
2% Milky Steve can even eat a 100+ year old MRE
None of the items in it contain the things that are more likely to become toxic, so as long as nothing got any visible mold, it's most likely just going to taste stale and/or rancid.
Kamira Kiyohide *You're
That's the way Spam used to be packed, along with tuna, etc.....
Merle Morrison I was wondering if anybody would catch on to that.
I still see canned corned beef come in cans like that.
breakinthemix I still buy cornbeef and spam in these tins ^.^ they're my favourite to open haha!
I don't recall tuna having the metal strips and keys, just Spam and corned beef. I think corned beef still does. Maybe sardines, too, and a few other things. Usually odd shaped cans, seldom round ones.
I still buy canned corned beef that’s packed like that! My bf loves corned beef hash lol
I have been binge watching your videos love you and your channel
Really enjoying these rations videos! Please do more, Emmy!
My family ate so much canned products as a kid I had a whole collection of those metal keys. It was very affordable and you could do alot with the different meats. Grill, fry, grind and baked.
Watching Emmy while fasting, I want those ricecornflake bar.
Emmy have you ever gotten sick from any of your taste test?
I love theses MRE taste test
Balinda Barks l think she got sick from a dollar tree taste test if I’m not mistaken
Don't forget the 18+ Curry Challenge lol I know that unfortunately got her really sick
Another awesome video Emmy! One time when I was younger, my brother and I took our families earth quake MREs and ate them in the back yard until we were so full we felt ill. We got into so much trouble! Childhoods are for learning. Your video made my day. Keep up the great work!
That’s an old fashioned spam can! Cool! Man that takes me back.
Yes yes yeees! Another one of your amazing videos.
"snaps pretty easily," Story of my life.
The best part about this video is the part where you open the can. SERIOUSLY COOL, WE SHOULD BRING THIS BACK
emmymadeinjapan i love your ration reviews their great keep them up x
This is awesome!! I love the design! And brave emmy for eating super old food.
Wow! 1984-my birth year! How cool to see something 34 years old & still packaged in. 🙂
That can tin brings back memory’s, when I was young we had quite a few tins that had to be opened that way, we used to loved think it was cool. We pronounce it “Weetbix” in Australia. Very brave to eat something that old, don’t whether I would have.
This is fantastic. That is a very special and specific ration.
Outstanding Ms Emmy ! Great ration !
Just found your channel and subscribed immediately! What fun and informative content (and your hair is ADORABLE). Looking forward to new videos and watching old ones!
I, too, and impressed that a 3 decade old emergency ratio was at least edible.
I'm so happy you are doing a 1984 food ration box 1984 is my year when I was born
I have to ask...
I’ve been binge watching you for days now and I’m super curious, have you ever gotten sick from anything you’ve tried on your channel? 🤔
Also, adore your channel!!! Take care. 💕
That intro 😂 i felt like i was in the beginning of a scence from call of duty 😂 ok now back to the video 👋
Now let's get this out onto a tray
Jumpcut
NICE!
Lilith Sahl I was waiting for my nice hiss
My Dad went into the Air Force in 1983 right out of High School. He probably had one of these during Basic Training.
This is your most suspenceful video I was so worried you would cut yourself on that very sharp can
My Husband was in the Air Force in 1984. Very interesting to me!
Why am I addicted to this🧐🤔
I can promise you in a survival situation you would definitely have to boil your water. Therefore you could have used hot water and it would’ve been much more appealing!
Veggiedeb you wouldn't be able to boil anything if you were lost at sea
You wouldn’t want to build a fire to boil water if you we’re behind enemy lines.
I was just 4 years old when this ration was made! This video came out a day before my birthday too! My birthday is May 22! 😃❤️👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Posted on my birthday and i was born in 1984. Love your videos.
Ahhhhh I've never been this early for a video! Love your content Emmy!
Emmy, something I always wonder when watching these videos...do you ever get sick after eating these old rations? Even just an upset stomach? You are brave to eat them lol!
You are such a wonderful person I wish you were my auntie or something lol, I just came across your channel today and have already watched many of your vids please keep uploading and your voice is so nice to listen to 😊
I wish all cans came like that that was so satisfying to watch
I just read 1984 by George Orwell and watched the movie today! Too cool.
We used to open 5 lb. Hams in tins with a key like that.
Best thing to wake up to in the morning. Greetings everyone 😊
I remember when SPAM cans opened with a key like this.
Emmy girl! You so brave!
This food is from the year I was born!
You are a brave lady.
Shout out from Edinburg, Mission, Mcallen Texas! Love you Emmy!
I'm trying to imagine Emmy swearing but I can't. She's a ball of adorable.
1984 huh? Well, at least there's no thought police
Captinamerica599 AMAZING COMMENT

"It actually tastes like food, or at least something similar." They need to put that review on the tin if they're still making these.
I miss opening Spam with the key! You are a brave woman trying 34 year old food lol
Me and my bf love your videos! Hope you have a good week emmy

do you know how i got this scars? :))
dat tin looks really dangerous, you were really brave and careful btw
Wow you are brave tasting something that old!!! You must have a very strong stomach!!!!
Ashens would have just nibbled a corner but Emmy goes all in for the full bite. Love 💕
