I have a lot of not positive things to say and some not positive experiences with Mario Kart Tour I wanted to get off my chest.

When the servers inevitably go down for this game, everything will be gone forever. @@Crimson-Hat I've tried doing that, but the back cam is in such an awkward position and is so small that whenever I usually hit it, I end up suddenly steering to the left, which is so annoying. And I usually use the back cam to check if anyone is trying to aim at me or if someone is fast approaching. They desparately need to add support for some kind of controller so we can actually play the game like a proper Mario Kart game. The amount of times my items get thrown in the wrong direction, the game not registering when I drift so I steer and drag alongside the wall and just the game's overall BS with how it's actively a 7v1 with the AI actively cheating and teaming up on you, it makes my blood boil so hard, harder than any other video game I've ever played. And I played Fire Emblem Three Houses Maddening difficulty.
I'd had to send letters of complaints to the game's customer support so many times telling them to stop making the AI cheat against the player as it is actively enraging and so unfun to play, which is going to make players ragequit from the game. The only reason I haven't is because of the upcoming Yoshi Tour (at the time of this reply) adding more Yoshi alts and the Yoshi Mii Racing Suit. I love Yoshi, so I want him.

Based on my experience with mobile games, I think Mario Kart Tour as well as most of Nintendo's mobile games in general are some of the worst ones I've played in terms of gacha rates and F2P friendliness. For comparison, Love Live! School Idol Festival All-Stars has one version of every character free from the get go, an awesome story with lots of cutscenes, all songs available through normal means and can be played at any time when all unlocked (the only songs that are locked are unlocked by playing through the story), lots of content in general, and it's actually fun and F2P friendly. Mario Kart Tour only has Toad, Toadette, or Peachette available from the get go while every character including Mario is obtained via the gacha, no story so the only incentive to play is to grind for more characters, tracks only air for certain events, barely has any content beyond just playing aired cups to grind for the pipe, and it's a repetitive slog because it's just grind grind grind, and my god I hate missing those stupid event coins because it just makes the grind so much longer. Mario Kart Tour is terrible by Mario Kart standards, and it's terrible even by mobile game standards IMO.

LMAO good luck starting a new SIFAS account and try to do all the songs they've released, SIFAS is incredibly unfriendly towards newcomers, people that have played since release can barely be up to the new songs, and lets not even mention challenge mode
I guarantee MKT is more friendlier for you to start buidling an inventory and eventually get 5 star all tracks in a tour than you'll be getting close to S ranking all regular released songs in SIFAS.

    • @ivoryvt
      @ivoryvt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@97MiloProductions Oh, really? I got into SIFAS late last year and can confirm the exact opposite, and I have not spent a single cent on the game. Challenge Mode is hard, but that's because it's, well, Challenge Mode. I have a long way to go in terms of levelling my idols enough for it, but the path to it is at least actually fun unlike Mario Kart Tour. S Ranks barely matter that much anyway (even then, I've managed to S-Rank quite a lot of Aqours' songs on the hardest normal difficulties). It's all about the progression. Getting bond stories, playing through the story mode, events, etc. I only experienced a few difficulty problems around the end of Season 2 and in the intermission chapter prior to Season 3. Even then, there was a recent update that apparently nerfed the difficulty of those songs. While I think the Star Gems aren't too fairly distributed compared to some other gacha games' currencies, they still beat the tar out of the piss-poor distribution of Rubies. I always find myself getting into the hundreds with Star Gems just by playing through the game and not even paying attention to the Star Gems. Rubies I can barely manage to obtain fifteen when I clearly goal to get as many as I can. And don't get me started on Tour's gacha either. One of the biggest pains when it comes to gachas is when they put items and characters in the same gacha. Mario Kart Tour does that, SIFAS doesn't. The only gacha I've experienced worse than Tour's in terms of rates plus putting characters and items in the same gacha is Mega Man X DiVE's. One thing I can say is genuinely bad so far (aside from the fact it's a gacha game LOL) is trying to get good item equips for idols, but that's about it. Memory Keys can also be quite difficult to obtain as well, unfortunately, but nowhere near as hard as the equips. Part of what makes SIFAS so great in sheer comparison is the fact that there are far more reasons to play the game beyond just rolling for whatever in the gacha. My goal is usually to obtain as many cutscenes as I can because I like seeing the characters hang out with each other and have little stories. I already managed to obtain URs of most of the idols I specifically chose for my team, so I don't have too much reason to visit the gacha unless the difficulty spikes up too high, like in late Season 2, but even then the fact they recently announced difficulty reduction for that tells me that I probably won't have those kinds of issues moving forward. The problem with Mario Kart Tour is that everything is meticulously designed so that the only real goal you ever have is to either endlessly grind for an attempt to get a specific character, kart, or glider from that stupid pipe or endlessly grind out the event tokens so you can get a randomly selected character from the shop. At one point, it seemed like the event tokens were pretty easy to grind, but a few events later it suddenly became just as hard as getting Rubies, and then it never turned back. And even if people come for exclusive tracks, they air different tracks every event so you never always have access to whatever you specifically want to play, you have to wait until the event says you can play it. So with that being a bust, Tour's only real goal is just grind and hope you get lucky.

