    Honestly the mobile game market drives me to insanity. Phones are becoming powerful little things capable of playing games fairly well, and they could be great devices for gaming if the stuff released for them was good, but instead almost all major phone releases are absolutely drenched in microtransactions. We could have gotten a legitimate Mario kart, a legitimate fire emblem with gameplay and story just as good as the console games, but instead we get dumbed down games that only exist to separate you from your money

    • @sajohnson09
      @sajohnson09 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Back when they were actually making good mobile games people werent buying them and some of the controllers back then were shit awful. Sony had that Xperia Play which was basically a Psp Go (I thought that was a fantastic phone even though I never owned one) but there weren't many PlayStation games or supported games general for it.
      Now we have pretty great controller support for phones and trash ass games for the most part (unless you're streaming of course), it's a pretty unfortunate consequence of being too far ahead of the curve.

      but actually, emulation has been a great and viable option for ages now, it just isn't exactly convenient, as you either need to dump a rom yourself or sail the seas to get them elsewhere
      most bluetooth controllers have worked on android for a long while now and the few that don't work by default, but will connect to your phone often will work in an emulator due to the ability to bind the buttons manually
      and any controller that specifically is for mobile, but doesn't mention anything else is likely to be of very poor quality, though thankfully those are rare and more often you'll see controllers that list a number of systems they work on, usually being windows, mac and android, though sometimes also listing more, such as some controllers mentioning switch compatibility

    Having played Tour on and off since its launch and occasionally going back to it cause there was new tracks I liked being added I'd usually see the game as not very newcomer friendly, I reinstalled recently after about 5 months since I was busy with other stuff. Most of the stuff I had from before was still pretty viable in ranked and put me at ease since powercreeps tend to keep me away from certain games, especially when real money is involved like with FEH.
    Now that ruby pipes were removed you can spend your rubies on your favorite stuff available or things to get more coverage, plus they added a lot of stuff to the gold pipe you can fire after clearing a tour, I think the game has become more newcomer friendly, plus I've seen people use that multiplayer pipe and get A LOT of useful items like tickets or rubies, so while I'm still kind of 50/50 on the removal of the gacha with how expensive the spotlight shop is I think it's leaning more towards the positive side. Now my only concern is if the game will continue to make as much revenue as it did when the gacha was still active since I still really like it and wanna see what other city tracks they come up with.

    An argument that is often made by F2P players is "you just need to manage your resources better" which to me is an infuriating argument. The limited time thing is really bad on crossover events because once that's done odds are very likely that they'll never be able to do again. I know the sting of gacha games.

      This is absolutely true!
      It's even more painful when there's a VERY short time on certain banners for whatever units, equipment pieces, etc. But the pain gets even more difficult to deal with when said units or equipment pieces absolutely redefine a meta of a game. The closest thing to a gatcha game I’ve played recently is Xenoblade 2. It’s definitely an outlier among gatcha games in that there are no microtransactions (besides the DLC if that counts) and instead of spending premium currency to purchase core crystals (the things you pull Blades from), you have to continuously defeat monsters for them, most often superbosses once you get to that point since they drop the highest tier crystals. It’s definitely better than spending real-world currency, and it can actually be quite fun once you get a grip on the combat system, but I’ll admit that it can be frustrating not getting the Blade you want when that means having to farm crystals (and boosters) for another hour or two.
    It is good that the difficulty of the game isn’t too dependent on what Blades you get, and the guarenteed Blades from story events or DLC are pretty strong too. If Xenoblade 2 is to waste anything, it’s your time.

    I remember spending I think it was something like $20 on the little pack for chances to win at the little crane game thing that they had a 3DS back in the day and after I got everything I still felt dirty about it because it was one of those things that even though I got those little decorations it didn't feel right at the same time.
    It's been years since and nowadays I treat myself to a newer or higher value game every 3 months with the budget of about 100maybe 120 for something like a collector's edition or a rare game.
    My sister always makes fun of me for that but she's the type of person who will spend $150 per week on stupid mobile games so yeah I don't know I think I made it out of head when it comes to that.
    Plus I do end up with a physical copy as well as a few trinkets and in one case a very nice Saturn game

