To me there is no better song written about the plight of the teenagers of our nation during the early 21st Century than this song, The lost hope of teenagers growing up 20 years ago is still relevant in 2024 and this video shows it off perfectly.
It’s even bloody worse now.
65 year old here
I’m In my 20s and me and my friends been into vintage bands for ages . That’s why we have the internet it’s like our own record store tbh. We share bands from all times from the stooges and the voidoids - The Vines and etc

YOU MADE ME FUCKING CRY MAN. REAL NOSTALGIA RIGHT HERE
Fifa '06. This song makes me want to cry. Damn how I miss my childhood when my life still had promise
Every day is a new opportunity, even if hard times seem to only keep coming
😭
😢 😢😢
You still have promise
We all do
Your life only loses its promise if you keep believing stuff like that homie
After finding this it brought a tear to my eye, FIFA 06 memories
those where the days
Nostalgia
Bro. I caught the exact feeling when i heard this on the radio today. First time ive heard it since i left university in 2007. Very nostalgic tune
Just made me have a flashback good times good times
I read this message literally after nearly tearing up
2006..... the best year of my life so far. I was 15 years old and my country hosted the WorldCup. This song and FIFA06 reminds me of happy times and a fantastic summer 2006. I miss these days (and also the game) sooo much. Life was so much easier back then.
Same here. Finally we felt what are the elders felt when they said, "my childhood was great" in the time of our childhood day. 2003-08 are the great days.
It was a great world cup. I saw each game at a diferent place, bars, beach clubs, etc. Nowadays I hardly go out.
Isso, war genauso alt und es war der geilste Sommer meines Lebens. Dazu bin ich noch Italiener lebend in germany :D war schon geil damals... so unbeschwert
What makes life more different and difficult for you ?
Great Time thé 2000’s bin heute 31 . Die 2000er waren eine tolle Zeit, unvergessen ! 💙 für immer in meinem Herzen . Bis ich eines Tages gehe. WM 2006, PS2, PS1, FIFA Football.
The most underrated band of a generation.
Best live band I ever saw!
This song deserves way more attention than it got.
The Doves deserve way more attention than they got.

The lyrics to this track and the video are a perfect reflection of the desperation associated with growing up in small town UK, most prominently in the north. Every one of these towns should have a direct free bus route on an hourly basis to the big cities so that the people who find themselves cornered in such a town can escape the dreary depressing life they have been born into and explore civilisation!
There is so much to this track and the video that resinates with me. The world has moved on too quickly for some places and those stuck in small towns are left behind, trying to cook up any entertainment they can for themselves which for the young, normally borders criminality.
This is a masterful reflection in both song an video, a perfect storm analysis of modern Britain.
I've never gone to the UK, but that's what I felt about this video, teenage anguish.
That's so articulate. Thanks.
stokiesteve71 while I agree, the cities are just grounds for being stabbed nowadays so I know what I’d rather for my children.
@@ThatRunnerAaron You can be stabbed anywhere nowadays Joe. County lines drugs supply to small towns has seen to that. There may be more crime in the bigger cities but that is because the are more densely populated IMO. I suppose it depends where you live though Joe and different experiences in different parts of the UK. I dare say that living in St Albans is a different experience to living in Widnes. Both are smaller towns on the outskirts of large cities. Dunno Just my thinking mate.
Joe Macdonald sucks right? my town had a huge field mostly used for football and walking dogs but now they cut it in half to make a new neighbourhood
I grew up in Glasgow and this is exactly how i felt. At 16 i forged my fathers signature for a passport and left for Greece. After travelling to 35 countries the sadness is still there. All the therapy in the world can never change how you feel .
Wow now covid has everyone feeling like this am in Sweden btw👍
Never look back. The past is a wilderness of horrors.💀
@@maxshade2935 nice advise, bro.

