While I do think that our knowledge of his prophecies enhances our dread regarding the outcome of the film, I think the events of the story alone are also critical. He does a total 180 on the beliefs he wanted to assume; taking on a messianic title, weaponizing religious fundamentalism as a means of control, taking up vengeance as a motivator, using nuclear weapons, etc., all demonstrate his spiritual corruption. We knew he felt the temptation of these feelings in part 1 and the beginning of part 2, but seeing him fully give in was soul crushing for me at least. But the prophecies absolutely amplify that up given we know he knows the outcomes, which makes it even more nefarious by orders of magnitude.
What occurs is clear in my opinion, is the characters' lack of real choice. The bene gesserit are the real controllers. If you remember Paul in severe distress in Part One and lashing out at his mother, that she "made him a freak". Time and incidents are being controlled by Jessica and the B.G. What would be incredible is if Paul flipped the script on everyone. A bit like what his mother did when she defied the order of the B.G.'s and gave birth to Paul (instead of a girl), out of love... Love for Chani will cause him ( I hope), to sacrifice whatever that is that he is yielding to and to become a man like his father. Oh and this may be a departure from the source material, which I have not read but know a fair bit about, AND the director has already indicated by the end of Part 2 that he is willing to do that.
Such a great point about the action POVs. Also from what I’m hearing about Messiah, I just don’t know if it’s going to give audiences the resolution they want, certainly not a triumphant or heroic ending line a LOTR or Star Wars.
Yeah the sound design is impeccable. There are moments when the sound takes over the scene and you just go Wow! That's different and adds to the beauty of the film. I kinda want to watch it again!
I wonder if it's going to be a Lord of the Rings scenario, where Dune 2 will get some Tech crumbs and then Dune 3 will get all the big stuff as a accolade for the whole trilogy.
I think it’s possible the directors branch & academy don’t respect Denis as much as film twitter and letterboxd does. Maybe they think his films are carried by the best DPs in the game. His movies are green screen fests, it makes you wonder? hmm
don’t wanna spoil much but the bene geserit are very influential in what is going on. they had their plan for the future where Paul would be a woman and marry Feyd, then have a child who would be the messiah, however Leto wanted a son and because of her love for him, Jessica had one
Unquestionably Dune Part 2. It is far more immersive and epic. It has deeper themes and is thus more emotionally resonant. The Batman is also amazing, though.
It shows this set of twins hasn't read the books - and that's exciting since they seem ripe for the full Greek tragedy that is this modern story of the Atreides. (Interestingly, there seem to be many sets of twins among Dune , its imitators and, I've noticed, among TH-camrs commenting on Dune!)
this film deserves all the awards love but maybe Denis gets nominated this time...I dont think he'll win until Messiah which could win Best Picture too if it ends the trilogy well
Part 2 is miles better than Part 1. I went back to the 2021 film a few nights ago and was surprised how much it came across as worse. a lot of that movie is very "tutorial like" like a video game or something. the first 30 minutes or so are very clunky but the Harkonnen invasion goes insanely hard.
I'm predicting Dune Part Two to get nominated for - Picture, Director, Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Score, Costume Design, Make-Up and Hairstyling, Visual Effects, and Sound. I'm predicting wins in Cinematography, Production Design, Visual Effects, and Sound Box Office will probably be between 1-1.4 billion If it wins best picture it could also be nominated for Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem), and Supporting Actress (Zendaya) but i'm not predicting those. I still believe Sing Sing will win instead due to shedding light on unique original voices
Yes but it won during a COVID year where it was the only technical achievement film to come out. This year if Gladiator II is good, fingers crossed, they will both split most of the tech awards! Gladiator should take costume design and score

6:22 can someone walk me through why this movie worked on a character level for them? (Spoilers) I feel like Paul spent the film adamantly rejecting his messianic role, and then at the beginning of act 3 he drinks the water of life and decides to be more like the harkonnens. The spectacle and the craft aside, the movie just felt really empty to me. His character change felt arbitrary and hollow
I believe this is a deliberate setup for Dune Messiah. Paul's character arc is only just beginning or somewhere in the middle maybe?. Land the bombshells near the end then viola! Everyone needs answers.
Early to tell but I just don't imagine it losing Best Director to anyone. This was the best direction of VIlleneuve's career. I didn't feel the first hour and a half in the slightest I was completely soaked in, it developed the relations between Paul, Chani and the Fremen beautifully and introduced Feyd Raufa in that jaw-dropping arena, then there was 30 minutes of plotting and set up that were less impressive but necessary and then the last 30 minutes with the rallying of the Fremen, the battle and the vengeance were like a giant rush of emotion. And at the end I could easily watch another 1 hour. Yeah, maybe it won't win Best Picture (100 percent is getting nominated) or get Screenplay or acting nominations but unless something truly blows my mind this year, "I DIPLY LOVE IT" deserves Director.
