And the way they also come up with a way, legit sometimes, BS other times, for him to always be the strongest villain LOL The true monarch that he is, he can't come back as like a third or fourth villain, he's always the main man. Freezer gold, freezer black. He's like the villain from a nightmare that no matter how many times you vanquish him we all know he will return
@@DamienHanma it's honestly really cool how Frieza is the final boss. Bardock sent Goku away from planet vegeta because of Frieza, meaning the entire dragon ball saga will begin and end with Frieza. He's the GOAT
So what I’m getting is that Frieza is based on (1) a Queen “or something” (2) a literal freezer (3) a Japanese real estate speculator. Toriyama truly was a madman.
Agreed. While a tragic villain can definitely work, an unsympathetic villain can be equally as fun. The trick is to let them have an impact on the other characters and have their personality stand out. Freeza and almost all the dbz villains were perfect examples of this
@@thegatorhator6822 I think Kaguya was never a fallen hero, A tragic one maybe but she was evil since the start, same with the rest of her Inter-dimensional Alien Race
I remember when Goku went super saiyan for the first time, I couldn't believe anything could be so cool. It was probably the most epic thing that I had ever seen in my young life xD
That was my first episode of DBZ I watched when it first released on TV. You'd think that'd be a good intro to DBZ, but since I never saw other previous episodes, I didn't understand it.
I dunno, I find the original Toonami dub absolutely chilling. "So you're the ones, huh? Naughty. I don't see how three shrimps and a burnt-out Saiyan managed to get the best of the Ginyu Force, _but now it's YOUR TURN!!_ It's okay. It won't hurt too bad. Relax, *_death is my specialty."_*
what i love about Freezer is that compared to a pure evil being like Majin Boo, Freezer can recognize what te morally good choice would be in any given situation but still chooses to do the evil one most of the time. Pure renegade energy
Great, Now I want to See a Darth Sidious vs Frieza Fight. Star Wars' Emperor of the Universe Vs Dragon Ball's Emperor of the Universe, It'd be Awesome! C:
Frieza’s pure evil and memorable moments of his cruelty in the Namek saga was such a sight to behold when I first watched DBZ Kai in my childhood. His torture of vegeta was so disturbing that I actually felt bad for vegeta, despite his murders of the Namekians earlier in the arc.
what's crazy to me is how vegeta tortured goku like 100x worse than how freeza tortured vegeta, or how freeza beat up goku. i never could figure out why toriyama wrote it that way. i don't think the series was being intentionally tamed down during the namek saga... probably.
1:54 his brother Cooler mentions in one of the movies how their parents "spoiled" freeza and implies Freeza was treated like the golden child. The movie isnt canon but still an interesting window into Freezas character.
The canon also implies that Frieza was spoiled given how he's never had to put any effort in anything. Although it's arguable how reliable Cooler is since he didn't seem to like Frieza much anyways
Actually if u watch the Japanese dub of the film, I don’t think Cooler ever mentions Frieza being spoiled by their father. Also the scene in Japanese actually has Cooler mention that Frieza must have been defeated by a Super Saiyan, if I remover correctly.
I'd love to see some sort of canon prequel/thing going into the history of Cold, Cooler and Frieza. That whole family is so mysterious and interesting.
One thing I really appreciate about Frieza is the unapologetic racism. In Xenoverse 2 there's an Infinite History scenario where he goes off on a racist rant so bad that it actually took me a few minutes to stop laughing, his unapologetic evil is a sight and a half to behold.
That’s the most important part. The worst kinds of liars in this world are the ones who lie to themselves. Self awareness & self acknowledgment is what separates us from other biological beings
Frieza is a kind of a villain that I absolutely love to see win and lose at the same time. It's fun to see Frieza utterly dominating his peers and enemies with sheer terror and charisma. But it's absolutely a BLAST when I see get his ass absolutely handed to him. It's quite a rare feeling for a villain that makes him the most unique villain of all times.
The Reason Frieza is my Favorite Dragon Ball Villain is because he has no Tragic Backstory or Excuse for his Actions he is just Irredeemably and Purely Evil without even a Shred of Remorse for his Vile Actions.
Yeah that's why I have a love-hate relationship with his character. He's the most boring concept for a villain, but he's one of if not THE best version of it.
@@doodleboy565I’m just comparing him to Villains in Dragon Ball who are Sympathetic not that Sympathetic Villains are just bad concepts I just think Frieza embodies the Concept of a Ruthless and Cruel Tyrant better than anyone else.
Freeza is a perfect villain imo. Great design, personal connection between the hero, powerful, and irredeemable but full of personality and arrogance. Dbz was really at its best during the Namek arc
Goku and Frieza really don't have a personal connection in the Frieza arc, since Goku dosen't really care about the sayain's at all and just wants to fight Frieza because he is strong
@@debater452 Idk he literally killed his whole race father and mother included, just because Goku didn't fully grasp how personal it was doesn't mean it wasn't.
