      Yes - I removed the fill plug and was able to pump out the old fluid so I got the fluid changed. I wish there was a way to put a regular 14- or 15-mm drain plug. These hex plugs are a real pain since they are soft metal!

    I am in the same position! Mine was stripped by an otherwise very good shop who installed my front locking differential, or rather the kid who did the warranty required 500 mile gear oil change stripped it. I just saw it the other day and called the shop, they said no problem, bring it in and we will put a new (Dimple) plug in. This kept me from being angry, them not fighting with me. I suppose I could have got it out myself.....but then I would be angry and not proud even if successful hahahhahaha (My plan was to try to make the "hole" a 11 square drive as I have that in my plug removal set). Headed to the shop right now!

    With the size holt a small bolt welded in. You only need to hit 2 sidesof bolt or nut or combination of both. Plus the heat from welding helps as well.

  • @louie4316
    @louie4316 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I use heat first, then the same method you used. Hammer with a cold chisel, comes out every time. Those 10mm hex plugs are prone to strip, even though it's only tightened with 26ft-lb which is nothing. If I owned a welder I would tack weld a 17mm nut to the plug.

    I'm having trouble with my stuck gearbox drain plug, it has I half inch square drive hole. I am using penetrant, heat, breaker bar, half inch drive impact driver and hammer, rattle gun, repeat again. Am going to try heating the casing and an icecube on the nut then breaker bar with extension. My nut is smaller so the chisel and centre punch is a good idea but will have less leverage. I am concerned about stripping the threat since it is so tight, but that probably can't be prevented, hence the penetrant spray.

    I never use the quick lube places - they are inexperienced, up sell unnecessary procedures and often cross thread or use the wrong tool to remove bolts. I serviced the transmission and discovered the last mechanic that did the job cross threaded the pan bolt. I will find out on the next service whether the transmission pan's threads are damaged too.

    I was delivering parts for O'Reilly. The quick lube place ordered oil and filter for a Ford F250, diesel. They called me stupid. Because I brought the wrong oil filter, they needed the top one. Confused I drove back down to the shop to see the lube tech beating the filter housing with a hammer and diesel fuel smell flooded the shop. Told them I couldn'thave that housing until tomorrow. Customer was waiting.