    Great video, thanks for reminding me to never fall for gacha games again.
    I used to play a f2p game where I invested near $300 over the course of 3 years. Ik it's not much compared to what other players have spent, but it's always a friendly reminder to myself that my money and free time are more important than getting the ultra rare super special extra cool cosmetic or character a game can offer. After I quit that game I fell right back for a very similar one. I still did put some money into it, but the total amount was near $30. After a year I quit yet again. Since then I've spent $2. It's a new f2p game with gachas, yes, and the only reason I play it it's because it's based on a show I really like and it's actually quite entertaining and accesible. I decided to put 2 single dollars on it because it was garantee that I would get a certain character thanks to the common first time recharge bonus.
    I was never someone that had an addiction for spending but still, anytime I might feel the urge to press the purchase button I look around. I look at my pets, my collections, my pc, my room and all the wonderful, real and tangible things I can afford thanks to the money I work hard to earn and don't waste on pixels. Honestly, at this point not spending on f2p games isn't hard at all. Ik what's truly worth focusing on life and the greed of game companies isn't it. Also, that Botw sequel isn't gonna pay itself ;P

    While I am happy the Gatcha system is gone, I do have some mixed feelings about it. Without paying any money I’ve been able to consistently get a few high end items every tour (granted they weren’t usually anything I specifically wanted). It’s cool you can choose what to get now, but the ruby prices feel a bit high considering the rate at which you get rubies feels the same. If the drivers were only say 100 Rubies and the karts/gliders were 70 I’d feel like it was fair (but then again it’s not like the micro transaction are gone, Nintendo still want your money lol)

    I'm sure I'm not the only one to bring it up, but the "gacha" part of gacha games is actually only in reference to the "lootbox" part of the game which started with the gachapon games in Japan. In-game currency that can be purchased is not part of the gacha descriptor.

    I personally actually like mario kart tour. Its not an amazing game but it is mario kart and it is on your phone so the convivence of it is great. I have no desire to spend actual money on the game so the gatcha elements never really bothered me and its definitely doable to obtain rubies and thus high end characters without spending any money at all. The same thing happened with Diablo Immortal. Both games demonstrate why gacha games need to go.
    If you spend money into digital characters it's almost similar to nfts, however, the difference is that a nft will always be less than what you pay for. Th is is also why I only buy digital games on sale because it is not a physical copy that I can hold in my hand. Streaming games is just as bad because you're essentially just borrowing games not actually owning them.
    This also shows the dangers of gambling. That being said I have never played Mario Kart Tour. Thanks for the heads-up Nintendo Black Crisis.

    This is a great video! As a veteran of gacha games, i wholeheartedly agree with you. The important thing with the games is to take one of two tactics; the first is the one you mentioned (pulling for a high end but not a specific one) which is usually an easy route if you’re a new player and not emotionally invested yet. But once you get invested, that can be harder to do due to duplicates. The tactic I follow is a different one that I find equally effective: saving every single gem to hit the pity system and guarantee getting what you want. Its actually why I specifically do not play gacha games without pity systems anymore. If I don’t have a guarantee, I do not pull. So in my mind, every gacha banner just becomes a shop to me, and the price of what I want is whatever amount it takes to hit pity. If I hit it sooner than that, its like a nice discount lol.
    As an example, since you seem to play Genshin as well, the upcoming banner for Nahida. I’d been closely watching leaks ever since her design was leaked and I decided I wanted her. Back in update 2.7, I was just casually pulling on a limited banner for no one in particular, then lost the 50/50 to Jean (thanks Jean!). So with that, I know I’ll get Nahida in 90 pulls when her banner comes in 3.2. So since then, I saved up 90 wishes worth of gems (i do pay for the welkin moon, which for those who don’t know, its $5 and gives you gems daily for logging in. i’m an adult and can afford $5 haha). After saving up 90 wishes worth, I would then idly spend whatever other gems I got on the weapons banner since thats a separate pity count. Then I saw her weapon leak and stopped pulling just in case I want it, so I currently have about 180 wishes saved. She’s coming out in a few weeks, so by then I should have around 200. Plenty enough to get her and her weapon, though the weapon isn’t guaranteed (and I’m not upset if I don’t get it)

