Mic A = SA800G Mic B = Sony C800G Sony is just a solid microphone. Mic B all day. Listening through my Yamaha HS8 monitor speakers & Focusrite Clarett 2Pre usb interface.

Stam makes great mics, but in this case I'm not convinced. The U47 sounds like a U47, the Stam sounds like a U47 clone, although it could actually be a clone of many other mics because it has a fairly impersonal and neutral sound. I feel that in this case the creaminess, the sandy highs and the valve compression are not achieved in the same way as the Neumann does, qualities that make the U47 special, which makes it, in my opinion, not a good replacement for a U47.

I'm not sure which is which. I wish "a" was the Stam, that would be great news, but I don't think so. "A" sounds smoother, warmer, more controlled, with an almost perfect sound for mixing. "B" sounds more like current microphones sound, harsh, with the sibilance a bit exaggerated and without the body and creaminess of "a". If it's about adding a lot of treble to the vocal take, to give it a modern sound in the style of a 251, with "a", I have the feeling that it would accept it well and give creamy highs while "B" would start to sound harsh and difficult to mix, like most current microphones. Over the years, capsules acquire properties that are impossible to replicate.

Josh, you did a great job on this clone but I can't help but notice some big differences. B (The Sony) is waaay "smoother" - it has this natural compression-like sound and isn't harsh in any way. Where the Stam has a bit more of a "brittle" sound especially on the top end that can sound a little harsh. I think with a little more time with development and more research you could get this nearly identical, but budget constraints etc I'm sure hinder that. Price wise this is very fair and in the "ballpark" of that Sony sound but there is still a very clear difference between the two.

I've actually used this mic, along with the Stam LA-3. Both are excellent.

I'm convinced. Nobody would notice in the context of a mix.

I definitely have thoughts on the mics, but I MOSTLY just think I want to hear you sing the entire Sting solo catalog now! 🤷‍♂😄 Great work!

I prefer mic A for this song with the softer almost u47 style top end but I have a feeling B is the Sony with that harder top.

@Stam Audio ...The quality of Singing here is excellent However you need to Show the 'Exact' Same part of the Song back to back on both mic's! this is crucial. with hopefully no more 30-45Sec on each mic before Switching to the other mic do this switching 3 or four times for each singer ..then the other recommendation is to do this but not on just one voice add a Baritone, Tenor, Alto & soprano, Male singers. then follow that with as many female singers in the same vein. this is what will actually give a Listening singers in the market for a New or even 1st Mic the strong confidence to say - this sounds like a mic that will or will not be the best option for my voice - & that is the main thing that will have them Pull the trigger on one of these pricier clones vs just sticking to lower budget clones which are even more accessible at low prices in the 2nd hand market too . Do what I've motioned for all of your mic range eventually & it will be the most effective thing you do this year to increase your sales figures Stam.

Hey Joshua, any chance we can get raw vocal files without any processing to compare? I'd love to get the 3 tracks, backing track and 2 vocal takes from each mic. 2 reasons: 1. I hear artifacts from your plugins in my speakers and I believe you are not giving us a fair chance to assess for our selves. I can hear more tuning in mic B. 2. Want to compare how they take plugins and how they sound processed based on my own plugins. Love your work. Ty in advance.

A is the original vintage U67, but it sounds like an old mic......B is STAM replicating that sound, C is the reissue Neumann and is a new mic, and most probably when the original was made (mic a) it would sound more like mic C with the extra punch. What's really important all mics here in this test are great, I hope one day STAM renames there range of microphones as they are awesome and should not be seen as clone mics but outstanding pieces of hand made quality that has been made with passion the same as Neumann. I get it for marketing reasons they use the Neumann numbers....but some day they should walk out from the shadows of that company :) For the record for this track and this style of singer A and B would be the right pick, however C would be better than A and B on different tracks and artist........but with modern DAW and plug-ins we all know we could make up for it in post.
