I have 11 tolumnias right now, and I'm totally planning on getting more. You were the one that introduced them to me, somewhere last year. They've been a joy to grow. In the beginning I've been pretty intimidated by those remarks about their roots. When I got first batch they were all bare-rooted, but they adapted to my mix of bark and sphagnum in a blink of an eye. Even the one that came as single, rootless fan has been doing great (first one to bloom actually). I'm 100% supporting the agenda to get them popularized.

My favorite orchid! I've had them for years, and love them for all the same reasons. 😁 The only thing I would add -- I'm in the eastern U.S., and the only pest problem I've ever had with my tolumnia has been scale. Whenever I've put them outside for a summer, they get infested, and the equitant leaves make it VERY hard to eradicate the scale. I've defaulted to growing them exclusively indoors under lights as a result. As you said, though, they grow great under lights, and I have NO pest problems if I keep them inside.

I just ordered a Tolumnia! I have been looking into them, but this video solidified my decision! I got a jairak flying leopard. So excited. They're so beautiful!

It just arrived with an extra buddy! I'm not so sure about the roots, so I'm rewatching to see if you show what healthy vs dead roots look like. 🤞

Ever since the video you did with the Tolumnias on the Ikea board I’ve had them on my wishlist. So this spring I bought 3: a Peach, a Pomegranate and a Raspberry, such cool names 😁 I absolutely adore them, and I definitely want more 😍

Great video. I love tolumnias! Have several under growlights and they are spiking this Fall! My oldest (5 years) was set back for 3 years-just focused on roots and leaves. This Fall it’s blessed me with two spikes filled with gorgeous little flowers❤ Well worth the 3 year wait😊

I have 4 of them, had them for almost a year now. One bloomed last spring, "Spoty" and it has a spike again now. Another one "Red Spread" also has a spike now. I have them in moss in small clay pots under grow lights. They seem pretty happy so far. Definitely will buy more.

I have 11 of them. The first one I got almost two years ago. She a little set back because I destroyed a bunch of her roots… the other ten are babies that I’ve had for nine months. I can’t wait for them to bloom.

I bought a tolumnia at a Lowes who usually only handle Phalenopsis. It was on a sale shelf I believe because the people there may not have even known it was an orchid. I brought it home to see if I could keep it alive and it surprised me by thriving and blooming repeatedly. After a few years, I could tell that something was killing it but I did not discover fungus knats until it was too late. Now I have several tolumnias but they have not seemed as happy as my first. I hope they improve and begin to thrive. I am waiting to see them bloom.

I like the crystal swan amongst them. It reminds me of the little pot you had one Tolumnia in, in the video that made me buy 2 of my own in January. And now alongside this video, one of them is spiking! Hi from Italy 🇮🇹

I’ve been using the plant app Planta - Im tediously adding all of my plants to track their growth and keep on a good care schedule…I get to my tolumnias, and they don’t even have them in their database! I found all kinds of Oncidium and dendrobiums but no tolumnias. So I guess since they are a relative to Oncidium I gave up and put it in as so….Just goes to show that they aren’t very popular for some reason. I got mine in a surprise orchid bundle from Etsy, and I love them so much! I haven’t even seen any blooms yet (one of them has buds 🎉) but they seem super super easy so far, and they are growing great. They are also super cute without any flowers!

Really like all the reasons you listed. May give them a try in my outdoor garden. Thanks! I think they can do well as outdoor orchids if mounted with crown facing down so as to not catch water, they rot so easily otherwise.

Hi Danny, I currently have 4 in my collection, had 6 but lost 2 due to overwatering. The remaining ones are doing great. Growing pretty fast in my opinion, and I have had them for almost 2 years now. Just watching them grow and hoping for spikes. They are so darn cute!!

FYI -> The 1-Euro Tol. scandens which Schwerter sells sometimes have a wonderful fragrance, just couldn't believe it. Bought 3 just for testing, the smallest died quite quickly, 2 survived, 1 flowered this spring and I was very surprised. Its not a bushy plant but a climber. Have it still in bark, not mounted.

  • @jessh9988

Pretty and small, maybe I'll try them next. So far I've had experience with phals, 1 oncidium, dendrobium (phal type) and a cattleya, also a paphiopedilum and I am looking for smaller orchids now. My issue is I'm never successful with minis, I've never had a set back with a mini and had it recover, so I kind of avoid them.

I've discovered that sphagnum 1:1 or more ratio of sphagnum moss doesn't work for my environment (Istanbul) especially in the fall/winter. It stays wet for more than 2 weeks and I get root rot a lot. I was great in the summer though. Now I have to repot all my orchids.

To speed up new root growth use Dana-Gro's KLN (1tsp/ gal mixed in with your fertilizer). I've had orchids without any roots and after giving them KLN they had massive root systems in only six months. It is truly an orchid grower's best friend!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, sorry but honestly any healthy orchid should have a considerable big root system in 6 months (unless they aren't big root producers, like Macodes for example). If an orchid is seriously lacking energy and means of producing it (leaves, psb) no amount of miracle cures can make sap appear in the non existent structures, it needs resources to make structures and structures to gather resources, it's all connected. So things happen slooooow and tiny at first, no matter what. I'll be honest, I call placebo on most of these products when it comes to orchids, in my trials there was no difference with the boosters, or not enough to convince me. So I'll save up my cash for better things 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are moisture trays necessary to keep pests away? If I grow any dendrobiums inside, they get spider mites unless I have them on a bed of pebbles with water. I hate silver leaves (grrr). I love these and have always wanted some! Thanks!

Hi danny. How do i flush the orchid if it is potted in full spagnum moss? And people always say “do not repot your orchid during the cool/ cold seasons. What temperature to be considered as cool? 18C?22C?
I grow my orchid under grow lights and t5 tubes (on 12hrs everyday) and the temperature in the growing space it’s about 18C-26C. Does it mean that winter it’s not an issue? Thanks