    • @vincenthall5908
      @vincenthall5908 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, ultimately, the only reason I can follow this tactic in Genshin as a gacha game is for a few reasons
      1. The lack of pvp means I have no requirement to get every character, just the ones I want
      2. The pity system rolls over from one limited banner to the next limited banner, so losing the 50/50 in 2.7 means I’ll still be guaranteed to win the 50/50 in 3.2
      3. I am strong enough of a person to be able to save and not just pull for every character I see lol
      So I think it works out nicely for me. I only spend the $5 a month for welkin, no more than that, and I have a very large roster of 5 star characters. I have more than half of them and have been playing since launch. And my fiance has been playing for a few months less than me and never spent money and he has a pretty good setup too. So, Genshin I feel is an alright gacha system, as long as you aren’t someone who is prone to spending money anyway. I have some friends who drop money to get every character on every banner, and people like that genuinely shouldn’t play gacha games.

    I think the reason Heroes is still Gacha while Tour isn't is because Heroes is for Teens and Adults who have money to spend/can understand the trappings of Gacha. Tour meanwhile, is a Mario game, which is probably being played by a lot more kids. Having kids deal with insidious Gacha mechanics is not a good look, so that could be why they changed it.

    There was new content in this game but a lot of it was being paywalled and the gacha is so predatory that it makes it evil towards a younger audience and becomes a big chore. I can finally say the removal of gacha was a big thing and thankfully there is no more gambling to it. This is a major step forward to stop addiction and one step closer until the game dies. Even after all this, however, I will still not play the game and is still the worst game ever. Thankfully no more gacha and I still can't wait for it to go away for good. • @Skylancer727
    @Skylancer727 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah I know for a fact that removing lootboxes doesn't actually means the game will be better. In fact a lot of companies have used this to drastically overprice the products instead afterwards with many having no ways now to actually earn things without paying. Halo 5 had lootboxes that gave OP weapons, skins, and vehicles; well Halo Infinite took most of that stuff shoved it into the paid battlepass and direct pay store (though they did remove OP weapons). COD and Overwatch did the same as Halo.
    I've also noticed that retroactively removing it can be pretty abysmal. I played Star Wars Battlefront 2 after they removed the lootboxes. The idea was now you could earn all the gear just by playing, there's just one problem, the gear was all made to be overpowered to encourage you to buy it. So now if you wanted to come into the game you are at a huge disadvantage as people literally have buffs making them deal 50% more damage, only take 50% of the damage of you, have skills you do not, an weapon attachments that can make the guns have higher fire rates and range. So while the game isn't unfair without paying, it's now just completely unfair.

    Thank you SO MUCH for making this video. A lot of people can't appreciate how addictive Gacha mechanics are, and your example may help people a lot. Hopefully someone sees their own experience in yours. I know I did; I almost got caught in the Gacha web as a F2P player when there was one particular character I desperately wanted and logistically couldn't get. I know how addictive it can be, and how much it takes to resist the dopamine you get from the thought of having that character.
    One time, I came across a forum where Mario Kart Tour fans were discussing the game, and one player started a thread asking a question like, "What are the odds I can get [Spotlight Character] if I have 120 rubies?" Which sounded innocent enough at first... but when I kept reading, she said, "My husband and I have a monthly budget, and if I don't get [Spotlight Character] in 120 rubies, I'm going to ask him if I can use some of our budget money to buy more." That is very shocking and worrying to me. I've also heard some horror stories about children taking their parents' credit cards to buy rubies so they can get the character they want, which is easy to understand with how cutesy and kid-friendly the game's presentation is.
    All of this is to say, I'm very glad the Gacha mechanics have been removed. At the very least, even if the ruby prices for characters in-shop are now outlandishly high, the predatory Gacha mechanics are no longer luring people in and addicting them in a way that the shops simply cannot.

    The only Gacha I play regularly is Fire Emblem Heroes. I rarely if ever spend money on it, mostly because the game gives you so much of every material for free, including orbs, the currency used to summon heroes, and only heroes. You can't get bullshit materials. One time though, I spent over 100 dollars to get all 4 5* focus characters on a banner and I have regretted it though.