@@debater452Goku's initial motivation might have been mostly wanting to fight a strong opponent but the moment Frieza killed Vegeta and then later Krillin and tried to just kill everyone and Goku's friends I promise you it became personal
@My_pfp_beats_all_dog_breeds. It sounds like you’ve just watched romance anime which isn’t “most anime” lol there are other genres like horror, fantasy, action, thriller, etc etc
Frieza's confident and condescending personality-all while somehow remaining verbally polite towards his opponents (albiet often in a patronizing manner)- instantly made him my favorite villain in all of media. It's such a unique personality for a villain as ruthless and unstoppable as Frieza was.
Akira, Miura and Kazuki Takashi (creator of Yu-Gi-Oh!) can now be reunited in heaven. They brought so much influence on manga, shonen and anime genre. May they rest in peace. Thanks for everything and contributing to my childhood and making one of the most iconic series.
"I don't draw things that are so unpleasant that they affect you psychologically." This is the same man who made Cells shedded exoskeleton & his first form 😂😂😂😂
Honestly Frieza always give off the vibes of a spoiled brat that has never been humbled in his entire existence and all it took was a very angry monkey to put him in his place.🐱
I don't remember right now if it was an anime only thing or also happened in the manga, but at a certain point in the fight before the super saiyajin transformation Freeza said that except his dad, only Goku managed to hurt him
What's wild to me is he beats Goku in ss1 form too if he had done any kind of training in his life. OG ss Goku would've stood no chance against golden Frieza and I enjoy the idea that Goku honestly got lucky in that first battle with Frieza spending his life believing he is the all powerful. Obviously one doesn't happen without the other but still lol
One aspect of Freeza's personality that I enjoy an what makes him so terrifying to me is his ability to be benevolently cruel. To be ironically pleasant as he speaks to you deciding whether to end you fast or slow is probably the best thing about a villain I can think of. Some of the best villains are like that. Him being polite to a degree masks his malicious nature and before you know it: death beam to the heart. It's brilliant!
Honestly, I’d love to see a freeza redemption arc. I’d want it to be absolutely stupid like how Hercule convinced main buu to stop being evil (just simply telling buu that killing other living things is wrong because buu just didn’t know that before). Maybe freezes destroying a planet but in between, exploring, and decides to cook something from the forest on that planet. While finding food, he comes across a hallucinogenic mushroom/plant or whatever, and just starts tripping balls. He’s having a horror trip in his mind, but is completely incapacitated physically. Basically reliving all his fears like dying in a humiliating way, goku, vegeta, bardock, gohan, trunks and other sayins mocking him before killing him mercilessly the same way he did to them. And while he’s tripping out, a random stray cat just comes up and starts observing him. Initially, freeza is frozen in fear because he sees Beerus, but really it’s just a stray cat. In his drugged out state he realizes that if the sayins can inflict all of his worse fears on him, what then could god like beings do. Rather than beg for mercy, he accepts that he will die once again, and with humility, asks beerus (the stray cat) to please make it quick (he’s remembering the “mercy” he showed vegeta on namek). The cat just meows at him, lays down, and just starts pawing at his tail. Freeza, though initially confused, starts laughing because of relief, and then begins looking around and seeing the beauty of the Forrest he’s around on this foreign planet. He lays down in the grass with the wind swaying, and the cat comes on top of his abdomen and starts purring as it falls asleep. Freezas peaking at this point, so he has that classic exiting the body and becoming one with the universe thing, and realizes that he’s grateful to Goku for pushing him to train and become stronger. He realizes that his own arrogance is what’s been holding him back, and as he’s in this serene, beautiful trip after initially being horrified, he discovers how beautiful life is, and begins crying because of how cruel he’s been and how indiscriminately he’s destroyed so many living beings and other planets. He looks down at the cat purring on his stomach as he begins to come down, and it meows at him. He spends the remainder of his trip thinking about how cruel his father was to him and others, and decides to break the cycle, by sparing the cat (he realizes it’s a cat as the drug begins to wear off). Once the drug wears off, he spends another day in the after glow processing everything. By this point, the cats left, and he’s going spare the planet, leave, and sail around space for a bit. As he’s about head out, the cat comes back up to him and meows. Instead, he stays on the planet with the cat, living a peaceful farmer life, and bonds with it until its death for the next 15 years. Instead of crashing out like he usually does, he grieves and goes through his emotions properly. He sets his sites on a new goal, and with his new found empathy, decides to seek out the help of the z fighters. At some point on the planet he has built a hyperbolic time chamber, and just trains just for the fun of it, but also to extend his time with the cat during its lifespan. Anyone who’s owned a cat knows how they are, and so the cat teaches freeza patience. If he tried petting it and the cat scratches his or leaves, rather than kill it, he realizes that if he kills it, it will not be able to show him affection later on like coming to him at 10 pm and just chilling with him for a bit. This is what allows freeza to actually become the strongest being in the universe 7. Or something along those lines. Basically, he learns humility by defeating his own inner demons and upbringing in order to become stronger. Rather than a real near death experience like in the case of vegeta or Goku to become super sayins, his is an ego death. His new goal: gather the dragon balls to ask shenrron to revive his feline friend for as long as freeza is alive. That’s it, nothing more nothing less.
