    Hi :) I got an A at AS English and am predicted A* at A2. I just went through the books chapter by chapter, using York notes, websites (cross ref-it is great if you haven't tried it, as is 'mrhoyesibwebsite' and just getting everything I can from them. I then highlighted according to the AOs and used a different colour pen to star each key theme. I also made a mind map of critics' quotes, context and genres (e.g. Jane Eyre is Gothic, so I spent a few hours researching Gothicism) - this really enhanced my analysis. The main thing near the end of the year is essay practice - the best way of learning the quotes is using them. Hope this helps :)

      don't do large amounts of revision, short and in chunks is the best way and make sure u get proper rest, don't go into exams hungry and do lots of past papers - if its language, just revise key vocab, u can find the specification language vocab on google for examboards! i hope this helped in some form and i wish u the best of luck!!

    Great video, Eve! I'm reading English Lit. at Oxford and even I find it hard to revise for so don't worry.😂 The BEST thing I find though is essay plans! Gather together as many past papers as you can and plan your answers for the questions (eventually you'll find yourself having to make up your own qs), including quotes, critics and context. Then learn the info. from that plan! I find myself remembering quotes/critics/context without needing to look them up the more plans I do! Nearer to the exams I make plans without looking anything up and THEN I look stuff up to improve my plan😊 Hope this makes sense and helps!!xxx

    With English lit (GCSE though) I do a summary for each chapter, mindmaps for character or a summary for each chapter - this includes general quotes for them and the quote in which they were introduced to the novel-, I also write down key quotes to remember and make them look all pretty. As I do all of this I write down questions on postik notes and stick them on the relevant pieces of paper. I have a folder for lit revision and separate each novel and poetry etc by dividers

    Personally, reading and writing is my life, so writing essays on books for English Lit comes really naturally to me. What I did at AS was I got a sheet of A4 and split it into the different assessment objectives (I'm not sure if your school works the same as mine, but it's ideas, language & structure, context and critical interpretations) I would write down the most important parts in each section for each text that was on the syllabus. Reading around your text is also really helpful. Practicing writing essays in timed conditions. When writing essays, topic sentences are a great way to structure your essays so you don't feel like you're waffling. So, you would create 3/4 topic sentences to answer the question. I would practice essays by just making topic sentences with bullet points for context, quotes and critical interpretations to see how much I could write in response to the question. I also made flashcards for the different themes in the texts with quotes to memorise on the other side. It's strange when it comes to revising for English Lit because there isn't much you can study but try re-reading passages, memorise quotes, make sure you have enough information in your essays to hit the assessment objectives and try to link your ideas together in your essay, and fluency is really important. Sorry this was so long, hope I was of some help!

      I'm doing GCSE history and normally make mind maps from dates e.g. one from 1800-1900 and on a topic e.g. medicine through time and then memorise from that instead of my book and I'm working at a A* grade 😊

    • @jerrygolden2133
      @jerrygolden2133 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Megan Cole I got an A at GCSE History and I revised by writing down all the key events for each exam e.g for the Cold War I wrote out Cuban Missile Crisis, Berlin Blockade all down the side of one piece of paper and then photocopied it about 10 times so I could keep rewriting dates and it helped them stick. Also it's good to make mindmaps of key people and what they enforced

    • @aaronbrooks9992
      @aaronbrooks9992 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For my depth study (Nazi Germany), I create mind maps and flash cards on the main events. I then expand what I have into topics, for example: I'll make mind maps on the creation of Strength Through Joy and outline what it was, who it benefitted etc. etc. and then make a mind map on how the Nazi's rebuilt Germany's economy, and list the creation of Strength Through Joy, so I am aware of what it actually done.
      For my breadth study (I think that's what it is called), I make a clear divide in the three topics we cover: Disease and Infection, Surgery and Anatomy and Public Health. I think it is very important to have a divide in the topics, as that is how the exam works. I am in the process of just rewriting my notes from school into neater, easier to read notes in a notebook. But I make flashcards on individuals (including dates, discoveries, progress it made, or progress it hindered) ((I think it's good to get dates of birth, how many books they wrote etc. as extra information - it really impresses the examiner)). I use a lot of past papers for my breadth study, as it allows me to identify factors in the easiest way possible as well as getting a trial exam.
      Hope this helped! I'm working at a consistent A* :)

      @emilybaker4559 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Megan Cole lots of essay plans! Start making essay plans by looking at your notes and what it says on online markschemes, then make them without looking at your notes. Same with the amount of detail you include; start making detailed plans then you'll end up with just a few bullet points that you need to write the essay!

