  • Has it really been a whole decade since I uploaded my first railway video to TH-cam? It bloomin' well has! So, let's celebrate by taking a look back at 10* particularly special moments from these last 10 years.
*It's actually 11, but 10 works better with the title, so shhh!
This anniversary video features one shot from each year I've been doing this, in chronological order. It uses shots filmed on all four of the main camcorders I've used, so the quality is a little dubious near the beginning, but I hope you enjoy it! Below is a brief summary of each shot, describing what makes them so special to me.
2009: This was one of those pure luck shots. While on holiday in North Wales, we made our way to Tywyn Station, where I had planned to film Standard 4MT No.76079 working 'The Cambrian', on her way to Porthmadog. We must have left rather late, or got caught in traffic though, as we approached the station just as 76079 was arriving. We then decided to take a chance on a pacing shot along the road which parallels the line out of Tywyn, as far as the River Dysynni. We were fortunate, as the road was completely clear, giving us a free run along the whole mile and a quarter stretch. An incredible experience, which I have never been able to repeat.
2010: The Swindon & Cricklade Railway's 'GWR 175' gala is a favourite of mine in the list of events I've attended during the last 10 years. Topping off an already stellar day was a cavalcade, which saw the railway's two resident locos, 'Slough Estates No.3' and 'Salmon' - now since moved onto pastures new - joining guest locos 4612, 5542, 3717 'City of Truro' and 5322 on a southbound run along the whole line. I was set up at Blunsdon, where I was treated to an awesome display of whistles and noise, as the cavalcade blasted its way towards the end of the line.
2011: The location atop Sapperton Tunnel is one of my favourite places to film, with a fantastic view of trains working hard, snaking their way along the reverse curves on the stiff climb up Sapperton Bank. I have always loved this particular shot, as it has such a wonderful atmosphere, I think. The sound of Bittern's Crosby chime whistle echoing through the Golden Valley on her approach just makes my ears melt.
2012: The famous shot at Sydney Gardens in Bath is another top location, for me. Few shots have left me feeling absolutely buzzed after filming them. This was one of them. Working her final main line railtour before withdrawal for overhaul, 6024 'King Edward I' comes hammering through in one of the most awesome displays of power I've ever witnessed. No shot of mine at Sydney Gardens has ever come close to this.
2013: To this day, the most spectacular performance I've ever filmed up Hemerdon Bank, 'nuff said.
2014: After an utterly miserable first half of the day, missing my first shot, then getting on the wrong train from Newton Abbott, this was a sight for sore eyes. I had always wanted to film a Castle powering out of Kingswear. I certainly never expected to get it this time, until a good friend of mine, David Oldham, offered me a lift with him to film the return working of this Torbay Express run. With the exception of the tide being out, it was everything I could have hoped for and I'm extremely grateful for David allowing me to join him to film it.
2015: This is another shot I love because of the atmosphere, as 4464 'Bittern' gently gallops her way up the climb to Medstead, topping off what was a very enjoyable day at the Mid Hants Railway's spring steam gala for that year.
2016: Back at the MHR again, this shot features 4MT No.76017 and 9F No.92212 double heading a non-stop Pines Express run through Ropley. While the whole package itself was pretty incredible, it's the savage noise made by the 9F as they passed me that does it. It made my spine tingle!
2017: Pure Great Western perfection in absolutely stunning light. What else do I need to say?
2018: Quite possibly the most thrilling shot I've captured in the last decade, by one of my favourite locos no less, 35028 'Clan Line'. Again, it's one of those shots which gave me such an amazing rush of excitement in the moment, as Clan Line blitzes the eastbound climb to Whiteball Tunnel.
2019: Some would consider this quite a low-key shot to end on, compared to the others. You'd be right, however, it's one that brings me no end of joy whenever I watch it. 7714, on a rake of MK1s, charging up Eardington Bank in the peaceful evening light is my idea of perfection, I can think of nothing else that I'd rather be filming.
Huge thanks to my family and friends who have helped and supported me throughout the last decade, as well as to the countless number of railway staff and volunteers who work so hard to maintain and operate all the wonderful locomotives, railways and rolling stock that I've had the joy of capturing on camera. Without them, I'd have nothing to film!
Lastly, to you the viewer. Thank you, so very much!

Kris, a wonderful compilation with stunning shots throughout, also cleverly edited with a great introduction and superb transitions. I have read your most eloquent description and normally I would turn away from picking my own favourites, BUT my enjoyment of this leads me to pick out: 2014 for the all-round setting, 2015 for the graceful extended scene and 2018 for its sheer drama. Thank you, Bob.

Dear God, has it really been ten years? How much of my time has been absorbed watching your clips in the past decade? Does this make me crazy? Oh well then, "Let Madness Begin"!!!!!🍻

Many thanks for your kind words, David! I'm glad you enjoyed it. There was definitely a great deal of umming and ahhing, although some shots were easier to choose than others ;)

Congratulations on 10 (11?) years on TH-cam! Your quality, even 10 years ago, is superb! I don't know how you sifted through countless hours of video clips from each year, but what you have produced is superb! 💖🚂 Here's hoping you can continue to get around Britain (and maybe further afield?) and record more rail action in the year ahead, while keeping up with technology! 👏👏

Wonderful selection of shots. Thanks for sharing your excellent work on TH-cam. Here is to another 10 years.
The Pines Express was something else. I witnessed one of the runs from Ropley and travelled on another. The 9F thought she was back on the S&D. Awesome display of power from 92212.

@@SpeedToTheWest no, definitely not. I love the slightly uneven exhaust beat of them. Talking of black panniers, it shouldn't be long before 9681 comes back to the DFR!
