Bred as a companion dog to the Cuban aristocracy in the 1800s, he’s earned the nickname “Velcro dog” because he sticks so closely to his owner’s side. But don’t write him off as just a lapdog; the Havanese is trainable and surprisingly energetic, and has excelled in dog sports and canine careers ranging from circus performer to assisting the handicapped.
The Havanese shines his affectionate personality on everyone, including strangers, children, other dogs, and even cats. But his family will get the lion's share of his love; given the choice, he'll stick like glue to his owner's side. The potential downside to all this devotion is that, when left alone, the Havanese can become anxious. This is definitely a housedog, and a Havanese who's left in the backyard - or anywhere away from his family - is not a happy dog.
His Velcro personality isn't so surprising, considering he was bred to keep the wealthy families of his native island of Cuba company. Since then, however, the Havanese has proven that he's good for much more than warming laps. Havanese dogs are quite trainable, and they've worked as therapy and assistance dogs, sniffed out mold and termites, and shown off their clownish antics as performing dogs.
They've also got a surprising amount of energy for their size, and for the family looking to compete, the Havanese will happily tackle such sports as agility, freestyle, obedience, and flyball.
As with many small dogs, it's common for adoring owners to overindulge their Havanese. They'll probably regret it - bad habits, such as eating only people's food, can form very quickly. This breed is a sharp con artist, and you may find that your Havanese is training you, rather than the other way around.

I found a very old one wandering through a neighborhood.. I tried to find its owner bc I did not even like him at first since he bit me the very first day so I spent the first 2 weeks trying to track down his mom. He was OBVIOUSLY well-loved up until he ventured off into the wild but he did not have a chip, no one called into the various police stations I kept in contact with and though I posted his pic and my info at online dog finders like fido finder and other local lost dog aids, no one came for him. The vet said he was probably about 13-14y old already (he had lost most of his teeth)... I called him "Schrimp" bc he was so small and I fell in love with him not long after it became apparent he was alone. We spent the next two years together, he was by my side every minute of every day and we became best friends. I knew our time was limited bc he was so old but I sure loved him he was one of the best cutest little dog ever..

I have a 17 year old havanese named Tinker! He is doing pretty good for his age. A couple of health problems related to age but has a strong determination! Still acts like a goofball and makes me laugh everyday! People are shocked when I tell them how old he is

Have havanese for almost 4 years! Her name is Bailey. Honestly the most loving dog I’ve ever had and have had a lot. I almost consider her like my best friend. Very blessed to have her in my life. Unconditional love at its finest
Lost my little buddy after 15 years in 2018. I still miss him so much. I called him my tumor because he was always stuck to some part of me, lol. I’ve had dogs all my life, big and small, many different breeds. He was my favorite, just special. We have a golden now, and he’s great, total goof, but I miss my cuddle buddy. I’ll get another one someday, I love everything about the breed. Amazing companions.

My 4 years old Havanese is perfect. Coco, she was a gift from my cousin and she has been a Godsend. She was right by my side when my little 10 1/2 year Zaki a 2 lb Chorkie passed away(we were inseparable💔). If not for Coco It would have been so much harder. She made the heartache tolerable. I Love her so much. She knows it❤ 😁

My havenese (his name is Zenji) is 11 weeks now. He can already do „sit“ and „down“. Now he starts to learn „stay“. He so smart and cute! He follows us wherever we go.

Our Lucy (named after I Love Lucy tv show) is the light of our lives. She is the first small dog in hour house, previous dogs were Great Pyrenees & Newfoundland which were great dogs but our little Havanese is special. Could be just the size is perfect, we can take her anywhere, she is affectionate - always happy to see you and just a cuddler. Most of this video is spot on, I can’t see ourselves without one of these little dogs!

The mother, father and 2 of their babies. Amazing little Angels. Playfully and really want to please their hu-mum .

I was very lonely before I got my first Male, Kognac. I flew to Germany to fetch him.
He travels everywhere with me. We go to Italy regularly and he and his wife come with us. I can not take their babies because we can only take two dogs (one each) in the cabin with us.
My babies have enriched my life no end.
Nothing better than waking up to see four black noses on my mattress waiting for me to wake up - then much happiness (mum is awake!)