Knowing what is to come (in the story of "Messiah"), the Academy may be reluctant to bestow "best picture" and "best director" honours on Part II since they might be forced to do it again for the next (and maybe not last) installment in the series. (After all, a lot of these honours have little to do with a single film or single performance and a lot to do with recognizing a cumulative contribution to the movie biz...) It's much the same reason "best actor", "best actress" and "best supporting actor" honours for Chalamet, Zendaya or Butler are unlikely: while they might get nominated, they're just too young and may have long careers ahead of them. They'll need to show us more before they start gathering up wins like some Hollywood icons have done... But "best supporting actress" for Ferguson (and "best adapted screenplay" for Villeneuve and Spaith) are quite another matter...
This film was not a "masterpiece", but honestly it was exactly what I wanted out of a blockbuster. It has AMAZING action set pieces that didn't overstay their welcome, it had a very compelling story, and most of all it had a unique message and actually made you think (in this movie about Religion, Prophecies, and political leaders). So, I'd give it a 9/10, or even 9.5/10. Again, a lot is leaning on a Part 3, but I don't see that as an issue and I can't remember the last time I've enjoyed a blockbuster as much as this. Part 1 was good certainly, but it just did not hit the same itch that this movie did.
[Spoilers only for first Dune book] - Messiah does have more answers, but the first book and movie already made it clear that the Bene Gesserit paved the way for the Lisan Al Gaib. Paul is only the “messiah” because the Bene Gesserit needed one, they fabricated a fictional prophesy generations ago and planted the seed in Fremen culture. This is all just to facilitate their own ultimate prophet, the Kwisatz Haderach. But the Bene Gesserit plan failed, because they can’t control Paul! He was a premature messiah, not the one they hoped to puppet. So yes the Bene Gesserit is behind all of it, but because of Lady Jessica’s own actions their plan has failed and Paul is now a rogue messiah waging his holy war (which was NOT the plan!)
I respect the brothers’ opinions here, but I’m baffled how anyone can say Dune Messiah isn’t peak Dennis Villeneuve. I think even Dennis himself would disagree here! This is his lifelong passion project, what he was dreaming up as a kid. And Part 2 here is the ultimate execution of that dream. Also just ask yourself, what fantasy movie has been at this level of quality in the last decade? There is little to no comparison
Well first off, Gravity and Interstellar aren't fantasy. Im iffy on calling Mad Max fantasy even. But Avatar Way of Water, Ill agree on that @@sreyangovender3404
For me the acting completely carried this film. I was very moved by Zendeya especially, as many moments hinge on her completely to really feel the full effect of the emotional beats in the film. The visuals are cool and it sounds cool and yada yada, but with a lack of (good) dialogue and fairly minimalist storytelling, the film leans super heavily into the performances which I was pleasently surprised by, as the acting was fairly stiff and one of the weaker points of the first film.
@@sreyangovender3404 she was the only reason the emotional beats hit for me, and some of the dumb dialogue i do not attribute to her performance and it works despite the writing
thought like the first movie, the action scenes were shafted so badly. Great setup, atmosphere and cinematography. But ends in a few shots and it cuts to the main crew getting where they need to with what it feels like ZERO resistance. I guess denis Villanueve just doesn't want to spend too much time on a grand action scene, but give us some great long shots. But for an epic sci-fi, just chuck us a bone give us an amazing grand action sequence!
Well, it's how the books go. The first book is simply Dune, and Dune Part 1 and Part 2 are roughly the two halves of it. The following book is called Dune Messiah. Dune is more than twice the length of Dune Messiah.
These Dune movies have done for blockbuster filmmaking in the 2020’s what Nirvana did for rock music. They’re well-crafted, more mature and thoughtful alternatives to the over-produced sludge of the MCU and its blockbuster peers, yet they’ve had such an impact on pop culture that they’ve become mainstream and made superheroes uncool.
Part 1 left me speechless, Part 2 was really good but felt too hectic at times jumping from one action scene to the next without taking its time like the first movie did. Still a Top 10 movie of the year probably.
I hated the first one. It was grand and over the top but BORING. All style no substance. Big sets, big costumes, huge vfx, etc but the story was boring. Fell asleep
The movie about political and religious manipulations, full of sci-fi concepts and cultures we’ve never seen on camera had so substance? Sounds like it went over your head
I might be overly generous, but I (as someone who just started the first book) think Paul is a generally good guy, who knows that there will be a terrible cost if he takes over. The events of the first half of this movie exist largely to show that the cost of him not taking over will be higher. Then, once he’s drank the water of life, he “Dr. Strange’s” and suddenly sees every possible future ahead of him and can no longer avoid responsibility and must now choose “the lesser evil” because (given his newfound omnipotence) no matter what happens, it’s his fault anyways.
