  • Nobel Prize writer Svetlana Alexievich has interviewed hundreds of people in Russia for her upcoming book about love. In these excerpts, Alexievich tries to find out why Russian culture seems to be so uncomfortable with the concept of happiness and explores the possibility of living a full life without ever being in love.
Excerpts from the film Lyubov - Love in Russian by Staffan Julén and Svetlana Alexievich

I know plenty of happy Russians. I think this is a bit of a stereotype. Although cocaine is probably harder to come by in Russia.

We know how to fun, but be happy so far from have fun... You can't just be happy if you always have fun... For real happyness you must grieve well sometimes... Without feeling bad you can't feel good.
I wasting my time on a computer games and it's fun but i can't be happy because i... Because i just waste time! I do nothing to make my dreams come true, i don't improving myself... Some of my comrades, as i understand, feel like this too.

It is filosofy work of Svetlana on the subject: "What is love?". How she can write about emotions which she never felt? To write book by woman "What feel the man" will have the same true. People in Russia don't love less than in other countries, but they are more truly in their feelings. They will never say:" I am happy, everything is great", if there is not. It is difference. But it is nothing connected with love. Mentality of Europe countries is to in any difficult situation try to smile and always say :" Everything is great". It is not happiness, it is style of behavior. And people in Russia always try to share their happiness and pain with their close people and friends. I see here more love than in frases "I am great", "Everything is perfect" and ect. But will be interesting to read this book.

A Pole myself, I fully understand the whole happiness thing. I think the problem is in words. We of course can be happy, smiling, laughing, having a good time etc. What she means by "happiness" is IMHO "being successful/fulifilled and feeling it's deserved". So basically it's about living without the stigma of imperfection, showing with one's life that a heaven is possible here. But it goes against our religious traditions (and history). We are to suffer, and we will, and we even should. Suffering is dignity. Life is suffering. So happiness - in the sense I'm talking about - seems suspicious, immoral, stupid. And with the whole media schtick of showing people who are happy because they've purchased something, it's in a way natural to lean towards suffering as a more noble, thoughtful way of living. However, I can't forget the Book of Job. He, after the whole ordeal God ahd put him thru, was rewarded not with heaven but with a new and successful life. I mean - the lesson here should be "you have the right to be happy, and happy about it - even though it won't last." But still.

Well the answer is clear. We are not so keen on taking happy pills like people in the west. We see life as it is and not through the pink glasses. Read bible. Life is a journey, filled with struggles. In a way it is a test. We dig deeper. Read about russian sole. But to be honest this video is not special. You find that kind of conversations near each house where grandmothers sit and talk.

No wonder Russians are realistic and that the concept of happiness has faded away in their mindset, since they have been through a lot in the course of their history, I can say they had the most hardships of all nations in the history of the planet, they lost so many people and they are proud that they have endured it and still survived.
Their mindset is accustomed to suffering and enduring hardships, and they will always fight trough anything until the very last atom of energy.

The Russian literature does not help if you are looking for happiness. It is the main part of the heritage that keeps on pulling Russian backward to a psychological and philosophical attitude towards life that is depressing. You got a lock on deep literature, but be careful of what you wish for: It is a double-edged sword. Unless Russian literature break with Russian literary tradition, you will keep on reproducing literature that may be great, but one-sided, i.e, deeper and deeper towards the abyss. Create frivolous literature for a change.

Asfor 'happiness' it's for children isn't it? That's why adolescence is so hard, when happiness starts to be replaced by stress and anxiety, and people start to drink and take drugs.
Doctors think it depends on pharmaceutical drugs, anti depressants and so on.
No one can tell you how to live, you have to figure it out yourself but if you spend it chasing happiness you might find it's a chimera.
Anyway the Russian president wants to abolish happiness altogether, even for children..

They just want to be left alone with their drink. I also have a friend who is Dutch-American and he's miserable most of the time, the only relationship he has that can be considered close to love or happiness is to his glass of vodka. 😂 People love their alcohol.

Brain scans and chemical analysis seem to indicate that there are three physical systems of love, each with its separate neural pathways, separate region of the brain, and different brain hormone activated and dispersed. Buddhism two and a half millennia ago discussed unhappiness and said it offered a cure. Here, our ex cold war enemies bare their souls to offer a window into our shared humanity.