I actually think the reason why Dragon Ball fans love Frieza is his role in the greater overarching story. He's essentially the villain responsible for the story. Without him, Goku likely wouldn't have been sent to Earth. Vegeta wouldn't be the character he is. Everything in early Dragon Ball from Goku's time on Earth, to the arrival of the saiyans, to venturing to Planet Namek was the perfect and natural set up for Goku to eventually confront Frieza. He's also the last DBZ villain that actively sought after the Dragon Balls. After the Frieza saga, the spheres that the show is named after essentially become a background accessory they use at the end of every battle to revive people.
Great video! Enjoyed every second. Another aspect about Frieza I'd like to mention is the source of his kind of power or energy also reflects his character. Examples: as powerful as he is he can't sense energy, at least when we first meet him, he needs technology when it comes to sensing or connecting to chi. Which also further compliments Goku as his opposite But also his ability to manipulate the physical world, where even in the tournament of power he is seen crushing Jiren with giant rocks from the arena. Or when he is revived at least in the resurrection movie his minion swears they brought him back out of loyalty which is a virtue, but to Frieza it clear he dosnt understand virtue, or why anyone would act from such a place. His first thought and respone is that no one else was capable of handling the empire he created thus they needed him back, because the idea that someone was capable of ruling the empire but would rather bring him back instead out of loyalty is purely inconceivable. This further implies his pure disconnect from spirit, he has no feeling to the spirit he is purely physically and his energies extend to physical manipulation, but nothing spiritually This further compliments the relationship with Goku cause Goku existence is the furthest thing Frieza is capable of understanding or comprehending. Perhaps the most frightening person Frieza can imagine is Goku. These where just some other areas of Frieza I was worth mentioning. Thanks again for the great video.
Frieza is the kind of villian where even when he's on the good side to stop the destruction of the universe, you still love to see the enemies beat the shit out of him
"I doubt i need an introduction, but just in case, i am the mighty frieza and yes, all the horror stories you've heard about me are true" Frieza. All You need to know about the most evil and iconic villain in DB.
I already had great admiration for the limitless evil of Frieza…but knowing that he’s based on property speculators? Perfection. Infinite tier villainy.
Frieza is up there with Toguro in terms of villains done right. Not to mention Frieza helped popularize the "my smallest form is my most powerful" trope we have today.
@@UltimatePhantasm I'm just saying that unlike the rest of his forces, they were not afraid of him and they were not hiding under him or even using him to gain more power. They genuinely believed in him.
I mean it makes sense, Frieza was probably their top employer. It was nice how they seemed to have an odd respect for each other, Frieza thought so highly of them that he couldn't believe someone had beaten them
Which is interesting since Ginyu's ability ultimately would have Freeza kill him on the spot if he knew about it. He played the lovable dancing fool well and Freeza was none the wiser.
@@CornBreadtm1 I men we see him use the ability in Super in Friezas training partner and Frieza recognizes him and isnt shook at all about his ability to change forms. Frieza knew all along about Ginyus ability but never considered it a threat to him that is how much trust there was between them.
I like Frieza vs Goku because they contrast in every way: - Compassionate vs heartless - Desire to improve vs believing in own infallible greatness - Authentic vs grandiose The play off of each other very well in more than just combat
Given that he has an imperial army and empire that invades and conquers worlds, I can’t help but wonder if he was also based of any dictator or warlord.
@@afrosamourai400 I always thought he sold planets to people loyal to him like the Ginyu Force. Their own little kingdom under his empire as a thank you/payment, but Freeza like any mob boss needs his kickback so he sells it to them instead of just rewarding them.
When Toriyama died, I saw a tweet that explained he modeled the villians after real estate speculators and this gives the writing in the show so much more relatable grounding to reality than other shows. Very good video, loved it.
Frieza is one of the few “evil for evil sake” villains i like. I usually like villains that have a compelling story/motivation for said villainy. However frieza just radiates that “fuck you i do what I want” vibe and nothings wrong with that because it works well with the kind of story he’s in.