I can not even explain the nostalgia trip I get from this song. Reminds me of when I had no single worry in the world except for becoming a footballstar. Back when I would play soccer in the street with friends in my Ronaldinho jersey.
Life looked so easy and full of promises back then. How time flies..
Agreed. Well said. . Miss those days
travelled outside Africa to the UK for the first time played footy on the uk streets and enjoyed it
Then you grew up and realized the hell you really live in, i know the feeling
No wonder you didn’t become a football star calling it “soccer”, whatever that means
Life smelled different back then
Quite simply the greatest music video ever made. When this came out if perfectly mirrored the lives of me and my friends. Some of those lads are dead now. Killed by drugs, shot in Afghanistan, stabbed... But I watch this video back fondly and remember when we were young and it was all to play for. Fuck I miss them days.
Joe Chill do u mean some of the boys in the video are dead or your friends ? Cos one is my brother and he died but it was nothing to do with drugs or any of the other shit u just said
He just means that it inspires nostalgic thoughts in his head, it's actually quite a compliment to how right the video gets somethings about British culture because this inspires a few memories for me too.
Alan Davies love the song And especially cos my brothers in the vid
@@elleleonard892 Fair enough i'd be as well, which one is he btw?
See he didn't reply
They managed to capture what it's like living on a chavvy council estate in some shithole (I mean Black & White!) northern UK town unbelievably well. I remember hearing this song and thinking that, and then I saw the music video was LITERALLY what I imagined in my head when listening to it.
How they captured something so accurately through sound alone is remarkable.
This feels special to mid 90’s kids, the final 20th century generation, growing up in a world that was changing faster than we could keep up with, and clinging to a time gone by. The bridge between the old and the new. Nokia to an itouch, Bebo to Facebook, the PlayStation to the Xbox 360, fat grey tellies to HD flatscreens. We got a taste of technology but it didn’t dominate our lives. We had nice clothes but it wasn’t all skinny fit overpriced branding. We had cameras but didn’t document anything and everything for the hope of a ‘like and share’. You went out and played, had sleepovers, traded Pokémon and Match attax. Now you’re obsessed with micro transactions, meeting through screens, and wasting the days away online, addicted to social media, projecting unhealthy fantasies. They’re becoming artificial, soulless almost.
Great comment mate. Sums it up really.
You hit the nail on the head. 2000s had just the right balance of technology. After 2009 things started to go downhill fast
i felt this so much
@@Tomrogersmusic- i feel most people were happier back then, its not just our generation. My parents were also happier for sure
Exactly. I feel truely blessed to carry that youth. Technology went so fast even though if you look at we had, seems now so old.
I think our youth really enjoyed more and was more pure then nowadays.
Doves' music feels so.. I don't know, british. I've only been in London, but their songs make me think of the british north, or, well, the way I imagine it. Damp weather, maybe a little rain. Sky heavy with clouds. Grey, unresting sea. Endless plain green hills. Friends hanging out by a little road, their bikes on the ground, next to them. This could be completely wrong, of course, but I love it.
Nailed it.
Someone out there listening this masterpiece ? Have a great 2020
I'm listening to this in May 2020 I'm 61 and fucking loving it!
Great 2020!

Totally captures and bottles the fun and danger, tears and laughter of whole underclass of kids who are easily despised or patronised. There's magic everywhere.
@@stevenchampion8137 I agree
5 years too late to say but the best comment ever on TH-cam
You saw magic in kids beating up each other and smashing stuff up in this video? All I saw was f**ked up lives and sadness.
I remember downloading this song from Limewire and listening to it on my iPod Nano.
2021 and still one of the best alt rock songs around.
People from around the world..
Welcome to the real Britain ❤
Such an underrated tune in my opinion. Not my favourite band by any means but one of my favourite songs of last ten years!
Aye, + lost interest with Fifa in the world of sobriety, but this TUNE's aged well & glad was on a BeeB 'Arts Programme' reminding how amazing it is. 😍
having lived in the north for a long time i can confirm this. add in some of the friendliest people you will ever meet and some of the most casual violence you will ever see and its pretty much spot on
Today I heard this song after a long time and it took me to the best years of my life, playing FIFA 2006 with my cousins, we got excited and went to a park to play soccer, I miss that time, we were free and without problems, that I remember now it becomes the best of dreams, I have always said "Music is the only time machine I know"
true from letter to letter
Don't know about the fifa thing..but Doves have been with me for a very long time....Class Tune From A Class Band.
please continue
Always will m8..Doves forever :)
Richard Coles You don't know about Fifa? Best football video game in the world
Yea ikr. Im still trying to suss out the meaning of this video. Some young kids that think they're hard who like punching cushions and football and are violent to women. And also about sitting above a motorway writing stuff on a converse shoe?
its trying to make people understand life In an English council estate - the lowest you can get socially speaking
life is so beautiful, yet so tragic. here’s to all the youth, to all those who remember this from our past, and to those who are no longer with us. i hope we can all make it out one day, whatever that means
One of the greatest songs ever
Love this song so much.... As some people have said before, this is England's national anthem!!

