Removing stripped oil drain plug with Channel Locks (2014 Cruze)

  • I tried to remove the oil drain plug on a 2014 Cruze but the 10mm socket stripped the head of the bolt. I tried to beat a 9mm socket on but that didn't work. Vise Grips didn't work, just made it worse. I cut a groove at the edge of the bolt with a grinder and tried to beat the screw off with my linesman and screw driver, that didnt work. I also tried an extractor........ you guessed right, didn't work. I was ready to give up until the lip of the screw gave me an idea. So I grabbed my Channel Locks and grabbed the outside of the screw with the jaws and viola, the screw loosened.

    I want to give you a huge thanks man! I am out in the 90 plus degree weather trying to change the oil on my daughter's car and ran into this very same problem.

    The funny thing is that I was nearly going to try a number of the methods you said didn't work for you.
    I hadn't even considered this channel lock method before watching this TH-cam video.
    You saved me a ton of time and frustration.
    Thank you for this video!

      I'm glad the video helped but I mostly applaud your effort of 1-1/2 hours trying to get that bolt off. Before I found my solution I gave up after 15 min lol. Thanks for watching.

    Life saver!!! I was crying like a girl already because I tried for hours and it still wouldn't come out. I even took it to Valvoline and instead of helping they rounded that sht completely, that's when I lost hope...until I saw your video!

    • @TheCreativeMind
      @TheCreativeMind  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you felt, almost cried thinking about taking mine to the dealership. But I'm surprised your mechanic made it worst. Overall glad I was able to help.

      @@TheCreativeMind That was a typo bro, it was the guys at Valvoline that rounded that sht completely (Only place open on Sunday) but yeah the mechanic who did my oil change before this is at fault also because he torqued that btch with and impact and rounded the head of the bolt (It wasn't like that)

    • @TheCreativeMind
      @TheCreativeMind  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-sv4ev5qg1u wait he tightened the oil drain plug with an impact driver!!!! Da faq was he thinking. I've grown to not trust mechanics and its hard to find good ones. At least you got a new bolt now and all is good. Be well

    Love how GM put “14 nm” right on the pan but used an extremely cheap and weak plug. Rounded one off at work but fortunately the boss had a set of twist sockets that would hammer on.

    Looks like I'm gonna have to find my channelocks and give that a shot, all with replacing the bolt afterward. Thank you for the video.

    As soon as I saw it was a cruze I knew I found the right video! Trying to get my off after taking it to a well known shop out of town, they probably used a drill that's why I like doing my own work!
    I'm going to try this, thank you!

    Great information, sir. But I ended up having to utilize Freeze-Off spray, the channel lock pryers, and my socket simultaneously. In the end, success was achieved without stripping the drain plug bolt (though I will be replacing it upon the next oil change). Once again, thank you.

    Buy an aftermarket drain plug. Dorman makes the plug same size but with 16 mm head and stronger metal

      Not all channel locks are the same. The cheap ones have the teeth pointing outward while the better ones, more money, have the teeth pointing inward, these grab better. I have the Channel Lock brand. Either that or the bolt may be fused to the pan. But that may be unlikely

    My issue is actually from the inside of pan. the screw when i try to tighten it, just keeps going clockwise and wont tighten. the outer nut is fine, its from inside Im assuming. any thoughts?

    • @TheCreativeMind
      @TheCreativeMind  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely your threads are stripped from over tightening. 2 ways I know of fixing this is option (1) a "spring" is made to go into the stripped thread in the pan and a new, possibly smaller, bolt threads into the spring. Auto places should have this "spring" that I mentioned. I saw this on Detroit Muscle a long time ago. Option (2) is to replace the oil pan.

      If you haven't removed your filter yet go for a drive to warm it up. Works for me a lot. However if you already removed your filter, try warming the pan and bolt little with a torch.