In modern Russia, a popular trend has recently become that our country is poor and squalid and "it's time to get out of here." Everyone blames the almost authoritarian government, corruption, and simply the fact that everything is "bad"in our country. Today we will try to consider the advantages of living in Russia according to foreigners who have visited Russia and Russian emigrants who have been living abroad for a long time.
The Russian Federation is a huge country. Naturally, the standard of living in Moscow and Saint Petersburg differs from that of Novosibirsk or Krasnodar and Saratov. Nevertheless, the life of every Russian is a weekday with its own troubles and long-awaited weekends. Well, let's look at the advantages of life in our country through the eyes of our emigrants, just foreigners and migrants working here.
    Public transport
For certain historical reasons, public transport in Russia is one of the most developed in the world. Both large and small cities in Russia have lines of city buses, trams, and trolleybuses. Bus transport between small towns and villages is highly developed. The Russian metro is one of the best in the world, and it's not just in Moscow. This applies, at least, to its cleanliness and operation in General. For example, in the same United States, public transport is very poorly developed, and the metro either works intermittently, or it is impossible to stay in it. In Western countries, it is impossible to imagine everyday life without a car. Although this trend is now gaining momentum in Russia. Here are the statistics: In Russia, as of July 1, 2019, there are 306 passenger cars per one thousand inhabitants.
    Free education and medicine
No matter how much dirt and lies are poured on our country, there are free kindergartens in Russia where parents pay only for food, free schools, and free libraries. They are the majority, because the education system in Russia is state-owned and is not planted with a huge number of private schools and kindergartens, as in the United States. For the most part, medical care is provided free of charge, and ambulance services in Russia are completely free of charge. In Russia, the population undergoes free medical examination and in principle does not pay even for the same x-ray, except if you went to a private clinic. Russian medicine has many haters, even among its population, who complain about waiting lists and say: "but abroad... But there they are treated better and in General, the medicine is better...". Although, if they ever got sick in the same USA or another country, they would decide that it would be better to sit in line. In Western countries, the "best" medicine that does not slip from the lips of our fans of everything "foreign" is available to a narrow circle of people who have a wide purse. About medicine in some countries of Asia, Latin America, and even more so, Africa-it is better to keep silent.
    The Internet
In Russia, many cafes and eateries, parks and squares, and even public transport, have free Internet. But, many Western cities-such can not boast. Or it is, but the Internet speed is low. In Russia, the Internet is very fast and very cheap. In Russia, you will have enough 1 thousand rubles to enjoy high-speed Internet and there will be no restrictions, such as all sorts of packages, after the exhaustion of which, you will have to buy a new one to return to the original speed. Many will talk about punishments for various statements and misinformation on the Internet. But Russia is not the only one here, even in Germany, the lights of democracy - there are such restrictions. And Russia will definitely not reach the level of China. It has already formed its own Internet culture and the state media, government agencies and the economy as a whole are tied to the Internet.
    Delicious food
In Russia, very tasty products, as they are grown on farms. In Russia, the culture of fast food is not so widespread, and cooking at home is a whole culture, tradition and ritual. And, say, in the West, people eat in a diner, and at home they rarely cook food, but heat it in the microwave, namely, purchased semi-finished products. If in Russia, semi-finished products have more natural origin, then abroad, as the foreigners themselves claim, they are tired of unnatural food. And in the same China, there are doubts about the naturalness of products. But, about dairy products in the countries of the West and East, you can generally write a separate article.

The nature of life is that everything will perish.
Knowing God created the world and into him you will return. Knowing life is a test will give you peace. Being grateful for what you have will give you happiness.