I think for me personally, the game just not being fun is the worst part. I could stomach the grinding and the gacha mechanics if it was fun to play, but it's just not.
    1. The game controls like ass. I know it's a mobile game and it's not really fair to judge it on this, but I feel like there are still better options for the control scheme than what they chose. Sliding your finger across the screen to steer is so finicky and inaccurate, and I feel like that's part of why they have the goddamn auto-steering cranked up to 100. If there's any sections in the game where you can fall off, like with certain ramps, good luck staying on the track....
    2. I hate the track rotation system. There are so many tracks that I'd like to play, but I can only play a select handful of tracks, and most of the track rotations consist of the same 3 or 4 tracks but just edited. Like I want variety, I really don't care about playing all 76 variants of Wario's Shipyard okay?? I just want to be able to play all of the cool tracks in the game and actually enjoy it!! It's so sad when the only ones in rotations are the really boring ones
    3. The edited versions of the tracks suck. Especially the T versions, where anything interesting about the original track is just replaced with these boring ramps that steer away from the exciting parts and make the tracks feel so much more bland...
    4. Because of the weird cup system that Tour uses, it doesn't feel like I'm playing mario kart - It just feels like a bunch of weird mini games. It doesn't capture the feeling of playing Mario Kart at all
    5. Because the game does so many things automatically (like tricks, throwing items, staying on track etc) it doesn't feel like I'm even playing anything, it's mostly just some idle karting game.
It had so much potential but this isn't a Mario Kart on Mobile, this just sucks.

    • @azurewhitetail9091
      @azurewhitetail9091 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

As far as the tracks go, I can get behind playing multiple versions of the same track. but what I CAN'T get behind, is playing the the SAME EXACT track, later in the SAME tour, but with a higher score requirement. With all the tracks AND variants of tracks that Mario Kart Tour has to offer, there's absolutely NO excuse for that!

    • @NunnyNugget
      @NunnyNugget 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@azurewhitetail9091 I think I’ve come to figure the reason they probably have like 10-15 tracks at a time in any tour is likely because they need to keep the file size small since it’s a mobile game and having all tracks in the game at once would take up waaaay too much space so they download a certain amount of tracks at the start of each tour.
It’s a reasonable enough explanation for why we have this (honestly pretty shit) compromise, but I still think they could’ve done better. First off why does the game even need such stupidly high poly counts? I don’t think anyone would complain if the game had graphics similar to 7 or even Wii, it’s a MOBILE GAME. Nobody should be expecting such stupidly high graphics for something on your phone.
As well as this, there is a stupid amount of characters in the game which undoubtedly take up a ton of space, I feel like it’d just work so much better if they just made a game like Mario Kart 7 and didn’t try to inject it with “mobile game disease” or whatever you call all the premium currencies and loot boxes and subscription services and huge grinding etc etc etc

