How you ask? What I did was that You don't need the top screen. You can still drive by playing the bottom screen mini map and shoss all the action icon items that are on the track and players. I was still able to play Mario Kart DS with my friends with a Broken top screen.
You can do this without soldering a resistor also, just by separating the led lights from the lcd top screen and leaving it connected and just either stuffing it back in the housing or putting the led’s in a straw across the top for a cool light effect.
I'm super glad that you went with the "bare minimum" approach on this one. Sometimes It can be intimidating or even demoralizing to see a super well-made shell on something so simple. Keep it up and thank you!

Something you need to be cautious of if you get a replacement shell for the DS lite is to make sure when you are putting the back casing, where the battery is held, on to the motherboard, that there aren't any places that are hitting up against components on the board. When I was installing a new shell on to my main DS lite, there was one area that was initially not sitting properly when I was trying to assemble the DS, though it went most of the way into place after several tries. I thought everything was fine with the DS until I tried to charge it, and discovered that the casing had broken a component that was absolutely necessary for allowing the DS to charge when it finally was flat enough to close it. I ended up taking the back casing off and sanded down the area that partially broke, and was still hitting against, the component that allows the DS to charge and was able to get it to lay flat without breaking more of the component, but I still need to solder a new part on to replace the broken one so I don't have to continue to use a second, half-broken DS lite to charge other batteries that I can switch out when my main DS lite is almost dead. TL:DR; Check to make sure that the back of a replacement shell doesn't put pressure on any component on the motherboard before trying to close the bottom part of the DS.
Plug a small speaker into the earphone jack and maybe use a custom 3D printed covering to go round the GBA slot and make the game carts more flush with the case's new extension and you could set up a neat stereo speaker setup down below the screen perhaps. Saves on the soldering too.
This brings back memories of this kid in my elementary school class that had a black DS lite with its top screen hanging on by only the cords. Somehow that thing worked perfectly and he would bring it every day and invite people to play Mario 64 DS with him.
My DS Lite had the exact same problem as the one you worked on in this video (except the hinge completely broke, and the wire was the only thing holding the two screens together lol), and I always wondered if it could just be converted into a sole Game Boy machine with the bottom screen. Unfortunately, as a twelve year old with limited access to tools and not equipped with much technical knowledge, I never looked into it and just threw it away. This is really neat!

Carlos Sanchez SpawnWave was just showing the bare minimum. It is helpful for those who don’t care about how it looks, for those who are tight budget or for those who have a lot of money but don’t want to put a lot of time/money into it. I also want to ditto Gatewav’s comment.
I really think Nintendo should utilize some of the features that are present in the Manji command shell. It would fix a lot of problems I have with the switch like grip, kick stand, etc.
pro tip for those doing a top screen replacement: about the wifi cable, tie some fishing line to it and loop it around the slot, tape it to the slot and use it to pull the cable back through on reassembly
My childhood DS Lite has been dead for years, I did a shell swap by that top screen ribbon cable is so delicate, it just died eventually after opening and closing the lid a few times. Got that Boxypixel aluminium front plate and a bunch of other stuff (USB-C charging port, resistor, Switch speakers, new buttons and an LED DS cart to fill that slot) so really looking forward to reviving this guy!
Kinda wish I still had my first DS Lite now... I remember dropping it or something which broke the hinge and prevented it from turning on. I've since bought a working one from a local game store (ironically enough, it's the same exact model in this video), but it'd have been nice to be able to get some use out of that old one, even if it is pretty redundant considering I have a working one.
I'm planning on doing it with a broken DS lite. However for the sound I might go ahead and mix the left and right channel to output properly on one speaker so I have the proper stereo output over a mono speaker.
I would probably recommend using a DS lite with a nonfunctional DS cartridge port, that way you aren't really losing the DS functionality by doing this mod.
ive been thinking about this for a while now, and was very excited to see someone managed to do the exact crazy idea thats been dwelling in the back of my head for the past couplw weeks
Fun fact, it “can” play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games. It’ll also can play Nintendo System Entertainment, and that’s all possible to the EZ Flash Omega and EverDrive. EZ Flash Omega is a solid flash cart for a reasonable price with a RTC on it. Mainly used in games like Pokémon and other games.
Haji Saiku both the R4 and EZ Flash Card can play the games. R4 has a little more potions with emulators. Depending on your preferences on what you wanna play. But if you prefer to play SNES, I’d say go with an R4 Gold. You’ll get more out of it then a GBA flash cart.