When I first watched Frieza in DBZ as a kid, I was quite astonished by his unabashed ruthlessness and cunning persona. I knew that he was a character that I'd love to despise. Then, when I saw him in the Tournament of Power arc in DBS, I was first wondering what was Goku thinking, bringing him along with his team. Seeing them fight alongside each other was a sight to behold, but I knew he had his personal motivations and reasons for doing so, like a lot of humans do. Frieza is no doubt the immemse personification of evil that has ever been created, and the beloved Akira Toriyama did an impeccable job in creating him with every diabolical detail. Rest in absolute paradise to him, and as always, your videos give a genuinely wondrous and understandable look at the villains people love to despise, discuss healthily, and watch over and over again.
While Frieza errantly kills soldiers without a care in the world, the Frieza Force apparently offers daycare services and maternity leave for expectant parents. I like to think someone out there was a pretty cool "mom" to him so he just understands the value of a good parent in life.
That "mom" comes in the form of Berri Blu, one of his most trusted advisors. It was probably a suggestion of hers in order to promote more loyalty through gratitude rather than loyalty through only fear; To encourage the idea that their boss was more than just a one-dimensional force of destruction.
@@thegatorhator6822 Enough with correcting people in the various comment threads about Frieza's name being spelled "Freeza". It's irritating as hell. For me and many others, it's "Frieza", not "Freeza .
The Frieza Force has always been one of my favorite enemy factions in a series. Their reach and influence is so intensely felt throughout the series and the anime had a lot of filler that makes them feel so much more prominent than what the manga cannon shows us.
Agreed and some of my favorite designs even if I didn't care for the character I still love the armor and various alien designs from the Sayians, Appule's race, the blasters, scouters, there is so much to just look at and enjoy.
It’s a bit of a pity that we’ve never truly had much media on Frieza’s empire. Yes we see some scenes of it, mostly from the anime, but what was life like for the civilian side of Frieza’s empire. We see how Saiyans were treated, but how were other races under the empire’s occupation like. What were the living standards, type of economy and laws in place? And what was it like for those living in the empire when the Emperor was killed? Hopefully we could see more media that expands on the lore of Frieza’s empire in the future similar to how there is lots of Star Wars media that covers life in Palpetine’s empire. It has lots of potential given how big it was, encompassing around 70% of the universe at its peak. That should make it significant larger than even Palpetine’s empire which only encompassed one galaxy.
1) Freeza’s *sole* redeeming quality of tolerating his Childhood Nanny Berryblue’s warm-teasing *without* vaporizing her his a truly amusing example of the truism “Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas.” 2) Cell, as a Generic Chimera manufactured to be a weapon, had no free agency in even existing, much less the chance to exercise free moral will, is frankly less evil than Freeza, who *had* but waived that freedom & right.
“This type of affection should be likened to a pet owner favoring certain pets” should be “This type of affection should be likened to a farmer favoring certain livestock”
Precisely. As Dadoria said, Frieza saw and respected Vegeta's potential, which is why he spared him (ultimately he was proven correct, as Saiyain Saga Vegeta had a power level even higher than Ginyu while in his Great Ape form). The "special treatment" Frieza claimed to give Vegeta was probably just certain liberties that would help him grow stronger or be of better use. Liberties he probably didn't have to give, but considering how similar the two were in personality (especially the version Vegeta in the Saiyain Saga), it makes sense that Frieza saw a bit of himself in the saiyain prince. I always thought it was an interesting parallel the way Vegeta in the saiyain saga and Frieza in the Namek Saga, both claimed to be the strongest in the universe, despite knowing that superior beings existed. It speaks to their similar level of pride and arrogance. Heck, Vegeta was so far gone in his first appearance that he was willing to kill what remained of the saiyain race without batting an eye (he even nearly blew himself up when he aimed that Galick Gun at the Earth, the same way Freiza did to Namek when he started losing).
WOW. I have to say, this is the most comprehensive and entertaining analysis of this character I have ever seen. And I've been a dragon ball fan my whole life. Hats off to you my friend.
Frieza was a cold, ruthless killer. He and the Ginyu Squad along with Vegeta were really out there making whole planets and races disappear. He pushed Goku beyond limits that had never been seen. And on top of it all, he did not care about anything or anyone else in the slightest bit. He’d torture and kill you with a smile on his face the whole time.
