When Kenobi defeats Maul on Tatooine he takes Qui-Gon's fighting stance, Maul recognizes this and tries the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon, Kenobi knew he would and baited him into it.
Ever since I learned this fact I couldn't help but relate it to my style of Chess play. If I'm a move behind my opponent, I'll set everything up to check mate them but in order to not reveal the plot I'll make it appear as though I've left myself open for my opponent to take one of my important pieces baiting them to do what I want them to do.

Some things I realized almost instantly about Sidious vs Maul:
1.) Sidious didnt come to fight, he came to play.
2.) Maul wasnt begging to have his life spared, he was begging sidious to kill him instead of the other things he could do
3.) Despite his attempt to look the part, Maul was never a true sith. He still held compassion for his brother.

This video and the last one just supports a view I have had for a long time: Darth Maul is one of the saddest characters in Star Wars. He was evil, but only because he never had the choice to be good. He was ripped from his family and had his family ripped from by the Sith. He was used as a weapon for vengeance of Sith who were dead long before even his great great grandparents were likely born. He was used for nothing but revenge, and in the end, revenge was all he had... And he never had a choice or chance to choose a different path
You are correct about everything except, he always had a choice. Everyone does. You stand with evil or you choose to fight it.
Maul was not evil, he was not twisted through hatred and unpurity like Sheeve.

Even so Maul felt compassion for his family he was never fully turned into a sith. The reason for mauls perserverance is his rage but that is also his downfall. Palpatine taught him only revenge and that was all maul had.

If things were different I believe Obi-wan and Maul become friends but can't because of different beliefs (Light and Dark side) Idk but I just feel for Maul he was nothing but a puppet in my heart I believe he's a good guy but consume by hate which ultimately destoryed him. 🙇🏿♂️👌🏿✌🏿

Maul is one of my favorite characters in Star Wars and man, his death could not have been handled better. I absolutely love his final moments with Kenobi and it all shows how much Kenobi has grown. The respect Kenobi shows towards Maul is great.
I hated it at first.... being a die hard Maul fan ... it was just hard to see and hard to believe he didn't even put up a fight. But as time went on.. It grew on me and now I see at as the most beautiful death in star wars. :,) RIP Maul ... thank you Kenobi for the rivalry that kept Maul as savage as he was and for embarrassing him in his final words :') and may Maul live on forever in infamoumy 😈 from a one line, cool looking charecter made to sell product, to a serious presence in the galaxy ... surviving being cut in half after killing a master Jedi, to ruling Mandalore. Maul may not have been the apprentice that the Emperor wished for, but he was the character we all secretly wanted. :) bring Maul back please for a live action netflix show or even stand alone movie. That is all we ask! (We want more but that would be a start!)
Idk if you ever work with star wars theory, but the life of maul has a lot of good what ifs. What if he killed Kenobi, what if he and Savage killed sidious, what if he turned Ezra to the dark side, etc
This is some of the best lore I've heard come out of star wars. To think that a character that was so brief in the series of movies, was such a truly massive force in the universe. Darth Maul is one of the most relatable characters in all of star wars up beside Anakin. Season 7 of the clone wars and his appearance in rebels made me fall in love with his character, he lost so much and suffered so much, truly an amazing character in star wars history

@@rydout Well, for better or worse, Maul was at that point, more blinded than he had ever been in his life (living in trash heaps being insane doesn't count, as he was little more than a broken machine instead of a person at that point). he had no one, he had nothing, & he sure as hell couldn't do shit to the Sith that ruined his life. Obi-wan served as the only outlet with which he could vent all of his pent up frustrations on by the point, & that zeal to finally end things with Obi-wan had practically closed off every other option there was to his life.

This is why Darth Maul is the greatest character in Star Wars history in my opinion because he constantly has the theme of The Duel of Fates, and in the end it was perfect poetry and motion in that the man that he carried such a strong hatred for was the one there at the end and who would carry out his revenge for him. Such a beautiful ending for such a tortured individual who had many highs and so many lows.
Mall is such a sympathetic character because he was bred in hatred and evil and stolen away from his mother by the most evil man in the whole galaxy as a young child. He had no way to know right from wrong because he was taught wrong from the beginning and it is hard to change everything you knew. He had some semblance of wanting to do good and we see this in the ending phase of his life. He's probably the most dynamic character in Star Wars history with so much depth and a deep psychology. I hope the vile eye does a video on him.

