Saint Seiya is a shonen from the past that many have heard of but it seems to have fallen through the cracks of the newest generation of anime viewers. It was highly influential, coming out the same year as two other monoliths of anime: Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball Z. Bonsai Pop yeap. Here in Brazil, Saint Seiya is very popular due to the fantastic voice acting. The voice actors from Saint Seiya here in Brazil are true celebs and their work is trully a piece of art because of the consistency of their work and overall appeal to the iconic moments in the series. Nostalgia waves came about thanks to the Netflix-Toei release of the classic, asgard, poseidon and hades sagas.

Actually, Saint Seiya wasn't just famous in Japan, but in fact, the show was (and still) HUGE in South America, France and Italy.
Here in Brazil specifically, the show was aired in '94 (thankfully with no censorship) and it became an instant cultural phenomenon (I dare to say, even more than it was in Japan).
It was almost like a religion, literally.

Hands down. I only watched SS once in my childhood, just ONCE, and with subs no less, and there were bits of the theme stuck in my head, with zero idea where they were from except that they were from some dope anime. And funny enough I read the manga in all its glory, but only discovered the SS theme by accident as a reference in a video, I'm hooked, hands down beautiful this theme.

Saint Seiya is considered one of the biggest anime phenomenons of the 1980s. It would become the inspiration for future series and movies, including several Gundam series such as Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Bleach, Legend of Heavenly Sphere Shurato, Ronin Warriors, Wild Knights Gulkeeva and Clash of the Titans. Dragon Ball's author Akira Toriyama is also fan of Saint Seiya's author
There are many series, movies and manga in Saint Seiya Multiverse
    I. Saint Seiya classic (Episodes : 114)
II. Saint Seiya The Hades Chapter Sanctuary (Episodes : 13)
III. Saint Seiya The Hades Chapter Inferno (Episodes : 12)
IV. Saint Seiya Soul of Gold (Episodes : 13)

VI. Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas (Season 1 - Episodes : 13)
VII. Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas (Season 2 - Episodes : 13)
VIII. Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas Season 3 has been cancelled, you need to read Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas' manga at Chapter 96 to 223 why? Because in May 2013, TMS Entertainment announced via it's Twitter account that there were no plans for a third season for Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas anime.
IX. Saint Seiya Omega (Episodes : 97)
    X. Saint Seiya Saintia Shō (Season 1 - Episodes : 10)
XI. NETFLIX ORIGINAL Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya (Season 1 - Episodes : 12)
    MOVIES :
    I. Saint Seiya Evil Goddess Eris
II. Saint Seiya The Heated Battle of Gods
III. Saint Seiya Legend of Crimson Youth
IV. Saint Seiya Warriors of the Final Holy Battle
    V. Saint Seiya Heaven Chapter Overture
VI. Saint Seiya Legend of Sanctuary
VII. Saint Seiya Knights of the Zodiac - LIVE ACTION MOVIE (Coming in 2023)
    MANGA :
    I. Saint Seiya
    II. Saint Seiya Next Dimension
    III. Saint Seiya Episode Zero
    IV. Saint Seiya Origin
    V. Saint Seiya Destiny
    VI. Saint Seiya Episode G
VII. Saint Seiya Episode G Assassin
VIII. Saint Seiya Episode G Requiem
IX. Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas
    X. Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas Gaiden
    XI. Saint Seiya Saintia Shō
XII. Saint Seiya Meio Iden Dark Wing
    XIII. Saint Seiya Gigantomachia (NOVEL)
XIV. Saint Seiya Golden Age (NOVEL)
XV. Saint Seiya French Comic will be coming soon
Some fans get confused as to which series is canon and which series is a spin-off in the Saint Seiya Multiverse. So I have done a lot of research, allow me to explain.
Start with Saint Seiya classic (114 Episodes) after that watch Saint Seiya The Hades Chapter Sanctuary (13 Episodes) after that watch Saint Seiya The Hades Chapter Inferno (12 Episodes) and after that watch Saint Seiya The Hades Chapter Elysion (6 Episodes) after that read Saint Seiya Next Dimension after that read Saint Seiya Episode Zero after that read Saint Seiya Origin and after that read Saint Seiya Destiny because these are canon these are written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada
The rest of the Spin-offs have been written and illustrated by separate authors.
Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas and Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas Gaiden are written and illustrated by Shiori Teshirogi
Saint Seiya Episode G, Saint Seiya Episode G Assassin and Saint Seiya Episode G Requiem are written and illustrated by Megumu Okada
Saint Seiya Saintia Shō is written and illustrated by Chimaki Kuori
Saint Seiya Omega, Saint Seiya Soul of Gold and Movies are made by Toei Animation
NETFLIX ORIGINAL Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya is made by Eugene Son
Saint Seiya Gigantomachia is written by Tatsuya Hamasaki
Saint Seiya Meio Iden Dark Wing is written and illustrated by Kenji Saito
Saint Seiya Golden Age is a work created as part of the celebration of the “30th anniversary of Saint Seiya"
Saint Seiya French Comic is written by Arnaud Dollen and illustrated by Jérôme Alquié, this Comic will be coming soon

