City Hunter's Ryo Saeba is many things, a womanizer, a goofball, and most importantly, the best sweeper in the business. If you haven't checked out this classic, you're missing out what can only be described as what would happen if anime made a spoof on James Bond.

City Hunter is an incredibly popular franchise almost everywhere but America. It's been adapted multiple times for live action, movies, tv, with Ryo Saeba being played by a variety of people including Jackie Chan. That's how you know you've made it big. But for many, City Hunter was an anime before their time, yet still worth exploring. It's got an amazing synth wave aesthetic of the late 80s and early 90s that just shines through in show. So if you're ready to take a dive back to a classical time for anime, let's talk about City Hunter.

City Hunter embraces the 80s like a badge of honor! Its aesthetic of jazz with the beautiful night life just adds to the noir style of the series..way before Cowboy Beebop! Ryu is your hero with crazy antics like Lupin the 3rd, but will get in some serious kill or be killed situations like a Golgo 13 episode or OVA. City Hunter was a huge hit with Jump with classics like Kimagure Orange Road, FOTNS,Video Girl Ai and Bastard!!! Such a fantastic era( and all before JoJos Bizarre Adventures)!

As soon as I saw the thumbnail on my home page my emotions gushed in my head.
This comment is going to be a very long one bursting with emotions so be patient.
I have watched many anime I mean many the best the worst, etc, etc. I started watching City Hunter (probably season 3) because it aired in the time frame I was free, on animax, not because someone recommended me. After a few episodes I realised it was a good anime. Well few months later animax was discontinued in my country.
I continued watching City hunter online(irregular manner). I realised there was a spin off called Angel Heart. I gave it a shot, I did not like it, not at all, I thought that probably Angel Heart was one of the worst anime I have ever watched till then.
So, I started watching City Hunter again from season 1 on 2019.
I became obsessed with City hunter. I watched each and every episode every movie possible, completed the whole series probably all that City hunter could offer(approximately 150 episode and 5 movies) within a month.
I was so obsessed with City Hunter I watched Jacki Chan's City Hunter then I watched french adaptation City Hunter (probably the best live action ever).
After I completed everything the only thing that remains was Angel Heart.
I started watching Angel Heart with disappointment and heavy heart cause I already kind of knew what the plot is from my earlier viewings.
But this time I realised I was soo wrong. Angel Heart is not like any other City Hunter episode.
If you have watched angel heart you know what I am talking about. Ryo is old, Kaori is dead but still among everyone, characters have depth in their emotions, somethings remained untold to their loved ones.
For me angel heart did justice of showing the beautiful angel in the series and showing the true nature of all other characters i.e. Saeko (who loved Ryo but never told him because she knew how much Ryo and Kaori loved each other, her desire to become a mother and a wife, to live a happy life with her family), Umibozu (a father figure, he is now blind and has no one to blame on), Miki (her kindness which was not that much shown in city hunter), Xiang (never knew how to be a normal person), Kaori (expressed her feelings to Ryo openly, and she knew that it would be a problem if they have their own children as they were city hunter) and last but not the least Ryo (he is now old, sad, his life is a regret. He thinks if he made the decision quickly then Kaori should never have died, he gave up on mokkori, he became an imperfect sweeper but a perfect father, also the transformation of assassin from trying to kill Kaori to mourning to her death, and also he cried for the first time expressing his feelings).
Also the ost are one of the best, like as usual city hunter style (I love it ❤️❤️). The character developement is just unbelievable!! Each and every original character shines in this series.
For me City Hunter was just the introduction and character development of the story Angel Heart.
I have watched many emotional anime, very few made me cry, Koe no Katachi, Grave of the Fireflies, but Angel Heart had me choked throughout the series.
At the present moment Angel Heart have stole the throne of the best anime.
This year I realised that even the korean drama was adaptation from Tsukasa Hojo so I watched it and it was one of the best series.
It's sad that it was unable to get the recognition it deserves, I never see youtubers talk about City Hunter and Angel Heart. I don't blame anyone on this because you need patience to watch the whole "saga" (I guess, atleast for me it's a saga).
I hope after this video City Hunter get revived to some extent.
When Ryo cries you know how much of a emotional series angel heart is!!
As of now I am waiting with hopeless belief that someday they will release season 2 of Angel Heart.