I've always found this song to be really emotional....it's quite haunting....I think it's because I feel so sorry for the kids in it..but at least the little one gets out in the end 😄
Lol the little one that gets out at the end... Hes my best mate lol,
@@UrbMuh the ones I know of were just locals from the estate .. Only part of it was filmed in Toryglen .. not sure of the other areas but I’d assume if they used locals when they filmed in Toryglen they would’ve done so elsewhere .. that being said my friend (the boy in the arsenal top) was actually doing some acting at the time ,had been in some short films etc so maybe a bit of both 🤷♂️

An incredibly accurate capturing of growing up in Glasgow in the 90’s, you can actually see Liddlesdale road in Milton at 1:31, lived here for 27 years and I so desperately long to escape this black and white town. The scenery, the feel and the upbringing, Doves described it perfectly here.
The video describes my childhood almost perfectly. Fuck Fifa, What a song!
Jesus fuck you
Great song
Jesus I thought you died for our sin how come you're here
A truly great Mancunian band for sure !!! An anthemic song for 12&13 year old British kids !
Good God. What a band, what a track, what a video! Perfectly captures the boredom of a working class teenage life. Yass Macclesfield!

Can relate to this 100% -grew up in a grim satellite town in Northern England and made it my goal in life to get out of there as soon as possible and as far away as possible. I went to university on the other side of the country then moved to Asia after that. Places like that can toughen you up but also hold you back in life.
2019 and still as meaningfully good as ever. Found on fifa then grew to understand the meaning of the song later. It's actually very suiting because fifa and football in general is a common pass time for the British youth that inspired this.
I remember going out to buy this CD in 2005/2006 when you could still go to a CD store and buy CDs. Of course, I couldn't find it so had to order it through the store. I hadn't heard of the band before and this was the first song of theirs I heard on MTV2 when that was still a thing. Anyway, listening to the album was a different sort of treat. Phlegmatic but so ardent at the same time. It's not pretentious in any way - I don't feel bogged down or super hopeful...it's just enough to keep me going and I like that.
Latest Brassic brought me here - episode 2 had very tiny bit in it, and needed to hear the full beauty in full again 😊
My favourite from the last 30 years.
Thanks Doves.
Timeless and unforgettable song and video. And way ahead of it's time, with the angry and frustrated kid wearing the Arsenal Jersey.
Remember playing Fifa 06 on the PS2 with me dad during the school holidays or after playing footy on a weekend. Any combination of teams, Barnet vs Barcelona, Accrington Stanley vs AC Milan. This song brings it all back.

The intro gets me everytime I hear it. I go back to 2006 and being pregnant with my 2nd child. It's the drumbeat and piano that's haunting but brilliant
Filmed in Glasgow and directed by Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Callar, We Need To Talk About Kevin). Brilliant that one of my old favourite songs is directed by such a legendary movie maker as well!
Doves are finally back! They are touring and releasing a new album soon
thank you fifa 06 for this song. LOVE IT!!

Larga vida a Doves.
definitivamente me siento identificado contigo, aunque fué en mi niñez!
This video is the most accurate representation of Britain you will find
If you're a chav, sure.
They keep this side off t.v. until they want someone to patronise. This is literally what I grew up amongst, and it's everywhere. I escaped long ago, but I can vouch that this is what Britain looks like, at least to a lot of us.
Alfex ... should be grateful for social mobility then.
I grew up in council housing. But through qualifications hard work and self belief I’m now firmly ensconced in a middle class way of life.
Being wealthier is better, if only for financial reasons (nicked quote from Woody Allen I think?)
