The PlayStation Vita TV Was One Of Sony's Strangest Systems Ever

  • During the Vita's short run on the market, Sony developed a console version of the handheld to go alongside of it on store shelves. This was a weird system however since it couldn't play a lot of games and even had a hard time with certain streaming apps. Sony only supported the device for about a year in the US making it more of a market failure than the Vita handheld itself. Fortunately hackers have been able open up the system even incorporating a white list for most games to now be compatible with the system.

Back then it was kinda a shame to have PSVITA. Cuz it was exact time of the RISE of the iPhones and iPod Touches, with thousands of cheap games. To play Mortal Kombat on that screen - was really mind-bending tho. Way too expensive of a toy it was. I've ended up trading my VITA for the android device :) with the same price.

Blame the expensive launch price with the expensive memory stick price for that. Had song released the ps vita with memory inside of it like what they did with the slim later on then the sales would not have been so pedestrian at during launch. Nobody wanted to drop $400 on a handheld at 2012.

Very true, but you have to admit one of the biggest things that hurt the system early on was Sony's stupid pricing of it, and the use of non standard memory cards again at stupidly high prices, when they could have gone with common SD, or Micro SD cards like most everyone else was doing at the time.

SONY did so many missteps with the VITA from the memory cards from being specific to the system, high prices, and supply shortages of them, to treating it like a redheaded stepchild, it's mind boggling why they even bothered to release it, or the PS Vita TV. All of it is why I eventually just went ahead, and got a Nintendo 2DS, and later on "NEW" 2DS XL, and if you are wondering why not a 3DS, because i was born with vision issues, and i can't see 3D proper, plus they where way more expensive when I got my refurbished 2DS for $60 direct from Nintendo's eBay store.

As someone with a vision impairment I love my PSTV as it makes it a lot easier to play some of my Vita games, especially considering the resolution of the screen makes it really hard to read text on some games.
My biggest problem is that you need to actually soft mod your system to even be able to use the system with every game says something. WHY can't some devs remember that there ARE GAMERS that have vision problem that might make it harder to play games on portable systems.
I'm serious here as someone that doesn't like modding their systems I've actually had to look into this BECAUSE of the fact that devs WERE GIVEN THE CHOICE to say they DON'T WANT their GAME TO WORK on the system.
It's a great system overall but really why does w lot of people forget about us visually impaired gamers.
Fun fact, EA sadly is actually good accessibility for visually impaired games since there's a lot of casual gamers with eyesight problems that play their sports games.

Agreed. The failure to capitalize on the full library of the PSP and Vita, and Sony’s apparent eagerness to kill this new system when it was just catching on, were downright bizarre. Maybe they just didn’t want to cannibalize PS4 sales, though there was little risk of that.
At the very least, Sony should consider a new production run. It’s been amply demonstrated that the demand is there. Maybe bump the specs a bit, and support PS2 titles. They could make absolute bank selling digital versions of the PS2’s library on a system with such a small form factor.

I needed to reach 100 hours played for the last trophy and an actual PS Vita only let's you set up the auto sleep timer up to like 30 minutes, there is no way to disable it.

I absolutely love my PlayStation TV, I love how you can use your PlayStation vita, and then carry on on the big screen like a Switch. Hack it, install the whitelist app, install sharp scale and you’ve got an incredible gaming/emulation device. They can look a little out of place in a gaming setup as they’re so small and awkward, so I’ve used sticky Velcro to fix it to the back of my TV so you wouldn’t even know that it was there.
Ps, the power cable is the same as that use by the PSP, and I think that wipeout doesn’t work because it uses the touch screen only for the menus. This isn’t a problem if using a dual shock 4 though.

  • @misamiko0503

I actually use my PSTV pretty regularly - along with my PS3 and PS4. I'm someone who enjoys making custom themes for both the Vita and 3DS, and after a while, the whole process has gotten pretty simple. And while yeah, the system has its issues, some that carry over from the original Vita, and some that are exclusive to it, with a sd2vita for more storage for my digital games, and the whitelist hack to allow me to play some of my games that I couldn't normally play on this, because I decided to get a PSTV for the TV play instead of a Vita proper...something I partially regret, in all honesty, but when I got mine, these were just dirt cheap - it's become a great way for me to experience the Vita's library. In fact, I just finished Root Letter an hour ago. From Gamestop accidentally giving me my first Japanese game with Dancing All Night, to finally playing Persona 4, I do have some good memories with this little thing, and yeah, I'm gonna keep using it.

I have a Vita TV and I definitely enjoy it still. When i purchased mine I picked it up for $39.99 brand new. At the time Sony was pushing the console for remote play. So if you have a PS4 in one room and your PS Vita TV in another room you can remote play your PS4 games on another TV in your house.

There was a point in time where I was considering a vita tv just to play p4g, but now that it’s on steam I don’t really have any reason to

Man I own one of these things, I got it for like $50 at walmart in January 2016 after I got the uncharted collection ps4 for Christmas 2015, the idea in my head was that I would have my ps4 in my room but put the pstv in the living room so that when my parents weren't watching tv I could play my ps4 on the bigscreen in the living room with the remote play app on it, I quickly found out that remote play isn't very great on this without Ethernet, I very un-fondly remember lugging this thing on vacation with me to universal studios Orlando and when I was in the hotel room I tried to rent the deadpool movie on psn only to realize after paying for the movie that you couldn't watch the movie without downloading it and I didn't have a memory card for this so the movie was too big for the system memory so I basically got scammed for a few dollars, I ended up using the rest of the psn money I had on it for duke nukem 3d and ended up very angrily playing that for a few hours before promtly never using it ever again, it now just sits on a shelf in my room collecting dust.

WipEout 2048 only ran at 30fps on the Vita. And using Whitelist hacks, it can run on the PSTV. The reason for the price hikes now that it's hard to find is because hackers have really been able to open up the system, not only for Vita games, but for PSP games as well.

It is actually disappointing that the vita did not out put to the tv. The psp 2 and 3000 did. I still play my 3000 on the tv with the composite cables

found a sealed lego movie bundle of it a few months back. got it for collection and to hack it as i like to keep my actual vita hack free. being a trophy hunter I didn't want to risk messing up my psn account with hacked firmware. Thanks for opening this one up, there isn't too much info on the psTV online so it was nice to see more details about it

If anyone is looking for a power adapter, it’s the same tip and spec as the PSP 2000 charger, and power draw is even suitable for being powered from a power bank or powered usb hub