My brothers broke the top off the DS lite. And it still powered on after. I didn’t have to do anything and it works just like the end product of the video. I thought it was awesome ! I’m glad others are doing the same
If I would do this, I could do challenges like "Is it possible to beat (x ds game) with only the touch screen?" (And I would keep wifi/microphone just in case, this would we good for Warioware DIY just to show off the microgames with just the microgames!)
@@nezbitnezbit5397 I think it actually would. I'm like 90% certain, it's been a while, but I saw a video on this back when I first learned about the Macro project, and it showed how technically, if you did everything right when tweaking the circuitry, you could still access everything the DS was meant to let you do; you'd just be blind to the top screen.
i’m gonna make a second account just to like this again! i did this mod with an og DS, which i believe the community calls a GBA Macro XL, with the biggest benefit being the full concealment of the GBA cart! i got a blue DS with a bad hinge for ~$16 and a sheet of 100 3ohm resistors for ~$10. highly recommend the mod, even for the beginner-intermediately skilled!
If I was willing to go all the way and do all the circuit work, I'd try it on an original DS. I know the battery doesn't last as long, but if I did the right settings, I ought to be able to turn the screen backlight completely off which would last a much longer time.
Bro other than your desired backlight setting, the process is exactly the same as the one shown in Spawn’s video. just a little soldering for the resistor and speaker. not gonna lie i goofed up a bit as i’m not a master solder-er, but in the end it boots up and works great. still need to get my speaker wired up tho, and do something about my ugly hinge holes 😂
"Let me know what you guys think about the Gameboy Macro and if you're thinking about making one" - 25 minutes ago I didn't even know this was a thing, now I'm thinking about finding a broken DS Lite just to make one.
@@diegomedina9637 No it isn't. Taking off the top screen stops the unit from functioning. That's like pretty common knowledge about Nintendo DS's by now, and not many people know yet about how this Macro thing can be done because most have moved on to newer consoles.
The DS light is the only system I ever broke that wasn't my fault I literally tossed it onto a bed and if you've ever seen how soft beds are then you will be confused at how the hinge cracked
Rip I can't even remember how the hinge on one of mine cracked I'm buying a third one from my friend today that has a cracked hinge but it works fine apart from a floppy screen so imma replace the housing
I did this mod several years ago. I ended up using a larger resistor though. But it worked like a charm, well after putting in the wifi adapter again xD
I personally went through 2 DS lites in 10 years, I treated mine with respect. The only reason my other one broke was the hinge broke and the screen fell off, none the less I continued to play it until the wires snapped.
Wait, if the ds lite has a wifi antenna, can it access the internet? Because mine can't... Maybe i need an extra cartridge but i've always been told that it generally can't connect to the interne at all... Interesting...
Several games offered online play. Pokemon and Mario Kart for example. If you mean something like an internet browser, no it doesn’t have access to that.
“It tests things before it powers on, so that’s why you have _a minute or two of delay_ before it turns on.” Christ, is it a DS Lite or a Commodore 64??
I’m pretty sure that there’s actually a natural ground on the board that can be used instead of getting a resistor. It does nothing but complete the circuit, so the self check says everything is fine.
Hey SpawnWave! My PS4 pro (release day edition) Died on Friday 😢 When I unplug the power cable and plug it back in, it beeps, blue light flashes once and that's it! Any suggestions? And I'm cool with it being in a tech Wave 😁
It could be an overheating issue. Try tearing it down, cleaning it completely and getting some thermal grizzly non-conductive thermal paste or some arctis MX-4 thermal paste.
I actually busted the hinge on the left side of my ds lite long ago, and the top screen was pretty much held in by the ribbon cable. Needless to say, the top screen died shortly after that. It would still power on, but nothing would display on the top screen. One day I was playing a GBA game on it, and the top screen finally came off. So, it was pretty much this until it was powered off.
I used work at a small shop that did game system mods and repairs back in the j-tag days and and Wii mod chips, honestly my most favorite job I've ever had and I still miss it
I’m so glad I found this omg!! When I was little my DS Lite fell on the floor and the top screen went dead, so I could only use the bottom for GBA games from then on. This is a cool project that I am SO trying out!!
I also did this a few years ago. One of my friends was angry at a game and snapped my DS in half. (at ths time) my dad helped me clean up the edges. (at the time i was like 5 - 7yo) now 20yo.
The top screen of my DS lite unfortunately broke off when i was a kid, and I basically just used it as a GBA from that point on. This video was very nostalgic for me because my DS ended up looking exactly like the one in the thumbnail.