RIP to the GOAT: Akira Toriyama. His legacy will live on forever. Been a fan ever since i watched the first episode of OG DB on tv when i was 9. Thanks For this vile
Excellent video. The Namek Arc was what, in my opinion, what really sold The West on Anime and its somewhat unorthodox yet unique methods of long-form storytelling. I was about 8-9 years old when it began airing on Toonami and not only was I absolutely TRANSFIXED UPON THE TV when it was airing a new episode, but two things in particular are what really sold my generation on it: - the foreshadowing of something called “The Legendary Supa Saiya-Jin” (aka Power Levels/measurable progression of the characters’s abilities) - Frieza’s unparalleled depths of depravity & capriciousness tempered by that assuredness of their own level(s) of power People can whine all they want about how Toriyama & ToyoTaro “rehashed Frieza” for Resurrection F, but really thinking about it…you can really see why Toriyama NEEDED his crowning achievement in Evil back in the “main roster” for Super: Reinforce why none have compared since and continue his unending character arc of NEEDING TO BE THE RULER OF ALL! Even Beerus just flat out allowing Frieza and King Cold to run amuck on Universe 7 days a lot since it establishes a level of power Frieza would want to aspire to (then surpass) and how even the Gods of Destruction recognize the potential of both the greatest of the Good and of Evil. RIP Akira Toriyama and thank you for your unparalleled contributions to the history of the world’s culture
There's a lot to love about a villain like Frieza. His grinning calmness and mannerisms of speech are all the more terrifying, just because they indicate his absolute confidence that he has nothing to fear from whoever he's meeting, his cruelty and mercy are just arbitrary enough, that you can't be sure of almost anything around him, which is also pretty chilling. However, he also comes across as a genuine person with his own desires and concerns, and while there's no question that his identity and his powers effected the kind of person he became, they didn't effect it to the degree that Cell or Buu's natures effected their choices. In addition, Frieza's history with the saiyans, and his past crimes against them made the struggle to defeat him unique, because while a good villain can absolutely be just someone who's a big enough threat, that personal connection only adds to the significance of the conflict against them. In fact, it could be argued that Frieza was more connected to Goku personally than any villain in the series since Radditz. He's just one of those villains that had it all.
I can say that Frieza's death scene is one of my most favorite of all villains, definitely my favorite among the villains you've yet to cover iirc. It's so pivotal and cathartic, and doesn't just kill him off in a satisfying way, it properly closes the curtain on all the underlying reasons Frieza was written in the story to begin with. About how good overcomes evil because it seeks the way through, while evil is just helplessly blind
Frieza reminds me of Darth Sidious, but unlike Palpatine, Frieza learned some humility and evolved his character along the way. He saw the importance of training, meditation and even teamwork. He even has a grudging respect for Son Goku
This lessens the character. Frizas is someone who commits genocide on a daily basis and is basically a racist. He shouldn't be evolved more and gain humility or gain respect for goku. He should be just kept a straight up monster This is why he should've stayed dead.
Frieza is the one villian in the series i think is beyond redemption, He's been so twisted by his greed and need for domination that he'll always be a threat His recent shift in focus to being more amicable to Goku and co is literally only because being around them makes him stronger- if he had nothing to gain from the interaction and was able, he'd just kill them
It’s been 2 months since Toriyama passed, and I still get emotional when I hear other people talk about the impact he’s also had on their lives. His legacy is immeasurable. Great intro. 🤟🏽🍃
Great breakdown and I think Frieza is so well loved because of the many layers to his character. The way he runs his empire is not just a feudal system like Japan or Medieval Europe, but Frieza also runs the empire similar to say the Persian of Mongolia empires, because in those systems you didn't need to be born into it to join and raise up through the ranks in fact many of the most famous generals in those empires were foreigners of conquered peoples. It's also the various looks and transformations that Frieza goes through that always keeps you guessing what comes next. We also see how great of a manipulator he is, when he destroys planet Vegeta unless you were there you believed the story about it being hit by a massive meteor, in fact the story was so convincing that even the great King Kai, god of the Northern section of the galaxy believed it, for when he told Goku the story of the Sayians he told Goku the official version, only Vegeta thought it might be a lie but couldn't do anything about it. We also see how dark and sadistic Frieza is when fighting the Z-Fighters villains in the past and after Frieza did what they did out of a plan or necessity whether need the Dragon Balls for world dominance, take their time in a fight to test their own abilities, or destroy all because they are simple monsters. Frieza took his time first as a way to punish our heroes, then once they showed they could fight he only powered up enough to see what kind of challenge they could give him only to see out heros have strength so let's turn it up to see what happens next. At anytime given the depths of Frieza's power he could have ended the fight on Namek at anytime but didn't because then he'd be left on a planet with nothing to do but wait for King Cold's ship, Frieza was actually killing time, he was so powerful that planet killers like Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta were just toys to pass the time.
I have always found it interesting how Frieza’s empire is made of multiple races and and is not dominated by the rule and superiority of one specific race like most empires in real life and in fiction (eg Palptine’s empire had a human dominant sentiment and rule) I’ve also had a theory regarding Frieza ‘selling planets’ as I’ve always found it strange what Frieza could gain from selling planets to poor races that he couldn’t just take with his power. So my theory is that his empire would conquer a planet, give it to a race in need and in exchange, instead of giving him riches, they pledge loyalty and become a part of his empire. This is essentially his empire’s method of imperialism and how they recruit people for his armies. I feel this would be consistent with how he is portrayed as he seems more like a Hegemonic warlord and Emperor rather than some crooked Buisnessman who sells things to earn a profit that he could just forcibly take.