I was re-watching TCW recently, and I picked up on two things about Maul that I missed: One is that from the time he took Savage as an apprentice, he never once required that he call him "Master". Savage continues to address him as "Brother" and I think that implies that even though Maul was following the structure of Sith teachings, he'd started to break with them in heart.
The 2nd thing I noticed is that when Savage first finds Maul insane on Lotho Minor, Maul says: "Mercy, master... mercy is a lie. A delusion of the weak to think themselves strong. I ask not for mercy". After Savage is killed and Sidious begins to torture Maul, he begs for mercy. His brother's death coupled with his fear of Sidious really broke him.
I think that that combined with his willingness to sacrifice himself for his mother only to watch her die, he truly renounced the Sith and he became only Maul.
I really enjoy these longer videos! I would love to see more timeline videos like this in the future.
How touching it is that in the end everyone maul loved, respected, of cared for had either left him or been taken from maul (mother, brother, Padawan, and even master). He had gone mad from being left behind but in the end the only one who was by his side was the one man he hated. The one man who maul hunted for decades, the man who took maul's legs and his brother's arm was the only one to comfort him and give maul peace. He was the only one to truly end maul's tournament. Maul lived through the war and saw his entire empire crumble before him but even after he took obi wan's master and his love interest obi wan ended his suffering and comforted maul at his death. He was the only one to truly give maul peace.
Just wanna point out how Episode 9 completely fucked up Maul's and Anakin's arcs.
Maul got to die knowing Sidious would finally be defeated, and Anakin was the one to sacrifice himself to do it.
But APPARENTLY Sidious just survives and that poetic and beautiful ending was ruined.
What's Episode 9? There is only 6 Star Wars movies.

Anything after Episode 6 should be considered un canon, there was no fucking reason to fuck up that ending.

Bruh I would've loved to have seen Maul's shadow collective vs the CIS on the big screen. So many people don't know about this and this is honestly the best part of Maul's journey and it's a comic of all things.
This is amazing, I’ve learned so much more after watching this. However the video also brought to light how much Disney disrespected and ruined the story with the sequel trilogy.

I think Maul was unintentionally given one of the saddest backstories of nearly any mainline character in the universe. He's gone through it all and is so broken the only emotions he knows are hate and vengeance. Will forever be on of my favorites. I don't think the writers at his inception knew the level of icon they were creating

Yeah that Obi-Wan and Maul scene got to me when I first watched it, they were at peace after years of rivalry just to end on the same level and with like minds...humbling.

Great videos thank you for explaining his in between story that isn’t shown in the shows! I hope they put his fight between grievous and duku in the last season of clone wars. Amazing job with the explanations and it’s nice to see someone putting time and research into a much needed video like this! The only problem I have is at 21:10 you said the last thing Kanan would see was the color of a red lightsaber but he regains his sight when he is holding back the fire from the fuel storage and looks back at Hera.
Maul always makes me sad because of how tortured he was, like most star wars characters. But he always seems like he has been trying to get ahead and was beaten back.

Wow. Just wow! Thought he was just a wasted character from Episode 1. He ended up with a better story than the Skywalkers (imho), so much depth. Thanks for the great vids!
I hate the way they killed Maul. He is my favorite character in all of star wars. I guess him being aknoleged by the wills as a really important character made up for it a little I just wish the fight dragged on a little longer.

Fun fact: Kenobi's final stance was Qui-Gon's, a way to honor his former master. Maul took the stance he used to kill Qui-Gon. Maul actually used the same exact move he used on Kenobi to kill Qui-Gon. By trying to bash his head and then turning to stab him. However, Obi-Wan was able to predict him as he knew Maul would use the same stance. This is why the battle ended so quickly.
Maul and obi-wan both lost everything due to sidious, sidious forced maul to kill qui gon and out of that maul killed obi-wan's lover but palpatine also took what obi-wan could call brother away and destroyed everything he had while maul lost his mother and siblings to palpatine as well so as they were rivals they were also friends
Excellent video of one of the greatest sagas in the Star Wars universe. No matter how many times Maul would fall, he would rise again showing just how powerful he truly was. Had Sidious went a different route with him, this saga could have turned out completely different.

I could see Maul training Luke to assasinate Palps and I think this would be a great what if story.
Just wish sideous wasn't a punk when fighting Maul after killing savage... if sidious hadn't thrown him with the force, maul looked like he was on the road to killing him in saber combat ... but then he just lifts him up and throws him lmfao same thing when fighting Yoda, he starting losing then ran away 🤦♀️ had to be saved by anakin after getting whooped by Windu... Palps was an old punk!
@@tori9365 Palpatine was one of the most successful sith lords to ever live and Maul can't even stand against Vader in combat as he said so himself. he never had the slightest chance of beating Palpatine, Palp would've just absorbed his anger and used it against him. He used the force against Yoda because he was coincidentally one of the most powerful Jedi to ever live and even then he and Sidious were equals. He had to be saved from Windu because his form specialized in absorbing sith energies and using them against the enemy. Maul had nothing special to combat Sidious and.. would've never been killed anyways. Sidious would've just fought maul until his will broke and then it would be no different from the actual result we got. You can't compare Maul to absolute god-tier Jedi like Mace Windu and Grand Master Yoda.