You hit a lot on the flaws this game has that any genuine MK player who spent a good amount of time on any previous MK games would feel about it (which includes me of course), really well put. Here are some things I'd like to add:
    1) Recently the introduction of Miis is why I started to feel like I don't want to invest in MKTour as much anymore because my gut feeling is telling me the direction Nintendo is heading for this game is not going to be great. Getting the tokens in the Mii tour was so abnoxious that a lot of people would feel the same about this. And let's just say the tokens is just 1 thing for that tour specifically. The Mii suits are needing 70 freaking rubies on a _30% sale_ is still a crap ton and that equates to two 1st places rubies needed on ranked cups. Then the ones not on sale costs 100 rubies per copy (I'm thinking WTF). And even if you can afford the Mii copies, the amount of rubies spent to get Mii copies is suboptimal compared to using the rubies on 50 pipes to get more high end drivers/karts/gliders. In other words, it's not even worth leveling up these Mii skins (not to mention a lot of other drivers are already grinded at this point by everyone at this point if you played the game long enough). Going back to my gut feeling of the direction of this game Nintendo is heading, this shows the *cash grab* plan Nintendo is putting out there to make the gacha part of this game even worse. This feeling is why some people already want to not invest in playing this game much or quit already, since Nintendo is implying they want to make more money in this game among the gacha that already exists. Once you've played or seen gacha games where they head some sort of direction that's negative, it's usually proven that the meta game is going to be worse and the game won't be as fun.
    2) In your video you mention the grind to get the high-end driver you want, and all of that is true, but you forgot to mention this part: After all the hours and let's say you somehow got to 450 rubies (exactly for 10 multi pulls), you get that driver you desired for the current tour your high end driver can get triple items for frenzies on for certain spotlight tracks for the tour, they will be good of course. But the problem then lies upon how great _their value_ is in the long term of the game. For that tour where they are the hot stuff, their value is at the maximum. Then it's possible that in the next tour, they can only give you 1 S-I-N-G-L-E item for the ranked cup tracks. In other words, these supposedly *high-end drivers* aren't really that high valued for the game as Nintendo makes them out to be. It's quite common that one day they're godlike, the next day, they are TRASHHHHH. Well, if you really just care about getting your favorite character in the game and happy with it, then yeah it's great. But in terms of meta game, the value of high-ends are super deceiving if you're new to the game and only those with enough experience in MKTour knows that the value fluctuates so much even for these so called best things in the game. If you play for the meta game, then it give you that feeling like, damn, was all that time worth it?

I definitely think Mario Kart Tour is one of those games that aren’t as fun when you start out, but if you’ve been playing it almost regularly since launch it definitely gets better, plus I honestly think the game has gotten more F2P friendly, not nearly as much as say Dragalia Lost, but enough to where I’m not as frustrated

As someone who has been playing since launch, I still think gacha Mario Kart is weird. Personally, I think the combo system is neat and offers a different incentive to completing races that isn't just get first to clear everything. However, I don't pay any money for this game nor will I ever because I just don't care about the majority of the stuff they release (20+ Mario alts lmao). Plus, I don't really feel the need to care about ranked cups that much. I just play to complete the cups and get as many of the rewards I can get with what I have. Thankfully, being a player since launch, I've been able to acquire a good deal of drivers/karts/gliders, but it would be absolutely terrible for a new player to start the game.
When it comes to gachas, my general rule is to never pull unless I can guarantee I can summon what I want, and tour does have guaranteed content in the pipes. But I'm not going to spend the few rupies I get as a f2p player on every single tour. I only summon when the value is good (ex: multiple high-end spotlight drivers/karts/gliders that I don't have) or it is character/character alt I *really really* want..... The latter has yet to happen, as they are too busy giving Mario and Peach more alts. I've saved over 1000 rubies now and counting. I don't stress over the more grindy aspects of the game, but I get where you're coming from on those points. I just login, get my daily stuff, complete some of the tour challenges, and move on to Dragalia Lost. btw, based mention of Dragalia tbh.

You should just be able to use items and go for a ton of points by maximizing your action count instead of worrying about randomly getting three of the same item from an item set. Frenzies are a good idea, but in combination with the gacha system, it falls flat and makes the game too grindy. Also, Ranked Cup sucks. Throw that thing into a pit.

