In the early 70's inSanta Cruz on the West Side there was this girl just sitting outside a small store next to her backpack. I went inside for a snack but as I left I was just drawn back to her. So I turned around and I asked if she wanted to take a trip down the coast with me. She was headed up to the City but had no hesitation at all and off we went. We drove down to to Bixby Bridge and jumped the barb wite fence and checked the Big Sur River Mouth and beach then went down a bit further to what is now Andrew Morela State Park and we hilked down to the Little Sur River Mouth. We had both beaches to ourselves. We left and I dropped her off where we met and she assured me she was fine to get up to the City.
It was months later and my friends and I are on a surf trip to Willow Creek way on the other side south of Big Sur. I was showing my buddies Rampart Range Road when we dive by this hippie gathering off a small road to the right. All of a sudden there is this hippie chick screaming my name running down to meet us and it's her. She leans into the car and gives me a big hug and we catch up a bit while my friends sat slack jawed as if I didn't mention she was gorgeous. We parted and waved goodbye and I never saw her again.

Each of us have these unexpected and amazing experiences in our lives. I have different ones than you have, but the feeling they gave us and the feeling the memory of it still gives us... that is what makes life. I am constantly reminded what a wonderous place the world is.

I hate to say but it took me 2 weeks to clean up a site where about 200 rainbows came through. They brought in but did not take out. Hundreds of trips back across a creek to my car , 10 miles down the road to dump 10 miles back..1 to 2 trips a day and finally i had it clean and back to normal.Castle lake 2011.

That is because us real spiritual beings are outnumbered and this is not just gatherings. My partner and I clean up our area whereever we go, whether it be the beach or the woods, negative people litter and us beings that care about the earth and her creatures clean up their mess. It's their karma ultimately. Continue the good work!

Anywhere you go there will be some that leave their mess behind for others. It's not right, it's certainly not appreciated , but it happens. Maybe they should start policing their gatherings once it's over so that nobody leaves a mess for others. I took my son's camping and taught them Leesburg it looking better than when you found it. Respect nature and yourselves.

Thank you so much Star for (filming) and sharing this gathering! It was a joy to watch and it made it clear again what life is about : living from your true essence back to your core. What is the essence of life? (is what I googled), this was the answer :
The three basic elements for living from your essence are gratitude, connection and trust. If you are grateful for everything that is now, you experience a loving feeling. Thanks again Star. Xx

I appreciate the light you are putting on rainbow gatherings as how me and my man have traveled to many. The one you went to seems as though it was a parking lot gathering. I saw some familiar faces and although some things are similar every gathering is different and magical in its own way. There is a whole rainbow road. There are regional, There are annuals, there are nationals, it's a beautiful safe space for people from all backgrounds. Thank you for showing the water filtration, the movie movements, the heart circle, trade circles, kitchens, and most importantly another coming together of family. Thank you for representing it best to your knowledge. Many people who nowadays shed so much false information and just so negative without even experiencing it themselves.

Truth is, there is a lot of money involved in these gatherings - it is a heck of lot easier to enjoy this type of escape if you have a nest egg or SSI or parents/family from whom you’ll inherit.
It’s fun to think we are above it all but truth is truth.

Lots of resourceful homeless folks, "train hoppers," show up. Once they do, there is free food, camping, and drugs.
I was annoyed at having to spend so much of my time searching for food, but t hey are pretty much used to that.

One does not have to go far to find a kitchen at Rainbow. There is sometimes a donation jar. Dinner is served in the centrally located Main Meadow, where the magic hat walks around. "Tea Time" which serves free teas day and night, has a 2 drink minimum.
--"Hobo camp", by whatever name, is populated by some very interesting people. "Nick at Night" walks around with buckets, into which one can deposit or remove cigarettes. "Kiddy Camp" is family oriented. Often, they rig up swings and things. At noon on July 4th, they parade into Main Meadow. Silence is broken and dancing begins. Sometimes, hammocks are available for lounging at "Safe Swinging". "Fairy Camp" is what it sounds like. "Stitch 'n Bitch" has chapters throughout the country. For entertainment, there is "Granola Funk Theatre". In the Wasatch mountains, a USFS ranger on a horse once borrowed a guitar, started strumming. Whether they know it or not, the police are our brothers.

There are fakes, phonies and imposters in the rainbow family and you have to weed them out. Not all hippies are bad but some of them definitely have a few screws loose. A lot if us don't even attend the gatherings anymore because they are not what they used to be. They started allowing anyone to attend and it became a mess. It was originally started by real hippies in the 60's, with good intentions and real healing vibes. Some of us new age cats follow suit, but beware, there are imposters for sure.