Holy! My favorite DBZ villain! Thank you, Vile! I used to stop everything I was doing every afternoon at five o’clock and turning on Toonami and watching what was my favorite TV show at the time. You’ll be truly missed Toriyama! RIP.
Namek is the best arc in anime. It just feels so much like a war and a losing struggle for good guys. Seeing them outsmart and out maneuver the bad guys is so fun to watch. Plus goku and Vegetas gravity training scenes are the most motivational things ever when I’m working out
Love the upload. Definitely subscribed. Small quibble, which I only notice by nature of my day job: "One's environment always shapes their character" - "one's" is singular, "their" is plural. Easy pattern to fix. I'm sure no one cares but me, but I only noticed it because of how well-written this entire script actually is. Kudos.
Their isn't necessarily plural, it's perfectly fine to use it in a singular context when the gender is either unknown or not their to speak of. Like "oh I met a new friend yesterday" "what's their name?"
@@M0nsterm0uth Not necessarily plural, no. And in this case,"their" has more than one use. I think your point just ends up clouding the conversation further for me, given the somewhat recent (comparatively speaking) adoption of "they/them/theirs" as a non-binary label. The word doesn't negatively impact comprehension in this case - as our world gets more narrowly defined, I'm just interested in clarity. Appreciate your input.
This is going to be a typed equivalent of walking into a room, it falling silent and everyone starts staring at me. You have such a great and unique channel. As well as doing quite realistic characters, you also do ones that are larger than life as well as different forms of media. The variety keeps your channel fresh. I watched cartoons when I was growing up and still appreciate them now. But I never had the inclination to watch this form of anime. I did however recently watch Avatar: The Last Airbender a few years ago. An amazing amount of depth in the characters as well as some terrific performances.
Frieza is one of the greatest villains in anime and manga history, hell maybe in all of media. He’s completely unrepentant yet also very charming. Oozing with personality and reveling in every misdeed
RIP Akira Toriyama, thanks for the memories. I had the same experience rushing home for DBZ on toonamie every day! Used to buy the sagas in vhs because when you put them side by side they'd make a picture from that saga.
i swear to christ i always thought this voice was AI or something....holy shit seeing dude actually there and talk is trippyyyyy. BUT thank you so much for this vid, im a diehard DB fan
Frieza is easily a contender for the greatest anime villain of all time. He has the physical power to casually destroy a planets, which to him are expendable. Excellent analysis as always. Suggested villain profiles: 1. Frank Underwood/Francis Urquart (House of Cards) 2. Player 001 (Squid Game) 3. Petyr Baelish (A Song of Ice and Fire) 4. Frank Gallagher (Shameless US 5. Marty and Wendy Byrde (Ozark) 6. Dudley Smith (L.A Confidential) 7. The Killer (The Killer) 8. Idi Amin (Last King of Scotland) 9. Kratos (God of War series) 10. Eric Cartman (South Park) 11. Father (Full Metal Alchemist) 12. The Sons of Anarchy Gang
A few more Zamasu (Dragon ball) Vegeta (Dragon Ball) (Before he truly became good) Moro (Dragon ball) Ryuga (Beyblade) Alastor (Hazbin Hotel) Adam (Hazbin Hotel) Belos (The owl house)
the tyrant, emperor, and anime's greatest most shameless villain I haven't even watched the vid yet and I'm excited for your take on Frieza 😁 Thank you Vile!
In reference to Toriyama’s comment about Freeza being partially inspired by “some queen he saw in a movie”. I believe there are some good contenders for who he pulled from. This is all sourced from a phenomenal post on Kanzenshuu by the user Kunzait. First is the character Dongfang Bubai from “the Smiling Proud Wanderer”. Despite only appearing in a single chapter he is arguably the most famous character in the story and has been depicted many times in Wuxia/Martial arts films, which inspired Toriyama heavily. His androgynous appearance, signature finger beams and cruelty towards subordinates are all very Freeza-esque. There’s also the character Wang Zhen from the Shaw Brothers film “Secret Service of the Imperial Court” which released in 1984, the same year Dragon Ball started. Freeza’s more psychopathic and spoiled brat tendencies alongside his signature laugh in the Japanese version are likely pulled from Zhen. They even meet similar ends with both being bisected. Both characters are physically defined by strong feminine features such as lipstick and painted fingernails, with Bubai in particular often being played by a woman. This could be the reason why Toriyama remembers them as queens. It’s all speculation though.
Frieza might be the first evil you've covered that could legitimately surpass Sheev Palpatine and Morgoth, in terms of power, scope, ambition, and overall vice. That's saying something! That being said, it would be interesting to see an analysis of a more low-key evil, focused solely on a singular individual, like Cinderella's Lady Tremain. Which do you think is worse: a widespread, all-encompassing apathetic evil, or one that intentionally affects one specific person?