The BEST dog ever!!! Our Havanese has his own standard poodle (Havanese 11 pounds; poodle 52 pounds). They plan constantly and really love each other. The poodle was smaller than than the Havanese when we got her so the Havanese is truly her pack leader. They are adorable together.
Best dog breed ever, I bought a dog from craigslist and it was listed as a Teacup Maltese and got her for $450 an was wondering why a teacup is priced so low and it grew up to 14 pounds and we knew she wasn’t a what it was listed and she has silky double coat and big paws and I researched online and found out she is a Havanese! Her personality is out of this world she just wants to please you and she loves people and very easy to train, when we drove from LA to Northern Cali she would cry and we out the pee pad under her and she would go pee or poop and go back to bed! So smart!!! I highly recommend this breed for anyone that has depression because my day is brighter each day because of her!! Velcro Dog 100%

I have a now 4 year old pure bred Havanese and he is 25 lbs. He is not fat, just long and tall. I picked him because he was the biggest in the litter, by far. The best dog ever.
My Havanese is exactly that. She follows me from room to room, including the bathroom. She likes to go everywhere with me. She is a service dog. She alerts me of low blood sugar, diabetes. She’s the sweetest, smartest, cutest and funniest dog ever. She is a clown. After she eats, her fun personality comes out. The Havanese is really in tune with my emotions. Very endearing little dog. The best ever. She is little and feminine but the little tomboy comes out when she plays, she loves to run!!

Daisy is also a true service animal because I was in the Twin Towers on 9/11. I have a doctors letter and then I registered with a site online. She has a card so that if anyone questions me at a restaurant, store I can pull out the card and they can call. She has a diploma and also a service vest. I hired a professional trainer.
Beauty by Benson Hi There, I went to my vet as well as my doctor. They both had seen and were aware of what my dog was doing to help me and suggested her becoming a service dog. They both wrote me letters and I took the letters with my dog to the animal service in my county. They have you fill out paperwork and have another vet look into your info and get back to you and either accept or decline your pet as a service animal. They will give you a certain tag to prove your dog is a service dog along with paperwork. Carry it with you at all times. I still get harassed by some people claiming I bought the tag and refusing me entrance somewhere with her, but I always win, with my info. Best wishes with your doggie, they are the best!!!
I took care of one for a while. It's true they're very affectionate. I would sneak into a different room while he was sleeping on the floor. And sure enough when I looked over my shoulder, there he was lying on his stomach on the floor, head towards me, just observing me wherever I was.
But going for walks was a nightmare: he'd stop every ten meters because he just HAD to sniff something and wouldn't stop until he was done.
My 3 year old little Girl makes me laugh everyday. She’s a huge people person but she’s also a mommas girl.
She travels well and enjoys meeting other animals horses, cows, cats... she’s definitely a love.
My little Havanese is 3 now, I got him at 16weeks❣️He has my heart completely…… he’s a flirt, a rascal, a best friend, an entertainer, I could go on & on. He’s extremely intelligent & very perceptive. He’s a wonderful smuggler & an absolutely hilarious, playful little clown. He was a little difficult to potty train but one day it just clicked & he’s perfect now. He’s very vocal, not much of a barker but loves to talk to us. Because he’s vocal he literally stands, stares us down & asks to go potty. He’s particularly beautiful as his parents are black & white but his grandparents were brown, consequently he’s primarily white & silver with some dark cream hair & his eyes are green, rimmed in brown & his adorable nose is brown like a chocolate kiss. His little lips are light pink & he smiles a lot. He’s very solid & strong & loves to play. He often makes up his own games & puts on a show for us. He’s quite independent & literally has no bad traits or bad habits. He’s ALWAYS happy & affectionate but never needy, anxious or demanding. Clearly I would recommend a Havanese to anyone❤️❤️❤️

I adopted a Havanese from a puppy mill when she was 6.5 years old. She is now 16. I often times wish I had her from a pup so I could have given the love and attention she is worthy of. She had many issues when I first got her. One was trust. I don’t think she was socialized which made her very timid. With time she has come around to accepting new people but is cautious for anyone reaching out to touch her. She definitely is a Velcro dog and knows that I rescued her. She follows me around wherever I go. She is in her Very golden years now and sleeps about 19 hours a day. She gets up to eat and runs around the house a little but then walks aimlessly from room to room until I put her on her favorite chair and she naps. She is such a precious good natured dog and I’ve never heard her ever growl. She will bark at strangers but it is not annoying. I am so happy to have adopted my little Lulu. She has brought me comfort and joy in these ten years and I hope I made her last years good. My wish for her now is that she is able to leave this earth peacefully. She shows signs of dementia and when she looks confused I’ll pick her up and snuggle her until she recognizes my touch and smell. There is nothing like the trust and bonding that she has for me
My sailor is 6 years old now. He is the smartest, sweetest, little personality of a dog that I have ever had. He brings so much joy and love to us. He’s so funny with his little antics and keeps me laughing all the time. He gives kisses, and has a large vocabulary of words on command. Adorable is but one word that describes this breed. ❤️

I was blessed with my little guy for 18yrs 4mo. He went to be with the Angel's in June 2022. His name was Raisin. Still miss him so much. He went everywhere with me.
I got my havenese puppy in December when he was a few weeks old, he was like my late Christmas present.

