I love Garth. This guy retired, came back, put on a free concert in Central Park. Over 850 thousand people. They had to block the streets for overflow. He won entertainer of the year the same year. Ive had a lifetime of Garth and im still a fan in my 40's. He's an amazing artist.
That concert was nuts. I saw a documentary and that day he was worried that no one would show up. Well, at one point, shortly before the show they told him "an hour and 1/2 ago the best guess is there were 850,000 people waiting for you. The final figures, as near as they could figure 1,250,000 people showed up, in NYC's Central park just to see him. WOW!
I am a big fan of both Billy and Garth but nothing Garth does is "by far" the best when it comes to comparing their versions of this song. If anyone prefers Garth's version then that is fine but to say his is by far the best in comparison to Billy's is just silly. As for Billy supposedly telling Garth he did the song the way it was meant to be done, Billy wrote it with Jimi Hendrix in mind. Garth was on tour for quite a while and when he came back home he had several CDs via a recommendations type thing that had been mailed out to him where if he did not reject the recommendation, so they would send them out. One of the CDs was Storm Front by Billy Joel and having no choice but to then buy it via not rejecting the recommendation, Garth listened to it and like Shameless and so recorded it but it was never likely to be in the same style as Hendrix or like Billy's version.
I you want a real treat, get your hands on a DVD of one of his concerts...he puts on a really fantastic show! The entire audience gets into it and it's a joy to watch! Terrific reaction, thank you!

The Dance. I lost my dad 23 years ago this month when I was 16. The very last time I danced with him was to The Dance. He took his life just a few weeks later. Looking back there was a reason he chose that song. It's a beautiful song!

Actually, there was an awards show where he performed this and at the end, it ended like this one but Garth fell to his knees and the lights went out. That was truly amazing!! I prefer his live version over studio, at least for Shameless.

Saw the ropin the wind tour. Spring ‘92. OKC. That album was the one that made me a fan. His live stuff is SO damn GOOD.