Frieza’s empire is probably far larger than Palpetine’s given that Palpetine ruled over a good chunk of one galaxy, meanwhile Frieza had around 70% of the universe under him. That should encompass multiple galaxies, meaning Frieza has probably ruled over more people than Palpetine and for a longer time if I’m not wrong.
That was great and well researched. I thought there might be a bunch of inaccuracies if you werent really a big fan of DB but it all checks out as far as i can tell. Good job bro
What I love about Frieza is he’s such a counter culture to todays media. He is no sympathetic villain, he’s just a straight up classic evil villain with no real redeeming qualities. Just an absolute menace that the heroes have to stop.
Fun fact: Akira Toriyama based frieza off nightmares he had on his childhood and what he thought monsters looked like then. Plus real estate speculators who he considered "The worst kind of people".
He's pretty much why i don't get hyped about most shounen antagonist when people say "oooh this guy is so cool because they see people as insects" when freiza is out here seeing everyone as that and causing mass extinctions without even thinking about it. Plus how much damage he could take and still survive is metal
@@commandervile394 madara has nothing in common with frieza madara wanted to end wars and bring peace in the universe..frieza was just a mass murderer capitalist with no goal
These are the reasons why Frieza is different from other villains: - King Piccolo is the dark side of the nameless Namekian who was rejected by the previous Kami-sama because he found darkness in his heart due to his loneliness on Earth since childhood. So he decided to separate him from him to accept the position at the cost of his evil double causing mass death and destruction in his path. - Cell was created as the ultimate weapon of an evil organization that was destroyed by Goku when he was a child, of which one of the last survivors swore revenge on him without realizing that his superior's true motivation is to become huge without the care of numerous deaths and sacrifices of his soldiers. - Majin Buu is another creation that was designed as a weapon. However, unlike Cell, who followed his creator's orders, Buu is more like a tantrum-throwing child who refuses to follow anyone's orders. And like King Piccolo, he also separates his dark side from him. However, it was caused by anyone who made him cross the line instead of being desperate for a promising position.
I think Frieza is a great example of a fine balance between rational and evil. He's not really a comic book villain, he doesn't do bad stuff for the sake of it. He has a reason. But he's not overly rational to the point that he does good, either.
Ah yes, one of my favorite anime villains ever. Dude was hardcore, killed literal BILLIONS of people/lifeforms and probably an equal amount of planets, sadistic and loves to toy with his prey, all while taking his time and with a dark sense of humor, even though he could kill them instantly with a snap of his finger. He's also basically the most pivotal character of the entire series, his actions is what got the plot rolling into the direction it did. (even if Freiza wasn't even thought of by Akira back in OG DragonBall).
What I love about Frieza is we’ve all met him at one time or another. That boss that abuses his power. That lady with racist tendencies. That kid who misbehaves knowing they’ll get away with it. All people we wish Goku would slap some sense into. Great video as always!
One thing that I adore about Frieza's fourth form is how to an outsider to the series it wouldn't look like much, but to someone who's been following Dragonball from its inception, it would've had a very subtle dread attached to it simply because of his appearance. Something that might not even be recognized by anyone on a conscious level. Like, throughout Dragonball, Goku was a kid, fighting threats that were way larger than him. The only real exception to this rule being his rivalry with Jackie Chun, who was far more evenly matched with Goku even back then. Toriyama - whether intentionally or not - was an expert in capturing that David vs. Goliath aspect. Every time Goku would go up against what looked like insurmountable odds and prevail. But then Saiyans showed up and something began to shift. Nappa - while depicted as brutal and more powerful than anything Goku had faced up until that point - was not the true threat. The smaller more devious Vegeta was. But even with Vegeta, there was comparable size with him and Goku being roughly the same height that then gave way to a more traditional David vs. Goliath dynamic as Vegeta tapped into the Oozaru. And then Frieza comes along. His first form is tiny and sadistic which is unsettling in itself as it feels like a child pulling the wings off a butterfly the way he brutalizes the Namekians and his own underlings. But then he transforms and gets bigger, more in line with villains that Goku usually stomps. Which - ironically - was reinforced earlier in the arc with how Goku utterly dismantles Recoome. But then there's the final form. Frieza is noticably shorter than Goku. I forget if it was a chapter cover or just art Toriyama did in the lead up to the fight between Goku and Frieza but in it, Goku is towering over Frieza who has to crane his neck back to look up at Goku. Goku is no longer David. He's Goliath, and at the same disadvantage as all the people he'd overcome in the past. And it was that subtle shift that helped Frieza feel so intimidating on a level nothing else that came before him really did and it was a brilliant bit of visual storytelling, whether it was intentional or not.
