It's a serious question! I slept two years on a futon on the floor and consequently didn't invite anyone over. Yes it's my choice I know, but I was too poor for a futon bed frame but I also didn't want to compromise on sleep comfort.

I slept on a memory foam mattress topper on the floor for a year, so same concept. Sex was good! You have the opportunity to use the floor too without having to step down or anything. It works out okay, or at least it does when she's not a fuckin starfish

Although probably not as much as in UK, we too have a long rainy season :)
We use futon drier to make futons as fluffy as possible. Nowadays, sadly, most households don’t have backyard and many apartments ban to put your futons outside since it doesn’t look good. Using futon drier is actually the norm in urban area life.
Thanks for your comment:) Bye now.

@@Gieszkanne You hang your futon on the railing of the balcony, or fold it and put it in the cupboard - there are special closets for this. Most Japanese do not sleep on tatami, the futon is on the floor. Also Japanese futon are made of polyester, not cotton, which makes them very resistant to mold in the first place.

I'm 66, bought my shikibuton and kakefuton in 2011 right after my *fancy name brand memory foam mattress* tried to kill me, and I started looking for something that wouldn't. I found J-Life International back then and bought the organic cotton 4" mattress, the bedding, the buckwheat hull pillows, and it worked in my place then to store everything during the day in my closet. When I moved, that didn't work anymore, so I bought a $100 bare wood single bed frame from Amazon, and later bought a $150 (or so?) tatami mat to help the mattress breathe. I will never go back to the "American" way of mattress, box springs, down pillows and all that.
That's 13 years on my one 4" organic cotton (no sprayed-on chemicals) mattress.
I did open it up at one point (2014?) and filled it in with some organic cotton quilt batting and stitched it back up, as it was developing a valley that I didn't like. Haven't messed with it since.
It's cool to see you guys talking about this!
I'm not married, and there was only one opportunity in my life a few years ago to test-drive the idea of having a guy stay overnight. That didn't work well. He sleeps on and loves his *name brand chemical-filled pit of death* that I refuse to go near ever again.

I slept on a 8” thick cotton filled futon (very heavy) on top of tatami mats for 15 years. It was really clean barely used when I got it. It is still very clean no stain, dent or lump because I always have it covered with multiple sheets, blankets, and carpets. 2 years ago when I moved to my new place I bought a futon frame for my futon. It is now my only sofa and guest bed in the living room. I got a 6” twin mattress topper. I put it on top of 3 tatami mats and a heavy wood futon frame to be my bed. I sleep alternately between this twin bed and a hammock (both in my bedroom). Other than the Amazon hammock stand ($45), everything was from Craigslist for $20/$30.

I was really glad when I first got rid of my bed, (did so off and on for 15 years.) Namely I like a solid bed and sleeping without a bed frame is awesome. Currently I have had a bed for the last 6 years but, it is still very simple. OH, only worry I had in Texas one time was at a farm house I rented and I realized those were SCORPIONS I heard!! Eeek. I did get a bed. Yeah, sure, they can still climb right up. OH another time I rented another farmhouse near a newly harvested field in Kentucky and experienced, what I call, "the great mouse infestation." Oh, I moved and threw almost every furniture item I had away from there, (mouse urine.) Anyways, but for those two times I loved the floor as the base for my bedding.

I don't care how a guy sleeps but what I do care about is his character. I'm good at making any circumstances of sleeping work. Some people like to have their bed on the floor, Some Like It High and for others, some can't afford it. Especially if they have their own place or even living with roommates I can 100% respect that. I always wanted to sleep on a futon and I probably had in the past but I probably don't remember. It is definitely an option and especially since I have my mattress topper. But seriously, I'm tired of beds sagging on me and losing its support!

I think one of the overlooked benefits of a futon on the floor is the ease of moving if you have to change apartments. A bed frame is typically one of the biggest pieces of furniture you’d have and can make the difference between being able to move house with a car and having to hire a van.
Building a bed frame is a straightforward carpentry project and you can design it so it’s demountable into two or three sections for ease of moving. Combined with a foldable or rollable futon, it’s probably the best compromise of comfort and ability to move easily.
The ability to store things under the bed is important IMO, so long as you don’t over-do it. Sometimes it’s not about how much space you have but how uncluttered it feels.

generally women should not sleep on firm beds due to higher bone and joint porosity, and body curves esp form bone structure like the hips which need more cushioning so the tailbone muscles and tissues are not affected. However there are futons that are super soft and if you must you can always layer 2 on top of each other. This is what I have seen at Ryokan of we explain the person has back ache.

