I saw the musical "HAIR" back in 1969. It was a controversial musical because the performers took their clothes off at the end of the first act.

This is a medley of two songs from the Broadway musical “Hair” which came out in 1967 (made into a film in 1979.) During the finale (Let the Sunshine In) sometimes the audience was invited to come up on stage to sing and dance along with the cast.

It's appropriate that this recording be featured in your New York stream: The 5th Dimension were in New York performing when singer Billy Davis left his wallet in a taxi cab. The next passenger in the cab happened to be a producer of the musical "Hair", that was all the rage at the time. Davis invited the producer to come to a 5th Dimension performance as a reward for returning his wallet (not knowing who the guy was), and the producer ended up inviting The 5D to his show: "Hair". When the members of the 5D heard the "Aquarius" song they were convinced it needed to be recorded right away. Their producer, Bones Howe, came up with the idea of combining two songs from the musical to make it something more impactful. Howe always worked with members of the 'Wrecking Crew' studio musicians to record his album projects. The 5th Dimension were fortunate in that they were able to work with the same rhythm section on all their recordings up to 1975 - drummer Hal Blaine and bassist Joe Osborn. And their buddy, Larry Knechtel, often played keyboards on the albums, so it gave The 5th Dimension a consistent, cohesive sound on all the early albums that most vocal groups did not benefit from. The albums have more of a true 'group' sound, than the usual vocal group with anonymous backing musicians.
I recommend you listen to "The Girls' Song", "Black Patch" , "If I Could Reach You", "This Is Your Life", "On The Beach (In The Summertime)" and "Dimension 5ive" to hear the range of their capabilities.

This was from the musical play “Hair” which debuted in 1968 in New York City. It was about the 60s, the hippies and the peace movement. This play was remade over and over again in different cities, and I saw it at the Strand theater in my hometown. Brings back a lot of memories to hear this iconic song by the 5th Dimension. The Age of Aquarius, in astrology, is either the current or forthcoming astrological age, depending on the method of calculation. Astrologers maintain that an astrological age is a product of the Earth's slow precessional rotation and lasts for 2,160 years, on average (one Great Year equals 25,920-year period of precession / 12 zodiac signs = 2,160 years)
Later Marylin Mcoo and Billy Davis Jr from this group had some hits on their own.

The joke goes, that a great singer could sing tbe phone book and make it sound good. The 5th Dimension literally sang the Declaration of independence and made it sound wonderful! Such music and harmonies. None better!!!!

In the documentary Summer of Soul, director Questlove interviews Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr, members of the 5th Dimension. It’s an interesting segment of this film. If you haven’t seen Summer of Soul, seek it out. You won’t regret it!!

I am having major flashbacks to chores on Saturday morning - the Fifth Dimension was one of the 8 tracks (yes I said 8 tracks) that we played doing chores then. For reference, others were the Oklahoma soundtrack, Barbra Streisand's greatest hits, and Simon and Garfunkle's greatest hits.

69 and I remember that my first exposure to the 5th Dimension...like a lot of other artists...was on the Ed Sullivan show.

These songs are from a simpler time when optimism ruled the day and people thought the future was going to be enlightened and mankind was going to be better than we are.

I remember Aquarius as a kid in south Texas. It is a meaningless mixture of hippy talk and astro-babble but that doesn't matter because it was beautifully done and a joy to listen to. The lyrics mean less now than they did then but the joyous music means even more.

Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. have been married now for over 50 years! Check out Wedding Bell Blues, One Less Bell to Answer, Surrey, and Up Up and Away. This group was amazing back in the day!

It's also cool that "Aquarius" was the name of Apollo 13s LEM and the ship that got the astronauts home.

I vividly remember this. I don't think peace guided the planets or love steered the stars in retrospect, but I was young and willing to believe at the time. We really need some of this naive acceptance & love these days.

They are actually two songs from the musical "Hair" combined. It was one of these songs that kind of defined the Hippy movement and closed out the decade of the 1960's and all it's turmoil and change. if you did not live in the era you will never fully know...Congrats on your degree.