Some valid points, but as an og and mostly f2p player, i have to disagree on some points. Like, i only spend on the gold pass and thats it, well, have bought two packs in all these two years, but thats mostly it, havent spent anything more and im doing pretty well on the game, even started getting the top 1000 badges without being a whale.
The game has gotten really generous since its launch back in 2019, the diddy kong pack meme doesnt work today as it worked back then. Nintendo rewards all the basic characters for new players, and the daily shop was updated to include better high end items and tickets.
Now when it comes to the gacha, they also got more generous with them. The 50 pipes are the best option you have in terms of getting high end items for less rubies, and you can wait between tours to save rubies and just pull whenever you see a good item or a character you want in one of the 50 pipes.
Also, and after looking at some of the footage, you seem to not do good at ranked cups because you level up the wrong characters. You have to keep an eye to characters appearance rates through the ranked cups and see which ones are more worth to level up, not just the ones you like, because those will end up going to waste.
And about the points system, the online multiplayer mode exists... Pretty standard mario kart experience without the worry of grinding for points, especially the 150cc or 200cc, 1 or 2 items rules. If you want chaos, the frenzy rules are also fun but that one gets problematic because it do touches gacha ground in terms of characters needed for the frenzies... But the 1 or 2 items rules are pretty fun and you can use any characters in those and any kart and glider combination.
Overal, tour has gotten really generous to f2p players, especially compared to how it was back then.

As a MK 64, Wii, DS, and Wii U veteran, I can confirm this is infuriatingly frustrating. When you begin for the first, it's quite somewhat easy to win 1st in rankings. When you get to Rank 50-60s, EVERY BULLET COUNTS. You either do or don't do. If you can manage to get into the top 3, don't let your guard down, check daily. If it's the final countdown, keep the game going to make sure you're safe until time is up. If you're stuck in 4th and 5th and can't do anything else, do anything you can to survive. If you fall below 6th, well, nothing can be done. Grab all the loot you can, save your rubies, and wait til the next tour. You may be shot down, but you ain't done YET. You may have got a bitter loss, but with all the loot you collected and power up received, you are prepared for next time it comes around. My friends, I wish you luck.
Also, Giant Banana and Coin Box Frenzies are your best friends. Use them to rack up multiple hits and points. That's how I stole 1st place with a whopping 89,409 points thanks to the DK Mii suit. Stole that Rosalina Mii Suit from that guy who came out of nowhere.

Score system is cool and items don't lag nearly as much as in other mk games in online play.

As a F2P player and someone who enjoys this game, I found this review very interesting and well constructed. However, I would like to provide some additional thoughts to your points.
It is true that ranked cup is an endless cycle of grinding and frustration, though I wouldn't say that it is exclusively P2W. If you want top scores in All cup ranking and reach tier 60+ then yes you need to pay loads of money but you don't have to do all of that. Reaching the highest tiers will give you absolutely nothing in the long run, the rewards you get are almost non existent. There is no point to all of this, you don't need to take any of this seriously!
It should also be mentioned that the game has become quite generous, giving many valuable gifts for free plus the spotlight mechanic removes some of the gambling aspects (as long as you save 450 rubies you'll be more than fine).
In addition, ranked cup is not the only way to experience the game. Multiplayer is pretty great and it is 100% F2P. You don't need to have that many stuff to be competitive in it. There is no need to grind or pay attention to points, it is pure old fashioned Mario Kart. I treat multiplayer as the main mode of this game and I am very satisfied with my experience! It is way less addictive and a million times more fun than the insanity of ranked cup. Also the competitive scene in multiplayer is very accessible and friendly.
What I am trying to say is that we, as consumers, ought to be smarter and more selective. You don't need all the drivers, karts and gliders to do well or have fun. This is a fun game but it is designed very predatorily. With the right mindset, you can work around the gacha/P2W mechanics easily.
    Anyways, great video overall! 😅😁