Fun fact: the Italian dub of Saint Seiya is recognized as one of the luckiest incidents ever occurred in italian dub history. Basically the dub director was given considerable freedom in adaptation, that he used to completely turn over 99% of the dialogues, also giving the voices a more mature tone. From the original shonen action with almost ridiculous moments and dialogues (let's face it: Seiya is an ass), the italian dub is an EPIC tale about friendship and sacrifice that uses incredibly high-level language, quotes Dante Alighieri and has scenes of poetic tones that enchanted an entire generation of children.

Just a few errors I found here:
    - "There's no filler." Um, pretty much all the events between Ikki's defeat and Misty's arrival are filler, as well as those in between Aiolia coming to Japan and the Bronze Saints heading to Sanctuary (at least in the sense of not being part of the original manga) and it shows when many of them cause the plot to start going in circles in a back and forth for the Sagittarius Cloth. It also shows with how convoluted the Crystal Saint's inclusion caused Hyoga and Camus' relationship to become compared to the manga. The Asgard Arc is also entirely filler, though it at least does what few other filler arcs do and lead directly into canon events.
    - "We don't hear about those Bronze Saints because they died." They all appeared to help Tatsumi and Kiki protect Athena during the later segments of the 12 Zodiac Palaces Arc, as well as appear several times during the Hades Arc. Their relevance simply got shafted compared to the main 5 after the Galaxian Wars.
Also, the original's streaming on Netflix? Think that might only be in the US, since it's certainly not streaming in the UK. Can anyone confirm if they'll be bringing it over to other countries?

If you like classic Saint Seiya, check out these spin offs.
*Next dimension* a canon story written by the author, set during the last Holy war with Hades and then taking place in the future after Hades is defeated. Time travel is in this and Shun the new Virgo Gold Saint, goes into the past with some other Bronze to try and save the future, including a comatose seiya.
*Lost canvas* an anime about the last holy war with Hades but written by a new author. Not cannon to the main series but a really good watch or read. No time travel here, just a different Era with different heroes and villains.
*Santia Sho* This new author envisions a private force of female saints called "the santia" sworn to protect Athena alone and not adhere to the rules of Sanctuary. Whats cool about this manga/anime is how it takes place during and after the classic saint seiya series. Some retcons had to be made, like Saori knowing she was Athena from the start and Saga being possessed by a God but overall the look and feel of the show is like classic saint seiya. The protagonist is a girl named Shouko who is just as tough as any of the male bronze saints we have seen in the past. You'll see a lot of characters you love from the classic franchise too! Like for example Gold Saint Milo, he plays a big part in the story.
*Omega* Though it was ousted in this video as being a bad spin off, if you love the classic characters they all make returns here, especially in season 2. Wanna see phoenix Ikki look Badass showing off to the new generation of saints? Watch season 2. Want to see Gold Saint Seiya, Gold Saint Shiryu, Gold Saint Kiki? Watch season 2, the nostalgia and continuation of their stories will certainly delight you. Hopefully you can tolerate the new cast of Bronze saints. Should be noted that season 2 kind of retcons season 1's pokemon esq cosmos explanation.

