In 1969 I was living in New York CIty, I was 24 years old. One Sunday I decided to go to Central Park, it just so happened that the 5th Dimension was giving a free concert that afternoon, they were great, and the air was so thick with pot, you could just inhale and get high. Great times.
On a cab ride, band member Billy Davis Jr, the guy in the yellow pants,. lost his wallet. A helpful stranger found it, tracked him down at the hotel the band was staying in, and returned the wallet ...As a gesture of gratitude, Davis invited the person to see them play a show and the stranger accepted. After the concert, the stranger thanked them for such a wonderful time and offered tickets to come see his show, for which he was a producer, Hair. These are the opening and closing songs from the musical...
Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In was originally from the Broadway musical HAIR ,..It's a combination of the 2 songs mashed tolgether .. the 5th had 6 grammys (4 for Up Up & Away & 2 for Aquarius) .. they had 3 #1 Hits (this was #1 for 6 straight weeks), 20 top 40 hits .. Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr (the 2 lead vocalists married in 1969 & left the group in 1975 .. They had a #1 hit with "You Don't Have To Be a Star" & won a grammy in 1976 .. They had their own TV show in the SUmmer of 1977 (only Married Black Couple to do so) .. They R still married 53 yrs later.. cheers
@@oldschoolhip-hopheadriorea9178 "last night I didn't get any sleep at all", "one less bell to answer ",or maybe there biggest might've been " up up and away ". Seems like they always had something playin on the radio.
"Up Up and Away" is another great song by The Fifth Dimension .. "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine" was used in the hippie Broadway musical ( and movie ), "Hair".
Yes, two beautiful women, they sang about love and optimism, today everyone is negative and singing about injustice, which approach brings a better outcome?
Some of the greatest vocals ever put to tape. Florence LaRue is as beautiful a woman as I've ever laid my eyes on. She handles the intro verse spectacularly. When she sings the word "peace" in the third line...I get shivers. Her voice is pitch perfect Heaven on Earth. I developed a serious crush on Florence (Shorty :-) as a 10-year-old boy in 1969. Still have it. She is still performing to this day. Thought you genuinely came around towards the end of your reaction. Offering sincere props to a truly remarkable Quintet. I enjoyed your reaction very much. RNB
Their sound was orchestral. Historically in music this performance is Library of Congress material. Marilyn ❤ displaying some elegantly graceful dance moves. Her husband Billy takes us out like a preacher filled with the Holy Spirit. They've been married 50+ years and devout Christians and I've always understood this song as a veiled appeal, not just to the New Age/Thought of the day, but to all humanity. Six weeks #1 Billboard 100.
Lmao,I was waiting for your reaction when you mentioned hippies and your face change was classic,i also thought they were white when i first heard the song but it wasn't to long before i actually see them perform it on tv and i was shocked also,i really do like it though as it reminds me when i was young and feel nostalgic hearing it even though i was born in Dec 1968 and this was released in 1969 but was always played on the radio and tv in my younger years, and yeah it's 1 song, the ultimate hippy song and an utter classic tune🏴👍
Yo Bro, who are you?!?! I love your hat so much,420 ALL day, love what you are saying. I grew up in the 60's in San Francisco. Haight/Ashbury was awesome. To this day I live the Bay Area. This music in the 60-70's IS the BEST era. Today's music is awful compared to this. Listen to the harmony, LET'S go, I am so glad to have been part of the music era. You feel it!!!!👽☮️❤️😋
So, I'm listening to your opening statement to this song, and I thinking, his mind is gonna be blown when he realizes this is a Black group!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!
Nobody cared back then. And yes the black race has some " carletons," but we can all keep at least a beat, however, the focus then was to just " feel the music" and let it flow through you in movement. That's it really. I'm not sure about this reaction. You got soooo confused. Maybe, " open up your heart and let the sunshine IN.!" Go live what you heard with everybody even if they can't dance. Sheesh. Gen x on board, our music, our legends, our experiences, join in. You will never ever be the same person you were before you did reactions. Every song will challenge you to challenge life.
Every days a school day ive only ever heard this song on radio or in a movie and thought it was sung by white hippies and also had no idea that was all one song. Hilarious reaction to it 😀 I was actually listening to Minnie Ripperton - Les Fleurs when this song came up there kind of similar
Lot's of great songs from that musical, and later it was made into a moive, almost every song is pure gold, and also, for the times, very thought provoking. Check out Black Boys, Three Five Zero, others.
Have seen 4 of ur reactions now. U hv a lot of random cultural references but they’re all jumbled n just a tad off base. Not to knock u at all! But it’s like if u had someone there with u who was older who could quickly correct u, you’d get it in a snap, I’m sure. As for the 5th Dimension, they did have other hits but were big on radio only for a season. This is a mashup of two songs from the Broadway musical Hair n arranged n backed by a producer n musicians from LA’s golden era of studio musicians, in this case, The Wrecking Crew. A year or two ago, Questlove unearthed n produced clips from the Harlem Renaissance Festival called SUMMER OF SOUL. the 5th Dimension are there.

5th dimension was huge back in the day.

The shorter, round guy was an accomplished opera singer.
The great Marilyn McCoo
"Up Up and Away" is another great song by The Fifth Dimension ..
"Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine" was used in the hippie Broadway musical ( and movie ), "Hair".
And, lets take a moment to appreciate that fucking bass line by the great Joe Osborn....
Amen!
Absolutely BRAVO!!!
Two beautiful black women
Yes, two beautiful women, they sang about love and optimism, today everyone is negative and singing about injustice, which approach brings a better outcome?
The 5th Dimension had a lot of great songs.
The Fifth Dimension sounds white and The Righteous Brothers sound black. Rock and Pop music has been extremely diverse, since the 1960's.
The Fifth Dimension so not sound white, they sound like themselves
Open your mind,dude
I was 13, and in 8th Grade, when this was new, and this was a big hit.

Yes, we had black singers all the way back in 1970!
Can’t believe you have a podcast. Stop hating the big dude
Having lived through it as an older teenager, I liken the 70’a to the teenage stage of all of humanity.
ONLY MOVIES WERE FILMED IN TECHNICOLOR NOT TELEVISION