I might do this cuz I bought a used DS and the hinge broke the same day, but the top screen kept working, so we kept trying to glue the hinge back but now it’s useless… we would need to change the shell to use it ever again and that would cost TOO much! The bottom screen is wonky anyways…

Spawn is my Go to Guy for this kind of Content! ❤️
Same!
The retro future honestly did it better
@@CarlosSanchez-en6mr agreed
Carlos Sanchez SpawnWave was just showing the bare minimum. It is helpful for those who don’t care about how it looks, for those who are tight budget or for those who have a lot of money but don’t want to put a lot of time/money into it.
I also want to ditto Gatewav’s comment.
I really think Nintendo should utilize some of the features that are present in the Manji command shell. It would fix a lot of problems I have with the switch like grip, kick stand, etc.
We hope not! That will put us out of business 😁

pro tip for those doing a top screen replacement: about the wifi cable, tie some fishing line to it and loop it around the slot, tape it to the slot and use it to pull the cable back through on reassembly
So. This video keeps peeping in and out of your recommended, and you put off watching it for a while but eventually came back.

This hurts because I had one of these and would love to have done this.
This is such an eyesore. Why not just huh a beautiful game boy micro.
I've been wanting to do a simple project like this. I've got a spare ds lite that's kinda beat up, so I think I'll give this a try!
Don't break it if the topscreen works those top screens aren't cheap someone will buy it im sure
@@fungamesandstuffwhy2516 that was two years ago. I made the thing and it worked, but I have no idea what happened to that top screen
@@crimtsun nice. I'm gonna make one soon too. I already have a Gameboy micro in great condition but I enjoy doing projects also
Instructions unclear: my ds lite turn into a dreamcast, does anyone know why?
Pass me the download play sonic adevnture 2 my man
Try putting it in rice
glad someone finally did this. i snapped my old lite in half back in the day when i got a new one and it still works!
ive been thinking about this for a while now, and was very excited to see someone managed to do the exact crazy idea thats been dwelling in the back of my head for the past couplw weeks
Just saw retro future do this a week or two ago.
This is a cool semi-fix
coincidence? I dont think so
nobody:
me:i want that
also me: breaks ds
Fun fact, it “can” play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games. It’ll also can play Nintendo System Entertainment, and that’s all possible to the EZ Flash Omega and EverDrive. EZ Flash Omega is a solid flash cart for a reasonable price with a RTC on it. Mainly used in games like Pokémon and other games.
So basically with a R4Gold card you can play GBC/GB games along with SNES?
Haji Saiku both the R4 and EZ Flash Card can play the games. R4 has a little more potions with emulators. Depending on your preferences on what you wanna play. But if you prefer to play SNES, I’d say go with an R4 Gold. You’ll get more out of it then a GBA flash cart.
This is an awesome idea! I immediately shared this with my Dad, who has repaired a bunch of game consoles over the years
My brothers broke the top off the DS lite. And it still powered on after. I didn’t have to do anything and it works just like the end product of the video. I thought it was awesome ! I’m glad others are doing the same
If anyone is wondering what spawnwave looks like, there is a face reveal at 13:03
i have the memory of a goldfish so thank you!😄
Lol
*Improvise, Adapt, Overcome*
If I would do this, I could do challenges like "Is it possible to beat (x ds game) with only the touch screen?" (And I would keep wifi/microphone just in case, this would we good for Warioware DIY just to show off the microgames with just the microgames!)
It wouldn't work because the DS would crash trying to access a top screen that doesn't exist
Chrono Trigger would be an absolute nightmare XD if only you could set all the clutter to the lower screen but it won't let you.
Ngl this is one of the cooler rabbit holes I've fallen into.
I...might need that Manji shell. First time a sponsor is 1) interesting 2) relevant 3) tempting.
i’m gonna make a second account just to like this again! i did this mod with an og DS, which i believe the community calls a GBA Macro XL, with the biggest benefit being the full concealment of the GBA cart! i got a blue DS with a bad hinge for ~$16 and a sheet of 100 3ohm resistors for ~$10. highly recommend the mod, even for the beginner-intermediately skilled!
I’m definitely gonna try to get some parts so I can do this myself
I did mine the short easy way XD but you can't change the brightness this way though
I mean... Its literally common sense.
@@diegomedina9637 No it isn't. Taking off the top screen stops the unit from functioning. That's like pretty common knowledge about Nintendo DS's by now, and not many people know yet about how this Macro thing can be done because most have moved on to newer consoles.
