  • My experience during a 10-day silent meditation course called Vipassana. One of the most difficult, yet rewarding experiences of my life. I also wrote a full blog article that can be viewed in the link below. I included the first half or so below.

    In January 2017, I participated in a 10 day silent meditation course called Vipassana. It was one of the most intense experiences of my life, and it lead to many realizations. Experientially it was very challenging, but ultimately very rewarding. Perhaps there is no other activity that one could engage in for 10 days that would lead to so much spiritual cleansing and personal development. Reading this article will not transmit the benefits, only actual meditation can do that. This is written for the purpose of sharing my experience if one desires to try it oneself. Full details and a description of the practice are available at www.dhamma.org.
    The Vipassana meditation course I participated in was a 10 day course that occurred in the same exact style as those that occur in hundreds of centers across the world. Vipassana is non-sectarian and is absolutely free. One can choose to donate time or money at the end of the course, but only if one found the experience helpful and desires to give it to future participants. Six strict precepts are practiced during the ten days. No killing, no stealing, abstinence of all sexual activity, no telling of lies, no intoxicants, and no speaking - aka noble silence. As well there is no reading, writing, music, eye contact, gestures, exercising, or distractions of any kind allowed. Light walking around the grounds is permitted. All that is done for 10 hours a day is meditation. This leads to extreme introspection, and an absolute immersion in the meditative practice that yields innumerable profits discussed below. The premise of the meditation is observing things as they are. This means observing the breath and bodily sensations without craving or aversion. Feeling them as they arise and pass with equanimity. As the 10 days progress, one experientially develops through the meditative practice as realizations occur.
    Much occurred internally during this experience. The most notable and intense internal activity on the retreat for me personally, was the vivid memory and correction of past negativity and pain. Metaphorically my mind was like a computer that was scanning all the damaged files on the hard drive. Each time one was found, it would pull it up into full view, and slowly and painstakingly repair it - requiring much computer power. Meaning that my mind while meditating, was constantly cycling through my ENTIRE life. My memory was enhanced much more than I ever would have thought possible. I had FULL visual, auditory, and sensory recollection of all past experiences. Although I have had a very positive life, I barely looked back on positive experiences. Mostly pulling up every painful and negative experience in life. Be that relationships, bad things others did to me, bad things I did to others, negative reactions I have gotten, or unfortunate life circumstances that caused pain. Many of these memories I have spent considerable time working on in the past with extensive meditation. I thought I had many of them fully worked out but it was apparent that more attention was needed. Each stack of pain that was pulled up was all that I could see and focus on. I was forced to re-live the pain. In order to pass through, I had to not react to the uncomfortable sensations, but to feel them in a relaxed, indifferent, and curious manner. After a while, depending on the size of the stack, the pain was felt, the debt was paid, and I was free to move on to the next. This cycle continued throughout the whole retreat.
    The extreme difficulty of the meditation deserves at

    Great video. Good advice. I've done the course three times now and plan to go once a year as long as I have the time. I've noticed that every time I take the course, it's a different kind of experience. After each course, I notice more positive changes in myself. Multiply that year after year, course after course, and I'm already so much of a better person than before I started. I met a woman who has gone more than 20 times and she's one of the coolest people I've ever met. Such nice energy about her.

    Your comment about day 10 is so accurate! I loved that day.
    And it's funny that you mostly had negative past experiences arise, I felt I was mostly having thoughts of positive past experiences, but Vipassana taught that that thought pattern of craving past positive experiences was actually causing me suffering.
    Nice video, and anyone thinking of doing a Vipassana definitely do it, don't go in with too much expectations, as your experience won't be like anyone elses.
    I can't wait to do another one. Have to wait for covid to end 🙄

I read Harari's book, and in his interviews he talked about Vipassana meditation and it inspires me very much to try it. I wanted to go for a meditation retreat later late this year, but I'm more intrigued with Vipassana meditation. • @calumx
      @calumx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      So it is only like 4 formal sits where everyone sits in the hall. The sits are one hour long. It is pretty gnarly honestly to sit for that long but you deal with it. The rest of the time you are free to walk around, sit in the hall, or sit in your room. It is savage but it is only 10 days and it is worth it. They have cushions and various things to make it more comfortable

    1:23 I've watched a lot of similar review videos and I was quite shocked to see that actually very few people are so honest to admit the fact that Vipassana is about facing your guilt and grievances and finding closure for them but not about getting suddenly enlightened or to get some psychedelic experience. Your video is short but very meaningful. Thank you! 😌💗 Please tell me if you have ever tried regression sessions? They look very similar in that sense. Also I've read a book called "The Disappearance of the Universe" that talks about the critical importance of dealing with our guilt.

I know the benefits are amazing and life changing but I seriously cannot imagine myself cutting off from my life for 10 days. I might go crazy inside lols.. With that being said, I practices yoga on a daily basis...in between poses and practicing stillness and mindfulness must always be in constant with one's breath. And always accept things as it is. Live in the moment and enjoy it fully.

    Hey, so I done a Ayahuasca ceremony last night, and two other who participated actually spoke of this. I didn't know the details or much about vipassana only heard the term. Fear came up as I heard the process of it. Yet I want to do one in December. I have a question. Did you practice meditation much prior? Because I haven't and am nervous. Should I lead myself by doing meditation every day leading to this day even 10mins?

