  • Ahead of the World Cup, several organisations such as Russian Railways, Fifa and the Moscow Metro are conducting special training to teach their staff to be more polite and helpful to foreign visitors and, in particular, to smile more.
It is often said that Russians do not smile at strangers as much as their Western counterparts.
    Steve Rosenberg investigates.

Hello, it's me - Elnara Mustafina, psychologist from this video.
To be serious is the Russian habbit. Russians smile to people they know and rely. At the first meeting they usually say "Hello" with solemn face. Due to the fact that communication depends from the first impression, we teach train conductors to meet passengers with friendly attitude

Elnara Mustafina Hi Elnara I have a question to Me smiling or not smiling does not matter personally to Me as I feel that a persons actions speak more than their facial features (but it is nice to see people smiling because they are happy) it is part of the Russian culture to only smile at people you know personally and I would prefer to experience the Russian culture in its fullest. My concern is that is it true a smile raises suspicion with the police just because they are happy and smiling? That disturbs me.

Russians do smile, but only when they mean it. We don't smile at anything. We smile when we talk to someone we like, when we are happy.... We don't smile if we don't mean it. So if you meet a Russian and he smiled at you then you know he is actually happy to meet you and it is not a fake smile.....How many people smile when they talk to each other and then they turn around and stab each other in the back but Russian only smiles when he actually likes person he talks to and would like to call this person a friend. Welcome to Russia for FIFA 2018 - NO FAKE EMOTIONS HERE )))))))

I don't see that as something positive. First impressions are important so if I meet somebody that is not even able to do a friendly face when I just meet him/her, I won't be interested in breaking the ice with that person.

Which means you thought that the rest of the world doing fake smile the whole time? That's wrong! Our smile isn't fake, we just love strangers, we accept strangers, so that's why we smile to strangers, we don't just judge book by it's cover, we trust everybody, no matter if you're stranger, you're human too, just like us, we treat people the way we want to be treated

I went to Russia for the first time two years ago and I find that people who sound angry and look like they want to murder you are actually the nice guys.
Even the hotel staff at the very top hotels right across the Kremlin behave that way.
Only FSB agents, communists, and criminals actually smile in Russia. So people who sound friendly and smile are people that should be avoided.
It's the opposite of the west and former Western colonies.
Russia seems like a very weird and magical place to people that are not from the Soviet Union.
I wanted to buy the Soviet hats and propaganda posters but it's illegal to have them in my country (Indonesia).
      Overall I really like Russia.

It was near a communist day or something so there were communist in uniform marching on the red square with Stalin's portrait.
I didn't see any criminals in Moscow but there was plenty in ST Petersburg.
I grew up under a dictatorship so I can spot government agents quite easily. Back in the day, we had death squads everywhere so criminals and political dissenters were just killed without trial. ( Indonesia)
The one common factor is that regardless of the country, govt agents are bad at acting.
The country was overrun with Terrorists and terror cells after the transition to democracy so I know how to spot those too. At least now we have a democratically elected strongman who kills Terrorists and criminals without trial.

  • @mojokuku2745
    @mojokuku2745 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

It never really went into why Russians don't smile. What cultural difference has made smiling in public taboo?
For me personally as an American, smiling always felt unnatural. I remember as I child being told to smile more. I remember my great aunt pinching my cheeks saying "smile boy, it's good for your soul". Other people would often say "lets see those pearly whites" or physically using their fingers to force a smile on my face while pestered to fake a smile. Smiling for me always felt unnatural, and uncomfortable. I had to really strain my face to force a believable smile.
Even now as a full grown man people always say that I need to smile, that I always look pissed off. I get asked (usually via proxy through my wife, people rarely talk to me) if I'm mad or angry at someone, which is nearly as bad as being asked to fake a smile... On the inside I may be smiling or even laughing (rarely do that aloud either), but only people who truly know me can spot my subtle natural smile. It turns my stomach to fake a smile or a laugh or to watch others fake it for social acceptance.

Although I can imagine train conductors being taught how to behave including smiling, and I can also imagine a person being stopped in Russia by the police assuming she or he is high, I cannot relate to the group of people in the latest scene. Personally, I have seen tons of people in the streets smiling and groups of people having fun, while none of them were stopped and asked why the heck they were smiling/laughing. It's not that you have to attend some bullshit "laughter yoga" classes to have some giggles. This video is kind of giving a false perception. It is not in Russian mentality to smile all the time - true. But it's not (yet) a country, where you can get in trouble for expression of positive emotions.

This is absolutely kinda stereotype! I am from Russia and nobody can stop me if I am smiling, except if you laugh or smile in a way like these people in this yoga class do, as locals could really think that you are crazy or drunk. And, surely you could find lots of people smiling while walking in the streets of Russia.

I think this is not propaganda. It's like that in my country too. People don't feel under pressure to appear pleasant. Also life is tough. So people are worried. They walk around with their serious, worried faces. It's just how it is. They have serious discussions about how things are bad. About jobs and financial problems and that kind of stuff, politics, the future... People are worried about the future. Sometimes also, people get lost in thought, and they don't feel bad about their faces suddenly loosing expression. It's perfectly normal to grin at everyone you see. People that are very happy and too nice, most other people find them weird, and like, what the hell is your problem, suspicious... It just looks fake. Like the person has some kind of agenda.
It's a cultural thing. If someone in America was walking around looking that serious, they would offend people and make them feel uncomfortable. Who knows, maybe, it's good to fake it sometimes :)