My DS Lite never broke. I’ve had it for over a decade.
Same. I did have an original DS that my younger brother snapped in half though because he was getting destroyed in a Shrek fighting game 💀
I watched this video this afternoon. 4 hours later, I have my own Gameboy Micro. Thank you so much for showing what I could do with my broken DS!
I love how only the blue ones have the hinge problem. I've never seen any other color get broken like that.
My blue one doesn't have a hinge problem, but my brother's red one does.
Both still work, but his hinge is looser than mine
The DS light is the only system I ever broke that wasn't my fault I literally tossed it onto a bed and if you've ever seen how soft beds are then you will be confused at how the hinge cracked
Rip
I can't even remember how the hinge on one of mine cracked
I'm buying a third one from my friend today that has a cracked hinge but it works fine apart from a floppy screen so imma replace the housing
I had someone bump my arm while I was playing it, (I didn't drop the DS) the jolt alone was enough to snap half of my hinge :(
I'm gonna grab my DS Lite and just rip off the top screen for no reason.
I hope it was a broken one
Mayor Yoshiboy me too
Yeh you were too late.
Forgot about this comment. I never actually did it lol.
@@glaciiz youtube comment section magic. hahaha
That command case looks amazing, I'm definitely buying one
i didnt quite understand everything but honestly the way this works is impressive and interesting.
I did this mod several years ago. I ended up using a larger resistor though. But it worked like a charm, well after putting in the wifi adapter again xD
At 17:53 I'm like "is that at Doom's gate? It sounds different"
holy shit
I believe that's from Megaman x
@@juanramos2992 Yeah I think he said it was zero's theme but to me the beginning sounded sorta like at Doom's gate.
Ever since I dropped my DS lite down the stairs when i was like 8 I wanted to do this lol
This video is what I needed on a boring Sunday...thanks dude
I personally went through 2 DS lites in 10 years, I treated mine with respect. The only reason my other one broke was the hinge broke and the screen fell off, none the less I continued to play it until the wires snapped.
2:48 4:02 Man that DS has been through a war or something! Look at all those scratches!
Wait, if the ds lite has a wifi antenna, can it access the internet? Because mine can't... Maybe i need an extra cartridge but i've always been told that it generally can't connect to the interne at all...
Interesting...
Maybe it was for software updates during development? Idk
Several games offered online play. Pokemon and Mario Kart for example.
If you mean something like an internet browser, no it doesn’t have access to that.
Hey! does the manji case come in other colors?
Yes, we do have multiple colors, you can check them out on our website.
Does it?
No. If you click the link, it comes in just what Spawn showed us.
@@beefstrokinoff Hi, we do have several colors, you can check them out on our website.
@@heathergrant5752 Looks like they have a few colors. Frost looks pretty cool because I have the red/blue joy-cons.
“It tests things before it powers on, so that’s why you have _a minute or two of delay_ before it turns on.”
Christ, is it a DS Lite or a Commodore 64??
C64 turned on instantly. Loading games took a long ass time.
Ds lites normally take like 10 seconds to boot up tho... I have 3 of them and all of them are fine
Quite possibly the first sponsored product that actually looks good
I’m pretty sure that there’s actually a natural ground on the board that can be used instead of getting a resistor.

Long gameboy is long
I actually busted the hinge on the left side of my ds lite long ago, and the top screen was pretty much held in by the ribbon cable. Needless to say, the top screen died shortly after that. It would still power on, but nothing would display on the top screen. One day I was playing a GBA game on it, and the top screen finally came off. So, it was pretty much this until it was powered off.
Dude I'm so glad you made a video on this! I made one last summer and finding proper information on how to wasn't the easiest thing ever
I used work at a small shop that did game system mods and repairs back in the j-tag days and and Wii mod chips, honestly my most favorite job I've ever had and I still miss it
Pratically, a Gameboy Macro! Haha
This video was very nostalgic for me because my DS ended up looking exactly like the one in the thumbnail.
figured this out 12 years ago, thank you spreading the word.
I might do this cuz I bought a used DS and the hinge broke the same day, but the top screen kept working, so we kept trying to glue the hinge back but now it’s useless… we would need to change the shell to use it ever again and that would cost TOO much! The bottom screen is wonky anyways…
I've had 2 of these sitting in a drawer for over half a decade. Time for them to see the light again. And I even have a snes and a wii to pull resistors from
"Let's see how this speaker sounds"
*dead silence*
"I think that's pretty good"
I just found 2 of my ds lite and THEY STILL WORK it brought back so many memories