I just find it depressing that Tour was even designed like this to begin with. Because the idea of a mario kart game for mobile users isn't a bad idea at all. And while the game itself is really good in terms of it's tracks and characters, the core goal of this game and how you earn shit is just so obnoxious and energy draining. And the fact that Mario isn't a starting character like past mario kart games is really baffling to say the least. Especially for a game that LITERALLY HAS HIS NAME IN THE FUCKIN TITLE!!
As for my experience with the game, I've played a good chunk of it when it first came out and had a pretty decent time. I didn't think it was as bad as people thought at first and didn't really worry about the gacha shit too much as I was just here for classic Mario Kart gameplay. But as I kept playing it just got more and more repetitive until I've reached a point where I just had enough. I probably would've still played it from time to time if I wanted to, but I can't even do that now because Nintendo gave me the finger and was like "yeah this game doesn't work on your cheap phone anymore, sorry." It's not a huge loss for me as I already stopped caring about the game at this point, but it still sucked for me (and many others who also played this game on a cheap phone, probably) because that's one part of the game's accessibility lost for some people.
Yeah I could've just bought a new phone that had the specs to run Tour so I can continue, but money's tight for me and I rather use it on stuff that's actually useful for me. Besides even if I wanted to continue playing, again I just don't give a shit anymore and would much rather leave the game behind and consider it a lost cause. Especially now that the booster course pass for mk8d has tracks from Tour in it. Leaving Tour behind was more of a blessing in disguise if anything.

You pretty much hit every nail on the head with this game. I stopped playing a year ish ago, because I was really tired of the pay-to-win bs. But, against my better judgement, I reinstalled...and bought the gold pass. I'm in my mid 40's in level nd a good chunk of my stuff is at LEAST lv. 2. All I'm doing is saving my rubies to get those pulls hoping for the high-end stuff for each tour. And like most luck based stuff, it's hit and miss. But MAN, your points in this video hit hard. The grinding, the luck, everything. The game's kinda fun when it's in your favour. But...it rarely is.

I have never spent a dollar on tour and I have a decent roster also compared to how the game was at launch the game is more friendly for free to play players like me. Also the game is pretty fun I actually like the point system as it gives a reason to replay a course. Also the challenges are an easy was to gain rubies. Also there is another form of currency which is tokens. Like right now in the mii tour there is mii tokens. That you can gain by playing as mii's in tracks. These tokens can be used in a separate shop in which you can by rubies, coins, characters, and more.

You have to have a certain mentality to play Mario Kart Tour. It's very completion unfriendly, but if you don't care to get all characters, max level or first every ranked cup, it's very fun trying to chain combos and get frenzies. It just tickles my brain.

The main things I like about tour and something I’d like them to add to a new Mario kart is just an actual grind. Console Mario karts have a small short grind to get most things. There may be one really hard to achieve thing to get but I like the constant grind and adding new things to look forward to not just grinding the entire game to get one rare character or cup. On that same coin the ability to level up drivers karts and gliders and their points to achieve higher scores on maps you’ve already played would be a great way to add more replayability to console Mario karts. With that I love the combo and frenzy system as it makes you utilize different drivers for different maps instead of sticking with the one or few favorites you have. The combos and frenzies add replay ability as well because it’s a slight rng element that can make every play different which is something we don’t really get in a console Mario kart, the also combos give you more incentive to grab coins on the map and play more strategically. Every play through in mk8 or otherwise is more or less the same and the bots aren’t too challenging you can typically reach a point where you’re miles ahead of the rest of the bots in a normal Mario kart and have little to no concern about losing. MKT is a constant challenge the bots are never too far behind you and every game can play pretty differently depending on what dkg’s you’re using and how they’re leveled. I like the idea of a rotating ranked cup that’s outside of multiplayer it could add another way to get fun rewards and add a competitive aspect to the game outside of online multiplayer. instead of a new tour every two weeks it could be a score reset every month that brings ranking to another cup, whilst maintaining the rewards and levels you’ve gained from previous iterations almost more like a prestige system. All these things I think could make a new Mario kart fantastic and could exist without a severe amount of or any micro transactions.

as someone who has never touched tour, i couldn't even follow what you were talking about during the entirety of the section on the game's systems (tours, cups, tickets, rubies, exp, bonus points, boosted exp, etc). it sounds incredibly complicated! i'm used to mario kart being a game where you boot it up and just play against other players locally or online, and that's it. this sounds like a classic gacha game with a racing minigame technically included so that it can count as a mario kart game. the point is to make numbers go up so other numbers go up so you get something that can help you achieve something else, all with no real end goal. you get so wound up in trying to unlock and upgrade stuff that you totally forget that you originally booted up the game to play mario kart.
as a side note, although i'm not the best person to judge as someone who has never touched the game, i think my opinion is valid as someone who has played pretty much every other mario kart game to an exhaustive extent: the gameplay in tour looks breathtakingly horrible. the physics look so slidey, as if the player isn't even in control of the vehicle, ever. i have never seen a clip of someone playing tour that doesn't feature taking every turn strangely wide and hitting walls (which you don't actually hit because the game gently guides the kart back onto the track no matter how badly the turn is taken). in any other mario kart game you will see players taking tight corners with an incredible sense of control, but from what i've seen, that doesn't seem to be possible in tour at all. I'm sure there's skill involved that i can't perceive just by watching, but i'll be damned if you ever catch me touching a game that looks that unsatisfying to play.