And just for the Record, from all that came out as anime with Saint Seiya Branch, Saint Seiya Omega was the closest thing that we could get to the original series even if it wasn't that great.

There’s literally no one you can talk to about the series IRL, it’s incredibly hard to get your hands on, and you gotta be proficient with Google translate if you’re even gonna begin to understand the expanded lore in its entirety. Right now the only access I have to this show is the manga on Kindle and the shitty CGI Netflix remake.

So somehow our pinned comment disappeared? but im back with ANOTHER ONE!
So first off, I made a mistake, clearly the bronze saints in the galaxian wars aren't dead so thanks for letting us know. Also i wish i had said "was never big in the US" rather than in "the west." Gotta remember i'm a silly American who makes mistakes, honestly it's a shame though cause SO many people die in the show that if i had just not mentioned the bronze saints it would've been fine lol. However, it seems the majority of you enjoyed the video and were able to look past some small errors and see the big picture, that i freakin LOVED watching this show. Which is what this video was all about was wanting to share something i loved with people who either haven't been exposed to it, or love it as well. ALSO! i've gotten a lot of questions about the Bowling for Soup bit, First, i don't hate that song, what i hate is the "Americanization" early anime dubbers felt that they had to stuff into things and in 2003 when Seiya hit the US BFS was huge and using their cover of an 80's jam was an excellent example of "trying to draw kids in." it's commercialism that bums me out, not necessarily the song. Anyway, 11/16 is Full Metal Brotherhood so get HYPE!
Thanks for being cool dude neutrals,
    -Mike

Saint Seiya was one of the first continuous TV anime I watched back when. Our anime club was trading for episodes, and we were watching the raw rerun episodes, complete with commercials! (It's great to go from Seiya getting his head pounded into a mountainside to a commercial for cup noodles. And then a commercial from sponsor Bandai about the latest Saint Seiya action figures!) I saw it as a Japanese super hero team, and really got into the manga creator's take on Greek myths and legends, and their relationship to some Japanese counterparts. And the brutal, thrilling fight scenes didn't need any translation. AND Shaina was a tsundere girl before it became popular. (Passionate, violent, dedicated waifus forever!)

This was way better than I was expecting. You made a very through analysis and I hope this sells people on the show. I got a few notes, but they were probably already made by other comments. Good job!

The bronze saints did not die in the Galaxian wars, the in fact show up in the sanctuary to protect Saori while the bois go trough the houses.

In italy it was a true classic, famous for the dub where the character talked like knight from old time, in aulic and with quote from classic book like the Divine Comedy. Sometime I think we Italian loved the serie more than the japanese :D

"Antic quotes😀?" Even though I speak French, you made me want to watch Saint Seiya entirely in Italian (even though I'll never get used to "Isabel", "Tisifone" and "Castalia" 😂)

Just finished the original series on Netflix. The english dub is great and it looks so good in 720-1080p.

I'd argue it was bigger than Dragon Ball down here in Brazil. And I appreciate you shining a light upon my favorite series.

I was 5 years old when I watched Saint Seiya for the first time. More than 20 years later is still my favorite anime.

I'm currently watching the 1986 version and to me, it's amazing!!
Update: Finished 1986 Anime, Soul of Gold, and The Lost Canvas. Currently looking at Hades OVA. Question though! Should I watch Omega? I've been getting mixed views on the show.

Hi first time in your channel, very well done video, interesting to see the perspective of someone that didn't grew up with this Anime. Also it goes deeper than those 40ish episodes on Netflix, If you haven't I recommend you to watch them all, it gets better and better. To respond your question in some way, like I mentioned I grew up with this Anime and I learned a lot from it, there's a lot of lessons and deep connections with the charactes. Every personality brings something to the table. I remeber that even my dad recognized this Anime for his values and lessons beyond the violence. Good video keep it up.

I am from a part of the world where we owe it to 'Club Dorothée'@1989 to have brought us Saint Seiya as 'Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque'.
I mean, this Masterpiece deserves a proper acknowledgement as being part of the World's Cultural Heritage.
Episode 37, Shaina's sacrifice... just no other words than Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Masami Kurumada. Arigato. Arigato.
