This record came out two years after my mom passed. My family and I spread her ashes on 37th St in Newport Beach, CA and the moment we did, seaguls flew over us. Whenever I watch this video and every time I hear this song I'm reminded of her. She was a beautiful soul and I'm grateful to have discovered Doves back then. They got me through a lot of hard and happy times in my life.

Shoutout to Neil Newbon, the actor in this vid! Always enjoyed his understated but powerful performance here, his subtle looks and expressions really help the drama of the music itself land, but never knew who it was.
After over a decade I see him in the Resident Evil behind-the-scenes videos, doing some sterling mo-cap and voice work, and I can swear I've seen him somewhere else. Wasn't until I came back here I figured out where from. Glad he's going strong!

I really like how in Zombieland, they made the scene where the music plays similar to a lot of the scenes in the music video. I always liked that scene where they're just driving along and looking out, just goes great with the music and even better because it's kind of dedicated to the original music video.

    I hear a sound
    A sound above my head
    Distant sound of thunder
    Moving out on the moor
    Blackbirds flew in
    Into the cooling towers
    I'll pack my bags
Thinking of one of those hours
    With you
    Waiting for you
    My god
It takes an ocean of trust
    In the Kingdom of Rust
    I long to feel
    Some beauty in my heart
    As I go searching
    Right to the start
    The road back to Preston
    Was covered all in snow
    As I went looking
    For that stolen heart
    For you
    Waiting for you
    My god
It takes an ocean of trust
    Takes an effort, it does
    My god
It takes an ocean of trust
It's in the Kingdom of Rust
    In the Kingdom of Rust
    I long to feel
    That wince in my heart

I am a father of 3 lovely children that is currently in a custody battle. Alas, British courts are decades behind every other country and they always favour the mother. I'm preparing for the worst, which is horrendous for a father that was always very involved in my kids lives. I'm gonna go from seeing them, taking them to school, cooking for them, reading bedtime stories and all the rest every single day to seeing them every other weekend. It's breaking my heart.

For those of you who don't know - and there seems to be a lot of you - this song is about a town in the UK called Wigan.

I'm from the North of England, Preston in fact, which is mentioned in the song, but I don't live in the North anymore. This song brings back so many childhood memories of going for walks with my parents in the hills when it snowed. It had that rugged beauty which this song really evokes.

This song combined with its incredibly atmospheric/romantic video is very moving and quite heart wrenching. A son taking a long, long drive to spread his parents ashes, a final drive with that parent in the car with him in spirit. The little flashback to his childhood at the end of the pier the perfect addition to set the sad scene.

All part of a healing process for him. Some never really get over a loss and bereavement as its too much to bear. Sometimes grief gets stuck and complex and needs help to process and shift. You could say these 2 scenarios are the same. But. No, some losses are so profound you don't know how to come to terms, others you try to shake off but they catch up with you. It doesn't mean that you won't ever feel yourself again in both circumstances. It needs time and the courage or honesty to admit you may not be as okay as you seem. I do remember this gorgeous song and when I saw the video, I did think of someone I knew. Very moving.
