I think many of those voices actually are from the US, maybe UK, where indeed today many black people are present, but they might have no idea about central/eastern Europe, where it's quite rare to meet any black people. Especially in all the countries that are former Soviet states (as we saw in the map in this video).
Or they know there are basically no black people there, even today, but they don't care and it's strictly ideological, because they think "representation" is the most important thing ever.

@@RenaudKyoku In the Czech dictionary, "diversity" does not mean people of a certain race, orientation or faith. :D Diversity means diversity in the environment = landscape, houses, monuments, and also the behavior of NPCs, which should be more realistic and shape the atmosphere of the given time. And also gameplay variety = improved combat, more gameplay options, such as developing your character as a personality based on decisions. That's diversity. ;)

    I'm ignoring LGBT voices.
Kingdom Come Deliverance has a homosexual character and he is handled very authentically. He has given himself over to be a monk in order not to give in to his desires, and you have the option of giving him a personally supportive word. "That's not my business, it's between you and Our Lord." when he is worried you're going to mock him. Iirc when the interaction comes up you can mock him, show fear, or offer him encouragement in his difficult spiritual walk. They handled it perfectly, for giving the option to be respectful and remaining historically accurate.

This whole "controversy" is purely American thing. It can be boiled down to "uneducated people are assuming stuff". They don't know anything about Europe in middle ages or even just Europe or just middle ages at all. They don't know how long, expensive, tedious and dangerous was traveling in that time and thus they don't know than very few people actually traveled outside their kingdom even once in their life time... most of people in middle ages didn't even personally knew someone who did. If anyone traveled anywhere it was for a very good specific reason. Most commerce done between mutually exotic places (like Africa and Central/Northern Europe) was done in Mediterranean ports and goods (like ivory) changed hands many many times before they got from lets say Ethiopia to Germany or anywhere in that geographical space. There were very very rare black people there but all 3 or 4 of them were servants at court of richest nobles and they basically never left his palace because their purpose was to pour drinks and more importantly be a living proof to his guests how rich he is... literally 0 chance to meet them in person. The most "exotic" person you could realistically meet was an Arabian/Jewish trader who tagged along with an envoy from some middle eastern kingdom to Rome and other important seats of power.

As for myself being politically left I seriously dislike SJW's and completely disagree with them, I like accuracy in historical representation or in the race/sex of existing characters and hate it when those tools get involved. So next time you are about to say "the left" remember that you are saying the equivalent of "the right are all racist" and remember to add the word "extreme" or "Far" before left or just not say "the left" and be more correct.

Same. Not all of them of course, but some of them go way too far with their 'activism'. During the Hogwart's legacy release for example, SJWs went around harassing anyone who streamed the game, even bringing one streamer to tears due to the constant harassment they received. Same stuff on reddit, constant attacks not just at people who played the game, but even people who were just like "eh, I don't think someone playing the game makes them a transphobe" would be called transphobes.
Those people 100% deserve every single bit of pushback they receive because they make their entire movement look bad. They're the equivalent of those idiots who camp in the middle of a busy street and block people who have places to be. No one stuck in their car for an hour is going to have an ounce of sympathy for whatever those people are protesting.

No he's not. He's hated by the SJW section among the extreme-left. That's quite a difference.
Especially using American political definitions where 'leftwing' translates as 'anything with views that don't rank as clinically insane such as saying being poor is always a choice, or women feel happier without human rights and with bombs going off at abortion clinics everything'.
Which means that 'left' is meaningless since it's 98% of opinions.
To the more sensible definition tons of leftwingers don't care about enforced American 'diversity'. The conservative left for example. The Dutch Socialist Party as a concrete example voted against the 2005 forced-diversity bill and their ideas are quite different, for example they are openly pro-Iran, pro-Russia and anti-Jewish with anti-semitic chanting a staple of their demos for 20 years now.

  • @flankerpraha
    @flankerpraha 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I am a Czech from Prague. Prague naturally is the center and most cosmopolitan city in the country. And, even now, in 2024, it is extremely rare to meet a black person here who is not a tourist. It is not so uncommon to see an Asian person here, as they are running some business (mainly Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants and some other shops), but that's a matter of development let's say last 50 years. During communist era Czechoslovakia served as a place where people from developing countries is Asia and also Africa studied based on political connections between the "Eastern block" and these developing countries. As for Asians, they were first who was settling here in some higher than negligible numbers, built ties that provided further influx of mainly Vietnamese people. Still, there are only around 38,000 people living here who declare Vietnamese allegiance, with other Asians it might be some 45-50,000 people and that is the development of as I said last 50 years. As for black people, yes, asi I said, there was a some influx of African students during mainly 80s and 90s, but it occured very rarely that some of them settled there and even with recent refugee Wavesthe number did not increase recognizably, which also applies for people from the Middle east (we are not destiny for them). So as I said it is still very rare now and if so it is the development of the last quarter of the 20th century and 21st century. So imagining 15th century Bohemia as somehow ethnically diverse area when it comes to non-Europeans, is really bizarre.
Something like that would be extremely rare and could only occur on some very specific conditions. Yes, let's say some Italian merchant visiting mostly Prague could have a non white servant for instance, but putting such character into the game would require explanation of the background of such character, and while meeting with such character the other characters would not take it as normal but would be curious "who are you and how did you get here".

Now, I am not saying there is no black person in my city, but I doubt there are any significant numbers and if I was making a game about my city, I would not portray it as 2024 NYC, I can tell you that. I mean, if you choose something else than male or female, there's a very high chance you'll just be treated like male or female anyways. They weren't that eager to burn people unless they literally caught them in the act of having gay sex.
Though it interestingly wasn't all bigotry.
I remember reading about the case of a person who was born with both male and female sex characteristics and who was raised as a girl. Later on that person fell in love with a woman and wanted to marry them, which obviously they couldn't just do like that because well, same sex marriage was not allowed. This person was able to go to a court and manage to be legally recognized as a man instead after proving that they had male sexual characteristics, which meant they got the go-ahead to marry the woman they loved and were granted all other legal privileges of being a man.
A lot of the time, the people back then weren't outright hateful, they just weren't sure how to categorize certain things and unless the subject was gay sex which the bible explicitly condemned, there often was a bit of room for negotiation.

It is interesting that no one has yet mentioned one specific historical source that describes an encounter of Czechs with African blacks in the 15th century. In 1465 (about two generations after the story of KC-D takes place), the King of Bohemia sent an envoy to the Duke of Burgundy, King of France and King of Portugal. A member of the delegation was a young knight named Václav Šašek of Bířkov, who left a lengthy travelogue. During a visit to Lisbon, Czech diplomats saw black slaves imported from Africa and asked the Portuguese nobles about their origins. Václav Šašek recorded this episode as remarkable.

There was a story from the 14th century, I believe, of a archbishop or cardinal travelling through Bohemian Kingdom from Rome and encountering a milleress who was so devoutly religious she bought her own Bible. There might have been strong women in Medieval times, they definitely did not act or look the way we imagine them now. They would be effectively the head of the household, as it sometimes also happens today, but would have to let the man (or command the man) do his masculine duties outside their house and when interacting with the outside. When you look into the stories, tales, fairy tales of old Europe, you find many stories of basically matriarchal families and households. It was just still in the context where patriarchal hierarchies and households were more common.