If you believe in achievement and purpose you carry a heavy load Guilt from religions do this too you must feel you owe people something unrealistically . If happiness comes it isn't going to be effort that makes it happen Taoism isn't a religion and is only a chronicle of human lives for the sake of wisdom alone It states that 'your way that is weighable isn't your real way.' that if you make an effort to do something you are lying to yourself Some quotes release effort this way "Scatter things and then you will gather them' Because in nature you cannot force yourself with effort usually without paying to some extent for your physical effort. "A good traveler isn't concerned to get there' because you make no effort you have more energy if you are present . If your house is empty you are useful if your house is full you are not useful because if empty you can be yourself and not worry about measurements . Taoism actually came from Trypillia a female based society before the Egyptians many years. They were an agricultural society who went to different societies around them for wisdom and some of these quotes are that old. Taoism believes we rotate even should there be an after existence Another quote is ' if you keep doing what you are doing you might get there' which does give repose . Tao doesn't believe in force of effort due it causes you stress and only hurts others unnecessarily Example if you enjoy hurting others the Tao believes we are babies in the womb even after death That should you enjoy hurting other's it would be you you would hurt They believe we are deaf , dumb and blind to nature and the essence of life However if you knew where the seed of life goes your genius. When people have died also they always state they are in the dark and see perhaps loved ones a light or lights yet always in the dark. This is like the Mother who keeps her babies in her womb and so are we to the Tao. If it were true that you have enemies in an after life in Tao that enemy if cruel and hurtful would only hurt themselves .

Russians are among the most generally kind and loving people I've ever met in my life. As many wise men have noted, nothing flees your grasp quicker when you try to grab it than "happiness". We are made in the image of God, Who is a Trinity. In other words, at the root of all reality there is unselfishness. As St. Paul said Christ taught "It is better to give than to receive." The Orthodox Church and Saints teaches us how to live this way

Aleksandr Ivanov I will not dare to lecture a Russian on his own literary history, but depending on your age, I would expect you to agree (also on a global scale) that communism has brought wall-to-wall misery everywhere it has been tested.
Going back to Mother Russia, there is perhaps a melancholy in your spirit and some of your literature has depicted it, thus reinforcing. I’ve sometimes wondered if it was the climate, the land, history or a combination of these. Any thoughts?

There are psychological reasons for any aggression. And if the behavior is repeated, if a certain pattern of behavior is observed generation after generation, there must be an explanation. As you know, every nation has certain patterns of sexual behavior due to genetics. Someone by nature has a strong potency, someone has a weaker potency, this is transmitted by certain genes. The question is why Russian women send men away from themselves, and Ukrainian women follow their men to war, hold on to men to the last. Why do Russians need to prove something to someone all the time, it's like a demonstration of a penis. And the Ukrainians are fine, they have no need to show off at all. Look at tiktok, Ukrainian soldiers are either dancing or joking or playing with animals, i.e. Ukrainians do not have a factor of some kind of inferiority, they never need to prove anything, they just kill in cold blood. I'm trying to explain in purely scientific language. I looked at the statistics, the length of the penis is almost the same for Russians and Ukrainians, but the volume of the penis is much larger of Ukrainians.

    To everyone who reads comments.
I read all the comments below and I am the 100 th comment.
You came here to find out about happiness or give advice.
I have some advice that may help you.
    1. Happiness is fleeting because is is based on luck. Look up the word it is hapless, by chance.
    God's Joy
To live in the Creator's Joy is not luck or fleeting.
Yes it is in a Christian book but the Creator created you and it speaks to all that will read it.
    2. Vitamin D deficiency causes extreme depression.
So dose, B complex deficiency and vitamin C deficiency.
    3. Liver related depression caused by deficiency and causes depression.
    4. SAM-e helps make the 40,000 neurotransmitters that are used in the brain the heart and the gut.
SAM-e repairs joint function, liver function, and improves mood.
SAM-e replaces all 40,000 neurotransmitters so that your brain in your heart work correctly. You will think more clearly and feel more affinity towards situations.
SAM-e repairs DNA damage at 12 to 1600 mg.
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE WITH FOLIC ACID.
Make sure you read up on it. Take it before bed, and do not operate machinery.
I know from personal experience this works, as I've used it on myself, and I helped others with it, and I hope to help you with it now.
I am not a doctor but I hope this works for you cuz it did for me.

If they refrained from invading other countries, perhaps they would experience greater happiness. This is a minor point, but one on which we can all agree - aggression does not lead to happiness. It is unfortunate that the Russians appear to be lagging behind the modern world, which is quite embarrassing.
