I have always loved Pekingese and absolutely love my girl. I keep her clipped back because where I live the summers are incredibly hot. She swims, walks happily 3 km. Is friends with cats and other dogs. She is also an excellent guard dog. I love my girl, and wouldn't want any other dog.

I wish they would have two categories of Pekingese - show Pekingese and pet Pekingese. Most people who have them do not have those giant powder puffs. In fact, originally the breed didn't have hair THAT long.
You are correct the Pekingese didn’t have this long coat back long ago they are in fact classified as a spaniel and the spaniel type haircut just isn’t as favored by breeders or dog shows now a days I actually like the shorter cut spaniel type haircut myself

"They are very athletic"?? It is a disgrace. The Pekingese is one of the 15 high profile breeds designated by the Kennel Club as requiring particular monitoring by reason of visible conditions which may cause health and welfare concerns.
Health and welfare problems due to their exaggerated conformation (Body shape and physical characteristics):
Brachycephalic ocular syndrome, due to the Pekingese’s extremely short head and consequential shape and position of the eyes.
Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) (also due to head shape)
Stenotic nares
Suffering in hot weather, due to the above and hair abundance.
Difficulty eating, due to mouth deformities.
Dystocia
Intertrigo (facial fold skin disease)
Hemivertebrae Caused by selection for curly tail.
Etc.
Educate yourselves, folks. Suffering is not a personality trait.
My dad has two and since dad's passing I have been their caretakers, the y are so happy and very sweet loving animals but they do suffer terribly from the heat in the summer and breathing issues, loud snoring while they sleep, panting loudly when they go for walks. When dad bred the female she had to have a c section since their large heads won't fit through the narrow canal, she had 3 but unfortunately the runt never made it ...I must say,
I am surprised that the Pekingese is allowed to continue to exist, considering.....
@blacina9036 it's been over 2000 years since that dog breed was created. If they've existed for that long why they stop being allowed now? Tons of dogs have health problems. But pekingese often live up to 18 years. They persevere despite their issues.