I am most familair with the manga. Thinking back, it was interesting to see the tonal shift in the plot once Kaori became Ryo's partner. The early chapters had darker tones. Ryo did kill bad guys in early chapters. Once the revenge arc was completed, then Ryo almost never kill again.
I wonder if it was a conscious decision or a gambit to be more appealing to readers by the editors.

While he was very young, Ryo Saeba and his parents were involved in a plane crash when the plane they were riding on was shot down by terrorists. This incident gave Ryo a fear of flying. He was the only one who survived, but it was assumed that he also perished, which is why he's legally dead. This also means that he cannot legally own property, which is why he lets Kaori handle that side of things.
He was then made a child soldier by a guerilla group in South America, and the leader of that group was his adopted father, named Shin Kaibara. Unfortunately, after being driven insane due to the horrors of the war, he made Ryo become the test subject of the drug Angel Dust, a dangerous narcotic that increases the strength of individuals and also makes them ignore pain, while making them more violent and more prone to brainwashing. The side effects however includes a dangerous set of withdrawal symptoms that often ends in death. Ryo one of those few individuals know to survive this. On a more humorous note, the drug also gave him a massive sex drive.
Shin Kaibara then founded the notorious crime syndicate group Union Teope, which are the main antagonists of the series (they were omitted in the anime adaptation and replaced with the Red Pegasus cartel). They're considered to be the most feared criminal organization in the story, and have been responsible for many of the darker moments of the series, such as the killing of Hideyuki Makimura. Eventually, Ryo killed his stepfather to finally put a stop to his organization

nostalgia is always a good thing to look back on :) like you said, as long as you are not trapped in the past, its always a good time to revisit it. vaporwave and late 80's and 90's anime just hit the right notes.

City Hunter is quintessential 80's anime - more style than substance, but just good, lewd, politically-incorrect fun.
While you can pretty much jump into any episode from the get-go, I actually recommend starting off with the movie "City Hunter: .357 Magnum" - it's animated beautifully and has all the core "City Hunter" essentials (fast action, great gunfights, and trademark "mokkori" comedy) - if you enjoy that movie, you'll prolly like the rest of the City Hunter series.
Thanks Mike for giving love to one of my favs - and dropping Deltron 3000 wisdom? Respect.

It's great to see an English language video promoting City Hunter. When I got into it circa 1998 through ADV's first release of the 1997 special, I could never find any English websites discussing the show. I always felt I was an outsider for liking it while most of my friends liked DBZ. I am glad that Discotek is releasing the Bluray for US audiences. Considering that many old favorites like X-men TAS and G1 Transformers are still not on BD, I am tickled pink that CH is getting a new lease on life. I havent played the jump force game but im glad they featured Ryo in it. It would have been nice if you mentioned Saeko, Umibozu or pointed out some of the more memorable stories, but I guess that would have made the video too long lol.

About 5 years ago I wanted to watch a more older anime and learned about City Hunter. I only watched one of the films but I really enjoyed it. Fast forward to 2020 - the pandemic hits and I got way more time on my hands than before to watch a ton of anime. I decided to go with City Hunter simply because I remembered watching it in high school and loving what I saw. Binging the TV series was definitely a fun experience and one of my more memorable anime-watching marathons. I hate Ryo in so many ways, but I like him in other ways as well ha ha. The show is definitely outdated in some aspects but idk, there's this charm and looseness to it that makes it so appealing to me. Hoping for more City Hunter anime content in the future!

Actually grew up with this anime.
It is called Nicky Larson in French and was prominent along with Dragon Ball (Z), Fist of the North Star (Ken Le Survivant), Ranma 1/2, Saint Seiya ( Chevaliers du Zodiaque) and Sailormoon. The shows aired on the French channel TF1 on their Wednesday program called "Club Dorothée".