@@ffffff1-mmmm odd, I’m only about half way through the first novel, but so far he is the same generally moral guy from the movie. I guess I’ll see how much he changes after “the water of life”.

Ooh yeah I saw this a few days ago. I think I’m gonna have to see it again cause I liked it but it was kind of overwhelming and I guess I didn’t know how to fully feel about it
Welcome to the films of Denis Villeneuve!
I didn’t think I would say that but I think Austin Butler is my favorite side character here… and I hated Elvis and the way he never got out of that role, but I saw him as something else for the first time here, and the black and white cinematography when he was introduced was IMMACULATE!
This movie didn’t work for me in a standard theatre. It was never engaging. But when I saw it in IMAX, then I understood the praise for the sound design of the movie. I still wish they had put in a bit more of the intrigue politically, it felt like a lot got cut short, but I’d give it a 4/5 7.5/10.
“He sounded like a baby Stellan Skarsgard” couldn’t agree more
I’ll be really curious to see whether Chalamet gets the well-deserved nomination
Never
mad@@showbizroxs
His performance unfortunately kept kicking me out of the experience otherwise great film.
i only see technical nominations in the cards
@@cookiehustle Agreed.
I think Ferguson and Bardem could get supporting Oscar noms. And they'd deserve it!
Austin is the one getting the supporting oscar norm & not bardem!
Yeah the sound design is impeccable. There are moments when the sound takes over the scene and you just go Wow! That's different and adds to the beauty of the film. I kinda want to watch it again!
I literally just opened TH-cam to see if your channel has put a dune review yet! Damn you just dropped it
Great vid 👍, Greg Fraser cinematography work will be studied for future film classes!
I wonder if it's going to be a Lord of the Rings scenario, where Dune 2 will get some Tech crumbs and then Dune 3 will get all the big stuff as a accolade for the whole trilogy.
What a spectacle this was, wow!
I think it’s possible the directors branch & academy don’t respect Denis as much as film twitter and letterboxd does. Maybe they think his films are carried by the best DPs in the game. His movies are green screen fests, it makes you wonder? hmm
Love my arrival and sicario but this is villanueves Dark Knight
don’t wanna spoil much but the bene geserit are very influential in what is going on. they had their plan for the future where Paul would be a woman and marry Feyd, then have a child who would be the messiah, however Leto wanted a son and because of her love for him, Jessica had one
Javier Bardem was the MVP and would make a great supporting actor nominee. You really missed him when he wasn't on the screen.
Austin Butler and not Bardem
[hand raised in Italian] "Furioso!"
Im gonna go see that tonight with my dad and sister
What's better Dune Part 2 or The Batman?
Thats tough i think i respect The Batman more
The Batman is a more singular and complete story. More satisfying.
dune 2
Unquestionably Dune Part 2. It is far more immersive and epic. It has deeper themes and is thus more emotionally resonant. The Batman is also amazing, though.
The Batman is one of the most immersive movies i’ve ever seen. The worldbuilding and rain & sound of crime constantly going on is genius.
the sound win is sooo locked
Dune 1 is world building and character building. That doesn’t make it worse, you just have to understand it’s purpose

I'm predicting Dune Part Two to get nominated for - Picture, Director, Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Score, Costume Design, Make-Up and Hairstyling, Visual Effects, and Sound.
I'm predicting wins in Cinematography, Production Design, Visual Effects, and Sound
Box Office will probably be between 1-1.4 billion
If it wins best picture it could also be nominated for Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem), and Supporting Actress (Zendaya) but i'm not predicting those.
I still believe Sing Sing will win instead due to shedding light on unique original voices
Bru the first one won 6 awards, this is surely do better
Yes but it won during a COVID year where it was the only technical achievement film to come out.
This year if Gladiator II is good, fingers crossed, they will both split most of the tech awards! Gladiator should take costume design and score
Supporting Actor is Austin
Cinematic accomplishment of the decade! Nothing short of historic
All hyperbole. Was not even my favorite movie this year. I enjoyed Madame Web and Argylle more than Dune 2.
me when i lie@@tonyg76
I agree that the sound was the highlight and fucking insane. Between this and The Zone of Interest, we are experiencing in a few months the most sublime uses of sound in film history in two polar opposite ways.
THe sound was too loud and overwhelming. Sound being loud does not make it amazing.
@@tonyg76 It wasn't that it was loud. It was that it made you feel like you were actually riding a sandworm, actually getting compelled by the voice, actually there in the battles.
@@purekinema No, it was loud and overwhelming to me. All that other stuff is overshadowed by me feeling overwhelmed by all of it. It was not a good sensory experience.
@@tonyg76 Understood, everyone has their own threshold, I just meant that I didn't think it was amazing because it was loud.