  • @AlexandraBrooke
    @AlexandraBrooke 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got an A at AS in English Lit and I mainly focused on practicing close reading and exam answers as well as being able to track key themes/issues in the text and how they progress with the narrative. Memorising key quotes is also quite useful, particularly with closed book exams, and I found that it's best to build up your own bank of quotes that you could apply to literally any exam question. I found Litcharts quite useful for identifying key quotes and themes and in preparation for the exam I would find a quote and then mindmap everything I could say about it but making sure it was linked to the assessment objectives. I think enjoying the texts that I was studying was also key as it meant that I understood everything much better and was more willing to do extra work xx

    English lit is easy to revise, just make mind maps for each chapter of significant events that happened. Link common ideas, highlight quotes stuff like that. Then write a summary and analysis for each mind map- then say if you revise 7 chapters over the week you then have rough notes, a summary so the book is clear in your head and the analysis counts as a mock essay!

    I got an A at English Lit AS this year and what I did was make mind maps of each scene so you have an idea of the story line and what followed and where everything occurred and then I'd make 'model answers' for each theme and character. So I'd take into account the different aos for each text and then make a model answer based on that. So for example, with Streetcar, I would pick a quote to do with a theme/character, then do ao2 (analysis) as the main part and then either pick out a dramatic/literary interpretation i.e. what they did in a recreation of streetcar (play, film etc) or a Marxist (feminist, hyper-masculinity etc) view and then if i could find context to expand the quote. That way, you ensure you have covered everything you need to and you're not just doing ao2 but you need to make sure, especially for literature, that you are aware of the aos and what percentage they are as they're usually dependent on the text. I hope this helps someone.

    I'm not sure about the English exam situation but here in Ireland you should PACK your English essays with personal response! Anyone doing the LC, you will be hugely rewarded if you fill your essay up with how you felt about it and how it affected you and your experience with whatever it is you're talking about. I pack my essays (poetry, comparative, narrative, personal, EVERYTHING) full of personal response and I've never gotten bellow 90% in an essay. Hope this helps someone :')

    • @theessenceofbeauty1g
      @theessenceofbeauty1g 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charlene Williams I would say to make sure you know your quotes really well and also know your theme and literary devices. JC is nowhere near as precise as the LC so once you have the buzzwords (sibilance, onomatopoeia etc) and examples of them you should be good to go. Also, if you're doing a narrative for your personal essay, I'd definetly recommend staying well away from the typical action story. The examiner will probably be sick to death of reading them. Try write an emotional, unique story if you can! I hope this helps xx

    I got an A* in a level English lit. I tended to start revision by making soooo many mind maps (also good for making connections with other texts). So you could do one mind map on each theme in the text (which you can sort of judge from the exam spec). Flash cards for quotes. But definitely most helpful thing was doing as many essay plans/ timed essays as possible, even if it's just writing the introduction instead of the whole thing it really helps. Good luck x

    I got an A at English Lit AS last year and honestly struggle to revise as much as you. For English lit it's all about knowing the exam and the amount of weighting each assessment objective has on your marks and then learning how to hit them. Best way I found was to do a mind map of a possible exam question with relevant points, quotations, context, critical quotations and interpretations (like post colonialism and the different waves of feminism). But yeah revising English lit is the biggest pain in the adds because it takes ages to get a broad understanding of the text which is what your exam wants you to show you have...... good luck 😊😊😊😊

    Hi, I got an A in Alevel English Lit and I just started my first year of English at Uni so I have a few tips for you. I didn't really revise much because I'm lazy, but the best thing you can do is re read the texts MULTIPLE TIMES and watch any productions of them several times. If you need to learn quotes, link them by themes and get started now. The more quotes you have the bigger your advantage really, you can get by knowing a few but the more niche the quote is the better you look. Look at past exam papers to see the sorts of things they're asking and write down anything or any type of question that comes up alot and go over that. Good luck !!

    When I studied English Lit I mainly focused on essay writing and found as many past questions as I could and wrote plans for all of them and wrote out answers for some. This helped with remembering quotes and key parts of the novels as that's what I included in the plans. I also used mind maps for each of the chapters of each novel and noted down key quotes or any events which I thought were important or useful :) x

    I write my quotes on little q cards and also on normal A4 paper along with the analysis and then I literally sit re writing the quotes out for ages until I know them completely. It really helps me I have to memories 6+ quotes for 6 different poems and also for Romeo and Juliet

    Hi! I got an A at A2 in English and I'm doing my degree in English lit now and something I found really helpful is to set out an essay structure that could work with nearly any question and find a way to apply different questions to that essay structure. I also try to find quotes that can fit with a number of different question topics. One thing I would recommend more than anything is read the spec and the mark schemes and do your own mock essays under timed conditions. I hope that helps!! :)

    I took my A Levels last year and English is hard to revise for however the best thing I found was to do essay plans and make quotation lists based on themes (eg, when I did 'Hamlet', I made a list for religion, grief etc.) English Literature is highly thematic and based on arguments and analysis, so this is probably the best use of time! Best of luck!