    The three important tenets of Buddhism is to know that mind and matter are all 1.Impermanent 2.suffering and 3.Non-self
    To meditate means to meditate on mind and matter and be aware of it.
    The difficulty with the meditator here is they try to meditate on concepts of impermanence, suffering and non-self. Concepts don't exist.
    Take Seeing for example. In the beginning, there is no seeing, but if the eye is good, the object comes up, there is light and your attention is drawn to it. If these four conditions concur, then there is seeing. Once it has arisen, then it passes away. So we say, seeing is impermanent.
    Since the meditator is watching every arising, all things mental and material appear to him as separate,broken pieces. He is no longer illusioned.

    Cool video! Do you think you have to already be "good at" meditating before you go or could someone brand new do it as long as they are enthusiastic about learning and trying to get a lot out of it?

    • @calumx
      @calumx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah I actually think that this is the perfect experience for a beginner. Meditating for 10 days gives you a very solid foundation for meditation once you leave. You can go from beginner to experienced in 10 days. Most beginners will dabble in guided meditation here and there and it takes them years to become comfortable with it. This can plunge you right in to it and you can have that practice for the rest of your life

    I left on the second day man. I started having suicide ideation for the first time in my life and it terrified me, I was scared of snapping and making a terrible choice. I felt inferior that I was struggling so much and it just became a cycle. Its been a year and I'm still working on my emotional, psychological and physical issues and I hope to return one day to complete the course because I acknowledge its importance. I need to learn how to live more mindfully without my distractions first.

      just continue meditating..it wont cause u any harm..same way as how when they say u to observe your breathe..if thought's come let them come and then let them go..dont try to fight them or take them seriously..so many of our thoughts are only passing thoughts..they come and they go..like if we think about a banana that dont mean we become a banana or if we think of an apple then that dont mean we become an apple..same is for out thought's..just because we have some specific imaginary thought then that dont mean we become that thought..u shud try again..i recently completed my first course and it was so good aafter10 days..it really changed my life and i plan to do vipassana for the rest of my life

    Thinking about doing the course in April but I just wonder since I've only been into meditation for the past month...I really want to try it but is it suitable for people who just got into meditation? Does experience have a vital role in the course? Thanks for the answers in advance!

    I feel like if I did the retreat I’d have back to back panic attacks. Could you imagine?
    Every couple hours I start running back-and-forth, panting heavily, laying down, standing up in a panic. Then back to meditation. I have frequent panic attacks when I think about something too big for my mind to handle

    • @alexanderdriscoll1730
      @alexanderdriscoll1730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I struggled with severe panic attacks catalysed by my use of drugs and the arousal of my drug induced psychosis at the age of 19.
      My first course was super difficult because all of that psychosis and panic attacks arose to the surface to be dealt with after day 4 of the course! when vipassana was given.
      But, I stuck it through and what I found was, FINALLY! something that can actually help me face this. And I faced it, ofcourse with a lot of crying and difficulty at first, but I made it through and to my astoundment I got to watch a full blown panic attack leave! And it was like I had stepped into the eye of the storm.. Like I was in the eye of a tornado or something.. So calm and I could see the storm within me.. Like seeing the storm outside the eye of the storm.. But so calm, so calm. And I realised by my own experience how I had been a victim to the physical and mental experience of a panic attack and that I finally had the ability to not be overcome by it and with the strength of the technique, I was able to be unshaken by it :)
      Then I got so 'dominant' that I wanted to destroy the sensations within me that resembled my panic attack.. The feeling had shrunk down to a small little ball sensation moving around my body.. But I went to my teacher and he said 'Don't give it any importance'. And I realised when I sat back down in meditation that whether it is a huge storm inside me.. Or something I think I can remove by the power of my mind.. None of that is important.. And when I gave it no importance.. That experience was feeding off my attention and importance and narrative and reaction in believing it.
      So much insight! I hope you too one day come to find the strength in yourself someway, somehow, to not be overcome by your experience with panic attacks. My heart goes out to you, I know a similar suffering to the one you experience. x

    no you should not engage in anger. but it comes up for a reason, for you to act and take action. And set your boundaries so you can function in the world. I the anger is healthy and comes out the right way. I dont see the point in just going arround forgiving people when they step on you.

      It is much better to be in the environment of a Vipassana center. All of your affairs are taken care of and you can focus on mediation with no distractions. It is very unlikely that someone could be as disciplined and meditate as much at home

    I am very surprised to hear you say that "a sizeable amount of people leave" a course. I have sat 16 ten day courses and served 5. I have also sat 15 three day courses. I have always been amazed at how few people leave ! I have sat courses at North Fork that can host almost 100 students and NO ONE left ! It has been my observation over almost 20 years of practicing Vipassana as taught by S.N Goenka that the success rate of students finishing a course are in the low to high 90 % range.

    • @calumx
      @calumx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have only done this one course. I think we had 60 or so guys and it seemed like 8-10 of them left. Afterwards in talking to people, the experienced Vipassana people said that was pretty standard in every course they have sat. Pretty much everyone that left it was their first sit.