Not sure where to begin with how much I enjoyed this. "Guiltfully delightful" sums up my feelings towards Frieza as a villain perfectly; or rather, my own choice of words simply being "love to hate." He is not just my all time favorite Dragon Ball villain, period, but he is also up there as one of my top three favorite fictional villains in all of media (alongside Blackbeard from One Piece and Hades from the Nintendo 3DS game, Kid Icarus: Uprising.) So yeah, I could not have made a better video to describe Frieza even if I tried. I'm so glad TH-cam recommended this to me. Now I definitely need to see what other characters you've covered on your channel.

But it's absolutely a BLAST when I see get his ass absolutely handed to him. It's quite a rare feeling for a villain that makes him the most unique villain of all times.
Freezer in japanese always uses polite speech. He always finishes instructions in kudasai. So the first time I saw him, I thought he wasn't that bad.

You're wholeheartedly correct...
Freeza not Frieza.

Another aspect about Frieza I'd like to mention is the source of his kind of power or energy also reflects his character.
Examples: as powerful as he is he can't sense energy, at least when we first meet him, he needs technology when it comes to sensing or connecting to chi.
Which also further compliments Goku as his opposite
But also his ability to manipulate the physical world, where even in the tournament of power he is seen crushing Jiren with giant rocks from the arena.
This further implies his pure disconnect from spirit, he has no feeling to the spirit he is purely physically and his energies extend to physical manipulation, but nothing spiritually
This further compliments the relationship with Goku cause Goku existence is the furthest thing Frieza is capable of understanding or comprehending.
Perhaps the most frightening person Frieza can imagine is Goku.
These where just some other areas of Frieza I was worth mentioning.

I like Frieza vs Goku because they contrast in every way:
- Compassionate vs heartless
- Desire to improve vs believing in own infallible greatness

Freiza was based by Toriyama on the worst of scum, land speculators and rent lords
That was more what Frieza and his Frieza force would do. Hence why the conqueror planets and sell them to other races.
Given that he has an imperial army and empire that invades and conquers worlds, I can’t help but wonder if he was also based of any dictator or warlord.

I was about 8-9 years old when it began airing on Toonami and not only was I absolutely TRANSFIXED UPON THE TV when it was airing a new episode, but two things in particular are what really sold my generation on it:
- the foreshadowing of something called “The Legendary Supa Saiya-Jin” (aka Power Levels/measurable progression of the characters’s abilities)
- Frieza’s unparalleled depths of depravity & capriciousness tempered by that assuredness of their own level(s) of power
People can whine all they want about how Toriyama & ToyoTaro “rehashed Frieza” for Resurrection F, but really thinking about it…you can really see why Toriyama NEEDED his crowning achievement in Evil back in the “main roster” for Super:
Reinforce why none have compared since and continue his unending character arc of NEEDING TO BE THE RULER OF ALL!
Frieza’s big horned form / king cold is based off of Tim Curry in Legend. The other form is obviously Alien.

Oh yeah, sure friend.
Frieza reminds me of Darth Sidious, but unlike Palpatine, Frieza learned some humility and evolved his character along the way. He saw the importance of training, meditation and even teamwork. He even has a grudging respect for Son Goku
I was about to say this. Palpatine and Frieza are without a doubt at the top of fictional villains.
Frieza reminds me more of Darkseid.
@@carloszapata847 Frieza actually fights more often than Darkseid has. Darkseid usually acts through proxies and gets jobbed out to the stars
@@jeremiahmorris1852to be fair, his true form would instantly destroy any multiverse outside of where he resides
This lessens the character. Frizas is someone who commits genocide on a daily basis and is basically a racist. He shouldn't be evolved more and gain humility or gain respect for goku. He should be just kept a straight up monster This is why he should've stayed dead.
Frieza is the one villian in the series i think is beyond redemption, He's been so twisted by his greed and need for domination that he'll always be a threat
His recent shift in focus to being more amicable to Goku and co is literally only because being around them makes him stronger- if he had nothing to gain from the interaction and was able, he'd just kill them
It’s been 2 months since Toriyama passed, and I still get emotional when I hear other people talk about the impact he’s also had on their lives.
I have always found it interesting how Frieza’s empire is made of multiple races and and is not dominated by the rule and superiority of one specific race like most empires in real life and in fiction (eg Palptine’s empire had a human dominant sentiment and rule)
I’ve also had a theory regarding Frieza ‘selling planets’ as I’ve always found it strange what Frieza could gain from selling planets to poor races that he couldn’t just take with his power.

Or maybe the Xenomorph Queen from Aliens.
Full agreed. I hope that in the next tier list he is put at the top of S tier where he belongs.
I consider Frieza, Palpatine, and Morgoth to be the most evil fictional characters in history.

These are the reasons why Frieza is different from other villains:
- King Piccolo is the dark side of the nameless Namekian who was rejected by the previous Kami-sama because he found darkness in his heart due to his loneliness on Earth since childhood.
Frieza is so effortlessly evil. I have been waiting on this one for years.🔥

Yes I was waiting for you to cover this menace
