For anyone curious, the next three videos are going to be in order: Count Dooku, Darth Vader, and finally Emperor Palpatine. Since our patrons chose Maul first, I figured I’d cover all the apprentices of Sidious in order, and finish it off with him at the end. May the 4th be with you all!

He never truly understood power and strength. He didn't understand the subtle power of mercy and nobility. Being a personification of darker aspects of life isn't inherently evil, after all. Had he learned proper control and known when to be soft and even altruistic at times, Maul could have been a terrifying foe: one who wields subtlety and kindness themselves as weapons. After all, the best way to manipulate someone is to give them what they want. After that, they are more eager to bend to your will as they will likely feel indebted to you. He could have followed the path of Kreia and been a true force of nature if he played his cards right.
And as a fun fact, Kreia herself is very much akin to the tales of the Unseelie Fae in the original folklore. Cold, hard, merciless, but capable of genuine kindness. But no matter what she did, she had a price she demanded for her assistance.

@Trarr: the old man Not really, Maul was just power-hungry.
Azula while cruel, deep down just wanted her father's love and truly felt hurt over his friends betraying her.
She genuinely felt hurt over her mother calling her a monster.
Her father was the last person Azula thought she could trust, and Ozai's refusal to include her in his final conquest only served to cause Azula more inner pain.
Her breakdown was the culmination of her failed relationship with her mother and her jealousy toward Zuko for receiving more of their mother's affection, the betrayal she suffered at the hands of Mai and Ty Lee, and finally, her defeat by Zuko and Katara.
So no, these two weren't much alike.

Love the video! Darth Maul is my favorite Star Wars villain and you brilliantly captured his character. The only real complaint is that you didn’t mention his actual death much, as we see him try to connect with Old Ben before he passes and take comfort that sidious will fall, but otherwise this video is great. His iteration as an apprentice is my favorite point of the character as his arrogance and impatience are rivaled only by his deadly combat skills. He is trained his whole life to be a covert operative and it shows that’s where he is most effective. During the clone wars he is more patient but his effort to return to his master is refused and he loses the only people he has any attachment too.

By far one of my favorite Star Wars characters.
Growing up I never imagined he would be so developed and so tragic. He just felt like a generic villain for episode 1, doing whatever evil deeds the true villain needed. But then he got fleshed out over the years to what we have now.
Even at the end, his hate and vengeance carried him to the same demise he’s always had.
You expect this big epic fight but he is struck down like nothing, just a single movement and his light is extinguished like a candle.
All these years focusing your hate and want of suffering on a person, only to be struck down within a second by him.
You have nothing and no one with you as those who where close are long gone, everything you had has been destroyed or stripped away from you, yet here is the one person who fueled your fire at your side in your final moments holding you as you draw your last breath.
There’s just something so tragic and poetic about it
    *edit:
Love your videos btw! Can’t wait to see more of your content, curious on the other Star Wars villains you might cover.

Maul was a fantastic villain.. He committed terrible acts, but he was still sympathetic to an extent. He was once an innocent child, corrupted by Sidious and turned into a monster filled with Malice. In the end, he died a broken man, with his most hated enemy as the only person left in his life to comfort him in his last moments. Their final scene together was powerful and tragic.

He may not have achieved his goals directly, but he DID have an enormous impact on the saga, as him killing Qui-gon meant that Anakin didn't have (arguably) the right master that would steer him from the fate of becoming Darth Vader and bringing down the jedi order. When you think about it, Maul indirectly created Darth Vader, who as we all know, both assisted in killing the jedi order, as well as killed Obi-Wan and even Sidious himself (willfully ignoring the events of RoS right now).
So while Maul never knew it he did have a hand in fulfilling his goals, though it was not by his own hands, robbing him of the satisfatiction and fulfillment he had craved his whole life in the dakness.

Maul is the very epitomy of "consumed by rage". Its his key feature, it strengthens him, whilst also limiting / blinding him.
I like to think that towards his end (mainly referring here to his appearences in Rebels) there is a degree of learning (somewhat) from his failures.
He reaches out to Ahsoka, and then Ezra. And whilst hes still trapped by his rage and his machiavations... you can kind of see him trying to find his way out from it all. Obviously his rage causes him to ultimately fail.