A lot of the times I just end up wasting my time with games because I naively followed the "don't judge it till you play" rule, which sucks because it's easy to tell if a game is good or not simply by looking at a simple clip. There's a lot you can glean from just 2 minutes of gameplay, such as mechanics, how it looks, and you can even gauge how it plays as well if you're even slightly observant. Saves a lot of time by just watching a video instead of sinking hours into a game just to get to the good parts that you wouldn't even know about if you went in blind

I never really got into gatcha games because of the mentality of
"if you want it, you either gotta work for it and/or pray you get exactly what you want or pay and pray you get exactly what you want without spending to much" (especially for being someone who like collecting each characters in a game)
I tried fire emblem heroes years ago, played it for less than an hour then immediately deleted it.
Not that long ago I tried princess connect because I loved the anime of it. Played it for 2-3 days, then deleted it.

However I will most likely not stop playing the game holding the hope that maybe in the future the game might become more friendly to free players.
besides getting first place in tours was simple for me:
    1. Wait a few days during the cup
    2. See how far everyone else comes
    3. Look at your own characters you have
    4. If you think you can win, you drive, otherwise you do nothing become last place and drop 2 ranks down making it far easier to get first place.
This has worked for me for a long time and gotten first place quite a few times (although since I'm low rank the rewards are also less).

Fantastic rant! I believe I retired from Mario Kart Tour over a year ago, I can't remember clearly but I am so glad I dropped out. Of everything you said I HATED the ranked cup matchmaking, the banner system and how sparsely you get rubies the most. Mainly the ranked cup bullshit! Once I ended a ranked cup where my final placement sent me back a tier with no rewards, I was done. If this game was gonna match me up with other players who are clearly richer than me, then its not fun anymore. I already had too many mobile game mouths to feed at the time so someone had to be dropped.
Interesting that you bring up Pokémon Masters EX because with Mario Kart Tour out of the picture, it has become the game where my luck with banners are the worst especially with the events tied behind new banners always screwing you over from getting the rewards you want along with new strategies I see to beat other challenges that require a load of units that I just can't pull.
Of the mobile games I play, I would have to say Final Fantasy Record Keeper is the best F2P friendly of bunch. The game has recently turned 7 and it has become more and more forgiving with premium currencies and content to collect.

I actually enjoyed starting with a random character and having to unlock others, but, the gacha elements are inherently demoralizing. Very sad to see Nintendo has gone this route for phone games. I've been playing Tour since launch myself, almost every day. I'm kinda okay with Tour and its mechanics, even with its points/combo system (I will agree on grinding for points being trash). I don't really mind grinding or luck based mechanics all that much to begin with, and I typically have the mindset that just ignores most microtransactions so I focus on the gameplay.
That being said, I was thinking of dropping the game as well, mainly due to the lack of fun factor. I like the alts and new courses, but everything else is whatever, and I just wanna move on to something else. I was thinking of dropping a couple of tours ago, but then they added Sky Garden and Miis and I was like, "alright, one more go, since they're adding new content." Maybe THIS time I'll drop it, before the next tour.

I've been playing Mario Kart Tour since beta and am finally getting burnt out. I only really bought gems at the beginning a few times. I used to do Gold Pass, but stopped over a year ago, going totally F2P. Now I'm getting outpaced and outranked. Can't keep up. I'm not a fan of the city-themed levels and sports-themed characters, not a fan of the auto-steering, and even though I'm very good at controlling the game and have a huge amount of muscle memory for it, sometimes I accidentally drop or fire items during a drift against my will, very annoying. The online races are basically flip a coin. I can consistently get first place just about everytime against the AI, but in online, sometimes I dominate, often I get trashed into last place. Very inconsistent (and frustrating) results despite all my years of practice and leveling up.