    Not to mention gliders, Karts and Mii Costumes

    The worst 50 "No Spotlight" Pipe, besides the King Mario one, has to be Tanooki Rosalina. Once people got her or Tanooki Mario, they showed off the new Super Leaf item and was complete TRASH. Whales consider the Super Leaf to be one of the worst items in the game because it has a hover mechanic that can completely kill your combo, especially on trick course variants. The Bubble item was considered the worst in the game, but as of now you can actually get pop it early by tapping it, so now the worst item goes to both the Super Leaf and Mushroom Canon. To add on to this, Nintendo has not made another character with the Super Leaf item since its first appearance in October 2021, and when they added White Tanooki Mario back in August 2022, they gave him a Coin Box instead of the Super Leaf. Nintendo rarely put the 2 Super Leaf characters in pipes since they deter whales from pulling, and with gacha pipes gone they'll still avoid Tanooki Mario & Rosalina.

I’ve play FEH since it came out and I’ve only spent about $60 USD on it and that was after three years of playing it. Main point don’t spend money on a game to enjoy it spend money on games you enjoy, just keep a very strict limit on how much to spend

    one thing i look at with games with a gacha system is what happens to dead draws. in most youre stuck with useless items. in others they give you some method of making use of them. in overwatch this was by giving currency when you already owned something. in one i play every now and then it lets you turn useless pulls into a currency that allows you to trade it for upgrade items. others ive played pretty much said sucks to be you and just keeps sending you useless junk and is skimpy on the freely available currency. from what ive heard of genshin its the latter of the three.

Everyone spends real money so that they can get multiple copies of rare, OP cards in Structure Decks while I'm sitting over here earning gems by levelling up my characters like the broke bloke that I am. I'm never in the current meta because it takes me ages to put a Deck together just using gems that I actually earnt.

    I want stuff but I don't want to go through the stuff to get it.... Nobody FORCES YOU TO SPEND MONEY. IF A GAME OR COMPANY HAS BAD PRACTICES and you don't take part.... The idea fails ... They change but people shell out money for shitty games bc it's Nintendo

    • @princetbug
      @princetbug ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be true and it'd be real cool if taste wasn't a factor. some people just like the characters or the games are among very few that appeal to them, so they're more or less forced to cooperate if they want to participate in anything new. that is where the frustration comes from.
      the overal monetary landscape of gaming just needs to change. this idea of pay to win has been around since the arcade days, but at least then the games kept players in by *being fun* and a desire for satisfaction / accomplishment which is in essence the purpose of playing a video game. even then it's not great. there are definitely better methods that don't entirely throw away your game's fun factor just to make money.
      it can be so easy to just say "don't support it" but when you have an emotional attachment to something (which is not a *bad* or invalid thing in general) and the company decides to use it against you your options are miss out and hope they get better or bite the bullet-- maybe the lure would be more accurate. the problem then becomes copyright I suppose. noone else has the rights to make anything better and so it well never happen. isn't there something just so depressing about that?
      TL;DR yes, people should probably make better choices but in cases like these, **don't blame the consumer for complaining**. it solves and fixes nothing.

      @@princetbug there's alot of stuff in games I want and I don't buy bc it's not worth the money, if you stop shelling out money for anything these people put out they'll change the business model. Yes blame the consumer bc it's absolutely an unneeded item half the time. Clearly if you buy it, it's not too expensive

    • @princetbug
      @princetbug ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lotusman1711 it wouldn't be a problem and people wouldn't spend money if it wasn't tried to begin with. there is very little an individual consumer can do besides complain about it.
      don't blame the consumer who's complaining about the issue, and tell them to simply not support it. that's just excusing the company for being predatory. It's still completely on the company to then actually change business models ever. simply not paying typically just means they switch markets away from YOU as a consumer and over to people who ARE willing to pay.
      one and not the other doesn't help. nobody gets what they want.
      also we're not talking about unneeded items here. we're talking about games where the core design is to pay money to progress. microtransactions for cosmetics is a bit of a different issue.

    • @princetbug
      @princetbug ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lotusman1711 like seriously, all these games need are a small number of whales who truly fund the game. they don't give a shit about your average consumer not giving up what is pocket change in comparison.