      Also read critics - it's a new way to approach texts and is more interesting than just reading over your own notes all the time

      Also also for learning Chaucer, definitely read the quotations aloud. See if you can find someone reading the Prologue and Tale you're studying aloud even on TH-cam, download the MP3 and listen to it when you're on a bus or in the car or walking somewhere. It's so much about the rhythm and if you learn the pronunciation, you'll learn the spelling. It's good to remember a simple version of the story though and they have the 'Chaucer Animated Tales' somewhere on TH-cam, which are a bit silly, but a great simplifier for remembering the story!

    For English lit, I like to take pages and have one page per character where I can explore the themes they demonstrate, how they do this through quotes and then analyzing the quotes and also how they contrast to other characters or link to other areas of the book. Making these pages can really help, but for quick revision I just use revision card. I also watch the movies/ tv shows of the book so I remember the book visually.

    For me Chaucer was an extract question so I sat with my teacher and went through a sh*t tone of extracts and focused on how to approach the question in the time.
    Another big thing is themes (marriage, women etc.) and obvs how the characters are presented by the Merchant. You seem to be doing great so far Eve!!
    Seriously I was no where near that organised in AS and came out with an A- you will do great!!!!

    Hey eve I am in year 13 and doing English lit, my main tip for revising is to split the quotes into themes and write and analyse say 7/8 quotes on that particular theme. I also went through context and wrote one side of a4 on everything you can say about context basically aha but I did it in bullet points. Also, I would recommend doing a 1/2 sentence summary for eacH chapter of the novels so you can quickly refer back to chapters in exams xxx if you have anymore tips let me know as I could do with some too!!

    i also don't really know how to revise for english lit but something i do is every time i revise i create a list of questions (usually based on what i just revised) to answer the next time i revise. that way i can see if my revision was effective and i know what i'm confident with and what i need to go over

    I got an A for my AS in English lit and the thing that helped me most was to do practise timed essay paragraphs on the texts i felt i wasn't as good at and handed them in to be marked, (doing full practice essays took to long and is really boring!). Also its really helpful to find other essays past students have done and highlight/annotate them to get other analysis and ideas. Finding critics responses to the texts online is really helpful, generally for English gathering as much info and analysis as possible to incorporate into your own essays is really useful. Good luck!x

    I do English Lit at A2 (I got an A at AS) and I basically revised by making a mind map for each scene/ big moment in the play/novel, rather than doing it thematically or by character. For each mind map i'd do little mind maps for the themes/characters in that scene and i found it so much easier to handle!! Think about the text by moments rather than ideas, it will help so much!! Good luck Eve, love your videos☺️💗

    Try making mindmaps for English of key themes, and then points and quotes, and then get someone to help you learn them and test them on quotes. My dad did this with me the day before my exam and somehow managed to drop 2 marks on the exam so I guess that worked!

    Hello! I got an A at AS English Lit and am currently doing A2. For poetry I re-annotate all of the poems and then make comparison pages per theme and link all of the poems with the same theme! Then for prose I select about 10 key quotes per character and per theme and write them in a note book or on a poster. For all: prose, play and poetry I make a list of all possible essay questions. Say there are 5 essay question per text I plan all 5 and write out 3 in timed conditions to get my teacher to grade! I hope this helps x

    English lit I do the same as you, learn quotes and analyse them, nearer the mock or exam I revise by planning out answers to questions that could come up which also forces me to remember the material I've learnt so I can see my weak spots. Thank you for this video 💛🌟

    I took English Literature for AS level, and it was definitely one of the hardest to revise for, but I got an A in the end! I found that reading the books were really useful, or even just a few chapters, where you're focusing on one particular thing e.g. a character, or an issue, like gender. Reading the books from different perspectives and focusing on one thing rather than trying to remember everything that could possibly come up in an exam helps you to see things that you perhaps didn't before. Mind maps were also really useful - making them for specific characters, issues etc. Something we did a lot on class was making lists of all the different questions that might come up in the exam, and then planning answers for them - where would you go in the book to find them, quotes you might want to use, what key points would you do etc. Then if you have the time, write practice essays. Tons of them. Get your teacher to look at them (this is probably too late for mocks, but for the real thing it will be so so helpful) and soon you'll have a bank full of strong paragraphs you can refer to when revising in the future! I hope this was useful! x