They came to our small town and lake in the seventies. There were a lot of them, and many were disgusting. They'd go in the stores, and take pickles out of jars and put the jars back. Grab a couple of slices of bread out of the package, and use their fingers in the peanut butter. They left the lake a giant litter covered mess. I was 17, and thought it was going to be cool, it was not. They have given hippies and communities a bad reputation. They were nothing like the Hippy I wanted to, and still do, want to be.

I was 18 yrs old, and it was the furthest I had ever traveled away from my home in Indiana. It was probably one of the most unique, and most amazing moments in my life. It's neat to see the movement is still going, and newer generations are joining the Rainbow Family.

In 1969 my local park allowed a love in. I went to the love in. My experience was people laying around in large tents, smoking pot talking about a bunch of random stuff.
As a nine-year-old kid I couldn’t give a crap. When I was 22 I went to work for a large corporation. I worked with World War II veterans, Vietnam veterans and hippies. There was a lot of disagreements in the break rooms.
The only thing that’s changed about hippies being hippies is their age. They got a lot older. Yes there’s younger ones, but they weren’t there when it all began.

But being a forester for years and seeing this group in many different states, I’ve seen this group leave so much trash even BBQs and legit metal sinks behind at campgrounds. Wrong. I think you are thinking of the anti-hippy bubbas celebrating 4th of July with their big ass equipment, beer cans, fireworks and 4 wheelers that mess up ecosystems and streams way more than foot prints of people. I stayed and cleaned after Wyoming. (2 fires. One set by a local which was more serious and another from a camper setting their tent too close to a fire which caught a tree on fire. We had hundreds of people passing buckets of water and were able to put out the tree fire)
      - Every camp is dismantled and yes, sometimes the clean up crew had to dismantle an uneducated groups' camp. I picked up toilet paper and cigarette butts so there are idiots who attend for sure but you can't say that as a practice, the gatherings have left large amounts of trash. There is even a seed group that reseeds trails unless the forest service decided some trails and bridges were to be left. I call BS and there has been documentation about how the sites were left. Look it up. love n peace

What fairy tale world do you live in where everyone is just like you? Wake up! There are people with addiction, mental illness which could be anything from bi polar disorder to depression and beings that have real pain whether it be mentally or physically. Some people absolutely need psychedelics, which is a far healthier substitute from prescription pills, drugs and alcohol. If you ratio a psychedelic of your choosing properly, it becomes a medicine and it can heal mind soul body, celestial spirit in one. We are all individuals. We are all different. Open up your third eye and stop putting your narrow minded judgement on others.

That is because those are fakes, phonies and imposters. The real hippies started the gathering in the 60's when there was real love and psychedelic healing. Most of us new age hippies that are pure of heart don't even attend the gatherings because of the fact that they started allowing anyone to attend and even making separate camps for those beings. They just use it as an excuse to get all effed up and do what they want. They get their karma ultimately and those of us that are real, clean up their mess.

These events fluctuate..... They breathe.... Sometimes they are so big, no one knows what to do... But then they get down to the core individuals... The ones that really believe in the event... And that's what you have this year... These people have found strength through diversity.... And when you do it's hard to let go .... We are the apotheosis of George Washington..... These festivals and parties, it's basically how this country was formed.. nowhere in the world does communism exist like it does in our country.. our constitution protects our brand of communism.... When we leave these events we want to share with the rest of the world the love , camaraderie and unity with the rest of the world... These Dynamics have made a huge difference in our society as a whole.. I don't know if they will ever stop being a thing... But the more we grow closer together as a country, through these parties and festivals that basically unify us.. the more the vision we have that we see from these festivals and parties we go to, becomes the reality we see in the world... Then what set out to achieve is done.... It wasn't about just partying.. it was about coming together.... And loving each other...❤.. God bless 🙏

1982, rainbow gathering was a nudist camp of a few thousand people. Unfortunately I only found out when I got there. I traveled from Canada through United States down to the bottom of Mexico mostly by bus and hitchhiking by myself. It was completely different than. About 2 months before the Gathering people arrived to scout out the area and plan everything ahead of time. I didn't have hightech equipment just a backpack, two-person tent sleeping bag in a few extras. It sure has changed.

It was advertised to the stores to be aware. It was funny it was protroled by the local police on horses. And there was a secret call out all the way in when the horses was coming. 😅 I figure like any large event there was a mess left behind. And a lot of the rainbowers were not as clean as this video is showing. 😢 It was interesting and a friend and I did have a good time.

As a local resident, my understanding is that Panther Meadow had to be closed last summer to the public because "some" Rainbow members were dancing naked on sacred land that is not supposed to be walked on and were leaving trash and not being very respectful of the environment in general. Maybe it was a few bad apples but Rainbow Family does not have a great rep with longtime residents here.