@@purekinema Thanks for clarifying. I felt the same about the Oppenheimer sound so I sometimes wonder if the loudest movie wins the Oscar.
My picks for acting nominations are Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Austin Butler. Think Butler and Bardem have the greatest chance.
Haven’t gotten a chance to see this yet but Bardem definitely makes the most sense to me. Dude has 4 nominations
@@seankoontz4235Austin is getting the oscar nomination and not bardem
Dumb take
@@Czar_2017 thanks dude.
Seeing it tomorrow… can’t wait
Read the books guys at least the first 3

(After all, a lot of these honours have little to do with a single film or single performance and a lot to do with recognizing a cumulative contribution to the movie biz...)
It's much the same reason "best actor", "best actress" and "best supporting actor" honours for Chalamet, Zendaya or Butler are unlikely: while they might get nominated, they're just too young and may have long careers ahead of them. They'll need to show us more before they start gathering up wins like some Hollywood icons have done...
But "best supporting actress" for Ferguson (and "best adapted screenplay" for Villeneuve and Spaith) are quite another matter...
Zendaya kinda broke my heart in this one
Oppenheimer or Dune Part 2?
Why not both?
Oppenheimer is peak
Both are two of the best of the decade and will be remembered for years, but Oppenheimer by a hair
Both are best movies of the decade
seems brother bro lost his arm meat
07:46 Damn, really shoulda put a spoiler warning on this 😬
Chalamet, Butler, Bardem and Ferguson should all get acting nominations if not wins.
Can u guys review tyler perry new film mea culpa
Fantastic video!
Let’s gooo !!!!
Can it get any better than Dune PT 2 for this current decade? IDK
Sure. In all seriousness, I enjoyed Madame Web and Argylle more than Dune 2.
@@tonyg76embarrassing to admit
@@DR-es5ey Not embarrassing at all. I am not apologizing for my likes/dislikes.
As much as I despised having to wait longer for this film, I'm glad that we don't have Oppenheimer and Dune Part 2 competing for awards this year.
Looks celestial
🎥🍿🍿🐝
I respect the brothers’ opinions here, but I’m baffled how anyone can say Dune Messiah isn’t peak Dennis Villeneuve. I think even Dennis himself would disagree here! This is his lifelong passion project, what he was dreaming up as a kid. And Part 2 here is the ultimate execution of that dream. Also just ask yourself, what fantasy movie has been at this level of quality in the last decade? There is little to no comparison
Gravity
Mad Max: Fury Road
Interstellar
Avatar: The Way of Water
Well first off, Gravity and Interstellar aren't fantasy. Im iffy on calling Mad Max fantasy even. But Avatar Way of Water, Ill agree on that @@sreyangovender3404
1st better technically, 2nd better story.
nobody mentioning the bizare cuts in a lot of the scenes
Nobody mentions the story
This will be this years Oppenheimer. It was big, dumb, and cheesy. 'As it was written' drove me nuts 😂
Zendaya was the weakest performance in the film
The overwhelming victory with little resistance is very faithful to the book
Paul was pretty much a god by the end of book 1, dude sees all possible futures. Of course there's no resistance
wait they're not really calling the next one Dune: Messiah after numbering the previous two are they 💀
It’s the name of the next book but I agree that that sort of thing is annoying
Fell asleep
Why? Where was substance lacking?
The movie about political and religious manipulations, full of sci-fi concepts and cultures we’ve never seen on camera had so substance? Sounds like it went over your head
I was, tbh, so bored…
A crime! Jail to you!
Me, too,
I might be overly generous, but I (as someone who just started the first book) think Paul is a generally good guy, who knows that there will be a terrible cost if he takes over. The events of the first half of this movie exist largely to show that the cost of him not taking over will be higher.
Then, once he’s drank the water of life, he “Dr. Strange’s” and suddenly sees every possible future ahead of him and can no longer avoid responsibility and must now choose “the lesser evil” because (given his newfound omnipotence) no matter what happens, it’s his fault anyways.
frank herbert would disagree with you about "generally good guy"
@@ffffff1-mmmm odd, I’m only about half way through the first novel, but so far he is the same generally moral guy from the movie. I guess I’ll see how much he changes after “the water of life”.
read the book.
Every critic is giving this film glowing reviews and im suspicious about this.
Except for David Ehrlich at Indiewire lol
… get a life. Something’s are just that good
What a terrible take regarding his career, his best movies are Dune: Part 2, Prisoners and Incendies, followed closely by Arrival and Dune: Part 1. Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario are his weakest ones along with Enemy.
Nah I disagree with you calling 2049 and sicario his weakest but I do agree Dune part 2 is his best one so far
1 out of 10...i give it a 3.

Movie lacked emotion. It looked great and sounded great but it seemed the story is incomplete and what happened didn’t carry any weight.
