In this video, we’re counting down the top 10 facts about the Pekingese.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Companion Dogs
Height: 6 inches to 9 inches tall at the shoulder
    Weight: 7 to 14 pounds
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
It's no wonder the Pekingese has a self-important attitude, given his history as an imperial favorite. He was held in great esteem at the imperial court of China, and he still knows it today.
A Pekingese will greet you with dignity and pride. He understands his ancestors were the companions of royalty and he continues to demand the respect such a position entails today. With his soft round brown eyes, mane of long straight hair and tail carried jauntily over his back, he swaggers through life in full awareness of who he is and the importance he has to the people who live with him.
Pekingese are very intelligent, but that intelligence is offset by an independent mind and a wide stubborn streak. Training them is a challenge.
They consider themselves in charge of any situation so you must persuade them that you are in charge and that doing what you want is to their advantage. Pekingese do not respond well to harsh training or discipline and it can cause them to become defensive and possibly to bite.

My Pixy was 18 years old when she died. She had a flat face with respiratory problems. She was twice tubed in ICU and survived. I always said she has more than 9 lives. A day before Christmas day when I was visiting my parents in another state her babysistter phoned me to tell me that she found her outside and she is breathing funny. I thought it was a heatstroke and asked her to record her. I just knew that this will be the last. She had 4 strokes and died. My biggest wish for me was to be there for her but I was not able. This has been 3 months and I am still struggling. I wish I could have been there for her and just hold her and speak to her before she crossed the bridge. I feel guilty for not being there for her. We had a onnection which no one can ever understand.

I never thought I would ever own such a dog but sometimes life surprises you. Ever since I got her I'm in love with this breed.
I live in a house with several apartments and while she is indeed very vigilant, she would never bark or even lift her head when neighbors move around in the stairway. Even when the kids run and scream. She only reacts to strangers. Besides that she's an extremely silent dog.
    Their personality is strong.
They are indeed very stubborn and mine has little will to please. Sometimes it's hilarious how she looks at me when I keep her from doing what she wants. It's as if she would say "how dare you?". She doesn't like small children that much because she likes it quiet and calm. She usually ignores other dogs and only wants to be associated with dogs that respect her boundaries. Even our Shepherd doesn't dare to challenge her. Pekingese are the perfect dog to have around if you're not having an extremely active life. It's just a shame that they can't handle heat at all. I'm so in love with this breed not because of their looks but because of their personality and cute behavior (even though I must admit I got used to their faces).

Had one growing up. Sometimes my little cousins would stay with us. We taught the kids to leave him alone when he was done playing. However he would guard the kids when they slept. One of my Uncles who was visiting and wanted to pick up my infant cousin (His great niece) and Toby my late Pekingese actually bit him. He would only let Mom or myself near the baby. I like how the way British brought Pekingese to Europe was subtly avoided. They brought them after sacking and burning down imperial palace in Beijing as one of the last acts in second Opium war. And among riches they've found and maraudered in the Forbidden City were those dogs, which they stole. So yeah, that's 11th "fun" fact about those dogs.

They do not shed a lot. They shed twice a year when they change coat, in autumn and spring. Simple solution, trim short. They need a short coat in summer anyway. They get cold in autumn, so that means... cute little doggy- sweaters. Yey! They do not like children too much. My son still does not pick Suzzy up. "She bits!" and she does when annoyed. You will need to "train" the child to respect the dog's needs: no pushing, no pulling, no picking up (unless you are an adult they trust to not drop them), no standing too close to their face ( as this is a sign of aggression in doggy language).
All in all, they can be goofy, lovable, stubborn, picky eaters, good travel companions, can sleep all day waiting for you to get home or join you for a long walk (you will carry them on the way back, though). In summer, make sure you bring water as they can overheat even with short coats ( because they are so close to the ground). Barking is not a thing, and you can teach them to be quiet. With 2 pekes in our family, healthwise, nothing major. Mind the eyes. Due to their big bulging eyes, they can get into trouble. Eyes popping out is not uncommon. Cataracts and other eye conditions as well. This is why you see quite a few "Pirate Pekes." If you welcome one in your family, take care of them. They are a joy and will warm your heart every day.

Our first Pekingese cuddles live to be the ripe old age of 19 he was small loving and full of life. Our second Pekingese. Boo is a thug. He's twice the size of cuddles and he walks around more like an English bulldog than a Pekingese his favorite pastime is picking fights with the 4 Labradors behind us five times his size and he'll take all 4 of them on. The biggest problem we've had with both dogs is house training it was impossible to house-train either one. We have to stay on top of him 24/7 or he will leave a nasty little surprises on the new carpet. He's now 9 years old and a part of the family but next time I step in something in the middle of the night that could very well change.... P.S.: Owning a good carpet cleaner is a "MUST" if you have a Pekingese in the house.

So sorry for everybody on here for losing their dogs. It is the worst thing I can imagine. They come to mean so much. And they carry you through the worst times, knowing when to cuddle, when to give you kisses, and when to just be there close for you. Family is nice, but a pet is closer many times.

my one peke is very difficult to groom , picks up every leaf and gets matted.... so it depends. My other pekingese almost never gets knots and is easy to groom .Some have the type fur that is a lot of work and others require minimal care. They do shed a lot. I reward them tiny treats as I brush them which helps make it a positive time.

I have a Pekingese cross breed, she has a longer nose and a bit shorter fur but that's about it. She LOVES kids, guess she got that part from whatever breed her father was lol. I found out today that they were royal dogs and it explains A LOT about her behavior. Picky eater, complains a lot, all fine and fragile lil ass, yeah. I always called her Your majesty, guess it's just in her DNA :D
Oh and I found her on the street when she was I think two-three months old pup. Someone abandoned her because she's a, well, girl.

We’re praying that we get approved for the adoption of a rescue Pekingese at our humane society I’ve had one in the past and I truly love this type of breed he is a older dog 🐕 however we rather rescue a pet than pay a high price , breeding out here in North Dakota is sad the greedy price for a furry friend is truly sad!

I didn’t get the impression these are smart in general breed. I saw cute Pekingese dogs before that stuck their tongue out and wagged their tail furiously but they never struck me as intelligent they could be trained easily. Those I’ve met had cross eyes maybe bred by amateurs. Still they were cute by way of being so full of loving energy.

I have a Pekingese and his name is Ranveer and he is an angel but sometimes he is a little overprotective and does not like being touched by my family and growls and bites them actually and his very greedy and if I show too much attention to my brother's dog spotty then he bites spotty or puts his paw on me and i love him soo much his soo cute.

My one is neutered and he is prone to getting fat and I just portion his meals and I add veggies (not cooked in oil) green beans or pumpkin or squash . My other peke is super lean and he eats the same amount (he's not neutered). I try to walk them 15 - 20 minutes once every other day and play with them fetch etc.
