SV Ramble On | Changing the Fuel Filter and Installing a New Electric Pump

  • This is our final fuel filter upgrade video. We changed the secondary fuel filter on the engine and added an electric pump to assist in bleeding the fuel lines. Then we tracked down all the bleeding screws on the engine and finally got all the air out of the system. Below are some links we referenced for this project.

Thanks for that. Will give me a little more confidence when I try to change the fuel filter on my perkins at the start of the boating season!

I found a fuel filter conversation kit from Foley Engines that looks very interesting.

If it's the same one we saw a few years ago, it wouldn't fit our engine with the transmission cooler in the way.

@@svrambleon That means it probably won't fit mine as well. I have the same exact motor. Is that a Walker Airsep you have on there?

That's what I like about the gravity tank you just open each one till it flows out and start!

Thanks for posting the video. The engine mounted fuel filter, mechanical lift pump, and manual priming pump weren't thoughtfully designed. I replaced mine with a two stage Racor filter/water separator and an electric pump similar to the one you have. The filter and pump are detached from the engine and are not affected by the vibration. Haven't had a leak since...and filter changes have become a breeze! Boat safe!

That's the problem with Perkins diesels. They took a tractor engine and plugged it into a sailboat, added a raw water cooling system and a heat exchanger. Not much thought invested into the fuel filtration before it gets to the injectors other than the onboard secondary. The electric fuel pump I installed helps with bleeding the main filter, but I think the primaries in parallel are going to make it a helluva lot easier for on the move filter changes. Thanks for watching.

@@svrambleon my previous Nissan was a ute motor and my current Cummins 3.3l also a truck engine. It always depends on who does the marine conversions

And you did it again. No, not the fuel filter.
Your pump install created a "Duh" moment when I saw how you mounted the switch.
I installed a new engine bay light fixture that has no internal switch.
I bought the same switch that you used for your pump, without a flange.
I have been puzzling for days how to mount it in the bay.
And now I know. Thanks, as always.
BTW, You must have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express recently! ;8>)

Glad that sparked an idea for your engine room light switch. I actually used part of that same aluminum angle for the switch mount on the DIY fuel polisher back when I cleaned out the tank. Thanks again for watching. Love the Holiday Inn Express reference!

The design engineer who thought that fitting was a good idea needs to fit those filters for eternity, says retired engineer.

    Another great video, thanks.
Can you share a link to the electric pump please? Did you use the pump for all the airbleeding work? Does the pump get hot when it is not being used, but being in circuit it would be activated in a passive mode?

Thanks Ralph, but posting links always end up in internet dead-ends and frustration. I got this one (and the one I used for the fuel-polishing system) on Amazon. I chose Carter pumps because they're a well-known name in fuel pumps, and then picked the size according to the required flow based on the manufacturers' data sheet. A little research goes a long way.....

It was a Carter inline 12 volt fuel pump from Amazon, but any 12 volt fuel pump will work.