I bought my Havanese by mistake. I was really looking for a shih tzu back then but the seller mistook the breed as shih tzu yet it was havanese. He's now 2 years old. Almost 2 years of living with clingyness and love from this dog.
Nanu Nanu turns 1 year this month. He’s been joy from the day we brought him home. He has a terrific sense of humor and is so smart. Nanu is very playful and loves water sports. He’s so all purpose that it’s hard for me to pick a favorite trait. He really does need to be kept busy so if you don’t pay him the attention that he thinks he deserves he will get in trouble (he’s chewed up three expensive pairs of glasses.). But if I had to choose one trait that we appreciate the most is he is the most affectionate dog we’ve ever known. He’s a little hairy treasure!.

I rescued my pup thinking he was a mix of some sort, but it turns out he is a corded havanese and true to every one of these traits! When people come to our house, he runs outside and runs circles around them as though he is corralling them to come inside!

My Havanese is now a year old. The most outstanding feature is his personality. I’ve never owned a dog that is always cheerful so playful and eager to please. Grooming is a nightmare if you don’t comb and brush daily. The hair is super soft and likes to mat.

I have a Havanese girl that is my shadow, no matter where I go she goes. She is the most affectionate of my 4 dogs (2 Shih Tzus girls and 1 Jack Russell boy) and she is very playful even with my cat! She is extremely jealous and wants all the attention no matter what. She is very special!
We got our Havanese because my husband is very allergic to dogs. He does great with our dog - Olly. An incredible dog! So happy, playful and has learned many tricks.

I had a siky for 20 years loved him so much, then a yorkie poo for 13, poodle for 19byears. They gave me so much love, but my little Bennie Havana's he is so very loveable. He gave my husband and I so much joy. It's like having little ones in the house again. We take him everywhere.

Helping with Dog sitting my sister’s dogs was heaven! They love the family and one of them was akin to strangers. Some Havanese are especially guard dogs 🐶 and will not like anyone who is not a member of the family. Most Havanese like playing catch past puppyhood. My plans are to getting a friendly Havanese who is also a guard dog. Thanks Irene for introducing two of them each different personalities.

Found ours at a puppy store that was basically an outlet for a mill....bastards......anyway....he was 4 months old, no one picked him and he was just cute as can be playing in their shredded newspaper....long story short....the BEST dog I have ever seen or had in over 60 years.....Riley is 10 now, losing some front small teeth but still really active and playful....is now about 19 lbs while weighing right at 15 his whole life...gets groomed about every 6 weeks.....unbelievable how intelligent this dog is....we will probably get another soon. One thing we have learned....he is much better with a friend....we’ve also had 2 Westies that he has had companionship with and 2 cats also over the years.
I have a 4 year old Havanese! He’s creamy white with a pinkish nose and light brown eyes. I got him when I lived hours away from my family and friends. He’s very sweet and playful and obedient. such a good dog. I might want another soon.
I have a male pup that is a mix Javanese, King Charles and a mini Schnauzer 😂OMGoodness what an energy ball and a truly extrovert personality. I’ve had 4 in my lifetime they truly are awsome dogs .biggest hearted and very smart but need to b with you andthey become very attached to you .
my dog was suggested to be part havanese by vet's when we first rescued him, and going through a list of havanese mixes I found he most closely resembled the havanese - soft-coated wheaten terrier combo. Watched your video on wheatens and I gotta say it sounds like I nailed it, personality-wise he has the traits of both. Very agile and quick-learning, he's picked up tricks that I never even tried to teach him just by observing tricks that my other dog did. Very sensitive to tone of voice, does not listen to commands sometimes when i'm stressed out, but when i'm calm he's very obedient and understands some pretty complex commands like 'let's go potty out front', and he goes right to the front door, if i try to change it and let him in the backyard he will not comply. Or 'let's go sleep in my bed' and he runs out from under my parents bed to my bedroom door. Like typical wheatens he's definitely a hearth-dog, loves curling up by a fire, or even watching TV, especially when animals are on the screen. yet, he's very allergy prone like a havanese, but has inordinately high exercise need for such a small dog, which seems to be the wheaten side. Also like a wheaten, his coat started out much darker when we first got him. Maybe a bit of lhasa apso or shih-tzu too, i'm going to watch those vids next. Love your channel, helps me feel much more confident in my guesses of what breeds he has in him because i'm not going just by looks but by behavior which seems more distinctive.
We got a female 6 mos ago, then a male 2 mos ago. We LOVE both and they get along great. We got them for our retirement companions and so happy we did. Scary smart. Mimosa the girl, Primo the boy.