So moving everything upstairs was amazingly better than trying to haul a mattress. Plus being in the French Quarter; in a 180 year old apartment, I only have like 200 sqft, so putting it away and sitting in the tatami mat definitely works out for the best. Plus it’s just a nice clean aesthetic. Plus I also use straight linen sheets, so it breathes as actually feels like a natural sleeping environment.

I got their organic cotton cover for it and I found a futon dryer for the winter months to dry it out. Basically a cord/hose that I can set on a 30 or 60 min timer. This helps a lot when I’m unable to take it outside to dry in the sun. I bought some straps and a tarp and a lightweight 2 piece folding queen frame so I can fold the mattress up and pull it with the tarp with handles and set it on the frame outside in the sun. it’s a process so the futon dryer helps a lot but much cleaner than traditional beds 🌱

Latex was mentioned in a list of things that aren’t natural, but there is natural latex and there is synthetic latex. Within the natural latex category you can choose organic latex. I tried sleeping on the floor on a shikibuton and really liked it and how my back felt until a big bug decided to crawl up there with me. I tried out different ways to get the firm sleeping experience but with a raised bed. I opted for a Thuma bed and a firm latex mattress. The mattress isn’t as firm as sleeping on a shikibuton on the floor, but it’s firmer than the standard mattresses I’ve had in the past. My back feels good sleeping on it.

To solve the space hog issue of the bed frame, if they made one into a CONVERTIBLE SOFA style, you’d have the best of both worlds. 🛋️ + 🛌 = 👌
Pass on this suggestion to them, and they’ll have even MORE customers for this product! You guys could be the TH-cam spokespeople for it!

Hey there. I have really bad allergies. And i have 2 dogs and 6 cats. Im so over throwing out mattresses due to dust mites and flea allergies. Are japanese futons good as far as hypoallergenic problems? Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated. Yes, my pets are all medicated monthly like clockwork. I struggle to keep my house super clean everyday. Exterminator comes and sprays. I cant keep the dang fleas and dust out of my mattress. I just put mattress out in garbage. Im tired of suffering and have been looking at japanese futons for a few weeks. Thank you ❣️🤧

Watching other youtubers, i’ve learned it’s normal to hang up your futon everyday to air out, as well as clean the mat often. I’ve heard if you leave a futon on the floor its way worse than a regular mattress in terms of collecting dirt, allergens, mites, etc. But if you care for it you dont have any of those problems. With a regular mattress you can’t just hang it up to air it out during the day, so I would think that a futon would help the issues you’re describing just because of the fact that it’s way easier to keep clean. Hope this helps.

I have allergies and pets and these are the solutions I’ve found to keep my bed/home clean and without dust mites or fleas. I can breathe easily and it’s easy to maintain once these steps become a habit. They all get their flea/mite monthly pill which works really well. I have indoor dogs so they walk outside but I make sure not to have them go into very dusty areas with lots of dried bush. If they do get dusty like at the dog park, they get a brushing outside before they come in.
Pets should be brushed weekly so they don’t leave their dust and dander and hair all over your stuff. I wash my bedding weekly (comforter cover, top sheet, flat sheet, pillow cases) and I use a flat sheet on my couch which I also wash once a week (my bedding wash day is Sunday). I use cotton allergy pillow protectors from Allerease on my pillows, and I use a waterproof mattress protector for my bed.
For the dog stairs I wrap the foam stairs in a big garbage bag *then* put on the fabric encasement. For the dog beds, I bought some yards of fleece from the fabric store and cut them in bed squares to drape over the dog beds. I was the stair cover and the fleece covers on wash day in HOT water.
I also don’t have carpet, but I do have rugs, and you guessed it those are washed on Sunday as well (I have 3 rugs from ikea that are floppy and easy to launder). I use my robot vacuum on Saturdays. Hope that helps!

Great question. You buy them separately. The frame, the tatami mats, and the futon mattress are all separate and you would just build your cart. The tatami mats are super thick and high quality

I've been sleeping on the floor for the last 26 years on and off futon mats I found this due to looking for a tatami mat roll up slat frame for airflow as I live in the desert ... western beds suck and gave me horrible back pain and joint pain and that's saying alot considering I can sleep on sharp rocks and gravel😂 id recommend a futon tatami combo to anyone suffering from bed pain

Yeah. It's not very hard to assemble at all. I had my friend help me. But it maybe took us like 10 or 15 minutes. Probably comparable to assembling any normal bed frame.
