Changing a Diesel Fuel Filter: Westerbeke 4-107 & older Perkins 4-108

  • Today we are looking at replacing the fuel filter on our diesel Perkins/Westerbeke 4-107 and may be applicable to the older 4-108 with the canister filters. However, most older diesels are similar. This is on my boat but can also be applicable to tractors too :)
I provide a couple of hacks to making the replacement easier. One s to use a plastic bag over the filter during removal to catch any fuel from spilling. The second hack is to be sure that the "O" ring gasket does not cover the fuel outlet holes on the filter. This is a common mistake. Also be sure that the "O" ring gaskets are properly seated and do not over tighten the filter assembly.
I also go over bleeding the fuel system....the fuel return nut on the filter housing, low and high pressure side of the injector pump, and fuel injector supply nut. It's all about chasing the air out.
I know this can be an intimidating project but here should make it a bit more straight forward. Generally, this is less than a half day project depending upon access and mess :)

Great information! Instead of an electric pump I had added a regular outboard motor hand primer bulb in line from the gas tank. If I remember correctly, I only had to bleed the connections to the filter (and the filter) by loosening them and manual controlling the bleeding as I tighten them (top last).

That is a great way of doing it and less "parts" to go wrong. I just didn't have the reach around to pump and bleed. ;)

How did you get the Edelbrock electric fuel pump to pump Fuel because they have to be gravity fed I bought two of them before I do you have an app for the manual fuel pump or before

Good question! Yes, it is gravity feed as my fuel tank is higher. The big Racor filter and Edelbrock fuel pump are the lowest points of my fuel system. Often, these small pumps have to be "primed" by siphoning off the air. This can be done by connecting it to the fuel source and putting your finger over the outlet on and off to create a suction. Air is compressible while the fuel is not. Got to bleed the air out...super important with diesel systems. Also, I just use it for bleeding air from the systems and not all the time because the pressure created could blow the high-pressure injector pump seals out.
