The Million-Mile Porsche 356

  • It takes a lot of driving, work, and a little bit of luck to achieve nearly a million miles in one car. Guy Newmark has been driving one car for forty-five years, a beautiful blue 356, and he has no thoughts of driving any other. After a million miles, Guy finds himself almost sad when he pulls the car into the garage, so he sometimes invents errands in order to keep on driving. With a car still as fun to drive as the day it rolled off the assembly line, this is easy to see why.

    I have owned some 356’s and currently own a 73 Porsche 911. This man gets it. He understands the feeling and I respect his philosophy. You buy a other sports cars to impress others. You buy a Porsche to drive and impress yourself.

      You know why so many sports cars are wrecked today? Because they are more powerful, and thus more difficult and dangerous to handle, than for example the Porsche 356, and they are bought by ignorant rich pricks who think they have the competence race them. It's so sad to see! :/

    • @JustSujC
      @JustSujC 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Petter Forsberg With the amount of drivers aids and improved chassis design included in a modern vehicle I don't find extra power to be a valid excuse to crash a sports car.

    One of the greatest Car Stories ever told! This is not just any car - but a real part of his family. If the car 'got sick' he cared! It wasn't just the early Porsches that made their owners feel this way, but also the millions of early VW Beetles and also the Kombis and Campervans. Life with these earlier VW's and Porsches was extremely 'special' to their owners, and is now almost a time gone by.... There will not be many (if any) true 'classics' of the modern cars produced from the same Historic VW Stable. Thanks go to Petrolicious for producing one of the best vids on YT. Greetings from Australia.

    I've experienced all those feelings of wanting to make up excuses to do more driving or go more places - and I did. I owned it while living in NYC and PHILA. I drove it as my main car - in sub zero degrees and summer - it always started and was a joy. Driving this car....it hits it stride at about 60 mph and then it takes off. As a designer I agree, with you, I loved looking at it at every angle. People in NYC thanked me for driving it, because most people with "classic cars" don't drive them except in perfect weather conditions.
    I could go on in my agreement. Thank you for posting this. I'm no longer driving anything as interesting...but have lived because I did.

    I love this guy, he understands cars, they are meant to be driven. Anyone who buys a rare classic car and mothballs it up as an investment truly devalues and demoralizes the car. If I had a rare 250 GTO Ferrari I would slam more miles on that thing than all other GTOs have combined. It's not an investment its a heritage.

    I was six years old when I saw a Porsche 911 in a bad 1980 German movie and I've had a crush. I've busted my ass and waited three decades until I've owned one. Swear God I've had numerous nightmares with me not being able to fit inside (I'm 192 cm in height) and when (finally!) I've opened the door to my 911/993 I was sweating like a pig at the slaughterhouse. Got inside and a choir of angels suddenly sang to me like it was Resurrection time. People often asked me why is my 911 my daily car? My answer is always the same: 4 seats? Great fuel consumption? Then it must be a bloody family car, right? My kids don't fit in anymore in my back seats? Fuck them! Squeeze in or hit the road with the mayor's car.

    I have an Infiniti i30 with just now 270,000 miles on it, running great in everyway. Being 19 I wanna keep driving it for as long as I can. I can definitely feel this guys connection with his car.

    Why does high miles equal lower value? The way I look at it, it would be a testament of how well the car runs if it has been driven many miles.
