The man in the middle who sang lead in Let the Sun Shine In and the woman on the right at the beginning are Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo. They are husband and wife and are still married today.

The 5th Dimension had a broad appeal to all audiences because their song selection and production were top notch. They had several hits in the late 1960s.

We Boomers made our mistakes, like all generations--but the MUSIC was glorious, fresh, inventive, unique--the BEST ever! THE golden age of popular music! But you had to live through the 60s to completely understand...

This song was featured in the rock musical "Hair" & the '5th Dimension" absolutely killed it. The fashion style was called "Mod".

    • @erikahlander3489
      @erikahlander3489 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

In Sweden "mods" looked quit different. (But it is colder here). More like British mods. This was released 69. Must have been in early spring. I was to enter high school coming fall. This song was played a lot in radio! Hippies looked different and was still more rare. As I remember it American artists were still minor in Sweden compared to domestic and the British rock.

These songs are from the 1967 musical “Hair” (turned into a film in 1979) and ‘Let The Sunshine In’ was the finale, when audience members were invited to join the cast on stage, and sing and dance along with them.

Hair had a bunch of popular songs including Hair by the Cowsills, Good Morning Starshine by Oliver, Easy to Be Hard by Three Dog Night. The Original Cast Album was the only stage soundtrack to hit #1 for 42 years from 1969-2011.

I was a little kid when this came out and whenever it came on the car radio, I always started dancing in the front seat of the car and singing along while my Dad was driving (we didn't have seat belts back then). This is still one of my favorites songs of all time. The 5th Dimension has some really good songs. This was a monster #1 song and one of the biggest songs of 1969 and has been recognized by Rolling Stone and Billboard as one of the greatest songs of all time. This song was on the radio well into the 70s.

These songs can transport me right into the 60s - even thought I wasn't born then - where I can feel the spirit of the 60's and image how it was to be a part of the cultural changes taking place at the dawn of the "Age of Aquarius"! No matter how many times I hear these songs, they still sound magical to me.

Oh his voice absolutely has that gospel revival feel to it. A lot of soul. And the whole thing reminds me of along the lines of praise music in a black Baptist Church for example.
I loved this song so much when I was a kid, and by this I mean the combination of two songs, it was played that way on the radio all the time. I mean all the time.
I was so young, and the older neighborhood girls who were also our babysitters on a regular basis, they would gather next door on the back patio in the evenings in the summertime. They brought out this tiny little portable record player and they had the 45 RPM vinyl single to this song with Age of Aquarius on side A, and let the sun shine in on side B.
It's such a fond and poetic memory for me. Here they were in their short shorts and tank tops, and during the first song, they would kind of make this serpentine dance where they put their hands together above their heads, pointed straight up, and undulated them back and forth together as they rose them up higher and higher while they did that sexy dance underneath. Bare feet, the moonlight in their hair, the music, just feeling good.
The hilarious thing to me is, it was my job when Age of Aquarius ended to run over to the record player and lift the needle up really quick, flip the record over and set the needle down right at the beginning of the next song. I got really good at it. I was ready to instantly lift it up as soon as the last note played of the first song, flip it over really fast and quickly drop it down right on the first groove of Let the Sun Shine In. Elapsed time maybe 3 seconds at most.

There was a great "planetary alignment" in the late 60's that was to trigger the "Age of Aquarius", a time of peace and love. This was some genuine, heavy-duty, pure hippie stuff. In later years it was coopted for other uses.

As several have stated the two songs were from the Broadway musical Hair. There was also a movie put out in the 70s. It's about a young man from Oklahoma traveling to NY to be inducted into the service, to be sent to fight in Vietnam. He meet up with anti-war hippies in Central Park. Other songs from the musical were covered by other artists. The singing family, The Cowsills, had a hit with the title song Hair.

Popular music of the Sixties was still greatly influenced by the Big Band era, which you hear in the first half. The second half of this song reflects the funk / soul sound of the 60s.

This was one of the water shed songs of my generation, heralding the beginning of the prophesied New Age (Age of Aquarius) where all the negativity of the planet will come forth and over time be cleared away and then we will learn to live in love and brotherhood with one another. I see it happening right now. Despite all the crap that seems to be happening, we have to have it come up to be cleared before the New Age can come in.

Welcome to the Baby Boomer era, that music video was normal culture back then.
    th-cam.com/video/Qt_yKPNORLM/w-d-xo.html
this link is to the Cowsills, who did "Hair". "Hair" was the title song for the play "Hair" that "Aquarius" and "Let the Sunshine In" came from. The Cowsills also did their video very much in the culture back then. Between this video you reviewed and watching the above link to the Cowsills. Will give you a look into the times of us Baby Boomers. But remember, this video and the link I put here, are to be viewed with the thought, "this was normal then".
