My guess is A) Sony… B) Stam. I slightly prefer A but only because I have to choose one for the sake of the blind test. Both sound great and with compression and slight EQ / De-essing you should have no problem achieving the exact same sound with either mic. Extremely slight leveling and sibilance differences are the only things I’m hearing. Excited to receive this and this is clearly the best 800 replica on the market. Just make sure mine sounds just like this one 😀 Well done Josh and team.

@@manykzdj792 Stam is going to take forever to get if you order it just so you know. The GA-8000 has also been discontinued for the time being. If you want a C800G sounding mic, the AA CM800T is an excellent choice and it won't break the bank. If you want a mic that LOOKS like the C800G, then your choices are limited to the Stam, a used GA-8000, or an actual Sony.

I have never tried a Sony but I got my Stam SA-800G two days ago and MAN I love it! Have recorded 2 different artist since then and both of them sounded sooo great with very little done either pre or post. They also felt so comfortable hearing their voice thru the SA-800G in the headphones while recording that it made them sing better then ever! I'm keeping it! =)

    My guess is:
    Mic A=Sony C-800G
    Mic B=Stam SA-800G
I feel a bit faster transients on Mic B. This must be caused by the age of transformer. Of course, both mic absolutely sounds fantastic!

I can tell you there are some very good ears amongst this group - it’s hard not to say which is which - C’mon Josh fess up- I ordered one -the mic arrived last night and its beautiful- not sure how long Josh is going to do this but - it’s a pretty unique opportunity to have a guy like this - committed to sonics the same way B Averill was when he started - when these things pop up - grab em - there’s a reason why there aren’t a ton of them floating around to buy - they are expensive and time consuming- some parts are really difficult to track down - and this stuff is all handmade-

I highly suspect that A is the Stam, but I actually prefer it a bit. If you listen to a lot of shoot outs of the C800G, you'll see that it's actually surprisingly sibilant. B sounds more sibilant to my ear. I feel pretty confident that A is the Stam, but again, I actually prefer it. And if I'm wrong the Stam is a tremendous value for money either way.

They are both good, unfortunately they have different frequency balances, so comparing them is corrupted by our individual preference for the voice in the mix. However the thing that I hear is that MIC B has these emotional/sexy moments, which the Sony is famous for. I hear less of that in MIC A. So my educated guess is that the Sony is Mic B. Would be interesting to A-B those takes after eqing them to sound more alike. After all, we all EQ to a certain result we want to hear, so these two takes would get different EQ treatment to come closer together.

Josh, you did a great job on this clone but I can't help but notice some big differences. B (The Sony) is waaay "smoother" - it has this natural compression-like sound and isn't harsh in any way. Where the Stam has a bit more of a "brittle" sound especially on the top end that can sound a little harsh. I think with a little more time with development and more research you could get this nearly identical, but budget constraints etc I'm sure hinder that. Price wise this is very fair and in the "ballpark" of that Sony sound but there is still a very clear difference between the two.

B is the Sony and A is the Stam, they do not sound identical...

Agreed. It sounds pretty good though. But the original a tiny bit better 🤏

A test with less reverb would be better... And with male voice..

My guess: B is the Sony. Has stronger Midrange and lowend and seems clearer over all.

Doesn’t have the sparkle of the Sony C800G, sounds about as close as a WA-8000, GA-8000, JJ Akita, or Slate VMS. Sphere L22 is much closer for sure. And there are some un-answered questions regarding the details listed on the website and it’s clear that is NOT “sonically identical”

Which mic doesn't have the sparkle of the Sony? Nah, it sounds quite different from any of the mics you mentioned, no point making the same that it's already out there.

    IT'S JUST MY OPINION!
The Sony is much more balanced, the mid-bass of the voice is solid, the sibilants are controlled and pleasing.
I can’t say the same about the stam audio version. I’m not saying it’s a bad microphone, I’m just saying it’s not a C800G.
As with all clones on the market, the similarity is focused on aesthetics. Good music to everyone.

Mic B sounds like a commercial record and Mic A sounds like a cheap budget microphone. They don't even sound similar. B is obviously the Sony. Sorry guys but you didn't nail it on this one. Back to the drawing board.

B...... slightly more presence and clarity.