I came visiting My brother in Romania and he has one Havanese, i fell in love with him. He was found on the streets ( unfortunately a big Problem in Romania ) and My little nephew just brought him home. He s so loving and caring and doesnt even bark. The size it’s just perfect not too small and Not too big and he s so fluffy. A perfect family dog I‘d say.

I live in the city 2 of the little guys. I walk them frequently some times put them in 10'x10' kennel so they can be outside off leash. The kennel is 6' high and needs to be the little performers can jump 4' straight up! No 40" high kennels they can clear them like a olympic hurdler. What a joy to be around!
They DO NEED EXERCISES , but apparently not too much especially if you have plenty room to run around indoors

Our Havanese is a sweety. I am so happy with him. He likes to play and he also likes to chew so he needs cheaper toys so he can chew hem up. He does not chew shoes tho. Thankfully. We are so pleased to have him. ❤

We just got our first Havanese puppy about 8 months ago. He is absolutely wonderful. I would recommend this breed for everyone. I have five grandchildren whom I watch. Every other week some of them are at their dad’s house. Those times are very difficult for him and he leaves no question as to his love for them when they return! We love this puppy very much!

My 6 month old Havanese is energetic but not too much. He loves to cuddle and follows us from room to room. They love to lick you constantly. At first he got a little anxious when we left the house but he got over it quickly and has adapted to our lifestyle.
Lola is 10 years old, and is alone all day while I'm at work. She's very comfortable with our routine, and has never been destructive, and is not crated. She does have 2 cats that she's best friends with, so she's not totally alone. She's very active, and we go for hour long walks most days, and she has a big yard to romp in. She's a happy, jolly little girl who has never met a stranger. I would reccomend the breed for just about everyone. Buy from a reputable breeder, as always.
Dogs Wiz...we have a 4 year old Hav and her name is Nena. She is our Velcro dog and does follow us around from room to room. I don't think she's too anxious when we are gone. She jumps up on the couch and appears to not like that we leave, but when we return she's just fine. They don't understand time like we do. If we go out into the garage and come back in even after just 5 minutes, she greets like we'd been gone for 2 hours. She is very energetic and delights us with her antics. She does let us know when someone is at the door, but when we answer she treats them (after sniffing at them a little) in a very friendly fashion. We love our Nena to pieces and couldn't be more happy with our choice.
Ours will periodically wander through the house and see where everyone is. Loves to go for car rides and does a small jump when being lifted into the car.
We have our third Havanese pup because after being 6 months without a Havanese we knew we would never be happy without one!
I have 2 , one is 17 and 1 is 15. The joys of our life. The very best.

I have a shavanese pup. I was told it was havanese and when he started to grow i did not see any curly hair and thought he was some kind of halfbreed. I didn't know about the short hair variation, which i love!

My little Vito was hit by a car the other night, i had him for 4 years, i adopted him from the local shelter. I remember when they first took him out of the cage he peed right there as soon as they put him down and then stood next to me and stuck like to me like velcro ever since, responded to the name i gave him right away, was already well trained and i trained him to do a standing spin for a treat in just an hour. He was my emotional support, trying hard not to think about him limp and lifeless I tried to give him CPR, the clinic couldn't help, it was traumatizing and triggered the trauma i have of losing my sister just a year ago and many of my friends before her.
I'm in tears so so sorry. Please know the shelters are full of those who need love and life...my angel from God, Tico (now at least 16) I got from a kill shelter after the one I'd had for 5 years was hit by a car. I cannot stress how the shelter, and stray, dogs I have now have made my life liveable. Please adopt.
I have a white havanese named casper! He is always happy and loves everyone. I think this is the best breed for people that like to snuggle with their dogs!

My 11 year old havi is a therapy dog! Loves to cuddle with people and is the smartest, most well mannered dog I’ve ever had.
I WILL say: mine was extremely hard to house train, and if you’re gone more than a few hours, he’s going inside sadly.

I love my havanese. The best dogs ever. Love how they are hypoallergenic too. No one warns you about those puppy years though, I’ve never had a puppy with so much energy lol such angels tho
I love my Havanese! He's super goofy and playful! He definitely follows me everywhere and is stubborn at times. He reminds me of a hunting dog because of his constant sniffing around, especially outdoors. He doesn't bark much at all, only when he wants my attention or to let the critters outside know it's HIS yard, but only when he initially runs out back to go potty. He is a true lapdog, who loves to cuddle. He's intelligent, sweet, sensitive and gentle and learns words, commands and tricks very well. Perfect for children too! Great family dog! I think this breed must definitely does best with having someone around most, if not all of the time.
Does they want to playreally much??? Like with toys and catch a stick and give it back.
